Yes, the organic arrows look much better. Your construction n the second image is also very clear and strong.
Next Steps:
Move on to Lesson 4. Good Luck!

Hello, I'll be reviewing your submission today
organic arrows- solid
leaves- solid
branches- a little too thick compared to the rest of the drawings, but solid
constructional drawings:
these are solid, although many of you drawings seem to deviate a little from your construction lines, when the expectation for this exercise is to follow the construction lines as a rule, not a guideline. however, the intent and preparation behind each drawing is clear. however, some constructions ( like the flower petals on page 4 ) are also a bit inconsistent and don't seem to be part of the same plant.
overall, solid. I would advise following your construction lines more closely, even if it feels like deviating from them makes the drawing look better.
Next Steps:
Move on to Lesson 4, keeping in mind the notes on constructional drawing
Hello, I'll be reviewing your lesson 3 submission today.
organic arrows- solid
leaves- the steps for construction are clear, and the linework is solid. however, it would be nice to see a little more variety
branches- some lines don't overlap properly. otherwise, solid
constructional drawings-
overall solid construction and texture work. the only thing I would say is that some of the references you took may have had an unusual perspective, which makes some of the constructions look a bit unnatural like the cactus on page 8 and the mushrooms on page 5. however, I commend you for challenging yourself with harder perspectives.
overall, your submission is solid.
Next Steps:
move on to lesson 4
hello, I'll be critiquing your lesson 1 submission.
superimposed lines- solid
ghosted lines- solid, although some lines are missing the mark greatly. remember to be patient when ghosting
ghosted planes- solid
tables of ellipses- solid, although some ellipses fall outside the table a little
ellipses in planes- solid, although like the tables exercise some ellipses fall outside the border
funnels- solid
plotted perspective- solid
rough perspective- you seemed to struggle with this one, as many of the lines are missing the mark by a lot. also, some of the initial rectangles also look a bit wobbly. even if it's not the main exercise, I suggest using the opportunity to practice ghosting whenever you can.
rotated boxes- good, especially for a beginner
organic perspective- solid. not much variety in the box angles and shapes, but you will get a lot of practice with boxes soon.
Next Steps:
move on to the 250 boxes challenge.
Remember to be careful when ghosting the lines to construct each box.
Hello, I'll be critiquing your lesson 3 submission today.
organic arrows- I feel like these are a little messy, and many of them do not seem to be changing perspective. however, your lines are neat and solid
leaves- solid, with good constructional lines.
branches- some lines overshoot the ellipse mark, making it look janky; this is a common beginner error. otherwise, solid
construction- overall, you did a good job with your constructions. the constructional shapes are clear, and most of the textures are good. however, I felt that the texture on the 6 drawing (the cactus) looked a bit rushed and in parts didn't wrap around the shape. however, the main focus is construction, and you did well in that department.
an additional note- according to the instructions, less than half of the constructional drawings should be done from the demos, meaning at most 3 out of 5 drawings done with the demo. however, 4 out of 8 drawings are done with the demo for your lesson 3 submission. Remember to read the instructions more carefully in the future.
Overall, not bad, but I feel that your organic arrows are rushed and you need one more constructional drawing to finish the requirements of the homework (less than half the drawings from the demo.)
Next Steps:
1 page organic arrows. remember to add perspective. refer to the lesson 2 page if you're confused
1 additional constructional drawing of a plant of your choosing.
If you do these I think you're good.
Hello! I'll be critiquing your submission today.
Overall, you did a great job!
Organic arrows- solid, although some aren't in perspective
Branches- solid. Some lines aren't joining properly but that's expected of a beginner
Leaves- solid, although I wish you experimented with more shapes and types of leaves
Constructions- you did a good job drawing constructional shapes before drawing. The only one I think could've been a lot better is the chamerion latitolium, as the petals are missing construction lines
Besides a few areas for improvement, you did well! I recommend being more open to push yourself into experimenting with different types of leaves and branches in the future. This also applies to the next lesson. Trying new things is the best way to learn, after all
Next Steps:
Great job! Take a break, then move on to Lesson 4
Hello, I'll be critiquing your homework today!
superimposed lines- solid
ghosted lines-solid, but some of your lines seem to curve slightly. try ghosting a little opposite of the direction your hand naturally curves in
ghosted planes- solid. similar critique to ghosted lines
tables of ellipses- solid, although some of the ellipses don't touch the border
ellipses in planes- solid, although it seems like you drew through some of the ellipses more than 4 times. remember that you're only supposed to draw through them twice. too many times can make your drawings seem like they lack confidence and make it a bit harder to critique
funnels- solid for a beginner
plotted perspective- solid, although i recommend experimenting with extra line weight to help see the boxes clearer
rough perspective-solid, although I see that the lines on the face of the boxes aren't ghosted properly. remember to take your time when ghosting, even if it's not the main focus of the exercise
rotated boxes- many beginners struggle with this, but you did quite well. Good Job!
organic perspective- a lot of the boxes look similar. however, you will soon be getting a lot of practice with drawing different boxes so it's not so bad.
Overall, I think you did well. remember to practice ghosting a few lines before jumping into the 250 box challenge, and remember that you also have to ghost lines during the challenge. also, take your time with your drawings- it's tempting to try to get through it quickly but a slower, more patient pace will help you avoid burnout and make you a better artist.
Next Steps:
Move on to the 250 box challenge
No problem! I'm really grateful for your feedback. thank you so much!
hello, I'll be reviewing your 250 box challenge
first of all congratulations! you overcame drawabox's first major (and most important) hurdle.
now, for the feedback
1) you have shown tremendous improvement in the way you draw boxes, and also you line quality
2) while you didn't add line weight to your boxes, I would suggest practicing this in future warm ups, as it can really help improve your skills even further.
3) you seem to be struggling a little with the back corner. this is a common struggle, and will get better with more practice
4) even towards the end, some of the lines seem to be diverging away from each other rather than converging towards a vanishing point. it might have been hard to notice because the divergence looks very slight.
all in all, good job! remember to keep this feedback in mind as you practice in the future
Next Steps:
take a break, and move on to Lesson 2 when you're ready
hello, ill be critiquing your homework
organic arrows- solid
contours- solid, although you added more ellipses than needed. also, some ellipses are the same width, which removes the impression that it is a 3D form
texture analysis- solid
dissections- solid, although some textures don't wrap around the form, particularly peeling paint and tentacles don't show much change in size or perspective
form intersections- solid, although you are supposed to submit one page of boxes only. however, I will let it slide as you did well
organic intersections- this could use a little more practice in the future, as you seemed to struggle with drawing the forms on top of each other. however, the shadows were ok for the forms you drew
remember to include organic intersections as part of your warmups in the future
overall, you did well
Next Steps:
take a break, move on to lesson 3
Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.
The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
