    Hello allipses!

Starting with the organic forms you're doing a pretty good job drawing confident lines and drawing the forms consistently, the only issue I can see is that sometimes you draw some of the ends of the sausages a bit bigger than the other ends, the width of the sausage needs to be consistent, so keep an eye on that.

Now into the insects, you're overall doing a great job on making them look solid and believable! The main thingy I've found you're having trouble with is the leg forms, which you are already making a pretty good job on them, but sometimes they are a bit different, like on this one on the grasshopper, so keep an eye on that on lesson 5.

Second thing is that you aren't drawing the intersections between forms which is pretty important, so don't forget you do it on future drawings. Here are some examples on the beetle

Last thing I wanted to comment on is that sometimes there are some additional forms you aren't drawing, which is fine since the important part are the basic forms, but it's good to practice them as well. Some examples too on the beetle

Other than that you're doing a pretty good job, don't forget to ask any questions you may have, keep up the good work and good luck on lesson 5!

    Next Steps:

    Go for lesson 5!

Good job for completing lesson 1. Overall, you did a pretty good job but this wouldn't be a good critique if that was all I said was just that haha.

    Lines

For the super imposed lines, I like how you tried to fill up as much space as you can and drew lines with different lengths but, why didn't you draw any curves? Next time you do this exercise in the warm-ups, practice drawing curves; it'll benefit you in the long run.

For your ghosted lines exercise, your lines were smooth, confident. I did see some overshooting but that's normal.

Not much to say in the ghosted planes exercise, you followed the instructions carefully and did a pretty good job.

    Ellipses:

You did a good job on your ellipses in planes exercise. You had a nice variety of planes to draw your ellipses in so you got a nice variety of ellipses and you tried to fit your ellipses within its boundaries. You did have a bit of a problem with overshooting and undershooting the boundaries but that's normal.

In your table of ellipses, you tried your best to keep the ellipses close together. Some of your ellipses were undershooting the boundaries , so next time you do this exercise in the warm-ups, pay attention to that.

Your funnels are good but sometimes your degrees are a little off, so keep an eye for that too.

    Boxes:

In your rough perspective exercise, your lines were very wobbly compared to your previous exercise. Remember to use the ghosting method, draw with your shoulder and lift your pen when you reach the end point, don't slow down.

In the rotated boxes exercise, your lines were much more smooth. Good job on finishing the rotated box exercise.

In your organic perspective exercise, your lines were smooth but I don't think you fully understand what you have to do. In this exercise, we want the viewer to think the boxes are the same size and just that some are closer to us while others are farther away. We do this by drawing the boxes smaller on the end of the line, that you want to be farther away from the viewer, and gradually increasing the size of the boxes (ex: small-> big-> bigger). But, the sizes of the boxes were inconsistent (big -> small-> big ->big), so it breaks the illusion.

Another thing I noticed was that your boxes were outside of the line, we want the boxes to stay on the line like beads on a string. This also makes things organized and much easier to see, if there's boxes flying around everywhere, anyone who doesn't know what you're trying to accomplish, would be left confused.

Alright that's it for the critique, I hope this helps you.

    Next Steps:

Please redo 2 pages of the organic perspective exercise with everything i said in mind. I recommend watching the video and the text about this exercise before you restart the exercise.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello! I’ll be doing your critique today

    Superimposed lines

The lines are very shaky, but the shorter lines on the second page are better than most. Are you tensing your shoulder or trying very hard to be accurate? If so relax, the purpose of this lesson is to build confidence, not accuracy because you’ll get more accurate as you practice

    Ghosted lines

You’ve done a significantly better job here! The lines are nice and straight and accurate as well, great use of the ghosting method

Ghosted planes and Ellipses in planes

The planes seem fine to me, you looped the ellipses twice or thrice which is good. the ellipses are overshooting in some planes but that’ll go away with time

    Table of Ellipses

Same as the ghosted planes, I see some overshooting but it gets better on the second page, they stay mostly within the rows. Although some of the ellipses aren’t drawn through twice.

