3 and 8 are still coming towards the viewer. You said before that you weren’t sure how to make the shading look like it’s on the side of the box instead of the back, and I think that’s making you still extend the lines in the wrong direction.

Up there, I colored in the part you should be shading to make it look like it’s the side of the box instead of the back. I think you’ve been shading between the wrong lines

None of these look like the back corners of the boxes. They all look like front corners closest to the viewer. I think this might be because your lines are still off from one another. Slow down and really look at the direction a line is going in before trying to match it with another. And really ghost that line before drawing it

I think adding line weight would help with this. Lightly applying it to the outline of the box will show what’s in front and what isn’t

You have more good boxes than bad for sure. I can’t really understand the orientation of boxes 3, 6, 7, and 10 though. It looks like for all but 7, you shaded the bottom. And for 7, you shaded the back of the box. Was that your intention?

Ok, I think I see the issue now. You’re more consistently getting the line extensions right, but there’s still at least one on every page where you aren’t. When you do the hatching on your boxes, do you sometimes hatch the faces that aren’t pointed towards the viewer? It looks like that’s what you’re doing, and it seems like that might be the reason you’re still extending the lines in the wrong direction.

    Next Steps:

I recommend 15 boxes this time, but make sure you hatch one of the faces of the box that’s turned towards you, not one of the ones in the back. That might help you perfect these line extensions

No problem, these are much easier to read. Except for the yellow pen at first. Your line extensions are still going in the wrong directions. They have to go AWAY from the viewer, never towards. And I see your boxes are still regularly coming out strangely shaped. I think you might be trying to make the lines converge too much, which is resulting in boxes that aren’t boxes sometimes. You don’t really have to try that hard to MAKE the lines converge. Even if the lines of a box don’t look like they’re converging, they still are. They just do so very far off the page.

    Next Steps:

I recommend 25 more this time, keeping in mind that the line extensions go away from the viewer and that you don’t really have to force the lines to converge on the page

Thank you for the rest. I'm going to be honest: this was hard to grade. Our boxes are supposed to have different orientations, but it seems you turned the entire page in order to draw new boxes, which forced me to have to constantly turn my screen. I actually thought a lot of your line extensions were wrong at first because I didn’t realize the whole page needed to be turned to make sense of it.

Your boxes are really inconsistent for some reason. Sometimes, they’re near perfect and other times, they’re really distorted. I think it might be you taking things too far when trying to make the perspective dramatic. And also, your line weight was inconsistent too. It wasn’t there at first, and then it was there, but way too dark, and then it wasn’t there anymore. Remember, it’s just a subtle outlining of the box with none to the inner lines.

I recommend 50 more boxes after re-reading the additional notes on shallow vs dramatic perspective and distortion, keeping in mind what i said about line weight and making sure you’re not rotating the page every time you want to start a new box. And make sure your lines always extend away from the viewers.

50 more boxes with the suggested changes in mind

Hi, I'll be grading your work today. Your lines are wobbly, which can be helped by ghosting your lines as Uncomfortable said and quickly executing the line. Your perspective is off as well, which is leading to some oddly shaped boxe. But that will improve with practice. The main problem though is that there only seems to be 13 boxes? Unless Imgur is having some issues and not loading the rest, you only did 13 out of the 250 we're supposed to do. I can't fully, really grade if it's not finished. Did you have trouble uploading the rest? I know Imgur has given me some issues before with uploading multiple pictures at once.

    Next Steps:

I need to see the rest of the boxes

Hi, I'll be grading your homework today. The pages were out of order, so it was a bit hard to navigate, but I see that your line extensions consistently go in the right directions and your lines aren't wobbly or anything. However, your lines become extremely thick. I'm not sure if it's because you were attempting to add line weight or if it was because you drew over your lines multipe times to get them right. It looks like the case in multiple places. We're definitely not supposed to do that. Uncomfortable wants us to use smooth lines executed all at once, even if they're lacking accuracy. Also, I can't seem to find anymore boxes past 235 when we're supposed to do 250.

    Next Steps:

I need to see the rest of the boxes. Just be careful and ghost your lines before committing them to paper. No drawing over them to get them right. After that, you should be good to move on to the next lesson.

Hey, I'll be grading your homework today. First off, congrats on finishing. This takes a lot of time. That said, WHOA, these are amazing. Smooth, confident lines right out the gate. Only criticisms I have are that your line weight is inconsistent sometimes, darkening the inside instead of just the outside, and that you had a few boxes where you only extended one set of lines. Only a few (like two or three) though. The rest of your line extensions are near perfect, barring a handful of mistakes there too that you seemed to recognize. I give you a pass.

    Next Steps:

Move on to Lesson 3. Good luck, and God bless

Wescott Grid Ruler

Wescott Grid Ruler

Every now and then I'll get someone asking me about which ruler I use in my videos. It's this Wescott grid ruler that I picked up ages ago. While having a transparent grid is useful for figuring out spacing and perpendicularity, it ultimately not something that you can't achieve with any old ruler (or a piece of paper you've folded into a hard edge). Might require a little more attention, a little more focus, but you don't need a fancy tool for this.

But hey, if you want one, who am I to stop you?
