thanks for the well researched response!

i'm not that much of a beginner anymore though i've only started taking my drawing seriously about 3 months ago, i'll still take a look at different courses, of course.

would you recommend finishing drawabox first before moving on to different courses or should i go ahead and study human anatomy as well alongside drawabox?

thanks a lot for your real and serious response.

you have a good point and i guess i'll definitely try it out though i really wouldn't know which other (free) course has the same structure and long term development as DrawaBox.

i'll definitely still look into it though.

do you know of any alternate resources ?

it looks a lot better, try to incorporate it into your warm ups andyou'll definitely see it pay off, i'm going to mark it as complete, keep going!

    Next Steps:

you can move onto the 2 50 box exercise!

    That extra page looked great!

I could really see the perspective and the foreshortening was realistic.

You can definitely move on to the 250 box challenge, good luck with it!

i congratulate you with finishing the homework of the first lesson, may there be many more!

first tidbit: please don't draw exercise B on a page where you've started exercise A, also: try to keep the doodling on the homework pages to a minimum and try not to make up an exercise to fill the page, try to really focus on the exercise that is requested of you.

i put this at the top because you repeat these mistakes a few times and it makes it harder for the people trying to critique you.

    superimposed lines

it looks good, it looks sharp and i can clearly see you've ghosted them and then drew them with confidence.

as with any beginner that i've critiqued i recommend you incorporate this exercise into your warmup.

    ghosted lines

most lines look like they've been drawn with confidence and some lines look like you've rushed them or didn't take the time to ghost the amount that you need before you can make a mark.

i recommend you find out which of the problems you are facing and then focus on that during warmups.

    table of ellipses

overal the exercise is done fairly well though a few pointers:

you are very erratic in how much you superimpose lines, for some ellipses you do it 5-7 times for some you don't do it and for some you do it the right amount (3).

for some ellipses it also looks like you've not ghosted them, either you haven't or you haven't ghosted enough.

you should try to incorporate this into your warm up.

    ghosted planes

the lines look like they've been drawn with confidence and they look good however:

try to fit more planes in the page so they fit snugly together, you've left huge gaps and that just means you haven't utilised the page fully.

    tables of ellipses

most lines look good and they've been drawn with confidence though some fall out of the plane and some don't fit snugly in their box, this problem is most often caused by not ghosting enough, also really try to superimpose the lines 3 times before moving on to the next ellipse.

    ellipses in funnels

your funnels are too large and because of that you haven't utilised the page fully,

also because you made your funnels too large a lot of ellipses fall short of reaching the funnel,

to make up for this lack of space you've drawn rectangles and drawn ellipses inside that, it might be a good exercise to do during warmup but it isn't what is asked for in this exercise.

    plotted perspective

lines are drawn clean and the perspective works, i have no real critique of this exercise.

    rough perspective

try to refrain from drawin X's through work that you messed up, you yourself need to see where your fault lies and try to learn from it, all too often when you mark through something it means that you'd rather forget about it.

but the point of these exercises is to look and remember where your faults lay so you don't run into the same problems in the future.

the exercise itself though looks fine and don't worry, the problems you have while making this exercise will be resolved in the 250 box challenge.

    rotated boxes

your rotated boxes form more of a rectangle than a circle but it looks good, lines are drawn with confidence and the perspective works.

    organic perspective

try not to chickenscratch when you do these exercises, try to (still ghost) and draw the mark at once, also try not to go over each line multiple times for exercises like these.

the boxes are pretty well constructed and you can clearly see the perspective.

if you disagree with my critique i'd love to hear it.

    Next Steps:

please draw 2 more pages of ellipses in funnels and try to:

    1. draw them snugly

    2. try to make the funnels smaller

    3. try not to stray away from the funnel exercises.

    superimposed lines

your superimposed lines look very frayed but you've superimposed them the correct number of time and given each line the space it needs to be correctly assessed.

i recommend you incorporate this into your warmup for the 250 box challenge, the fraying should improve over time, do though take enough time ghosting each line before you draw it, that might be were your issue lies since some lines look rushed.

    ghosted lines

your lines have a slight wobble to them but they were drawn with confidence and i can clearly see that you've ghosted them, the wobble, like many things, will improve over time as you do the 250 box challenge and during the warm up of the next few lessons.

i recommend you to incorporate this into a warm up though if i give you extra work it won't automatically improve over the extra page that would be assigned, therefore i'm not assigning you an extra page.

    ghosted planes

you've only done 1 page of ghosted planes, i also noticed that you didn't finish the rotated boxes, the rough perspective, the organic perspective. i suggest you first finish your homework before posting it to be critiqued!