    Funnels

Looks like you had some trouble with this at first since some ellipses are out of position but seems like you got the hang of it after a while. You seem absolutely confident in your lines now! Good job!

    Plotted Perspective Boxes

You followed the instructions correctly. There’s no distortion, and the cross hatching is clean

    Rough Perspective Boxes

The boxes on the first page look pretty great! They mostly came very close to the target

You didn’t trace back all the lines on the second page but I checked, and they’re mostly good!

    Rotated Boxes

This is a hard exercise but seems like you understood the concept well. The shape is a bit like a diamond on the top right quadrant, and like a cube on the left quadrants. But the top two quadrants have the best individual boxes. The bottom right quadrant has the best shape of the four as it makes it look spherical (The reason for the diamond shape is that the boxes are too long in some places). Overall, it’s clear that you paid close attention to the vanishing points and managed to make some clean-looking boxes. Great work!

    Organic boxes

Great portrayal of depth, good overlapping, the shape of the boxes are pretty nice too, some look off but the loner boxes look mostly fine. And the boxes look like they’re rotating too

I hope this was helpful, Good luck on your journey and on the 250 box challenge!

    Next Steps:

    • Warm up using the exercises in lesson 1

    • Move onto the 250 box challenge

Hello, before I do the critique, please arrange your pictures in order of the lesson next time you post your work for critique (lines, ellipses and boxes). It's a lot harder to critique you when everything is disorganized.

Overall, you did great! Good job for persevering and pushing through it!

Now let's start the critique :>

    Lines:

Your super imposed lines are pretty good. You made confident strokes and kept the fraying to only one end. I also like how there's a wide range of lines and you used up as much of your page as you could. If there's anything I should say on this, it would be that you should have tried to draw more curves and get some practice in that area too, but it isn't mandatory so no worries.

Your ghosted lines are good as well, even though it didn't connect both dots on some occasions, you still got that confident stroke (majority of time) so even if it isn't accurate the goal isn't accuracy but confident and smooth strokes with no wobbles. I did see some wobbles towards the end of your lines, so remember that it's always better to raise your pen when you reach the point rather than slowing down.

Your ghosted planes had a bit of overshooting but that's normal. I also saw a bit of wobbling, so just make sure to draw with your shoulders and not your wrist or elbows. Anyways you followed the instructions well and you filled up as much space as you could, good job.

    Ellipses:

In your tables of ellipses, I like how you drew a variety of ellipses and kept them very close together. My advice to you for the next time you do this exercise in the warm-ups is, to try and stay within the boundaries, I often see you go past or below the boundaries instead of touching it so you should be more mindful of that.

In the ellipses in planes exercise, you drew your ellipses too many times, it's best to just draw it 2 or 3 times. Once again, I noticed that you were struggling to keep the ellipses touching all the edges of the planes, you were either overshooting or undershooting, so like before i recommend keeping your eyes out on these issues. One thing that would be of use is to always remember to used the ghosting method as many times as you want, start out slowly ghosting your ellipse then speeding it up gradually and then draw the actual ellipse when you feel ready. Dont rush, take your time and relax if needed be.

For the funnels exercise, I still see the problem with keeping your ellipses in the boundaries, don't worry though, this is absolutely normal and we aren't expecting perfection. Moreover, you've improved and I only notice a tiny bit of overlap occasionally, I believe you'd get even more practice in the later lessons and challenges.

    Boxes:

Nothing much I can say on the plotted perspective, you followed the steps well, Good job.

In your plotted perspective exercise, your lines were very wobbly, please remember to use the ghosting method and draw with your wrist. Remember, this is an exercise to help hone your skills so don't worry if it's not exactly accurate, we just want confident lines and with time your accuracy will improve.

Your rotated boxes exercise is great, it seems like you've got the hang of drawing boxes now, good job.

