Hi there, congrats on making it through Lesson 2!

I will be reviewing your homework today so let's get this started!

Your arrows look good! Lines are confident and smooth. Sometimes your arrows seem to be bigger in the middle than towards the end. Remember to make one end of the arrow broader and the other end more narrow to help sell the idea of an arrow moving away or towards us.

Lines on the Organic Forms look good as well, as do the ellipses. I think you have a good feel for these two at this point. However please remember we're going for a sausage shape. A tube with a sphere on each end. That means no pinching in the middle, no bloating on one size and no elongated forms. See here: https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/5/simplesausage

Please take another good look on the 'None of these' part since you included some of them.

Texture Analysis looks very good overall. Staying away from simple lines and drawing cast shadows only. Keep in mind that the black bar at the side shouldn't be visible in the end since we're going for a smooth gradient. You did improve it in your last study so I think it just takes time with learning, so you're all good!

For the Dissections I'm not really sure what happened but for some reason you went back to lines. Yes, sometimes we have very thin cast shadows but in cases like these you can try this method: https://i.imgur.com/M9JJfr4.png

Try to observe your reference before placing your marks, try to catch as much as you can even if it means looking over the reference three or four times if not more in one go. It takes time, but your study will improve a lot with a little patience!

Form Intersections are looking good! No complains here, just keep in mind that you can definitely go over the lines where you mark the intersections but you ghost those lines and then place a line once. So no 5 lines in one place, please. In addition, when constructing cylinders, please go with the method described here: https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/8/step3

Organic Intersections are looking really good! Just try to follow the forms of the underlying shapes with the shadows a bit more, in some places they seem a bit off.

So this is it! I think you've done a good job mostly, there's a bit of revision I'd like to ask from you though, since this will be of major importance in the next Lessons.

Please do two more Pages of the Organic Forms. You can choose whether you want to the the Ellipses or Curves.

That's it! Again congrats on making it through Lesson 2 and I hope I'll hear from you soon!

Hello and congrats on making it through Lesson 2!

I think you're doing a very good job overall. I did notice some lines being a bit wobbly as you mentioned but I think this isn't anything to worry about! Of course keep doing your warm ups, but you're on a good path!

Organic Forms look good! You seem to understand how the ellipses turn well.

The Texture Analysis looks good as well. Just a tip on the side, for the second analysis (volcanic rock) you seemed to have studied only the lighter parts of the texture. It might be helpful to draw out a corner for a shadow part. Your studies are good though, so this is more like an extra tip.

I don't think I have any kind of complaints about the rest either. Your forms and studies look good and you're making sure to draw cast shadows instead of form shadows or lines. The intersections work well too.

So good job! You can go onto the next Lesson ?

Hey hey, I will be looking over your homework today! Congrats on making it through the first lesson ~

All in all I think you did a good job. It seems like you understood the assignments at the core. Your lines still wobble a bit but you will learn to control them the more often you do it. For the Superimposed Lines, be careful not to let them fray too much. In addition, the assignment states to draw one line with a ruler first and then add your lines freehand. I feel like you skipped that part over all and went straight to drawing the lines freehand. Don't skip that part, it helps you to get your line from point A to point B.

In this assignment your lines tend to arch a lot as well, but I think this is also something you'll learn to improve over time.

Your ellipses look good overall. Sometimes they stray, just keep in mind to ghost as many times as you need before placing your line. For the table of ellipses I noticed your ellipses tend to overlap or not quiet reach each other. Don't forget that the ellipses are supposed to sit snugly next to each other!

Most of this is just something you have to continue practising so I wouldn't worry much. You'll get to it! Before heading to the 250 Box Challenge, I'd like to ask from you to do one page of the Superimposed Lines and one of the Table of Ellipses.

Good work overall and again congrats on making it through the first lesson!

Heya, thank you so much for your review!

I'll definitely keep in mind the intersection part. I did notice while drawing that something's off but didn't quite understand what, so thank you for clearing that up! Same goes for the sausage forms, I'll try to get a better grip on them.

    Thank you again!

    Welcome back!

Wow, I can already see the improvement! My arrows were quiet slanted when I started out as well so I'm happy you're improving so well! The organic intersections look great as well, it feels a lot more solid and grounded now.

Can't complain. I'd say you're ready for Lesson 3 now. Good luck and have fun! :D

Hi Harry! I will be reviewing your homework today. Congrats on making it through Lesson 2 and especially for making it through the troubling parts! Let's go over everything ~

    Arrows

Your lines are smooth and confident. The arrows start from being small and growing towards the arrowhead. I also noticed you stuck with your placed lines and didn't attempt to draw over or erase any mistakes. All perfect!

Here I noticed only little things. For example your arrows tend to grow larger around the middle part and smaller towards the front. If you have trouble keeping the lines consistent you might need to ghost over them a couple times more. Letting the arrow grow steady over time helps the viewer identify as an arrow coming clouser through space. Like this it seems like it grows in the middle instead of coming closer.

Additionally, they seem a bit slanted at times. A mistake I used to do a lot as well. Again, with more ghosting this is easy to fix, good job!

    Organic Forms

You stuck to your sausage forms without changing anything about your lines. The ellipses are drawn through and follow the curvature of the form as do the contour lines, which are hooked nicely. I'd say you nailed most of the assignment!

Be a bit careful with your forms though. Remember the sausage forms are to equally large spheres connected by a tube. Your forms sometimes pinch in the middle or grow outwards. Sometimes they strecht at the ends. Here's a tip by Uncomfortable on this issue: https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/5/simplesausage

Even though your ellipses are drawn through nicely, I noticed you like to draw through them around 3 times. It's fine normally but here they seem off at times. I don't think it's much of a major issue but if you'd like to you can experiment a bit more with drawing through 2 times maximum.

