hello, I'll be critiquing your lesson 2 work

    Organic Arrows

Starting with your organic arrows, I notice a good amount of confidence in your linework. However, I do not see much lineweight being added to areas that overlap. This would be something to practice along with warm-ups.

I do also want to mention something about your arrow shapes and foreshortening. It seems to me that you are not quite grasping the arrows compressing as they go further away in perspective, causing your arrows to lack much depth. Here is an example of what it should look more like: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/011d064f.jpg . Also try experimenting more with the orientation of the arrows

--It may be helpful to also look back at the lesson if you need more help

    Organic Forms with Contours

I feel that your sausage forms are turning out nice and confident. It also seems that you avoided much pinching or inconsistency throughout the length of your forms.

For the ellipses in the forms, you did a decent job at changing the degree of the ellipses as they move in space. The contour curves are turning out well too. I like to see that you are hooking the curves around the shape and keeping them fit snug inside of the sausage.

    Textures

On the texture analysis, I can see that your work is turning out great. You did well with using the ink boldy and paying attention to the transistion between the zones with high density of detail to the areas that are more sparse.

-you also did a good job of drawing the shapes of the shadows and then filling them in, rather than simple, thin lines.

Looking at your texture dissections, I see that you applied the same bold shadows and transistions like in your analysis. Good job at breaking the silhouette as well.

    Form Intersections

Form intersection are a new concept and rather hard so don't worry if you completely understand the concept just yet. It will make more sense as you will practice these concepts more in later lessons. Other than that, I think that your linework is turning out nicely here.

    Organic Intersections

Lastly, your organic intersections are turning out great and are becoming solid. I also see that most of your shapes are staying consistent in size, which is what you should aim towards. For the cast shadows, they are bold and seem to be wrapping around the forms nicely. However, I would like to see more lineweight on the areas that overlap or seem to be infront of the other shapes.

Alrighty, I think it would be helpful for you to get a some more practice in with your organic arrows. I will assign this for you below.

    Next Steps:

    • 1 page of organic arrows

(using the tips above or looking back to the lessons if more understanding is needed)

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello, I will be critiquing your lesson 2 work

    Organic Arrows

The first thing I noticed with your arrows is the confident and smooth linework. This also includes the lineweight which you properly applied to the areas that overlap. I will also say that you did well with decreasing the negative space between the ziggzagging sections as they move away in perspective. Overall, you did pretty well.

    Organic Forms with Contours

Moving onto the sausage forms, you did very good of keeping a consistent width throughout the length. It is also good to see that you avoided any pinching or swelling that would undermine the solidity of your shapes

For the contour curves that wrap around the forms, you kept them snugly in place and I can see that you are aware of how they change degree -- Contour ellipses are similar to the contour curves and are kept snugly in place. I also see that you kept them aligned with the axis, but there are very minor degree shifts. Try to push the degree changes further as best as you can.

    Textures

Your texture analysis is turning out nicely here. I like to see the bold use of ink to fill in the cast shadows and details. You also did well of outlining the shapes of the shadows and filling them in, rather than drawing simple lines.

For the dissections I notice a few of the textures have simple lines for the cast shadows. Similar to what I said above, you should draw the shape of the shadows and then fill them in. Here is an example https://imgur.com/oAx2pRD

    Form Intersections

Form intersections are pretty difficult, so it's fine not to completely grasp the concept just yet. I see that you also repeated your lines in some of the boxes. It's best to draw a single line confidently rather than focusing on getting it completely accurate. This will definitely improve with practice.

-Lineweight should be added only once over the original line where the intersections are at, no more than that.

    Organic Intersections

Your sausage forms are pretty solid, but there are some issues with them. The lineweight should only be added on the parts that are overlapping and should be less bold as you only need one extra superimposed line over the area. The lineweight that goes around the entire sausage takes away some of the solidity.

Another thing that flattens out the drawing a bit is the cast shadows you added on the sausages. They need to wrap around more on the form that they are casting a shadow on like this: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/516f8d4f.jpg

Alrighty, as long as you practice these and take looks back at the lessons, I feel you are good to move on.

Hey there, I will be critiquing your lesson 2 work

    Organic Arrows

-The linework on your organic arrows is turning out nice and confident. I also notice your arrows have perspective in them, which is great. I would like to mention something about the lineweight, however. I see that you used lineweight on particulary longer sections of the arrows when it should be more focused on overlapping areas. You can also work on decreasing the negative space between the ziggzagging sections as the arrow moves further away from the veiwer.

I might also suggest that you experiment with different lengths or widths for your arrows a bit more. You can of course do this with your warm-ups

    Organic Forms with Contours

-You've done well with keeping your sausage forms a consistent width. It's good to see no pinching or swelling throughout their length. I also see that you are aware of the degree shifts, but it isn't necessary to add a lot of contours to the drawing. You can still convey the forms by adding less. Otherwise, these look great.

