Hello, I’ll be doing your critique today!

    Organic Arrows

Very nice sense of perspective and depth; in some of the arrows you’ve drawn the hatched lines on the outside, we’re trying to indicate a shadow that helps add to the depth like so:

    https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/f875589f.jpg

    Organic forms with contour lines

The ellipses are pretty good, they curve along with the sausage well. But some of them don’t rotate like I’d expect them to. This might help:

    https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/dc19ce85.jpg

The contours seem like a bit of a miss, you aren’t confident or not ghosting enough and that’s making the curves shaky and flat, try to ghost the curves as you do with an ellipse and then draw an overshooting curve.

    Texture

The analysis is really good! the cast shadows are properly drawn, the dark-to-light gradient is pretty good too. I can see a few outlines on the last texture but that might just be the part of the texture itself.

    Dissections

Amazing work here! you’ve broken the silhouette perfectly and the textures look great and curve with the form, I love the variety too!

    Form Intersections

It seems like you understand the concept, good work!

    Organic Intersections

Nice, clean sausages, I really feel like that’s how they’d stack up! You’ve even managed to make complex forms look like they belong, great work here! you’ll do well in Lesson 5.

I hope this helped and good luck!

    Next Steps:

    1. Keep practising your ellipses

    2. Move on to Lesson 3

Hello, I’ll be doing your critique today!

    Organic Arrows

Your lines are confident enough and nice cross-hatching! but in some of your arrows the increase in depth isn’t portrayed properly, take the bottom left arrow on the first page for example, the arrow starts and ends with an increase in depth but the middle part is fairly consistent. Another thing to note is that some of the cross-hatching is done on the outside of the arrow when it should face inside.

    This image might help:

    https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/f875589f.jpg

Also, personal opinion, those arrows on the second page look like they would make cool castle flags!

    Organic forms with contour lines

The ellipses are pretty good, they curve along with the sausage well. They also follow the motion of the sausage so that good too!

The contours seem like a bit of a miss, your lines aren’t confident so it seems like this was a little hard for you, try to ghost the lines a bit more to get some nice smooth lines.

    Texture

The analysis is really good! the cast shadows are properly drawn and there are no outlines, the dark to light gradient is pretty good too.

    Dissections

This is amazing, you’ve broken the silhouette perfectly and the textures look great! Some of them on the first page feel flat but you got it perfectly in the second one.

    Form Intersections

Some of the shapes look a bit off, the cylinders most of all don’t look natural on the back end, they look static.

    Remember, the cylinders change angles:

    https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/dc19ce85.jpg

    Organic Intersections

Nice, clean sausages, I really feel like that’s how they’d stack up!

I hope this helped and good luck!

    Next Steps:

    Move on to Lesson 3!

Thank you so much for the thorough critique! I'll keep what you said in mind.

    Here are the corrections:

I added another page of disections trying to break the silhouette like you suggested

Your superimposed lines look so much better!

The ellipses have improved too, I see you didn't course correct this time and the shape is alot better too!

And your approach with the organic perspective boxes is absolutely valid and works great! you actually gave me a really good idea for this exercise :D

Anyway you are ready to take the next step which is the 250 box challenge, it is difficult in the sense that you have to do the same basic thing but there are a lot of shapes a box can take and even more angles you can place them in. just be sure to read through the exercise and take your time with this.

Here's a tool you can use for first few dozen boxes if you're having trouble thinking up a box:

and some references too, in case you need some:

Have a great day and good luck on your journey!

Hello! I’ll be doing your critique today.

    Superimposed lines

The lines a pretty wobbly and fraying at the ends too, this usually happens with overthinking, loosen up, rotate the page as much as you need to, and then make a smooth confident stroke.

    https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/5bcda336.jpg

Don’t worry about accuracy this early in the course, build up your confidence! Aside from that the lines aren’t fraying at the start so nice to see that you took your time.

    Ghosted lines

The lines look a lot more confident here! keep it up!

Ghosted planes & Ellipses in planes

Nice to see that the lines are more confident, good variation of plane angles and the ellipses are looped. There is quite a bit of undershooting here and some of the ellipses look egg-shaped. Try to take the lines of the plane as a reference while you’re ghosting and then without course correction make a confident stroke.

    Table of Ellipses

Quite a few ellipses don’t fit very snuggly with each other but you already knew that. There is more undershooting and course correction. Are you making sure to draw from your shoulder? or maybe you’re too tense?

    https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/a76a8906.jpg

Your smaller circles and angled ellipses look the best so try to recreate what you did with those.

    Funnels

The ellipses have less course correction than before so that’s good, the ellipses are well aligned to where the major and minor axis should be, and they all fit well enough with each other. Good work here.

