    Hey there Jonbull,

Congrats on finishing Lesson 1. For the most part, a lot of these exercises are done correctly so don't worry if your skills arent up to par just yet. You will be doing a lot of these exercises as warm ups in the future and you'll be able to build up those skills as you go.

With your super imposed lines assignment, I noticed that your lines appear to be fraying at both ends. This in my experience is usually from students who don't make sure to line up their pen with the original starting point. Be sure to do that when you use this exercise as warm up in the future so you know if you are bowing your lines or not. I see some bowing and mild curves in your submission but don't worry, in time you will get better at drawing them straight.

With your ghosted lines assignment I am seeing some sway from your lines. Remember to keep practicing ghosting those lines and drawing with confidence when you think you have it.

Your ghosted planes and ellipses have the same issues. where lines have a bit of wobble. Don't worry about it now, the 250 Box Challenge will be a good opportunity to practice getting those lines right. Ellipses are hard but you did a good attempt at them. I struggle with them myself personally, in the future when using the ghosted planes to warm up, try to make sure you get the ellipses to touch the sides of the walls.

Good job with your box assignments. The rotated boxes assignment are extrememely daunting to do, and finishing it shows you have a lot of tenacity. You did a good job with the rough perspective assignment as well. I do notice one of the lines appears rougher which comes from trying to draw over it multiple times. Unless you are trying to adjust the line width, its best to avoid redrawing over lines as it makes the form of the object look rough or sketchy, which isn't our goal on this program.

Your organic rotated boxes assignment is very good. It follows the instructions. My only nitpick is that some of the edges do not follow perspective but dont worry because you'll soon be getting plenty of practice with the 250 box challenge. All-in-all you did a good job! Don't forget to warm up with some of these exercises.

Congrats on going through the gauntlet. It looks like you've already started on later lessons so I'll keep it short.

Regarding your box construction, you do a good job making sure the edges of the boxes converge to the vanishing point. I see improvement as you continued on with the challenge.

Regarding line work, you draw really crisp and clean boxes. I do recommend you integrate drawing boxes every so often in your warm ups and practice line weight as well.

I believe you are ready to continue to the next lesson if you haven't already.

    Next Steps:

Begin Lesson 2 if you have not already.

Good job with completing the 250 Box Challenge

Throughout the challenge, you show competence with making your linework clean and you have very good hatching. Good job on implementing line weights to your boxes. I do notice some slight bowing in some of your box edges, just keep those in mind as you continue in future lessons.

With the box constructions, I see you are steadily improving with making your lines converge into the vanishing point.

You have done a great job. Don't forget to draw a few every so often during warm ups.

    Next Steps:

    Move on to Lesson 2.

Great job completing the gauntlet. I see a lot of improvement with your line confidence and making sure those back edges diverge to the vanishing point correctly. Something I recommend is practicing line weight with your boxes.

You've done a really good job. I noticed you have already gone to do the other lessons. Good luck with your drawing journey!

Move on to Lesson 2 if you have not already.

Hey! Congrats on finishing Lesson 2!

Very very well done with the textures assignment. You seem to have a good understanding of how to make them gradually fade and you do a great job of making them curve around the sausage forms. Minor nitpicks for me would probably be the ladybug skin where the dots don't curve around the form but instead stay circle-like.

Good job with your form intersect assignment. One good thing to practice is having your forms intersect deeper into the forms. I do notice your spheres and ellipses do need some more line confidence but in time that comes.

Great job with your organic intersecting forms.

    Next Steps:

You are ready for Lesson 3.

Hey Rhhshsh, congrats on completing Lesson 1!

Some of your pictures are a little blurry but I'll try to help however I can.

For your superimposed lines, I see there is some fraying near the end, don't worry, this is normal for beginners and with time you'll get better. This exercise is a really good warm up for future lessons.

For your ghosted lines, some lines have a bit of wobble to them but again its just going to come down to practice. You'll be getting a lot of it with the 250 box challenge. With this exercise, remember you are trying to end the line AT the dot, not keep drawing past it. Try to avoid the "rat tail" when you use this exercise as warm up in the future.

You do a good job with your ellipses, some of them don't touch all the edges of the walls of the plane. I recommend going slower but keep your arm in control to make sure you hit all the edges.

Good job with the box exercises. With the rough perspective exercise, I noticed some of your lines are rough and sketchy looking. In my experience, this is usually from trying to correct lines that may not have come out as well as we would like. I do it a lot too but its a bad habit because it ends up muddling the picture we make. Its the reason why we use pen for DaB so we can break down those bad habits. Remember to ghost your lines to reduce your chances of drawing a line you might not like.

Good job with your rotated box assignment. That one is a killer assignment but you pushed through! My only critique is working on adding thickness to the edges of your boxes. You can improve a lot on it with the superimposed lines exercise. I wouldn't worry about it too much right now, but keep it in mind when you work on the 250 box challenge.

Your organic rotated boxes are good as well. Only minor complaint is some of the boxes are out of perspective with some of the box edges out of perspective but again you'll be getting a lot of practice in the challenge.

You did a good job! Keep up the hard work!

Good job! Begin the 250 box challenge.

Hey Nagasaravanan! Great job on finishing Lesson 2!

One thing I noticed with your arrows assignment is a lot of them seem to stay on the same flat plane as the page. There isn't really a good way to practice this outside of just incorporating them into your warm ups. Your second page of arrows already shows a lot of improvement with showing dimensionality.

