Hi, I will be looking over your homework today ^^ Congrats on making it through the second Lesson!

I'll point out what you did well first before mentioning where I think you can improve in. If you have any questions after this, feel free to ask me!

Arrows Your arrows are drawn with fluid and confident lines. You seem to understand how they flow through space and wrap, twist and turn in it quite well. They also fluently move away or towards the viewer, giving the perception of 3D space. I only noticed a minor thing. You seem to go over your lines several times in your arrows. We avoid that, since it tends or risks making your lines wobbly. Only give it another pass on the sections where you have to emphasize which line is above which, for example in places where the arrow twists and has several lines over one another. There's no need to mark the entirety of the arrow. This part explains it well: https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/4/step4

Organic Forms You've drawn your lines confidently and your sausage forms turned out well. Good job on drawing through the ellipses twice and making them turn in space. I don't think there's anything else I can point out here.

Texture You seem to understand Texture really well. Most students tend to have a lot of trouble with this assignment or rush it. You're sticking to the cast shadows and the gradient flows very smoothly from dark to light. Good job :> There's nothing to complain about on the dissection part either, you've done really well!

Intersection Intersections are quite hard, but I think you handled them really well. All of the objects are drawn as if they are in the same space with none of them seeming as if they float far away or close to the viewer, good job! Your lines are looking great as well. Only thing I want to mention is for the cylinders and cones. In theory, what you did isn't wrong, I just noticed the lines you used made it hard to understand what I'm looking at and where the actual form ends and begins. You can make another pass over the outlines of the form (Ghosting again and placing one confident line) to make the forms more readable or you look over this part again: https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/4/step4 Most students tend to mark in just the ellipse. I know you've done it in some, I just thought it'd be worth mentioning.

For the organic intersections there isn't really much to complain about either. The forms look really floppy and in 3D space. The cast shadows follow the forms of the sausages the fall on. You can try experimenting with different sizes of sausages if you choose to include this in your warm-ups!

That's it from me! I hope my advice can help you a bit and I'm wishing you all the best in the next Lesson!

Hey there, I will be looking over your homework today ^^ The first step is always the hardest so good job on making it through the first Lesson :> If there's anything you don't understand feel free to ask me!

I'll be pointing out what you did well first, before diving into where I think you have room for improvement.

Lines You do well on placing your Lines starting at Point A and ending at Point B. Some fraying is totally normal, especially when you're still learning. The only thing I noticed is that you tend to arch a lot, especially the longer the lines get. This is absolutely normal and at this point totally okay, but I think I should point it out still just so you can try to keep an eye on it. To improve this you can check yourself whether you're drawing from your shoulder and rotating the paper as you need to comfortably place the line. But as I said, it's not a huge factor :> In addition, I can see them improving a lot in the Ghosted Planes exercise. They look really good!

Ellipses Good job on staying within the bounds and drawing through each ellipse two times! Your ellipses look really wobbly, though and I could see in your notes that you ghosted slowly. It's good to try out different methods but I believe, and it's visible in your work, too, that your hand won't memorize the stroke if you follow it slowly. Remember, we're going for confidence in line over accuracy. The second draw through may not be close to the first line but it will still look better, due to the confidence in it.

You will maybe agree, since your ellipses in the planes look much more confident and smooth. Keep on doing what you did there.

Another thing I noticed in the Table of Ellipses that you seemingly actively tried to stay away from the boundaries given. This would be wrong, because the essence of this assignment is to touch those boundaries.

Boxes This assignment is mostly there to introduce you a bit to perspective and the following 250 Box Challenge. The most important part are still the lines, though and overall I think you did well. In the Organic Perspective exercise I can see you drawing over the lines several times. I know Boxes can be frustrating, especially starting out, but please do not do that. It won't help in finding the 'actual' mark and will only worsen what you had already done. Place one confident line and stick to it throughout the box.

I'm guessing you became frustrated with the boxes not turning out like you want them to, but don't worry about it too much. This is just the first Lesson and you will have much chance to work on them during the 250 Box Challenge.

Before you continue I would like to ask from you to do another Page of the Table of Ellipses to really get down that confidence. Remember, confidence over accuracy. Try to reach the boundaries of the boxes, not shying away from it. Even if we try to avoid it, it's okay if there's some going over the bounds, we're learning after all! And we won't learn if we don't have the courage to get to those boundaries.

