hi Lawky! i'm Koyomi and i'm going to review your lesson 1 submission.

first, let's talk about the submission in itself. your photos are nicely taken, pretty good lighting, no shadows and well framed but the quality of your camera is pretty bad.

it shouldn't be a problem here just know that you're less likely to receive feedback with a bad camera quality so if that's something that you can improve i would highly recommend that you do!

    1. lines

-your lines are looking pretty nice! i can notice some arching in the ghosted lines/ghosted planes exercises, it can be fixed by trying to arch consciously in the opposite direction.

    2. ellipses

-your ellipses are pretty good too, on the ellipses table exercise i notice some ellipses that overlaps each other, remember to keep them within their bounds, they should touch each other without overlapping. same with the funnels exercise!

    3. boxes

-on the rotated box exercise, some of your boxes aren't rotating.

your organic perspective exercise is not too bad, just try to think more in therm of depth, what's in front and what's behind and don't be afraid to overlap your boxes in this exercise

    Next Steps:

move on to the 250 boxes challenge, good luckk!!

hey Violightbug! i'm Koyomi and i'm going to review your lesson 1 submission.

    1. lines

your lines are pretty wobbly, remember to prioritize confidence over accuracy. a confident line will always be correct no matter how off, accuracy is something that develops with time!

    2. ellipses

i think that your ellipses are more confident than your lines so good job but i still notice some wobbles in your ellipses, just like with lines remember to prioritize confidence over accuracy.

on the ellipses table exercise i notice some ellipses that overlaps each other, remember to keep them within their bounds, they should touch each other without overlapping.

on the bottom left funnel of the funnels exercise, your ellipses are not getting separated in two symmetrical halves, because the minor axis is not centered.

    3. boxes

on the rotated boxes exercise, some of your boxes are not rotating.

i think it would've been better if you did it bigger

appart from that i have not much to say about your boxes!

    Next Steps:

move on to the 250 boxes challenge and good luck!!!

hey Wamz! i'm Koyomi and i'm going to review your lesson 1 submission.

    1. lines

your lines are good, really confident and clean so props for that! that's where students often struggle the most.

some of them are arching though, it can happen if you use your elbow instead of the shoulder but it can also happen if you use your shoulder too, so in this case try to arch consciously in the opposite direction.

    2. ellipses

on the ellipses in planes exercise you worry too much about your accuracy, remember to ghost your ellipses and to be confident.

on your funnels, remember to follow the minor axis and to "cut" your ellipses in two symmetrical halfs

    3. boxes

i have not much to say about your boxes you've done a pretty good job!

    Next Steps:

move on to the 250 boxes challenge, don't forget the 50% rule and good luck!!

hey Namelessflux! i'm Koyomi and i'm going to review your lesson 1 submission.

    1. lines

your superimposed lines are looking pretty good, some of your lines are fraying on both ends though so remember to always place your pen carefully on the starting dot.

there are some wobbly lines in the ghosted lines and ghosted planes exercise, remember to always prioritize confidence over accuracy!

    2. ellipses

i think that your ellipses are not too bad, some of them are pretty wobbly so i'd mention it but remember to prioritize confidence over accuracy. don't draw that much through your ellipses though 2 or 3 times should be enough if it doesn't go well then just leave it like this.

on your funnels, remember to follow the minor axis and to "cut" your ellipses in two symmetrical halfs

    3. boxes

first, be carefull about the orientation of your photos before posting them on the website, it will make it easier for someone to give you a feedback, and some people will avoid submissions with a bad presentation.

moving on to the boxes, some boxes on the rotated boxes exercise does not rotate https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/d73eea49.jpg

but i have not much more to say here you've done a pretty good job!

it is really, but remember not to rush it and not to burn yourself out. if you can, try to aim for consistency even if it's only a page per day, i spent 2 whole months on this because i was inconsistent.. and don't forget the 50% rule!

hey donkey! i'm koyomi and i'm going to review your lesson 1 submission.

    1.lines

your superimposed lines exercise is really nicely done! i notice a lot of wobbly lines on the other exercises so remember to always prioritize confidence over accuracy!

    2. ellipses

same problem here your ellipses are pretty wobbly but not much more to say you're doing a good job so far, your funnels looks pretty good!

    3. boxes

i have not much to say about your boxes i don't notice any big mistakes, they're pretty great!

    Next Steps:

move on to the 250 boxes challenge, good luck!! and don't forget to apply the 50% rule!

Hello Rivgar, thank you very much for providing such an helpful critique i will take it into account !

when you notice your lines are starting to arch, try to just go in the opposite direction to straighten it up without really "arching it" in the opposite direction, and if your lines become wobbly remember to be confident and not too slow. i don't know if i can really help you more than that sorry

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
