Seems like your more or less on the right track. I find myself getting hung over on texture too. The best advice I could give off of my experience is to pace yourself. Since texture is the first exercise that deals with observation I've found that it takes a bit more concentration than the exercises leading up to it. It can be difficult sometimes but I find that being able to catch myself when I'm too exhausted and stepping away for a moment usually is the better option. As for smoother textures that might be something you want to avoid starting off. With something bumpier you might have a better time being able to conceptualize where the cast shadows are. I would also recommend checking out ScyllaStew's and Creative Crusade's videos on the texture exercises if you haven't already. There linked in the Discord but ill put them here just in case. They might help you get some insight in to how you can tackle your textures. Hope this helps and good luck. You got this.

Hello Kirnic and welcome to drawwabox! If your pen starts to dry/break it's important that you change it, because otherwise it's gonna be super hard to assess your exercises, because we can not know what is because of your lack of skill and what is because of the pen. So whenever it happens I recommend to take a break and wait until you get one.

However on lesson 1 and the box challenge you can use ballpoint instead, so if a fineliner breaks you can switch to a ballpoint until you get back a new fineliner.

Overall you've done a good attempt on the exercises, but there are a few important things I want to discuss, let's talk about them while we go through each exercise section by section!:

Starting with your lines they start off a bit wobbly but by the end of the lines exercises you're doing a great job committing to your lines and drawing them confidently even if they're going to miss then ending dot, which is just what we're looking for!

They still have a little bit of wobble though, so keep reminding yourself to always focus on drawing the lines as confident as you can make them. Accuracy comes later.

Sometimes I can see a bit of fraying at both ends of the lines, make sure that whenever you draw a line you carefully place the pen at the starting dot so the lines can fray on maximum one end.

Another thing is that sometimes you repeat lines that were off. No matter how off a line is do your best not to repeat it, keep going as if it was correct as redrawing them will make the drawing messier and can encourage bad habits.

Last thing here is that I think you aren't drawing starting and ending points for all of your lines on the ghosted planes. If this is the case make sure you do it because it's super important for applying the ghosting method properly.

Moving onto your ellipses you're overall doing a good job with confidence, good job! The main thing is that even if the confidence is good, sometimes you miss several ellipses in a row, which hints that you might not be planning every single ellipse to the best of your ability. Make sure you ghost enough each ellipse until you're confident with them, and remind yourself always that the ellipses on the tables of ellipses must touch top and bottom lines and the ellipses at their sides.

Another very important thing is that on the ghosted planes with ellipses you are only drawing through your ellipses 1 time. Make sure you draw through them 2-3 times just like on the tables of ellipses.

Lastly on your funnels sometimes you aren't aligning the ellipses to the minor axis. Make sure you always aim for the ellipses to be cut symmetrically by the middle line even if that means you need to ignore the initial curves. Pay also attention to the angle of the ellipses as well. They have to be cut symmetrically by the line, so they can't be tilted.

Finally in your boxes a few things:

-Your lines start to get a bit wobbly consistently unlike previously, your first priority with lines is to make them confident and straight just like in the lines section, so focus on that first and don't worry if you need to sacrifice accuracy to achieve it.

Here's one example, top line is a level 1 line, and bottom line is a level 0 line. This is because a confident line will always be better than a wobbly line in these exercises. In general try to approach them just like an individual ghosted lines exercise. Remember that these boxes don't have to look good, they're just practice for yourself. So if they help you get better it doesn't matter how they look!

-Sometimes you repeat lines that were off or cross them. No matter how off a line is do your best not to repeat it, keep going as if it was correct as redrawing them will make the drawing messier and can encourage bad habits.

-Another similar thing happens with hatching, whenever you do hatching do it line by line making sure that each line don't fray on both ends, take as much time as you need to do it cleanly. Don't rush it.

-On rough perspective you aren't applying the line extension method properly. Give a reread to the instructions again. The main thing is that you should extend your lines, not just take the place where the line started and draw a line to the vanishing point. The point of this part of the exercise is to realize how far your lines where from the actual vanishing point , so it isn't useful to just draw a line towards it.

-In general the rough perspective, plotted perspective and rotated boxes are too messy both because crossing lines and the hatching lines. Like I said take your time with them so even if it has mistakes it is clean!

-On organic perspective you're doing a good job planning your lines and executing them apart from the repeating lines issues I already mentioned. The perspective of the boxes has issues but that's not a problem as you'll work on it on the box challenge.

Before moving on I want you to do 1 more page of ellipses in ghosted planes making sure you draw 2 times through each ellipse, one page of rough perspective making sure you apply the instructions properly, draw lines confidently and don't repeat lines. And draw another page of rotated boxes in which I also want you not to repeat any line and to approach hatching line by line carefully so the lines don't fray on both ends.

Good luck on it, and keep up the good work, you're almost there!

    Next Steps:

-1 page of ghosted ellipses on planes

    -1 page of rough perspective

    -1 page of organic perspective

Steven Zapata's Secrets of Shading

Some of you will have noticed that Drawabox doesn't teach shading at all. Rather, we focus on the understanding of the spatial relationships between the form we're drawing, which feeds into how one might go about applying shading. When it comes time to learn about shading though, you're going to want to learn it from Steven Zapata, hands down.