    Next Steps:

do the rest of the homework.

yeah i'm obsessed with drawing lol,

thanks for your feedback, if you want we can exchange some sort of contact details so we can critique each other more often.

the 250 boxes took me forever too!

i actually really liked the boxes since it is so repetitive, lesson 2 is something completely different and i disliked lesson 2 more than the boxes, things really get going after lesson 2 because then you move on from drawing exercises to drawing constructional studies of plants insects and arachnids.

i wish you a lot of good luck!

    super imposed lines:

it looks like you rushed it a little, the lines fray a lot in the center and it looks like you've not ghosted them often enough for you to incorporate it with your muscle memory.

they look good though, you've gone over them the correct amount and left enough space for your curved lines which to me seem like they have the same problem of not ghosting enough before putting down your mark.

    ghosted lines

it looks good, it wobbles a little at the start of center, this is not something you can fix now but i recommend you put it in your warm up. The problem should resolve itself over time.

    ghosted planes

most lines appear confident though some are really lacking, don't be afraid to follow through your lines to the end and also try to makes the spaces between the planes smaller, so you can have more planes on a single page, overall they look good though.

    table of ellipses

with some ellipses you went over them too often, try to stick to the instructions of superimposing it ~3 times.

the lines overall look confident and decent.

the second page of the table of ellipses you made boxes that house larger ellipses, try to only use flowy lines, a hard break that a box gives you will make it look sloppy once you try to fill the surrounding area with ellipses.

i suggest incorporating ellipses into your warmup.

    ellipses in planes

some ellipses aren't superimposed often enough and some are superimposed too often, really try to limit your superimposing lines to what the exercise says, overall though i don't have a lot to say about these ellipses, they look clean and the problems you have now will just be resolved once you incorporate ellipses into your warmup.

    funnels

again, try to superimpose as much as the exercise says, you superimpose in this exercise between 2 and 5 times, try to stick to 3.

for the rest: some ellipses in the funnels aren't aligned to the minor axis, it's not bad enough for you to do the exercise again but try to keep an eye on that with your future warm ups.

    plotted perspective

lines look consistently good, try to keep in mind to shade on 1 universal plane not different planes varying on each box.

    rough perspective

    lines look confident and neat,

the boxes themselves aren't neat but trust me, that will improve a lot during and after the 250 box exercise, don't worry too much about that rn.

    rotated boxes

try to shade between the boxes to give you a better definition and so it looks cleaner.

the lines and boxes look neat though, no further comments.

    organic perspective

looks good, sometimes you mess up by having irregular foreshortening.

the lines look clean the boxes are well constructed though if you were to ever try the exercise again i recommend drawing more, smaller boxes so you can easily see where you mess up foreshortening.

    Next Steps:

i request you do another page of organice perspective, try to draw more boxes so your foreshortening is more noticeable.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

you should do drawabox homework with pen and paper, but if you really want to get good at drawing with a tablet you can do the homework twice, once in regular paper and one digitally, it's what i've been doing and that works pretty well.

i don't think your homework will be reviewed if it is in digital as opposed to paper.

i hope these are better, i still made the mistake of turning my ellipses when corners get tight, i can draw them from my elbow but i can't draw small from my shoulder, is this something that after practice will improve or is the elbow style of drawing just inherently bad at drawing small things?

i had major improvement with the lines but i'll have to implement the ellipses into my warm up.

i'm already done with the 250 boxes, should i upload those today or is there a limit on how often i can upload homework?

also: i really like your critique, it was as if uncomfy himself critiqued my work, thanks for that.

    have a good day

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
