    Hi

    Superimposed Lines

    looks good

no wobble, only fraying at the end not the beginning

    Ghosted lines

    looks good

good accuracy, straigt lines, no wobble

    Ghosted Planes

    looks good

    Tables of Ellipses

    looks good

two full rotations, fit well, evenly shaped

    Ellipses in Planes

    looks good

fit really well in the boxes, evenly shaped

    Funnels

    looks good

good alignment, fit well, two full rotations

    Plotted Perspective

    looks good

    Rough Perspective

    looks good

    Rotated Boxes

    looks good but missing corners

    consistent convergence and spacing

The corners on the right side are missing. and the one on the bottom left is missing the bottom half.

They don't have to be perfect but just drawing what you need to draw regardless of what it looks like in the end is probably good for practice.

    Organic Perspective

looks good, but try not to draw lines twice

If you miss, you miss, it doesn't matter. I also struggle with this but remember it's just practice. You will not show these boxes to anyone later, they don't have to look that good. Its better to miss the points than to get used to drawing lines twice. Use more ghosting instead if you want to be more accurate. You have a lot of chances to look out for this in the 250 boxes challenge and you did not have an issue with this in previous exercises therefore I will not ask you to do this exercise again.

PS: I am still waiting for someone to accept my revisions for my lesson 1 submission. Feel free to check it out, its just one or two pages I think.

    Next Steps:

Add the corners for rotated boxes exercise and upload it in a reply to this comment. Rest was really good.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hey there, congratulations for finishing Lesson 1. I'll give some feedback on your homework.

    • Lines: Your superimposed lines look confident. I see some wobble in the ghosted lines but it seems you resolved it in the ghosted planes page. Now with your lines being more straight, you can focus your ghosting on reaching the endpoint.

    • Ellipses: In the planes your ellipses look well shaped and you're making good attempts for them to fit correctly. Your funnels also look corectly aligned and symmetrical, now you can try to vary the degrees of your ellipses.

    • Boxes: Well done with the plotted perspective and you did great with the rectangular forms in the rough perspective exercise, just try to ghost more prioritising a confident line to avoid wobbling. In the rotated boxes exersice most of your boxes are correctly rotating but there are some boxes wich edges could rotate more, and the corner boxes are missing (4). For this I only suggest you to review the content of rotated boxes again, so you make shure you understand the concept. Your organic perspective looks fine, the perspective keeps gradual and your lines are better, but there's a few boxes with diverging edges so feel free to take your time placing your dots to make shure you edges are actually converging, but is not a big issue for you.

For the last I suggest you to start using line weight and hatching lines, because these are useful tools that we'll be employing frequently in the course.

    Next Steps:

The next step is 250 Box Challenge.

In the lines exercise I noticed you didn't always take the time to align your pen with the starting dot, just be patient and align your pen more carefully. In the later exercises, try not to draw your lines twice even if you would want to correct it. In the funnels exercise try to keep the ellipses traight so the line cuts them in the middle. l can't spot anything else, good job!

Hello I'm Simon and will be reviewing your Lesson 1 :)

    1. Superimposed lines

First of all you did a good job of drawing your lines confidently and committing to the stroke once you started it. Fraying is only visible on the end of your lines that proves you took the time to start each stroke on the same point, well done!

    2. Ghosted lines

Well done your Ghosted lines do not wobble. Your lines remain straight, that's good in the future keep the habit of drawing with your whole arm so you have long confident lines! You did a good job of having your lines end up near or on the final dot, keep practicing this exercise (and the others) in your warmups to get even better at it!

    3. Ghosted planes

You did a really good job of doing your ghosted planes, your lines are as good/better than the ones from your previous exercises.

    4. Table of ellipses

Great job on drawing through every single ellipse twice! Make sure you keep doing that with every single ellipse you draw along the course! You tried to fit every ellipse and circle snugly along the borders of your tables good job, it is tough to achieve but as long as you keep striving for it you'll improve! Most of your ellipses are evenly shaped and appear smooth good job! Getting a perfect ellipse is a really hard job but you'll have time to work on it through your warmups.

    5. Ellipses in planes

Once again good job on drawing through every ellipse twice! You tried and managed to fit your ellipses right between the four sides great job on managing to do that! Most of your ellipses are evenly shapes good job here too.

    6. Funnels

Here too you tried to fit every ellipse snugly along the curves well done, even if it is tougher to do with a non straight edge it's a really good practice. You kept most of your ellipses along the direction of the minor axis, keep practicing this exercise as a warmup in your next lessons.