    Plotted Perspective Boxes

You followed the instructions properly, although I think you used a pencil for the hatching. That aside I hope this exercise helped you understand perspective, if not I recommend watching some videos about 1-point and 2-point perspective.

    Rough Perspective Boxes

Seems like you get the gist of the exercise, even if you rushed this part. And some of the lines weren’t traced back. Slow down, take your time, keep the 50-50 rule in mind and have fun!

    Rotated Boxes

Despite being a difficult exercise, you understood it well. Each box has its own vanishing point and the x-ray vision shows that a lot of the boxes are the right size and that you understand the perspective, the overall shape is circular but you forgot about the corner most boxes. Still good work here!

    Organic perspective boxes

The boxes are rotating which is good, great portrayal of depth, a good variation of boxes too. but you were supposed to make three frames containing these on both pages like so:

    https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/368870697742630912/1070709610043936788/IMG_20230202_221551.jpg?width=326&height=433

Overall, you have done a fair job, you did improve from the first page but take your time or you might get burned out.

I'd like you to do one page of superimposed lines, another table of ellipses and the rest of the organic perspective boxes before moving on.

    https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/f4181ea2.jpg

    Next Steps:

1 page of super imposed lines

1 page of table of ellipses

2 pages of organic perspective boxes

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Yeah burnout can be a real pain, i'd keep the 50-50 rule in mind, it really helps.

It can be anything really, a doodle, fanart, anything that let's you just relax and enjoy drawing for the sake of drawing. I like to breakdown panels from my favourite manga and try to recreate them, it helped me alot to improve my art as well.

Also, the box challenge is hard so here, might help:

Hello! I’ll be doing your critique today.

    Superimposed lines

The lines are fraying quite a bit the diagonal lines seem like the best ones but I see no fraying at the starting point so good job for taking your time with this, try to rotate the page as much as you need to. But don’t worry these will get better as you practice.

    Ghosted lines

Great job here! you understand the ghosting method perfectly! The lines are brimming with confidence and are quite accurate too!

    Ghosted planes

Good angle variations, only slight overshooting. It’s nice to see that you take your time with these

    Table of Ellipses

Good variation of ellipses, the ellipses are looped, and the overshooting/undershooting is pretty minor. There is some overlap on the second page. But the ellipses get better on the second page too so you’re improving.

The lines are wobbly here so try to relax, it’s great that you’re taking your time with all of these but make sure you’re not overthinking everything. Loosen up your shoulder, rotate the page as much as you need, then use the ghosting method enough to make a confident stroke. It’s confidence over accuracy right now, you’ll get better with time.

    Ellipses in planes

They’re pretty accurate showing you understand the perspective side of things well enough, but your lines did become a little shaky here but that seems like you already know :D

    Funnels

Don’t worry about failing! It’s part of the process, you’ll get very good with ellipses in perspective once you suffer go through the 250-cylinder challenge waaayyyy down the line, you can keep using these exercises as a warm-up before drawing (not as intensely of course).

    Plotted Perspective Boxes

You followed the instructions properly, the line weight makes each box stand out and the perspective is very clear. Good hatching too!

    Rough Perspective Boxes

The lines are shaky again but most lines meet roughly where they were supposed to, the 250-box challenge up next will help you improve boxes in perspective.

    Rotated Boxes

Despite being a difficult exercise, you understood it well enough. Each box has its own VP which is good, the lines are confident again, and the hatching and line weight makes everything clear. The overall shape is pretty circular. But I would say that the corner most boxes are the weakest. Having some of the top plane showing would’ve made it better for your specific set of rotated boxes.

Oh and through the x-ray vision the boxes are quite long too, but you’ll get better at presenting what you see as you practice.

    Organic perspective boxes

Your scanner dulled or erased some of the lines, try not to use a scanner filter it might make things harder to see as the lessons progress and the drawings get more complex. That aside you have a great sense of depth and the boxes are rotating pretty well.

Overall, you have done a great job! You understood the purpose of each exercise and understand what didn’t go right.

Use a 10 or so minute warm-up with these exercises and keep at it! You seem pretty enthusiastic about this so good luck on your journey!

    Next Steps:

Move onto the 250 box challenge.

Use a 10 minute warm up using these exercises.

    Don't use a scanner filter.

Hello! I’ll be doing your critique today.

    Superimposed lines

Very little fraying on the straight lines, and no wobble either great job! The S curves are a little shaky but the over curves are better.

    Ghosted lines

Wow… this is amazing, not only are the lines full of confidence they’re accurate too! Honestly, these lines came out better than they do from a ruler!

    Ghosted planes

Slight overshooting, but it’s mostly unnoticeable. Good angles.