In addition, I noticed you haven't submitted the Rotated Boxes sheet. I don't know whether you simply forgot and wanted to avoid boxes after being frustrated with them but I can't mark this lesson as complete without it. As I said, nobody expects you to do it 'right' and you're bound to make mistakes. But this is all part of learning so don't be afraid of making those mistakes.

In general I think you're on a good path. There's not much holding you back from going to the next assignment. Don't forget to answer to this with the requested revisions so I can look over them and send you off!

    Next Steps:

1 Page of Tables of Ellipses (get those confident lines!)

    1 Page of Rotated Boxes

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Heyo heyo, I will be looking over your homework today ^^ Congrats on making it through the second Lesson!

I will be commenting on what you have done well first, before going onto where I think you have room for improvement! If there's anything you don't understand feel free to ask away :>

Arrows Your arrows look confident and smooth. Good job on keeping it in one consistent line. I think you have a rather good grasp now on how they twist and turn in space. Just keep an eye out on the width of the arrows as they move away from the viewer. If they get smaller too quickly or vary in their size, it might look like the actual arrow is getting more narrow, not moving away from the viewer.

Organic Forms Your forms look really good on the first page. Good job on the ellipses too, going through them two times and staying within the bounds given. I noticed on your second page that your forms started to be more elongated. This is wrong and I have to point it out because they will be important later down the line. This image by Uncomfortable might help you a bit: https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/5/simplesausage I don't think it's a big issue, since you did it right on the first page so just keep an eye out for next time!

Texture Texture Analysis is really hard and takes a huge amount of time so good job on getting through it! You kept with the cast shadows and most of the time presented them in forms. Sometimes shadows are so tiny that they're barely a line but still, try to give them some shape. I think you improved down the line but remember that we're drawing shapes, not lines. You can look at this for help: https://i.imgur.com/M9JJfr4.png Also this part of Uncomfortable's explanation https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/6/notransition I mean just the image in this case. This is an example of how you could do scales, as opposed to what you have for the armadillo texture for example.

Texture is definitely hard and takes a lot of time, so be a bit patient with it the next time around ^^

Intersections Your intersections look really good. Your forms look like they're in the same space and your lines are smooth and confident. In the Oranic Intersections the shapes feel really solid and floppy and the cast shadows adhere to the forms beneath each sausage. I don't think there's anything I can complain about, good job!

So this would be it from me. Just keep an eye out on the things I pointed out and you should be good to go in the future as well! You can head onto Lesson 3 now, good luck and have fun!

Hey there! I will be looking over your homework today ^^ Congrats on making it through the second Lesson.

I will be mentioning what I think you did well first, before heading over to where I think you can improve!

I also noticed that English isn't your first Language, since your Texture Assignment is written in Spanish, I believe. If there's anything you don't understand feel free to ask away and I'll do my best to answer more simple :>

Arrows Your arrows are very smooth and flow nicely through space. I think in general you understand how the planes of each side twist and turn. Only thing I want to mention is to keep an eye on how the arrow slowly gets smaller the further it goes into the distance. Remember to make it smaller gradually, so it looks like distance and not the actual arrow getting smaller.

Organic Forms Your sausage forms look good in general. The ellipses and contour lines are fitting as well. It's good you're drawing through all of your ellipses two times and stick to the boundaries given by the sausage form. They also turn in space, good job! I noticed some of your sausages tend to diverge from the intended form. Remember that we're drawing a tube, connected by two spheres, basically. So there shouldn't be any widening in the middle or long ends. You can see what I mean in Uncomfortable's post here as well: https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/5/simplesausage

Texture I think you did really well on this assignment. You stick to the cast shadows and with drawing forms rather than lines. That's really perfect! I don't think I have anything more to say here. The gradient you drew looks really well, too, going from dark to light smoothly. This is a difficult assignment, both in the Analysis and the Dissection so good job!! You can pat yourself on the back definitely.

Construction Your Form Intersections look good. The most important part is to make all the forms look like they are in the same space, which you achieved! Your lines look smooth and confident as well. I can see a bit of arching and wobbling there, so remember to ghost each line properly before drawing it. About the actual intersection part, I admit I have a lot of difficulties with it as well. It's not too important at this point in the course so don't worry about it too much. If you're curious about it, I found a First Aid Kit on the Draw A Box Discord Server. https://imgur.com/a/6Inx5Bz I think you did well, though :>

For the Organic Intersection the sausages in itself look good. They interact well and you can feel the weight of them. However, your cast shadows seem to follow the original shape, instead of following the shape they're falling onto. To illustrate and explain a bit better, I drew over one of your assignments a bit: https://imgur.com/a/5tAibKv I hope it helps!