    7. Plotted perspective

As mentioned in the exercise you used a ruler to draw your boxes that's all good. You kept the first lines of your boxes perpendicular to the horizon as you should've, well done. You made sure to plot every single line back to the right vanishing point so good job, even though some back corners don't come out perfectly that's completely fine :)

    8. Rough perspective

Managing to land every single line exactly back to the vanishing point is a near impossible task at this point but what's important is you tried and most of your lines do try to reach that center point! Some of your boxes front/back aren't rectangular, that's probably due to rushing, when doing this exercise take all the time you need to set up your sides so that they form a rectangle, the front and back being a rectangle should be more important than the sides going exactly to the vanishing point. You managed to draw every line extension in the right direction, that could get a little tougher in the 250 boxes since you have to extend in 3 directions but this shows you got the base of how to do it! You seem to have used the ghosting method for every stroke that's good! Keep using it for every stroke and your exercises will look much better than if you didn't!

    9. Rotated boxes

The setup of your rotated boxes is well laid out with the cross and the 4 cubes to strive for in each cardinal direction :) You kept the gaps between each box tight and consistent. That's a key to having a good result with this exercise. You are correctly rotating your boxes, if you traced the vanishing point of every box you'd see it moving as your boxes rotate more and more! Drawing through your boxes is also a key part of the exercise and is also making you start practicing this skill that will be used for every box in the 250 challenge. You don't seem to have properly drawn every box of the whole set though, if you go and look back at the demo of this exercise you should see that there are two boxes in every single direction of the central boxes, achieving at the end a sort of 5x5 square being wrapped around a ball, I strongly encourage you to finish this exercise before you move on to the 250 boxes challenge!

    10. Organic perspective

Once again using the ghosting method for every single stroke of this course is a crucial part into getting good habits for your whole drawing journey! Some of your boxes seem to have parallel or diverging lines, that's a common mistake when drawing shallower foreshortening boxes and the only way to get better at it will be through taking the time to place each stroke carefully while drawing your boxes, take your time. You will also improve on this as you move through the 250 boxes challenge! You did a good job of drawing shallower foreshortening here as some people tend to go into more dramatic foreshortening which in this exercise as the effect of making the boxes seem inconsistent in scale compared to each other, overall making the drawing less solid and less believable.

    Good job overall :)

Don't forget to complete your 50/50 rule and to add these exercises to your warmups for future lessons!

Also I strongly encourage you to go review some submissions on the website :) You can review some lessons 1 and once you've completed future lessons review those as well. Don't hesitate to do a review every so often. It really benefits you so you don't forget the point of the previous exercises and helps other people who are waiting on a review :)

Feel free to move on to the 250 Box challenge

Hello and welcome to drawabox! I will be critiquing your homework today. I hope you find it useful.

I couldn't find any issues with your lines and boxes, this shows you understood the subjects and what the assignments where asking so good job!

In one of your pages for your Rough Perspective the back faces of some boxes aren't rectangular. While I think this is OK specially since the other page is a lot better it's a very useful skill to approximate the intersection of two lines which aren't drawn since it will be used heavily in the 250 box challenge. In the Rough Perspective specifically you can try ghosting the line which goes to the vanishing point first then ghost one of the edges of your back rectangle. This way you kept both of these lines in mind and the estimated point you put down is a lot closer to the actual edge of the back rectangle than if you just ghosted the vanishing point line.

The Rotated Boxes is missing 10 boxes and because of this as per the Official Lesson 1 Critique Guide it's advised that I ask you to do this exercise again with all of the 25 boxes. It's a very difficult I know but it's better to attempt and fail than to not do it. Keep these in mind when doing this revision:

    • The back faces of the boxes should rotate as well, not just the front face

    • There's an extra box at the bottom middle so make sure to read the instructions carefully since there should only be 2 more rotated boxes at the top, bottom, left and right of the center box

    • I encourage looking how other students done this exercise as well as to ask in this website or the discord your questions to clear up any confusions you have

For the Organic Perspective I think you missed a page since the two pictures are the same but one is cropped and the other isn't. So make sure to include the second page in your revision and if you haven't done it already it's a good opportunity to mention that parallel lines converge as they get further away since a few of your boxes do the opposite and look distorted, to make them look even less distorted you can try putting more space between the lines of your initial Y, meaning every angle between the lines of Y must be more than 90 degrees.

So overall I need 1 Rotated Boxes page and 1 Organic Perspective page. Make sure to not rush and read the instructions carefully when doing this revision. I'll try checking everyday so you can move onto the 250 box challenge when you're done.

    Next Steps:

Provide 1 page of Rotated Boxes and 1 page of Organic Perspective

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello,I will be critiquing your assignment (This is my first critique so forgive me for leaving anything out),without any further due lets begin.

    Lines-

Superimposed Lines- Your lines are executed confidently but there is fraying on both ends. You could have just been rushing to get it done or wasn't looking where you placed your lines, this can suggest lack of confidence (Which is fine, ive made that mistake sometimes),when you're doing your this for warmups make sure to watch where you're starting.

Ghosted Lines- What ive noticed that sometimes you overshoot or under shoot(maybe between level 2 or 3),I would suggest something that uncomfortable stated, which is lifitng your pen as you hit that point .I also see that sometimes your lines arch a bit,i'll quote what the critique guide says ”they may want to try intentionally arcing their stroke a little in the opposite direction to counteract the natural curve.“

Ghosted Planes- Mostly the same issues as the ghosted lines(again, the quote)

    Ellipses-

Ellipses Table- It seems like for some ellipses you didnt go through them 2 times. There are also some gaps between some elipises which might suggest you are drawing without a concerte goal in mind.I may also see some uneven elipises but im not too sure.

