Thanks you for your critique! The lineweight is really tricky for me, thanks you for pointing that out!
Thanks you for your critique! The lineweight is really tricky for me, thanks you for pointing that out!
Your mistakes have been significantly dimmed, albeit some slight inconsistency. You may also want to make the points further away from each other, in order to fully utilize your whole arm. But for now, feel free to move on to the next challenge. I wish you good luck.
Next Steps:
250 boxes challenge
I got a 404 error opening your link, can you please check again ?
Next Steps:
Provide the link to your revisions.
Hey there, I will be handling the critique for your lesson 1 homework.
Lines
Starting with the superimposed lines, you are doing a good job at staying at a well-defined initial end, and keeping all the fraying on the other, however, there are some wobbliness and arching is apparent, this is due two not engaging your whole arm when drawing, please try to be mindfull of this issue on your future practice.
Next is your ghosted line, your linework is solid, but you still seem to have some troubles undershooting/overshooting your lines, https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/10/lifthand may help. However, keep in mind that at this stage, staying confident as you move your pen is much more important.
The same can be said to your ghosted plane, overall very well done.
Ellipses
Moving on to your table of ellipses. It is looking tidy instead of rushed, and you are being mindfull of their positioning. The ellipses themself also are a fine job. You also have gone through them the required ammount of time.
You have prioritized smoothness over positioning. And have made an effort to get it to touch all of 4 edges. You hard work have clearly paid of, as your ellipses in plane is looking antiseptic, albeit some inconsistency.
Onwards to your funnels, your ellipses are aligning quite well.
Boxes
Your rough perspective is well done.
On the rough perspective you have tried to keep the alignment of the horizontal sides parallel and the vertical ones perpendicular. However, it seems that you have gone through your lines a number of times, in turn making it quite heavy. No matte how off a line is, you shouldn't repeat it, just keep it as if were correct and move on, I know this is a hard task, as it is a nuisance to face see your mistakes affecting your process. Don't sweat it, they will be dimmed to oblivion as you practice more.
You have done a fine job with your rotated boxes, the gaps between boxes are kept narrowly and each quadrant is looking roughly the same size. On the other hand the same mistake as your rough perspective has become much more perceptible. In addition, your hatching isn't being done from your shoulder, https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/3/consistent broke it down nicely.
Finishing with the organic perspective, here your box constructions are looking solid and believable. They have some inconsistencies but all of this will be addressed in the box challenge. You have did a good job with your first drawabox submission, and feel free to move on to the next challenge. Best of luck!
Lastly remember to practice these exercises as warm-ups, they should take only 5 minutes, and is a great way to sharpen your skills.

However, you are doing a nice work at keeping them overally arc-free.
Next is your ghosted line, your linework is solid and confident, albeit some slight wobbliness.
The same can be said to your ghosted plane's linework. But you can definitely improve on their arrangement.
Ellipse
Onwards to the table of ellipse, the composition is looking tidy instead of rushed, and you are being very mindfull of their positioning.
You have prioritized smoothness over positioning. And have made an effort to get it to touch all of 4 edges. Your hard work have clearly paid of, as your ellipses in plane is looking antiseptic.
Your funnels are well done, albeit some inconsistency.
Boxes
Your plotted perspective is well done.
On the rough perspective you have tried to keep the alignment of the horizontal sides parallel and the vertical ones perpendicular. Aiming to improve your linework is my recommendation, some of your lines arch and wobble slightly. So take your time while ghosting them and draw to the best of your current ability.
Your rotated boxes are turning out very well, you have kept the gaps between boxes narrow and each quadrant is looking roughly the same size. On the other hand your linework isn't ideal, as wobbling is much more apparent.
Finishing with the organic perspective, here your box constructions are looking solid and believable, despite some inconsistency, all of this will be adressed in the box challenge, so don't sweat it too much.
And remember to practice these exercises as warm-ups, they should take only 5 minutes, and is a great way to sharpen your skills.
Next Steps:
Please redo one more page of ghosted line. Make sure you draw your lines confidently, as accuracy isn't our priority at this stage. Your lines shouldn't repeat themself, either, even if they are way off the mark. After you have done your revisions, please reply to this message with it so I can mark it as complete.

