    hello Hiroeme,

    welcome to draw a box,

Its always good to have figured out your weaknesses, I'll be looking further into it.

    Lines:

Foremost, i would like to say that dont draw lines that arent related to the lesson, i'm talking about the little curve line in your first page.

You have shown good effort in superimposed lines, however i do sight a little wobbly lines here and there. make sure to draw from your shoulder and ghost them for every lines make. Patience is the key.

You have drawn Confident ghosted lines, keep it up, same with the planes too.

    Ellipses:

As you've said, your ellipses do tend to go over the boundary, but its a very normal thing. For a beginner, you have done it fine. Again, its all a matter of ghosting and drawing through your shoulder, you'll be able to do it more accurate with time. You have followed through the instruction right, going through the ellipses 2 or 3 times, and you are focused on fitting the ellipses in given boundaries, So i dont see much problem here. There are some stiffed lines in ellipses, but again that a smooth line can be built as a habit with time.

    Boxes:

I have nothing to say about the plotted perspective, its neat and i hope you found a tiny dive into a 3D space. Again, pretty good lines in boxes as well. You have mentioned about lines curving towards the end, thats possibly because you mistakenly drew it from wrist or arms. Besides, it also takes time to be able to control your shoulder freely. So you dont have to stress about it too much.I'm amazed with your rotated boxes, its so neat and the boxes are well rotated. Thats a quality work there. Finally about the organic perspective, I think you should be drawing that guide line with the principles of markmaking too, because they look wobbly. Overall they are well drawn.

Lastly, as you have read through it, you know i've been mentioning about making drawing through shoulder and ghosting a habit. So its best to do a little warmup with these exercises included for 5-10 minutes before you start a lesson everytime.

    Next Steps:

    go on to 250 box.

hello there, thank you very much for taking your time to critique my work. I cant thank enough for this, i'll be uploading the warmup cylinders in discord server instead as i believe that way will be much efficient, and yes they will be drawn be keeping your suggestions and advice in mind. Thank you again, it's very much appreciated.

    hello there,

    welcome to drawabox,

i'm sorry you had to wait for months to get your work critiqued, so lets go forward now,

lines : I recommend you to read about the superimposed lines again. wobblylines. This is the foremost mistake you have done. dont draw from your wrists, Draw from your shoulder. ghost your lines before drawing them. Prioritize confidence of line over accuracy here. The ghosted lines is okay, though a little weak, it should be fine as you keep practising them. The planes are much better. and looks confident.

Ellipses : The lines feels quite stiff. Let your lines flow with confidence as you draw them with shoulder and ghosting them. Though, the ellipses arent very perfectly snuggly fitted, i see the attempt here, so its alright. try to snuggly fit them as much as possible. On top left row of second page in table ellipses, you have drawn through the ellipse just once, that is a clear mistake there. Draw through the ellipses twice or thrice. it helps to buildup muscle memory and is rewarding in long run. I dont think the funnel exercise was supposed to be drawn that way, you are supposed to draw two side curves with the help of circular object and draw ellipses in between based on those guide curves. They align to the minor axis well and it almost cuts them in symmetry halves. The ellipse in funnels , feels stiff too. the ellipses in planes are fine. you can do better with time and practice.

Boxes : pretty neat plotted perspective. I suppose you forgot the hatching lines ? Rough perspective is fine too. The lines have ocassional wobbles here as well . You will get to experiment with perspective more in upcoming lessons. about the rotated box, You havent drawn through the boxes in the top right corner. Drawing the backward lines of box is very essential as it helps you to relate to 3D space.https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/17/notdrawingthrough. Your boxes are more on converging side than rotating. The area of plane facing us gets compressed vertically as it faces farther away from us. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/17/notrotating . the organic perspective is fine, the only problem it has is its lines. You are supposed to apply what you learnt in previous exercises here too.

