Hi! Good job on completing lesson 4. I will review your submission

Organic forms: Your organic forms are looking solid for the most part. There are some sausages where I feel that you could have changed the degree of the ellipses a little more, but the page looks good for the most part.

For the sausages with contour lines, I feel like you don't make the countour line "round" enough, if that makes sense. Sometimes the sausages seem flat, instead of having the thickness that we want to give to them on this exercise. Remember to imagine the sausage as a form that really exists in a 3d space.

Insect drawings: Your insect drawings are looking good. You did a good job with the legs. I can tell you focus on capturing the gesture each one of them. Your linework also looks good. Keep using your whole arm and drawing with confidence. Your construction looks good! I can tell you're understanding the lessons and building a good spatial reasoning.

The one think I want to point out is detail. For the bee, I notice that you filled in the whole eye with black. This can make the form lose some of its solidity. Uncomfortable goes more in depth about why you should avoid filling eyes with black (when doing DaB exercises) on lesson 5. Also, I feel like for the beetle (I think that's what it is), you drew too much shadow, and this can be a little distracting. Be more mindful of how much shadow you put.

Overall, I think you did pretty good. I like your construction, it looks very solid and I can tell you think about the lines you put down. Good luck with lesson 5. I wish you the best and I hope I helped you in some way.

    Next Steps:

    Move on to lesson 4.

Hi! Good job on completing lesson 1. I will review your submission

Superimposed lines: First of all, good job on starting the line at the same spot for each pass. I can tell from this that you understand the lesson and the instructions. The first thing I want to point out is that you seemed to struggle more with the longer lines. This will improve with practice, just make sure you are using your whole arm when you do this. Also, try your best to be confident, and don't hesitate.

Ghosted lines and ghosted planes: Good job on the ghosted lines page. Your lines are not showing much wobble, so make sure you keep using your whole arm. You do miss quite a few times, but this isn't such a big deal as you're starting out. As you keep practicing, you will improve. For the ellipses on the ghosted planes, you did a good job fitting the ellipses snuggly on the plane. The ellipses don't seem very consistent, some passes are larger than others. This will also improve with time, so make sure you do this exercise as warmup.

Table of ellipses: Again, I notice that you seem to struggle with the ellipses. The problem could be that you're hesitating, or you might be slowing down on the second and third pass for each ellipse. You could maybe try doing it a little faster. Remember to use your whole arm. Other than that, you did a good job fitting the ellipses on the grids.

Perspective and boxes exercises: There are some mistakes on the perspective exercises. You missed quite a few times on the one-point perspective exercise. Most people make many mistakes on this section, so don't worry too much about it. I do want to point out that for the rotated boxes page, your lines seem a little rough. Adding line-weight is good, but avoid overdoing it. Also, add line-weight the same way you would draw any other line, and use the ghosting method.

For the organic perspective page, your lines are diverging instead of converging towards a vanishing point. This will improve a lot when you do the 250 box challenge.

Overall, good job with the lesson. I advice you do warmups that include ellipses. I hope my critique has helped in some way. Good luck moving on with Drawabox.

    Next Steps:

Move on to 250 box challenge.

Make sure you do table of ellipses as warmups

Hi! Good job on completing lesson 1! I will be reviewing your submission.

Superimposed lines: You did a good job on this exercise. There is fraying at the end but this is not a big deal when you're just starting. If you do this exercise as warmup you will improve at it. Remember to keep using your whole arm and being confident. Also, good job at starting each line at the same spot.

Ghosted lines and ghosted planes: Your lines are looking pretty confident. I can tell you're following the instructions for the exercises. You miss on the trajectory a few times but as long as you keep doing what you're doing you will eventually improve in your accuracy. For the ghosted planes with eclipses on it, your ellipses are looking pretty good as well. Just remember to fit each ellipse snuggly on the plane.

Table of ellipses: Just like the ellipses on the ghosted planes, your ellipses are looking pretty clean for the most part. Also, good job on fitting the ellipses snuggly in the grids. I don't really have much to say about your ellipses page. It's pretty solid.

Boxes exercises: The mistakes you did on these exercises are pretty much the same as most people do when they reach this part of the lesson, so don't worry too much about it. As you go on with DaB and the 250 box challenge, you will get better at getting the lines of the boxes go to each vanishing point. The main mistake you did on the organic perspective challenge was that the lines are diverging instead of converging towards a vanishing point. You will improve on this a lot when you do the 250 box challenge.