So this is it with the actual feedback. Now, I checked out your profile and noticed that you have already done and submitted the homework for Lesson 3 and 4 as well. This isn't really the intention of Draw a Box. It is best advised to do complete one Lesson and wait till you receive feedback. Now, I know that it can take ages till someone answers and you want to continue and learn more. I'm not any different there. That's why I thought I'd mention that there's a Draw a Box Discord Server. If you haven't gotten a reply to your homework yet, you can go to the respective channel and after writing 5 Reviews yourself (like I'm doing now) you can ask to put on the list and someone will definitely come around and comment.

It's essential to receive your feedback because you will not know where to improve on and what to keep an eye on moving forward. Draw a Box builds on itself and continuing with the course without having a solid grasp of the taught foundation yet, won't be helpful at all.

In addition, I'm not sure whether you just didn't post it or haven't done it at all, but Lesson 1, however simple it may be, is still an important part of the course and I advise to do it, too.

I hope my feedback was helpful to you and that you can understand it well. If you have any questions please do answer here and I'll do my best to answer them.

Before you continue I'd like you to do another page of the Organic Intersections, though. Keep in mind the cast shadows! Don't forget to answer to this with another link to your revision ^^

    Wishing you the best!!

    Next Steps:

Hey ^^ I will be looking over your homework today. I hope it still deems helpful, even though it has been half a month for you.

First of all though, congrats on making it through the first Lesson! This is a feat in itself, since the first step is usually the hardest haha. I will be pointing out what I saw you did good first, before continuing with what I think you can improve on. By the end you will either be able to go on to the 250 Box Challenge or do some revisions.

Lines Your lines cohesively start on the dot you have marked for them. Mostly they're also confident and smooth. However, the meat of the lesson is to ghost your lines before placing them, making them go from Point A to Point B smoothly. Some fraying at one end is totally okay, but I don't have the impression you have ghosted enough times aiming for your Point B. This is the most important part of the Lesson.

For the Ghosted Lines I definitely see improvement though. Some of the lines are very straight-forward and confident. There's still some arching but that's fine. Definitely keep ghosting before placing the mark. If you're not sure how your homework should look like, you can look at completed homeworks by other students or look at Uncomfortable's example. (https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/9/example)

Ellipses Your Ellipses look smooth and confident. Sometimes the second go over seems very far apart, so again, take your time ghosting and then place the line. In the Table of Ellipses it actually looks like you became impatient, making the lines sloppy and improper. If you become impatient, rather take a break, than let your homework suffer. Remember that in the Table of Ellipses you should try to stay within the bounds given to you. Some mishaps happen, but we try to avoid them as much as we can. There's no learning opportunity without some challenge in it, right? :>

You seem to have less issues during the Funnel assignment, so I'm guessing it was really just impatience rather than the inability to do it. As I said, just keep an eye on it and take a break if you notice your work starting to lack.

Boxes The essence of these assignments are to give you a first idea of boxes and how they work in perspective, which also gives you first impressions of how perspective works. I think you're on good track to understand them. Your Organic Perspective looks good in that sense. Good job on really making it look like the boxes are disappearing into the distance!

The most important part during the boxes assignments are the lines. They're the foundation your boxes are built on and if they look wobbly, so will the box, obviously.

Even though your lines have been better before, now they just look really sloppy again. I can see the dots you placed to ghost them, but I don't have the impression you actually did. Ghost them five, ten, twenty times if you need. Yes, every single line. It's hard, I know. Especially in the beginning but as you start improving you won't need to ghost each line twenty times anymore but only five times. Doing the hard work now will save you a lot of work down the line and it's not gonna get easier from here on.

Now, I want to add onto your 'I took five months' remark. Yes, you should take your time and you most of all shouldn't stress yourself too much about this. It's a learning experience and it takes time. However I want to advise you to maybe set some sort of routine. Maybe you work on it once a week, or twice a week. The thing with five months is, it's a hell of a lot of time. And by the time you sit back to continue your homework you will have forgotten what you did two months ago and your hand will too. I'm guessing that's why your lines actually became worse during the box assignment. If you don't do something, you will forget and that is true for everybody. It is your decision ultimately. This is just my advice for it.