I also noticed the same things with your ellipses. You drew a few to many ellipses and that can easily flatten the drawing.

    Textures

-Your work on the texture analysis has turned out nicely. You did well with filling the cast shadows in boldy with ink and you achieved a nice transition from the high density details to the sparse areas. Great work on this

I see in your dissections that you improved on the degree shifts with the ellipses. For the details, you did well with adding in bold lines and shapes to fill in the textures. You also followed the form of the sausage well, along with breaking the sillhoette for shape.

    Form Intersections & Organic Intersections

It seems like you are grasping this concept and your forms feel very solid and confident. Linework looks great here.

For the organic intersections, your cast shadows and forms look very improved. It might be better to lessen the amount of sausages you draw and to make them more consistent shapes and sizes, otherwise, this work is good.

Also, there is no need to worry about remaking organic arrows and forms. The difference between the earlier work and the later work shows me that you are improving. Keep it up

Hello, I will be critiquing your lesson 1 work

    Lines

-Starting off with superimposed lines you kept them very smooth and confident. You also did well with keeping the wavering to one side which will likely disappear as you get more practice.

-Ghosted lines are starting off nice as well and you kept a consistent trajectory with them even if they missed the end point. The ghosted planes are similar to these and you also committed to your lines nicely here.

    Ellipses

-Tables of ellipses are looking tidy and confident rather than rushed. It's also great to see that you kept them well rounded and symmetrical which should always be the goal.

-Moving on to ellipses in planes, I can see that these are a bit uneven. You might be thinking that you have to modify the ellipse to touch all contact points of the plane, but instead you should only change the width and what position the ellipse is in. Otherwise, the linwork looks very confident here.

-Funnels are looking better and it seems that you kept the shapes consistent and snug inside of the boundaries. Some of the ellipses are a bit misaligned, but I believe you won't troubles with this as long as you practice

    Boxes

-Rough perspective is turning out nice, but I do see that the estimations for the vanishing points are a bit off. This should defintely improve with practice.

-The rotated boxes are looking great, however I recommend that you give yourself more space to draw and ghost the marks so it is easier to place and think about the roation of the boxes

-In the organic perspective you gave a good attempt at the perspective of the boxes, but there is still some room for improvement. Aything in this box section that may have issues with will be mentioned in the 250 Box Challenge.

I will mark your lesson as complete and you can move on :)

Hey there, I will be critiquing your lesson 1

    Lines

-Starting off with your superimposed lines I can see that you kept them nice and confident. You also did well with keeping the wavering all to one side which will likely disappear with further practice.

-Ghosted lines are turning out confident as well and you did a good job at giving them a consistent trajectory. The ghosted planes are similar to this and I see that you are committing to your linework here as well.

    Ellipses

-Your table of ellipses are looking very confident and it is nice to see that you kept them well rounded and symmetrical which should always be the aim when marking them down. These also look nice and tidy rather than rushed.

-The ellipses in planes will follow the same rules as I said above. I would also like to mention that an ellipse will always be symmetrical and you can only change the width and what position the ellipse is in. I'm sure you won't have any trouble with this since your ellipses are turning out quite well.

---Here is an example of what I was explaining : https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/dc19ce85.jpg

-Your funnels are turning out nicely as well, but I do notice some of them are misaligned which should improve with more practice.

    Boxes

-Rough perspective is looking great, but I do want to call a few things out. First, I see that some of your lines look repeated and anytime you repeat the line it will only make the mistake more obvious. The second thing I want to point out is that the estimations for the vanishing points are off, but these things will defintely all improve.

-The rotated boxes are turning out nice here, but I would recommend giving yourself some more room to draw so it is easier to ghost your marks and consider the rotation of the boxes.

-Finishing with the organic perspective, you gave a good attempt at the perspective of the boxes, but there are still some issues. I also notice that you used a little bit too much of lineweight and you should instead try and limit it by only doing one more ghosted mark over the original. You should also only add lineweight to the areas that overlap, but this will also be mentioned in later lessons so it isn't much of a problem to worry about in the mean time.

*Any issues I did or didn't mention in this section will be addressed in the 250 Box Challenge

I will go ahead and mark your lesson as complete and you can move on :) Good job

Hello, I'll be critiquing your lesson 1 work

    Lines

-Starting with superimposed lines, you did a nice job and kept the linework confident and smooth. There is expected fraying at one end, but you did well at keeping it to one side. This will defintely improve will more practice.

-Ghosted lines are off to a great start as well and I see that you gave them a clear and consistent trajectory. Some of these lines do look like they were repeated which can make mistakes more clear. Confidence matters more than accuracy, but I'm sure you won't have any issues with this in the future. Overall, these turned out nicely.