In your organic perspective, your lines were much, much more smoother and confident, so well done. Though, I did notice that some of your boxes were just floating aroung and were not on the line so be more aware of that next time. Another thing to mention is the inconsistent sizes, our goal is to make the viewer believe that all the boxes are the same size but just that one is farther aways while the others are closer, we do that by gradually increasing the size or gradually decreasing the size ( depending on which end of the line you want to start from) of the box, However, I saw that some of your boxes size weren't moving in the order that we intend you to do (small-big-bigger)and instead were moving in an irregular pattern (ex: big- small-bigger), so keep an eye for the size of your boxes next time you do this in warm-ups.

And we're done with the critique! I hope this was helpful and congratz on finishing Lesson 1, don't worry about the mistakes you've made because it's normal and you'll get to practice and improve on it in the next lessons and challenges.

You appear to understand the concepts of lesson one very well, so I think your ready to move on to the 250 box challange!

    Good luck!

Bonus: your ink seemed to run dry in majority of your assignments so i recommend getting another pen.

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 box and challenge, I believe you're ready :>

    Welcome to draw a box!

    Superimposed lines

The lines are reaching the points accurately but the strokes are quite shaky, try to prioritize the straightness of the line over the accuracy because that will improve as you keep practicing. The lines can become shaky if your arm is too tense, try to rotate the page until you're comfortable and increase the stroke speed if it helps.

    Ghosted lines

    Same as superimposed lines.

Ghosted planes and Ellipses in planes

The ellipses are quite accurate but like the lines they too are wobbly.

    Table of Ellipses

Most ellipses are toughing the walls and they aren’t overlapping which is good.

    Funnels

The ellipses are aligned, but you seem to struggle with the ones on the end.

    Plotted Perspective Boxes

    You followed the instructions correctly.

    Rough Perspective Boxes

You are repeating lines quite a bit, and if the perspective is giving you trouble then don’t rush yourself, take a step back and think about how the lines will join the vanishing point, don’t worry too much about the shape of the box that will get better when you start working on the 250 box challenge.

    Rotated Boxes

It looks like you understand how the + part of the box works but you seem to be having trouble with the corners, Don’t worry if it looks off this exercise is difficult and you’ll get better once you learn more about perspective.

    Organic boxes

Some of the boxes are repeating. but again, once you start the 250 box challenge you will get better.

Before moving on to the 250 box challenge I’d like you to revise 1 page of superimposed lines to improve the wobble and 1 page of rough perspective since it looks a bit rushed. I hope this was helpful!

1 page of Rough perspective boxes

I am very much impressed by the effort you put into these exercises, however the only thing I feel you should practice a bit more is drawing through the elipses only twice especially with the elipses in planes exercise. Otherwise you did a very good job.

    Next Steps:

Go on to the 250 box challenge. Good luck ????????

Hi, I'm Zxem and will try my best to critique your work. Before I start, I will divide the lesson into 3 sections which are Lines , Ellipse and Box.

    LINES

    • Superimposed Lines - You are doing good, the lines are clear , no wobbling lines just that the end of the lines are fraying.

    • Ghosted Lines - Those are good , but there are a few lines that are don't reach to point B. So to get better at it, you can put point A , B and then ghost the lines multiple times before you put your lines. Only put the lines down if you are confident :).

    • Ghosted Plane - you are doing great, I can see clearly that you are following the instructions. Keep it up.

    ELLIPSE

    • Ellipse in plane - The a few of the ellipse overlap but overall, you did a great job.

    • Funnel - I have no comments on this either, you are doing great and following the instructions.

    BOXES

    • Plotted perspective - You are doing so well. No comment on this too (???????).

    • Rough Perspective - There are a few lines which are repeating, so it's better to leave them as it as and try not to make the same mistake on next time. Overall you are doing great.

    • Rotate Boxes - Great job , the boxes are clear and there're no gap between them.

    • Organic Perspective - a few of the boxes are didn't follow the perspective and your boxes will get better when you do 250

    Next Challenges: 250 boxes challenges.

    Next Steps:

I'm sure that you are ready for the next challenge and also don't forget to do those exercise as a warm up.

    Good Luck & Congratulation. (???????)?—??

Hello Itsjustg. I'm Starr and I'm here to give you some feedback.