Ellipses Planes- Again, some of your lines are faded,im not sure if you're holding the pen at the right angle? Im not too sure but anyways, but you understood the assigment and it seems like issue with drawing through your elipises 2 times has diminished but it is still an issue that I would look out for.

Ellipses Funnel- I dont have much too say.You definently had improvment in drawing through your elipises 2 times, awesome! You did well.I do think you can squeeze in maybe a couple more funnels but so far it looks great!

    Boxes-

Plotted Perspective- I dont have much to say for this. But it seems like you did 2 more? Im guessing you got it mixed up,thats fine though i do think next time you should reread the matrial next time youre unsure of something

Rough Perspective- It seems like some of youre boxes arent exactly perptucular to the horzion line and your height lines are not always parallel .Thats fine,I struggle with that myself.Again I can see that your lines are arching, maybe you're not using you're shoulder? Again I would say a lot of my critism is that same as the ghosted lines.

Rotated Boxes- It seems like you didnt finish some of your boxes? I would say to finish the assignment and turn it back in. Also, some of your boxes are not exactly convering and are diverging.Im gonna quote from the guide again,"at least one of the boxes' sets of parallel edges will have its vanishing point move - frequently it'll be two. So if all the vanishing points remain the same between boxes that should be oriented differently, the student may be misunderstanding the concepts of this exercise."

Organic Perspective- One big thing I can see is that your constanlty trying to fix your mistakes.I say to let mistakes be mistakes as thats what is requried for the course. Also,I would suggest thinking about youre lines before hand and thinking about the line youre going to make.Anyways, some of your boxes are diverging away, again like i said,I would say give yourself time to think about that line before you mark it and to continue to do that as you move onto the box challenge.Youre using a shallow foreshorting which is fine,I would suggest to lean into more rapid convergence.

    Next Steps:

Anyways,I suggest finishing the rotated boxes exercise and move onto the box challenge

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

That's a key to having a good result with this exercise. You seem to understand how to rotate your boxes, but don’t seem to rotate them enough, that’s fine since it still shows that you understood the assignment but if you can I’d like you to try this exercise once more while keeping an eye on the side squares you drew at the start as a goal for you 2nd box on each side. Drawing through your boxes is also a key part of the exercise and is also making you start practicing this skill that will be used for every box in the 250 challenge. You drew every single box well done! Many people forget some boxes in the corner but you didn't!

    10. Organic perspective

Once again using the ghosting method for every single stroke of this course is a crucial part into getting good habits for your whole drawing journey! Looks like your boxes don't have parallel or diverging edges for the most part well done! That's already a great skill to have moving forward in the 250 boxes challenge. You did a good job of drawing shallower foreshortening here as some people tend to go into more dramatic foreshortening which in this exercise as the effect of making the boxes seem inconsistent in scale compared to each other, overall making the drawing less solid and less believable.

Hello and welcome to Drawabox and congrats on finishing the first lesson. I will be critiquing your submission. I hope you find it useful.

    Lines

Your Superimposed Lines exercise is done right, however for other exercises which involve freehand line drawing I suspect you're prioritizing accuracy over confidence, which according to the levels of the ghosted lines exercise drawing an accurate line comes after a confident one. It's OK to overshoot or miss the mark as long as you aim to draw a straight line with your shoulder. Other than this you've understood the instructions perfectly. Good job!

    Ellipses

It's expected to wobble a little when drawing the ellipses but this much wobbling might mean you didn't prioritize drawing a confident circle enough. So like the lines try aiming for drawing a smooth circle even if it's not accurate in your future lessons' warm-ups. Other than this I didn't see any other issue so good job!

    Boxes

There's not an issue I could find. Just remember what I've said about the lines, specially in the 250 box challenge which is as much about drawing confident lines as drawing accurate boxes.

I think you've grasped the concepts of the whole lesson and ready to put them into practice in future warm-ups. Keep in mind what I said about your lines and ellipses confidence. Again, congratulations and keep up the good work!

Rapid Viz

Rapid Viz

Rapid Viz is a book after mine own heart, and exists very much in the same spirit of the concepts that inspired Drawabox. It's all about getting your ideas down on the page, doing so quickly and clearly, so as to communicate them to others. These skills are not only critical in design, but also in the myriad of technical and STEM fields that can really benefit from having someone who can facilitate getting one person's idea across to another.

Where Drawabox focuses on developing underlying spatial thinking skills to help facilitate that kind of communication, Rapid Viz's quick and dirty approach can help students loosen up and really move past the irrelevant matters of being "perfect" or "correct", and focus instead on getting your ideas from your brain, onto the page, and into someone else's brain as efficiently as possible.