Overall, this is a really solid submission. I can tell you're reading, understanding, and following each lesson correctly. Keep at it! I wish you the best on future lessons.

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 box challenge.

Hi! I'll be reviewing your submission!

Arrows: Pretty solid page. You're doing a good job compressing the space between the turns as the arrow moves further away. The first thing I will point out is that the change in the width of the arrows is a little inconsistent at times. This could be because you either a) lose control of your line b) don't plan the line beforehand. So make sure you are using your whole arm, and prepare for the line that you're gonna put down. Also, be more mindfull of how you draw your arrowheads. Imagine there's a third line flowing between the two lines of the arrow. I like to imagine this line and place the tip of the arrowhead accordingly.

Leaves: This is a pretty good attempt. The flow of the leaves is pretty smooth and convincing. You didn't add much detail but I think what you did add was good enough. Also, good job on the multiple leaves. It would have been nice if you had added more leaves with more extreme twists and turns. Don't be afraid to experiment and try bold things. Make sure you do this excercise as warmup every now and then and try different twists and turns.

Branches: Also a pretty solid page. You missed every now and then when connecting the ellipses, but everyone does with this excercise. It's pretty challenging. But good job changing the degree of the ellipses, and with the smooth lines. I don't have much to correct here, just keep practicing this excercise every now and then and you will get better at connecting the ellipses.

Plants: Your construction is looking solid. I can tell you're getting a solid grasp on construction and developing a nice spatial reasoning. The majority of your leaves look pretty smooth and flow quite nicely.

I will point out that for this flower you could have slowed down a little and added an ellipse to guide where the petals are going to be placed. The length of the petals seems inconsistent, so be more mindful of that. Also, the shadows on the hubiscus flower look a little odd. I assume you tried adding the shadow exactly as it looked in the reference? Be more mindful when you draw cast shadows. Sometimes too much shadow can be really distracting.

Other than that, your construction looks good! Keep practicing and make sure you do your warmups. Congrats on completing the lesson! I hope I could help you somehow and I wish you the best on your journey.

    Next Steps:

    Move on to lesson 5

    Practice leaves and branches occasionally

Looks good! Like I said, I really like the way you construct the heads. Keep at it, remember to look at your reference and add masses where necessary.

*Edit: I typed in "move on to lesson 4" instead of lesson 6. I meant lesson 6 obviously

Hi! Good job on completing lesson 5! I will review your submission.

Organic Intersections: I will start by pointing out that your sausages are overall decent. The majority of them seem pretty solid. However, I think you went a little wild with this excercise. The porpuse of it is to really imagine a 3D space where you're placing sausages on top of another and capturing the relations they would have with each other. With the way you did this excercise, the illusion of a 3-D space gets lost. It almost seems like abstract art haha, but I really can't make sense of the relationships this masses have with each other. Like I said, your sausages are decent, but it would have been good if you tried different positions for them, instead of following a pattern. Also, try not stacking to many of them, because, like I said, it breaks the illusion of real forms that are affected by physics.

Animal Drawings: Your animal drawings are pretty good. This is a pretty solid submission. Your lines look really confident for the most part, especially for the cobra and the fish. Good job on that, keep using your whole arm, ghosting your lines, and drawing with confidence. Your construction is also pretty solid, but I do notice that sometimes you leave out a couple of lines, especially when you're drawing the heads of certain animals, like the horse. I think you might be doing it for convenience, but for Drawabox, try making your construction as solid as possible. Another thing I want to point out is that for the majority of the animals you skipped the part where you add masses to the legs. Although the majority of your construction looks pretty good, the lack of masses on some of the legs can look a little awkward. I also notice this issue with the torso of the animals. You barely added masses to them, which makes the torsos look like just a sausage.

Honestly, your construction is pretty good. You are getting a pretty solid grasp of 3-D space, and you really give life to the animals with the way you construct their heads. I would just mark the lesson as complete, I personally think you need to do at least one more animal drawing where you add more masses, especially to the legs and the torso.

    Next Steps:

    One more animal drawing.

Remember to add more mass to the legs and the torso. Don't make them look like just sausages.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi! I'll be reviewing your submission. Good job on completing lesson 3.