-The ghosted planes excercise is similar to the lines and I do see that you are committing to your marks without repeating. These are turning out great as well.

    Ellipses

-Table of ellipses is turning out nicely and I notice that you kept symmetry and roundness to your ellipses, which is what you should always aim for. Some of your ellipses do seem to be drawn through more than 2-3 times; it is preferable that you draw through only 2 times. Otherwise, these ellipses are turning out very confident.

-Ellipses in planes follow the same rules that I mentioned above. Another thing I want to mention is the shape of the ellipses. They should always be well rounded and symmetrical at each end even if they don't touch all of the contact points. It isn't necessary to modify the shape to touch the boundaries since you can only change the width and what position the ellipse is in. Here is an example: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/dc19ce85.jpg

-Your funnels excercise is looking confident, but there are some issues with the alignment and shape of them. I'm sure with further practice these will get better.

    Boxes

-Rough perspective has some confident line work, but just remember not to repeat any lines as to avoid making mistakes more obvious. The estimates for the vanishing points are a bit off, but this is nothing to worry about as long as you practice more.

-The rotated boxes are turning out well and you gave a good attempt at the rotation of them. I recommend giving yourself some more room in between boxes so it's easier to ghost and mark your lines.

-Finishing up with the organic perspective, I notice that you attempted the perspective of the boxes, but there are still some issues. Any problems related to these box excercises will be addressed in the 250 Box Challenge.

I will go ahead and mark your lesson as complete and you can move one :)

Hello, I'll be critiquing your lesson 1 work

    Lines

-Staring with superimposed lines, I can see some of the marks look confident, but some look a bit wobbly. It's always good to prioritze confident and smooth lines rather than accurate ones. I believe that you won't have any trouble on this with some more practice.

-Your ghosted lines are looking great and I can see you did them with more confidence. One thing I would like to point out is some of them tend to arch a bit so make sure to always continue your line in one consistent trajectory even if it misses the end point. Overall, these look well done.

-The ghosted planes excercise is follows similar rules to what I said above, and I can see that you committed to these lines better.

    Ellipses

-The table of ellipses is looking nice and tidy rather than rushed, but I do see some of them turning out a little uneven. You should always aim to make symmetrical shapes with well rounded ends.

-Moving on to ellipses in planes, I can see that these are a bit uneven as well. You might be thinking that you have to modify the ellipse to touch all contact points of the plane, but instead you should only change the width and what position the ellipse is in. Here is an example of what I mean: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/dc19ce85.jpg

-Your funnels are turning out nicely and seem to be more symmetrical. One thing here is that you are missing a bit of the alignment on the axis, but with further practice I'm sure you won't have trouble with this.

    Boxes

-Yoru rough perspective is turning out well and I do see that the vanishing point estimations are a bit off, but this will improve with practice.

-Rotated boxes are turning out nicely and you also gave a good attempt at the rotation

-Anything related to this box section or anything I didn't mention here will be addressed later in the 250 Box Challenge

Hello, I'll be critiquing your lesson 2 work

    Organic Arrows

-Starting off with organic arrows, your linework looks very confident and you did well with capturing the flow of the arrows. You also did nicely with compressing the arrows as they moved further away in perspective, but I would like to mention one thing with the lineweight. You added lineweight to particularly long marks which caused you to lose a bit of control with the line. It would be better to try and limit lineweight only to parts that are overlapping. Otherwise, these look very well.

    Organic forms with Contours

-Your organic forms are turning out well here, but I would like to mention a few things. First off, the forms look a bit uneven and they should be rather rounded at each end and a consistent width throughout.

Another thing that I noticed is the degree shifts in the ellipses and contour lines. You did well with wrapping and keeping the shapes inside of the circle, however they should change in degree a little bit more. Sometimes adding a little bit less of contour lines/ellipses and making sure you think about how the marks will convey your forms will help improvement.

    Textures

-Moving on to texture analysis, your work is looking great and you did well with making bold marks to convey the textures. Another great thing here is the transitions from bold to sparse.

-Same thing with the dissections, your work is turning out nicely and you have dynamic results with the textures. Your sausage forms do seem to have more improvement and solidity as well.

    Form intersections

-Your form intersections are turning out great and I also see that you have limited the lineweight only to certain overlapping areas. You are also doing well with the intersections, but don't worry if you don't fully grasp the concept just yet. Anything here will be mentioned in later lessons.

    Organic intersections

-Finishing up with the organic inetrsections, your forms are looking more rounded and they seem to be wrapping around believably along with your good usage of cast shadows. One last thing I would mention here is to make your shapes a bit more equally sized.

Alrighty, I believe I covered everything here and I will go ahead and mark your lesson as complete :)

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

This is a remarkable little pen. Technically speaking, any brush pen of reasonable quality will do, but I'm especially fond of this one. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.

Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.