Other than that you did a great job here.

    Textures

You kept to your cast shadows you noted down in your notes box and even though you did add lines, which isn't supposed to happen, they aren't too much here.

Still, here's a helpful tip by Uncomfortable again on how to combat simple lines in your shadows: https://i.imgur.com/M9JJfr4.png

Same goes for the gradient. The black bar on the left side is supposed to be not noticeable. You shouldn't be able to identify the bar to create a seamless gradient. https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/7d1f3467.jpg

It may take some time to really understand the texture and draw it all out but it definitely pays in the end!

    Dissections

Sometimes you seem to forget to wrap the textures but I only saw the in a few examples. Mostly the texture wraps around the form nicely and you break the silhouette of the sausage form, making it all look much more real.

You doubled down on your lines though. Remember we're not drawing out any single forms of the texture but the cast shadows only. Lines should be barely existent if at all! If you have trouble doing cast shadows feel free to look at other student's completed homeworks or check out Uncomfortable's video on this assignment (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kv1-uNGsh8&ab_channel=Uncomfortable) as well the one he did for the Texture Analysis assignment (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7vfYsrL768&ab_channel=Uncomfortable). I've watched that one several times myself. Texture analysis is hard...

    Form Intersections

All forms exist in the same space, interacting with each other. As well you used all the forms available, making them interact with each other. Your lines are smooth and confident. The thing with the ellipses I mentioned earlier applies here as well. Feel free to experiment with those a bit more!

    Organic Intersections

Continued smooth and confident lines. This time you stuck to your cast shadows nicely and you added appropriate line weight.

Sometimes your forms seem to float a bit. You can try and make them flop a bit more but that's really the next step, I think. In addition your cast shadow sometimes miss following the form of the sausage they're falling onto. Definitely keep a closer eye on that one!

Overall I think you got the most important things. I'd still like you to do a bit of revisions before moving on onto Lesson 3.

Hey there! I will be reviewing your homework today. Congrats on making it through Lesson 2 and let's go!

    Arrows

You tried out a bunch of forms and showcased the perspective well. The end is smaller, growing bigger towards the arrowhead. Good job! Your lines tend to wobble in most of your arrows. In addition I noticed you tried repeating or drawing over mistakes here and there. Remember to always ghost your lines before drawing them in one confident stroke. No wobbling or lifting the pen of the paper before you reached the end of the line!

    Organic Forms

Same goes here for the lines. If you feel like the sausage form is to difficult to execute, you can either ghost it as well or place dots where it's supposed to go, ghost those and then place the line.

Your ellipses have a nice degree and angle. I might be wrong but it seems to me that you drew over them more than three times. 2 times would be best, three is the maximum.

I can definitely see the hooks in the forms with contour lines. I think you can go a little bit further still with those to make sure you really drive the point home!

Your forms go into the right directions. Due to the sometimes wobbly lines the forms seem to look a bit pinched, bloated or stretched though. Remember it's a simple sausage form. Two spheres, connected by a tube!

    https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/5/simplesausage

    Texture

As far as I can see you definitely concentrated on the cast shadows. You can try and go into more detail the next time around. I think that might really help you out understand the texture of the object you're looking at. The gradient on the second one turned out really good. Keep looking at that one for reference in the next lessons! For the other two you can see the black bar on the left side clearly, which is not supposed to be. It's a learning process but I'm sure you're on the right path!

    Dissections

You wrapped the textures around the forms nicely. In addition you broke the silhouette, making the whole thing look much neater, it looks great! I don't know what happened on the first page but it seems you completely forgot to draw in cast shadows only, and instead only drew lines, which is the opposite of what you were supposed to do. You picked it back up on the second page though. Your cast shadows still seem a bit lined but it's way better than the first page. Just to be sure I'll link this tip by Uncomfortable anyway: https://i.imgur.com/M9JJfr4.png

    Form Intersections

All the forms seem to be in the same space, intersecting with each other, which was the most important part of the assignment. So I think you got the most important thing.

There are a few minor things needing to be addressed still. Nothing big though.

For cylinders, you should first draw the minor axis, and then draw the first ellipse, while making sure the minor axis divides the upper and lower part evenly. Here's another tip by Uncomfortable: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/a24c7c51.jpg

I noticed you didn't add any pyramids. While it's not a must, it will help you understand different forms in the 3 Dimensional space if you do include them from time to time.

    Organic Intersections

You got a good amount of shapes interacting with each other here. You drew through all of them and over the course of the exercise I think they grew to feel more solid and in space. You're doing good work on the shadows as well. Be aware of floating shapes though. These forms sit in 3D space and are heavy, at no point are they light or stiff enough to be able to float in the air. Even though your shadows definitely go into the right directions, sometimes you seem to forget to add them or they're falling onto a shape wrong. Remember they're cast shadows, following the forms they're falling onto.

In addition, don't be afraid to draw larger shapes on the 'floor'. As long as you have a connected shape, there won't be a single dot as shadow on the floor. Feel free to check other student's completed homework for reference!

Even though there were mistakes and issues here and there, I think you did a good job overall. Mistakes are bound to happen so don't worry too much about those. Double down on them to make sure you understand the intentions behind the assignments.

To make sure you really get what this lesson is about I'm gonna add a bit of revisions. Make sure to go through them and answer with them to this post when you've completed them. Good luck, have fun!

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