    Next Steps:

-a page of superimposed lines. ( Go through the lesson again and do it the right way)

    • a page of oganic perspective (with lines that are drawn with intent and shows confidence which can only be acquired through ghosting)

i'll mark your lesson complete after i view your work.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

    hello there,

i"m sorry you had to wait quite a while,

    welcome to drawabox.

i'll be looking over your lesson 1 .

lines : very great superimposred lines. The short lines and the curves are precised. The longest lines have many wobbleness in it. Its fine, due to its lenght you must have felt overwhelmed. All you have to do is ghost until you feel like its a piece of cake. and also make sure to draw from yyour shoulder. heres a fun comic about it

great ghosted lines ! they are confident and neat. (lets overlook some wobbles, because we are still learning) . your planes are well drawn ,following the lesson's parameters too.

ellipses : Very cool , but some ellipses arent snuggly fitted . Smooth lines again !! you have followed the lesson instrution properly . your funnel exercise is also good : its snuggly fitted, ellipses are drawn through 2 times, they align to minor axis well and it cuts them in almost symmetrical halves. Nothing to worry about here.

Boxes : No words in plotted perspective , its very neat. fine work with rough perspective. the lines are well drawn. and your horizontal lines does run close to being parallel to horizon and height of box being perpendicular to the horizon line. Dont worry over the accuracy of perspective for now as you will be experimenting with it upcoming challenge. In the rotated box, the boxes arent quite rotating i 'd say. The area of plane facing us will gradually decrease as the box gets rotated. heres a reference. The lines are getting weaker in the organic perspective. Always make sure to draw from your shoulder and ghost them. Apply what you've learnt. Take this course as a journey.

You have done a splendid work. So i'm marking your lesson complete

    hello there

welcome to draw a box. We are happy to know that you enjoyed the challenge.

i'll be looking over your lesson 1 , so lets seewhat we have got here,

Lines : I see confident superimposed lines so thats a plus point. Some lines at the end seems as tho it is about to fray from the begining end as well, so i recommend you to try to minimize that. You have good ghosted lines too, just some wobbles here and there. make sure to draw from your shoulder and ghost your lines. it is very important to do so. In ghosted planes, it seems you were struggling with the middle line, since most were drawn away fromm the centre point. In this case as well, i recommend you to ghost until you feel where the line should be drawn at. Ghosting will really solve the matter.

Ellipses : Smooth lines you have there in table of ellipses. The problem i see is , ellipses overstepping the boundaries, and it seems you have drawn through them 3 times (not really a mistake, but keeping it 2 times will help us see properly). i see ellipses being stiff in the lowest row of 2nd page. All you have to do is ghost and draw from shoulder for both confident outllook and accuracy buildup in over some time. Same with ellipses in planes as well. In funnel exercise, the ellipses arent aligning to the major axis and minor axis too . here. Go through the article again and improvise on how you can avoid this mistake. i think you drew too less funnel and the funnel on top left corner isnt how a funnel exercise is supposed to be done.

Boxes : Pretty good with plotted perspective. Organic perspective is good too , because you were careful with your lines. dont worry about perspective not being very accurate because you can learn them more in next challenge. Your rotated box doesnt so much feel like they are rotating. here. you are fine with organic perspective. but the lines are begining to arc here, so constantly remind yourself to draw from shoulder until it becomes a habit.

    Next Steps:

i am marking this lesson complete, becuase overall you have done a fine work. I recommend you to practise this daily (if possible) as a warmup exercise inorder to train your hand in better markmaking. i was a little skeptical about your funnel exercise but its fine as long as you include those in your warmup exercise.

so, best of luck in 250 box challenge

    Hello rafael,

i will be looking over your lesson 2 , so lets see what we have got here

    Arrows :

Good confidence of line, i will over look the wobbly line arrow in top right corner of 1st page and one in middle of your 2nd page. you've properly compressed the width of the arrows but i'm concerned about the "space" which is not compressing reference here and in some arrows its reverted too. . I see you have made some arrows reverted , the arrows end being farther and the blunt end being nearer to the viewer. I wont really deem it as a mistake because its not that bad and some technical facts like perspective is on point. But i will recommend you to not do more than the lesson has advised. Good use of line weight. It seems it was being properly shosted and then drawn. The hatching is also fine.