Onwards to your funnels, there seem to be a slight confusion on your part, as you are not supposed to draw on the middle, where the two axes collide, but rather to the sides of them. Though this isn't inherently an issue, as your ellipses are aligning quite well.
Boxes
Your rough perspective is well done.
On the rough perspective you have tried to keep the alignment of the horizontal sides parallel and the vertical ones perpendicular, however you have some trouble with connecting the dots. Making your linework looks a little nervous, some of the starting points and ending points are a little thick, this is not against the rule. However keep in mind that you only need to place one with a single press. By making your points thicker, you are being a little bit more lenient with your hitbox, which can lead to you not getting the most out of this exercise, keep that in mind whenever applying the ghosting method.

250 boxes challenge, go break a leg!
Lines

The same can be said to your ghosted plane's linework. And you also have organised them quite neatly.
Ellipse
Onwards to the table of ellipse, the composition is looking tidy instead of rushed, and you are being very mindfull of their positioning. Moving forward you should strive to go through them only two times, as it is ideal for this exercise.
Your ellipses in plane are missing, please reply to this after reading with them so I can have a look.
Your funnels are well done.
Boxes
Your plotted perspective is well done.
On the rough perspective you have tried to keep the alignment of the horizontal sides parallel and the vertical ones perpendicular, you have also trimmed off your mark points, however, it seems like you are not bothering to place them in some of your boxes's corners. This defeats the whole purpose of the ghosting technique, in the future you should always keep this in mind when drawing.
Your rotated boxes are turning out very well, you have kept the gaps between boxes narrow and each quadrant is looking roughly the same size. You can try to add some lineweight to specify the overlaps of the boxes.
And remember to practice these exercises as warm-ups, they should take only 5 minutes, and is a great way to sharpen your skills.
Next Steps:
Reply to this with your ellipses in plane so I can mark your homework as complete.
Hey there Faizahol! I'll be handling the critique for your homework!
Lines
Kicking off with the lines, you are doing a good job at staying at a well-defined initial end, and keeping all the fraying on the other, however, there are some wobbliness and arching is apparent, this is due two not engaging your whole arm when drawing, please try to be mindfull of this issue on your future practice.
The same can be said to your ghosted lines, however, the wobbliness seems to be a little bit more dominant, and you seem to have some trouble with overshooting your linework, which is mentioned at https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/10/lifthand, however, keep in mind that at this stage, staying confident as you move your pen is much more important.
Onwards to the ghosted plane, the mistakes I mentioned is still perceptible on the first page, but you are doing a good job at toning them down on the second. On the other hand, you seem to not place dots for your lines drawn inside of the planes, this is a grave mistake, as placing a starting and ending point is crucial to the ghosting method.
Ellipse
Starting with the table of ellipse, on the first page they are looking a little bit rushed, especially with the smaller ellipses that doesn't get drawn through the required ammount of times, and the positioning is a little bit off. This isn't the case with your second page. But what they do have in common is rough edges, though the incidents of this on the second page is diminished. This again is due two not drawing confidently.
Moving on with your ellipses in plane, I think you are focusing on having them touches all 4 sides, as the wobbliness is very apparent in some of the ellipses. Keep in mind that our priority is smoothness.
Your middle funnels are well done, however the corners ones don't comply with the assignment, as they are not funnels. However your ellipses in them are neatly drawn.
Boxes
The plotted perspective is well done.
On the rough perspective you have tried to keep the alignment of the horizontal sides parallel and the vertical ones perpendicular, but your linework need improvement, some of them arch and wobble slightly. Relax and take your time while ghosting them and draw to your best of your current ability.
Your rotated boxes aren't the best, as they get distored quite heavily, and the size of them remain inconsistent. However this is a challenging assignment, and you shouldn't feel discouraged because of it. As all of this will be addressed in the box challenge.
Finishing with the organic perspective, here your box constructions are looking solid and believable, however some of your lines are being gone over several times and wobble.
Next Steps:
Please do one more page of ghosted line, and one more page of ghosted plane, make sure you draw your lines confidently, as accuracy isn't our priority at this stage. Your lines shouldn't repeat themself, either, even if they are way off the mark. After you have done your revisions, please reply to this message with it so I cann mark it as complete.
Thank you so much for your feedback !
Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.
Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.
These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.
We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.
Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