    Ellipses in planes

There is some Overshooting/undershooting but don’t worry too much, focus on the shape of the ellipse, it seems like you tried to correct quite a few ellipses mid-stroke but that’ll get better in time.

    Table of Ellipses

Good variation of ellipses, the ellipses are looped, and the overshooting/undershooting is pretty minor.

    Funnels

The ellipses are all mostly aligned to both axes and the perspective ones look good too.

    Plotted Perspective Boxes

You followed the instructions a little too well, these look really good, the line weight makes each box stand out and the perspective is very clear. Great hatching too!

    Rough Perspective Boxes

Pretty good, no critiques here! you’ll get even better during the 250 box challenge.

    Rotated Boxes

Despite being a difficult exercise, you understood it pretty well! The shape is circular, the boxes have their own VPs and hatching makes everything clear.

    Organic perspective boxes

Some of the frames like the 3rd one of the 1st and the last 2 frames of the second page have little rotation, I’d say the best one is the 2nd frame of the first page.

Overall, you have done a great job! I think you have talent or experience or both! Don’t forget to use these exercises as a small warm-up before drawing. It will improve your lines and perspective further.

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 box challenge.

Hello! I’ll be doing your critique today.

    Superimposed lines

The lines are slightly wobbly and frayed at the end too, better on the second page.

    Ghosted lines

Your lines aren’t very confident here either, make sure to ghost your lines and rotate your page as much as you need before making a smooth stroke.

Ghosted planes and Ellipses in planes

The lines have improved, and you’re looping the ellipses too, there is little overshooting but it’s very minor, the accuracy is very good but at this point in time try to keep your line smoother than accurate. I’ll talk about the second page since you have improved a lot from the first, there is only slight overshooting or undershooting but it’s mostly all good!

    Table of Ellipses

You didn’t loop a lot of the ellipses on the first page but the second is fine. The overshooting is a little more noticeable. You’ll get better with practise.

    Funnels

You’re doing better with the strokes and the funnels appear well-made. I’d say the smallest one on the top right is the best, smooth lines, nice placement.

    Plotted Perspective Boxes

You followed the instructions correctly. There’s no distortion and the cross hatching is very clean.

    Rough Perspective Boxes

The lines are more confident now, it’s a little hard to see what’s happening since the red lines don’t end on the horizon line, but I suppose it’s good enough. You’ll get plenty of practice in the 250-box challenge to get comfortable with boxes

    Rotated Boxes

Despite being a difficult exercise, you understood it pretty well! You’ve done a good job rotating the boxes and the overall shape came out quite round.

    Organic boxes

Great portrayal of depth! The boxes aren’t rotating much but the variations are great, again the 250 box challenge will help you with this.

Overall, you have done a good job. Don’t forget to use these exercises as a warm-up before drawing. It will improve your lines and perspective further.

    Next Steps:

Move onto the 250 Box challenge.

Use Lesson 1 exercises as a warm up (especially the superimposed lines exercise)

Hello! I’ll be doing your critique today.

    Superimposed lines

The lines are slightly wobbly but the curves are a lot more confident. Try to focus more on the straightness of your strokes during this stage.

    Ghosted lines

The lines look a lot better here! I’ve noticed that the lines made at an angle are more confident than the others, don’t be afraid to rotate the page as much as you need to.

Ghosted planes and Ellipses in planes

I’ll talk about the second page since you have improved a lot from the first, there is only slight overshooting or undershooting but it’s mostly all good!

    Table of Ellipses

The undershooting is less noticeable the further down do, and the accuracy is improving too, great job here!

    Funnels

You seem absolutely confident in your lines now!

Seems like you had some trouble with the ellipses on the right of the minor axis, that aside they’re all mostly the same shape so when you practice drawing ellipses when you have the time try to experiment with different angles.

    Plotted Perspective Boxes

You followed the instructions correctly. There’s no distortion. although no cross hatching either, but that’s alright.

    Rough Perspective Boxes

The lines are less confident again, then again, this exercise is pretty hard too. Don’t worry about the accuracy you’ll have plenty of time in the 250 box challenge to practise.

    Rotated Boxes

Despite being a difficult exercise, you understood it pretty well! The main issue I can see is that some of the boxes on the last row aren’t rotating and there are some areas that should have been cross-hatched for clarity (the top and bottom of most boxes), aside from that you managed to make the overall image mostly round, good job!

    Organic boxes

I see you understand the concept of depth, but a lot of the boxes have the same shape, and some of them aren’t following the line either.

Overall, you have done a great job and understand your mistakes, the only thing to work on are the boxes which is your next lesson too. And don’t forget to use these exercises as a small warm-up before drawing. It will improve your lines and perspective further.

    Next Steps:

Move on to 250 box challenge.

Use lesson 1 exercises as a warm-up before drawing.

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