    Organic forms:

They sure do feel solid thanks to the change in degree of ellipses and curves inside the organic form. i will mention you about the "shape" of the organic form. What you have done cant really be called a mistake but i'm sure you could do lot better. keep your sausages simple and avoid midsection pinch, plus the ends of sausage should be made of two identical spheres . reference here. try ghosting your organic forms before drawing them too. The contour curves and ellipses do fit well inside the sausage form, and are confidently drawn. nice work.

    Texture :

The texture analysis is fine but the transition isnt very smooth. Your dissection part is very interesting and cool. You have done great job in breaking the silhouette which helps to convey the information more accurately. You have a little problem with wrapping the silhouette with texture. As i can see in ginger, the texture line should be curved with respect to the curve surface of the organic form. same with the end of seashell's , curve those texture lines . reference here

    Form intersection :

The forms are consistent. good and confident lines, overall it feels solid, and the intersections are on point as well.

i see a little problem in your organic intersection though, You know the shadow is supposed to take the shape of the form it is being casted upon. reference here

we are supposed to make the sausage that feels like water balloons , they'd float while still maintaining the 3d form. so i'd say the slender sausage on top right of your second page feels quite stiff. here's the reference

so thats it. you've made some minor mistakes here and there. Just make sure to go over them once again and try to avoid such mistakes in future. Overall, you've done fine so i'm marking this lesson complete.

    Next Steps:

    on to lesson 3.

    Hello there,

    welcome to draw a box.

Congratulations on your graduation !! its okay whenever you do your lessons as long as you arent grinding on exercises . Also, really follow the 50% rule, its beneficial .

I'll be looking over your lesson 1, lets see what we have got here,

Lines: No complains, they are neat, drawn confidently and bold. You have propely followed the instructions. You did very great with curved superimposed lines that just shows that they were ghosted very well . You were patient and efficient with it. Very Great with the lines keep this up i.e. drawing from shoulder, ghosting and building confidence in yourself and in lines.

Ellipses : Nothing less from ellipses as well. Though, its better to draw through your circles just twice, you've drawn through circles thrice which is also okay. I can feel a little stiffness in lines of some of your ellipses but dont sweat about it, you'll be able to do it smoothly in no time as you keep up the practise in warmup exercises. Here too, you have dilligently followed through the instructions, they are intended to snuggly fit in, you've drawn through ellipses, the ellipses are aligned to major axis in funnel exercise , the minor axis neatly cut ellipses in halves. Though, i'll mention about some of your ellipses overlapping to each other or to borderline in table of ellipse , try minimizing simple errors as those. Great one as well !

Boxes : No comments on plotted perspective, its neat and well construted. very well with rough perspective too. Your lines is as gorgeous as in lines exercise. You've applied what you've learnt. And yeah, you do seem to have a proper gist of perspective, which is cool. You'll be learning about it more in 250 boxes as well. Your boxes are rotating very well in rotated box. You must have forgotten to add line weight and the line shading , since its not that important in this exercise so nevermind. well done with organic perspective as well.

    .

    .

Your rotated box's exercise got me concerned, Yes its very neat and gorgeous but I hope you didnt simply copied drew it from the example work to make it look like that . we are supposed to visualize rotating box in our head and draw them instead of just copying them like exactly from the example work. Being able to create pretty works is great too. But here, one of the purpose of the exercise is also to make students brainstorm about the space and how these boxes are relating to each other. It is supposed to be drawn with lots of educated guessworking and brainstorming like being aware about the convergence, vanishing points , rotations etc. Its just a reminder, and i am not doubting your abilities either just a little concerned about it. let me hear from your parts too.

Overall great job ! Congratulation on completing lesson 1.

    Best wishes,

    -Tryingtodrawabox

Staedtler Pigment Liners

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