Arrows: Your lines look confident for the majority of your arrows. Keep using your whole arm and drawing with confidence. There is something I want to point out. I can see that you're struggling a little changing the width of the arrow as it travels trough space. I notice that the changes in width tend to be very drastic in your arrows. However, it needs to be more natural. Another thing I notice is that you don't compress the space as the arrow travels trough space. Take a look at this picture. You also need to be more mindfull of your arrowhead, and be intentional with it just as you did with the arrow.

Leaves: You seem to be grasping how to draw leaves, good job on that. I think it would have been good if had drawn a bigger variety of leaves. Maybe some bigger leaves, some with spiky edges, long ones, etc. It seems like you played it pretty safe. Also, while detail isn't the most important thing, you should be more mindfull of how you capture it in your drawings. Remember, you're drawing cast shadows.

Branches: Pretty good attempt. This excercise can be pretty hard, so don't worry too much about it. I can see that you're not missing too much when connecting the branches. Good job on that! Just remember to keep your lines confident, and improve wobliness. Your branches are on the right path to looking pretty solid. You also did a good job changing the degree of the ellipses and aligning them to their minor axis. There is one branch that you seemed to mess up. Just slow down and be more careful as you place the ellipses.

Plant drawings: The construction on your plants is looking pretty solid. Good job on that, I can see you're understanding the concepts of this lesson. The first thing I want to point out is that your leaves need a little of work. You don't seem to be enclosing them properly, and some of them look a little stiff. Keep this in mind as you draw arrows. I can see that on the bonsai tree, you didn't pay much attention to the construction of the branches. Don't rush, drawing solid branches is important for the solidity of the whole drawing.

Overall, I think you're going in the right direction, but I feel like you could get a better grasp on drawing leaves. I'm gonna ask you draw another page of leaves. Make sure you read the instructions again, you enclose the leaves properly, they flow nicely through space, and you go for a bigger variety of leaves. Other than that, your submission is pretty solid. I also suggest you do the arrows excercise as warmup, and you pay attention to the aspects that need improvement.

    Next Steps:

One additional page of leave drawings.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi. Good job on completing the lesson. I'll review your submission.

Arrows: Pretty good attempt. It would have been good if you'd compressed the space a little more like in this picture. Your lines have a little of wobble, but not so much that it affects the solidity too badly. You did a good job changing the width of the arrows as they travel trough space. I will point out, that you should put more care into your arrowheads. A sloppy arrowhead can affect the illusion of an arrow traveling trough space. Overall, pretty solid page of arrows.

Leaves: There are a few things I want to point out from your page of leaves. First of all, You need to be more carefull and intentional with your detail. For one of the leaves, the detail goes outside of the constructed leaf. Also, remember that you are drawing the cast shadows. Another thing I want to point out is that you didn't draw many leaves that twist and turn. It's important that you practice this, so when you do this excercise as warmup, draw some leaves that twist and turn.

Branches: This is also a pretty good page. I can see you missed quite a few times while connecting the branch. This excercise can be hard, so don't worry too much about it. What's important is that you understood how to do this excercise. Remember to keep using your whole arm, and keep ghosting your lines. Another thing you did well was aligning the ellipses to their minor axis. Keep doing excercises like Superimposed lines and Ghosted plane excercises to improve your lines and get better at this excercise.

Plant drawings: Your construction is looking pretty solid. I can tell you're understanding the demos pretty well. The first thing I want to point out is that sometimes it seems like you're scribbling randomly when drawing detail. Avoid this, look carefully at your reference, and slow down. For your first plant drawing, it seems like you were going to draw detail but stopped and just left it like that. The detail that you put on your leaves seem to have no purpose. Once again, slow down, be intentional with the marks that you're putting down, and keep looking back at reference. Other than that, your branches look pretty solid, and the majority of your leaves look good. For some of the leaves, it seems like the construction contradicts the intial flow line you put down.

Overall, this is pretty solid submission. I think you can move on to lesson 4. The main things I think you should work a little bit on is your leaves. Make sure you add the arrows excercise and the leaves excercise to your warmups. Also, remember to me more mindfull of how you draw detail.

    Next Steps:

    Move on to lesson 4

Add arrows and leaves to warmups.
