Hey this is a slow reply but thank you for the comments Bababooey! I'll work on exaggerating the ellipses and getting the shadows right now!

You did wonderfully at achieving convergence of the boxes. You developed one bad habit over the course of the challenge though which is to put all of the vanishing points extremely close to boxes. This makes it easier to have accurate convergence but it makes the perspective so extreme that it undermines the illusion of space. In real life one would basically never ever see a shape that looked like that (e.g., upper right corner on the image of the page marked 162--that's a salient example, but it's a trend through all your boxes especially in the later 150 or so).
Anyway, good job. Your lines are very straight and you are developing a good eye.

next lesson
Very nice work over all. Sometimes it looks like you stopped ghosting and your lines got wobbly (e.g., in free hand perspective). Also you have a tendency to overshoot your line and go a few extra millimeters past where your aiming for (e.g., the organic perspective exercise, the lines overshoot the corners a lot). Keep that in mind as you practice because it makes the boxes look sloppy.
Keep it up. I'm marking this as complete.
Next Steps:
250 box challenge.
Fantastic. I like that you're using the whole page to get maximum mileage. That's a mark of a good student in my opinion. I also like that you're working on an old calendar to save paper--be cautious though as a mark of respect to the course and the people looking at your work it would be better to use cleaner paper, at least in the later lessons when the excercises get more complex and having such lines in the background would be a distraction for the viewer.
Here is my biggest critique: Your freehand boxes have very wobbly lines. But I can tell you can make straighter, better lines by the earlier exercises. That means you may have stopped ghosting and rushed too much. Don't do that.
Keep up the good work. I'm marking this complete.
Next Steps:
250 box challenge.
Nice job getting through the lesson!
Try to get more rounded edges on the bean shapes. You're varying the degrees of the ellipses which is good.
The leg segments of your insects are not curved so they are losing their flow. Look at the demos to see how they can have a satisfying curve. Try another insect or two with that in mind--it could make them look much better.
Nice grass hoppers.
You neglected the cast shadows and line weights to clarify the forms.
Next Steps:
Try a couple more insects, but move onto the next lesson.
It seems your link is broken.
Good job completing another lesson!
To me to be honest, it looked like you were rushing:
Organic shapes--the cross contours are too straight in the middle. Try to visualize it wrapping around a round 3-d shape. Also you neglected to vary the degree as they go along the shape based on the perspective. You should go back and reread the directions and practice that one again at least as a warm up. It's really important.
Mostly you only did one construction per page--it's not specified but if you're filling up pages it's better to do more. The more you practice the more you will get out of it.
Personally, I think you should go back and do more constructions, but technically you did the page count so I'm going to mark this as complete.
Next Steps:
Either go back and work more on this or proceed to the next lesson. Up to you.
Weijak, Thank you so much for your thoughtful critique on both this and lesson 3!! I'm going to keep doing boxes as a warm up and make them bigger!
Good job, I think you're ready to move on.
A couple quick pointers.
You should reread the arrows exercise instructions and practice that as a warm up. Pay careful attention to the way the hatching should be placed and how the swooping should increase as it gets closer to the camera.
Good job on the constructions. In the future you may want to capitalize more on the space of a page and really fill it to get more drawings/practice in before submitting, but this is fine.
Overall great work. Your constructions look precise to me. I think you're ready to move on.
Next Steps:
Move on to the next lesson.
Are you doing branches by connecting each ellipse individually with compound strokes as Uncomfortable instructs? It looks like you might be trying to track the whole branch with one fell swoop. Personally I think that way is easier and gives a more pleasing result, but we should also try to stick with the instructions.
Really impressed with the plants you did. Not only are they convincing constructions but they all have unique character, which is a huge compliment. You do have a tendency to hatch the shadows on a lot of your drawings. It looks good but may also go a little bit outside the instructions we're supposed to do.
Overall, superb work. Your enjoyment of the process shines through and inspires me to do better!!
Next Steps:
Go on to the next lesson! Nice job!!
Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
