Post with 24 views. Draw-a-Box Homework #1

Here is my submission for the Lesson 1 homework. I did a second pass at the rotated boxes exercise because my first attempt at it didn't fill enough of the page.

Great job on finishing L1! few things I want to note on your exercises -

- notes before we get into individual exercises - my key concern throughout the lesson is that you are going over your lines several times each to try and correct mistakes - keep in mind we want to do one stroke only, and only ever add one more stroke to reinforce contours in the box challenge, or to reinforce overlaps in the rest of our lessons up from L1

- as for individual exercises

**-** You have nice, confident and smooth lines in your superimposed lines, however we want to stay vigilant against fraying at the start of our lines, which will cause us to fray unnecessarily at the end of our lines, reducing our line quality - instead, focus on starting on (to the best of your ability) the exact same point for each line you put down

**-** good job on ghosted lines

**-** for your table of ellipses, you had some nice, evenly shaped ellipses, however I can also see some where you didn't ghost enough and carry that same confidence through, leading to wobbly, stiff shaped ellipses - keep in mind you should be ghosting as much as you need until you feel ready to do 2-3 passes on your ellipses, and to focus on smooth, evenly shaped ellipses which *aim* to hit within the bounds and each-other, but don't compromise on their smooth, evenly shaped qualities for that accuracy

**-** good job in your ghosted planes, you have nice confident lines

**-** ellipses in planes - these have the same concern as the tables, however showing some improvement in their confidence, so good job

**-** for funnels, my main concern is that it feels quite rushed. remember these are exercises, and you should be going into them patiently, taking your time, and ghosting as much as you feel you need to. You did well to maintain the vast majority of your ellipses to their minor axis, so good job, however make sure to take your time in the planning phase

**-** for plotted perspective, and for your boxes in the box challenge, don't go back over your hatched lines, we only want to go over those once - if we go back over all our lines this many times it can easily hide mistakes, and this can reduce the quality of the critiques you receive - keep in mind for page formatting, that you should be separating your page into 3 boxes with small gaps between and on the edges of the paper, and this should be done in portrait view, the same rotation as your last organic perspective but separated into 3 rather than two.

**-** good job on rough perspective, same deal with page formatting as ^

**-** for rotated boxes, i'm again concerned with it being rushed, so remember to take your time. additionally, your boxes need narrow, consistently-sized gaps between each one of them, and to make sure that with each box outwards from the center, they rotate just a little bit more, having that horizontal set of lines come inwards towards each-other more-so in each box from the center out - you also need to draw through the boxes on every single box

**-** this is a good start, however note you should be filling out your frames more, you also did well to make sure your boxes were converging towards the same vanishing points, and while you did have some divergence, these are good quality for where you are.

Next Steps:

Due to the rushed nature of the funnels and their wobbliness, could you please provide 1 page of ellipses, half filled with boxes of ellipses, and half filled with funnels, where you are focused on taking your time in the planning and ghosting stage until you feel comfortable with your ellipses, showing you are clearly focused on smooth, evenly shaped ellipses (rather than wobbly) and prioritizing this over perfectly hitting the bounds within which you place them

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