With your organic sausage forms I noticed your contours and ellipses well drawn but they are of consistent width throughout the sausage. The widths of the sausages should get wider or narrower depending on the perspective of the sausage in relation to the viewer.

Good job with your textures assignment. My only critique with them is the textures they sometimes don't wrap around the organic forms. This can be seen with the hall cracks and corn textures. A good example of the textures wrapping around the organic forms is the croc skin texture you did. It looks really good.

Good job with the intersecting forms assignment. This was was a brain melter for me and I dont see anything you can improve here outside of just practice. With the organic intersections, I think some of those cast shadows would wrap lower down the forms of the sausages. Otherwise, you did a really good job with line confidence and shading.

I think you are ready for the next lesson!

    Next Steps:

Great job! Move on to Lesson 3!

Hey Kruczynski, congrats on finishing Lesson 1!

With your super imposed lines assignment I see your lines do fray near the end. That is completely normal especially for beginners. A good tip is if you notice your lines bowing in one direction, is to force yourself to draw a line that feels like it almost bows in the other direction to counteract it. Eventually you'll be drawing pretty straight lines.

Your ghosted lines assignment and ghosted planes assignment are done very well. Good job on your ghosted planes especially! I like to use this exercise when warming up. I don't know what pen you are using but I noticed that they appear to be drying up. However, if your pens aren't drying up this is caused from not pushing your pen to the paper hard enough which was a habit I had early on to DaB.

Good job with your ellipses. They are a very good exercise to use when warming up and you've done them well.

With your rough perspective exercise, you are not drawing the edge of the box towards the vanishing point. I understand that the concept of a vanishing point can be difficult to understand but I highly recommend rereading thorough the lesson and giving this one another chance. I am awful at explaining vanishing points but a good way to visualize the lines that will be going to the vanishing point in one point perspective is by holding a small box like a tissue box in front of you with one of the sides facing you. Have one hand on the left and right side each. Notice the lines on the sides of the box that are parallel with your arms. Notice how they seem to converge together to a point somewhere in the distance like this "/\". You are trying to recreate this with this lesson here. Again, my best suggestion is just reading through the assignment again and watch the video Uncomfortable posted.

Good job with the rotated boxes assignment! It is a really difficult task and completing it is 90% of the work. In my opinion, this exercise is more mental than to enforce any techniques. You're going to be experiencing a lot of roughness when practicing through these exercises and finishing is more to prove yourself that you can over come any mental roadblocks. My only critique is your lines appear wobbly when going towards the vanishing point. Remember to ghost your lines. When you proceed to the 250 box challenge, you will have a lot of opportunities to practice that so don't worry.

You're organic box assignment is good. I notice some of the boxes are out of perspective because the lines dont converge to a vanishing point but don't worry. You'll be getting a lot of practice in the 250 box exercise.

    Next Steps:

I recommend doing the rough perspective exercise again. Once you do, you are ready for the 250 box exercise.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Good job with finishing Lesson 1.

With your imposed lines, I see that the lines are fraying at both ends. While fraying at the end is normal for beginners, fraying at the beginning suggests that you are not taking the time to line up the drawing utensil. DaB has a focus on precision and structure and the exercises are there to develop good habits for later lessons.

With your ghosted lines assignment, I see that your lines show straightness to them which is good. It shows that you are ghosting the action. The lines to miss the mark sometimes but that is normal. Integrate this exercise in your warm ups, and you'll get better with time.

With your ghosted plane assignment, I see that there is a focus on accuracy. The lines do connect to their points but they are shaky at some points. This is normal for beginners. Remember to ghost those lines.

Ellipses are hard but you do a good attempt with them in your exercises. When you warm up ellipses in the future, try to limit yourself to 1-3 rotations max when drawing the ellipses. In your submission they look sketchy and keeping it about 1-2 rotations makes it look much cleaner.

With your perspective box exercise, I noticed that your lines appear sketchy which shows you are drawing multiple times over the lines to "correct" them. This isn't a great habit to build because the sketchy look muddles the shape of an object. This is noticeable with the organic perspective exercise where box edges can be seen redrawn multiple times. Remember to ghost straight lines you learned from earlier in your future assignments.

Good job with completing the rotated boxes assignment. It is one of the more difficult assignments in the whole DaB library and you pushed through it well. My only critique is again sketchy lines for boxes caused by drawing over multiple times.

I noticed your exercises are done in pencil. Remember that DaB Exercises are best when done in pen. This is to keep yourself to from worrying about erasing and it also keeps you from drawing sketchy muddled lines. Again, a lot of these current exercises are used as warm ups for later lessons and its a good habit to run through them for 10ish minutes. Doing these correctly is to ensure you are warming up properly and building correct muscle memory in the future.

You did a good job going through these assignments, however, I do believe you should at least do one page of ghosted lines and one page of ghosted planes with a pen. The ghosted planes exercise is the one I do the most and I implement it when warming up. It is important to build proper habits by doing it correctly in pen and it utilizes a bunch of important skills like ghosting, accuracy, and drawing ellipses. If you don't have a felt tip pen, thats fine! You can use a ballpoint pen as well for this exercise but I very highly recommend getting a felt tip as explained in Lesson 0.

    Next Steps:

Finish one page of ghosted lines and one page of ghosted planes in pen. Afterwards, you can go begin the 250 box challenge.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Sakura Pigma Microns

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