Before you head to the 250 Box Challenge, I'd like you to do another two Pages of the Superimposed Lines and one of the Table of Ellipses. Just to get you back on track before the challenge. Don't forget to answer to this post with another Link to the Revisions so I can look over them!

Wishing you lots of luck and patience ^^

    Next Steps:

    • 2 Pages of Superimposed Lines

    • 1 Page of Table of Ellipses

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Thank you so much for your reply!! I know I'll be coming back here whenever I do this as warm-up, your explanations helped me a lot :>

You also really eased my worries because I tend to badmouth myself quite a lot despite trying not to so yes, thank you a lot for that haha

I'll do my best in the upcoming lessons and challenges, as always ^^ Thank you again!! Your advice was invaluable

Heya, sorry I'm a bit late with answering. I was a bit busy the past few days and couldn't check ^^

You're definitely improving bit by bit. Don't forget to add the Tables of Ellipses to your warm-up :> Remember: we're aiming for a confident line, not an accurate one. Accuracy comes second so don't sacrifice your smooth line for it!

Just keep a good eye on that especially and keep doing it in your warm-ups. You can go on to the 250 Box Challenge ^^

Hey there! I will be looking over your homework today ^^ Congrats on making it through the first Lesson!

So let's jump right into it~

Your Lines are looking good. There's a bit of wobbling and fraying in the beginning and that's totally normal. We're learning after all. Throughout the Lesson you keep on improving on the lines, which was really the main point so good job on that! I noticed a few times on the Ghosted Planes exercise that you redrew some of them. Remember that for this kind of exercise, even if you didn't manage to reach the point you were aiming for, keep your mistakes and work with what you have! We only really only draw over a line when we draw Boxes eg, but only to reinforce what is already there.

Your ellipses started out as extremely wobbly, as if you're taking your time with drawing them. Thankfully, you improved a lot by the time you came to the Tables of Ellipses. That's some good progress! I saw you improved this too over time, but I still want to explicitly mention that for Ellipses we draw through them at most three times, aiming for two times. As I said, you already got that at the Tables of Ellipses part, I just wanted to point it out to make sure you're aware of it consciously too.

Keep on placing those confident lines!

There's not much to say about your boxes. The most important thing are the lines, which you're working and improving on. The boxes aim to slowly accustom the student to perspective and I think you already have a good idea of how it works. I noticed you worrying about your lines and I can assure you, you will have much time to study them. During the assignments and also during warm-ups. There's nothing to worry about though, since you're doing well with them. Just keep on doing your warm-ups and studies. Just try to stick to the line you already placed and don't draw over it ten times. It only tends to throw off how the box looks like in the end.

Also you're right. One point Perspective is often used to portray clouds! Good eye on that :>

For the Organic Perspective I just want to add that the goal was to have different kinds of boxes rotate around one line, not the same box following the line. This wasn't the goal of the exercise. However, you only did this in two works, so I don't see a need to make you redo it. Just keep that in mind should you add this assignment to your warm-ups.

I noticed you drawing over or redrawing your lines for the boxes. I know boxes can be a little bit difficult, especially in the beginning. Don't worry about it too much, you will have much time to train those in the upcoming 250 Box Challenge. I wish you all the best and a lot of patience with it!

    Warmly,

    Lerin

Hey there! I will be looking over your homework today ^^ Congrats on making it through Lesson 1!

Looking over your assignments, I'm fairly sure you're not a complete beginner, so I'm glad you still want to go over the basics with Draw a Box haha

In total, there's really not much to point out in your works. Your lines are confident and straight-forward with little wobbling. On the Superimposed Lines I noticed you have a bit trouble with fraying on the arching and wavy lines. You can add that to your Warm Up if you want to work on it a bit more. In general it's totally fine to have it fraying in the beginning.

Your Ellipses are also great. Very confident line-placing and little wobbling. One thing to keep an eye on here is that we only draw through our ellipses at a MAXIMUM of three times, whereas I see you drawing through them five times in some. So again: Maximum of three times, aiming for only two times.

In the boxes assignment the most important thing were the lines and introducing the student slowly to perspective. It wasn't really the most important thing but you seem to already have a good grasp on perspective and how vanishing points and so on work. Which is also fairly visible in the Rotated Boxes assignment.

Since it's an integral part of Draw a Box and you do have the chance to work on a thing or two on it as well, I still want to send you directly to the 250 Box Challenge. I wish you all the best with it!

    Warmly,

    Lerin

It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Sakura Pigma Microns

Sakura Pigma Microns

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