I'll start by evaluating your work by lines, ellipses, and boxes, and then give you some tips for improvement.

    Lines

    • Superimposed Lines: You have little to no fraying at the beginning of each line, which shows you thought about and prepared the placement of your stroke, good work! However, your lines are very wobbly, showing you did not draw quickly or with confidence.

    • Ghosted Lines/ Planes: Your lines are also pretty wobbly in these exercises, but I do notice some smoother lines in your planes exercises. Also, I feel some of your target points are a bit large, especially on your planes. Try to keep your points as small and simple dots so that you have a more precise target to aim for.

    Ellipses

Similar to your lines, you ellipses are also quite wobbly. Though, your ellipses do improve slightly in shape and line confidence. You did well at drawing through your ellipses the recommended 2-3 times. I notice, in your Ellipses in Planes especially, your ellipses are warped to fit within the planes.

    Boxes

    • Plotted Perspective: Your work is good overall. However, your hatching could be cleaner. Hatching should be made of continuous, smooth lines that go across the entire plane of the box.

    • Rough Perspective: You did well at keeping your boxes to one-point perspective. Your lines are still a bit wobbly and it seems you have tried to redo some of your lines. Do not try to correct any mistakes you make. Accept your mistakes and move on to the next stroke. You forgot to trace your lines back to the VP with a different colored pen/pencil on your first page, but you did it on your second page.

    • Rotated Boxes: First of all, your line weight is inconsistent and way too strong on the ones on the left side. Create line weight with the same fineliner as the rest of your lines and only add line weight with 1-2 strokes following the original line. I also notice you did not draw through some of your boxes, some boxes are missing lines.

    • Organic Perspective: Although you redrew a few of your lines, you line quality is much better in this exercise. There is still some wobbling, but they are still smoother than the one in the rotated boxes and rough perspective exercises. Good work!

Overall, your line confidence needs some work. I suggest re-reading through the information given in the "Lines: Markmaking" section of Lesson 1 on the website, to make sure you're following the advice to the best of your ability. I notice some of your lines in the Ghosted Lines and Planes exercises came out quite smooth. Perhaps you tend to move your arm too slow, or you're not ghosting through enough times to reduce your hesitation? You can try ghosting your lines more times before you make your mark and move your arm faster through your stroke (using your shoulder) to see if that helps.

I will ask you to redo your Rotated Boxes exercise. Be sure to focus mainly on making a smooth and confident stroke rather than on accuracy. Try using subtle line weight around the silhouette of at least the first two rows of boxes, which helps keep track of your lines a bit as you work.

I also suggest adding those colored lines to your first page of Organic Perspective. You don't need to resubmit it, but you'll be doing that sort of thing a lot in the 250 box challenge and it's an important step not to forget.

    Next Steps:

Redo your Rotated Boxes exercise and post your work in this thread.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

I've noticed that you have posted all the way up to Lesson 4 without waiting for feedback. Although this is not a hard requirement or even enforceable, I strongly recommend you wait for feedback before continuing your Drawabox journey so that you can get the most out of this site (as explained in Lesson 0). If you are having trouble receiving feedback, I would recommend going to the critique channel in the Drawabox Discord server.

With that out of the way, I am going to start with a critique for your Lesson 1.

Your Superimposed Lines are looking mighty fine!

There were a few of your ghosted lines that looked a bit wobbly. This doesn't seem to be a major issue with your lines in general, but I would look for it nonetheless.

Your ellipses look very good in your tables, but not all of them are being drawn through. It looks like you corrected this issue yourself as you moved on however.

Many of your ellipses look deformed in the Ellipses in Planes exercise. Try drawing them more confidently. Smoothness should be your top priority.

Your Funnels are looking pretty good. There is a bit of looseness on some of your ellipses, but it doesn't seem to be a major issue.

Your Plotted Perspective, Rough Perspective, Rotated Boxes, and Organic Perspective are all looking good. No corrections for those!

I think that you did a fine job with these exercises, so I am going to move on to your next assignment. Please do not take this as an excuse to move on without feedback however, as I still believe that it will greatly benefit you.
