hey jenes. Im sorry i have missed your in depth critic. This is so valuable and thank you so much for pointing it out. I agree. Most hardest for me was the form intersection rather than the texture one. Thank you for referencing those images about intersection. I will practice that because it seems like that is very important as real world objects are combination of intersection anyways.

I'd also like to thank you for taking your time and providing critics on my work. I genuienly appreciate it.

I'd move on but im still practicing older lessons. Such as boxes and sausages.

When i was drawing sausage i did not intentionally made them in 3 views like you said. Bending away, towards etc. i'll be doing that now.

Lastly Thank you once again and Happy new year :D

    Perfect. thanks for the help

here. i tried more of these. few mistakes here and there. and if you see double lines then they are not me correcting my mistakes. those came because i was ghosting.

let me know what you think?

    Thanks

    hello Elodon,

sorry for the really late reply i really got busy with other stuff. here is the revision you asked of me.

    250 box challenge ( Revision) https://imgur.com/gallery/BpmFp6a

it was really hard to find a balance between dramatic boxes and the boxes whose line do not appear parallel. hope i did good. any critics?

    Hello LORD_DARDON,

So glad to have you part of this community and hope you are doing okay?

Here are my thoughts on your homework.

    • Very good superimposed lines. There's very less fraying on the opposite side and good job on the curves too.

    • Now as for ghosting lines, the number one thing that this exercise requires is confidence. (meaning straight confident lines). But i see lot of wobbling here and there on many lines. Upon seeing you are VERY good at connecting the lines properly to the points and MAYBE thats why some of your lines came out wobbly. At this stage it is okay if your lines are not precise but it should be confident straight lines.

    • I like your lines in ghosting planes. Very straight and confident. Also like the ellipses inside of it. Even then there are few wobblying for ellipses here and there but its not lot.

    • In the funnel exercise, In few of the funnels at the side, the line does not cut evenly in between those circle. the line is meant to represent how the circles are placed and hence it should be splitting those ellipses in the middle. In the future do pay attention to that.

    • In rough perspective, SINCE there's only one vanishing point on the page the face of the box would always face the viewer. And because of that the verticle lines would always be perpendicular to the horizon line and horizontal lines would always be parallel to the horizon lines. I see couple of boxes where this rule is not followed. Get familiar with this concept since this will help you in 250 box challenge.

    • Loved your rotated box exercise as well.

    • Overall, good job on your lesson 1.

    Next Steps:

I would like to ask you to do just one page of ghosting lines where you try not get your lines wobbling. Place two points, start at one point and using ghosting method just draw a line up to the end point. Its okay to not be precise (meaning not connecting to the points) but mainly focus on getting a straight confident line. With practice as you go forward precision will come naturally.

    Hello DORIASO,

Good to see you completed lesson 1 and hope you are doing good as well.

I really liked your submissions and almost all of your exercises have been upto the lesson 1 rules.

    • Superimposed lines are really good. There is less fraying on the right side which can be sometimes difficult to achieve.

    • Good job on ghosting lines as well, Although i saw just one line where you didnt not reach the point and hence you compensated that with drawing a small line to reach it. (There is one just right of the middle). This should be avoided and you have to most extent. This is just a nitpic. Mistakes are okay in DAB.

    • REALLY REALLY happy with ghosted planes and ellipses between them. Its good to so many ellipses touch the planes just right. (how it should be.)

    • Good job on ellipses and funnel exercises as well.

    • I like the rotated box exercise as well. Im sure that was time consuming and difficult to do but nevertheless very helpful as you go forward in your drawing journey.

    • The only thing i would like to tell you is that the rough perspective. The entire exercise is such that there is only one vanishing point (VP) and its in the back. Since there is only one vanishing point The front horizontal and standing lines would be straight to the paper or the horizon line. For example: the standing lines of the boxes would be (almost) perpendicular to the horizon lines and the straight lines would be (almost) parallel to the horizon lines. I say almost because we cannot ever have 100% right? The lines which are going BACK to the VP would differ with the distance of the box

    • Overall really liked your lesson 1. Hope you are having fun with it.

    Next Steps:

I would like to ask you to do one single page of rough perspective where you are ensure that the vertical lines are perpendicular to the horizon lines and horizontal lines are parallel. Its important to understand WHY this is the case. Its because there is only one Vanishing point on the page.

    Hello KTHEARTIST,

    • Good job on completed the lesson 1 and hope you are doing good?

    • Good Job on superimposed lines and ghosting lines. Your lines are fairly neat and clean. Although i can see few waves in ghosting lines which should be avoided. It seems like you were going a bit for precision but at this point just focus on confidence and precision will come naturally.

    • I see you have put points when drawing planes and those lines are fairly straight and confident so it got better. Good job on ellipses.

    • It appears that your second round of drawing circle sometimes flows out of the plane so this can be made better again with ghosting method which im sure you already are doing. With more practice this will improve.

    • Your boxes are good to. Although in rough perspective boxes you should have drawn more boxes. But no matter. The next section is full of that.

    • Now the only proper criticism i have is of Rotated Boxes. Here firstly

      1. Each of those boxes should be tightly sitting next to each other as if there's only small space left between them.

      2. Plus make sure to rotate those boxes slightly as you move. For example: you have the middle box, below that box you have a slight rotation but again below that it has the same rotation. It only gives the impression that your box is more in the front. Remember, You will see less of the box's face as they move away from the center.

      3. The boxes also have huge distance between them in left side of the drawing.

    • Overall you have done really good job on lesson 1 on understanding what needs to be done.

    Next Steps:

I would ask you to do the rotated box exercise again. This is important because your next exercise would be the 250 box challenge and hence you should be clear about the box mechanics. Do the exercise again and really pay attention to the following:

    • The boxes should have very little space between them in all direction. Up, down, left and right.

    • As the boxes move away from center they should be rotated and moved. You'll see less of the box's face.

    Hello CJKENJI,

Draw a box lesson 1 was certainly hard so glad that you submitted your lesson 1.

Upon viewing your homework following are the things i have have noticed.

    • For Superimposed lines, well done. line are not wobbly but then again some of the lines do not overlap at all. You are really good at superimposing straight lines but the curved ones are the difficult ones right? in future when you practice superimposing do pay extra attention towards precision (which will come with practice.) Overall you followed all the rules that were mentioned for this activity so well done.

    • Here's what i have noticed in your homework which really is to be avoided in future of DAB. which is correction of your mistakes by drawing on top of it. i've noticed that almost all of your lines in ghosting lines and planes have some sort of correction done to it. This is highly discouraged. If there's a mistake then leave the mistake as it is and move on. Its advised to draw 2 or 3 times over elipses but not for planes and ghosting lines. They should be sharp and clear.

    • Good job on funnel exercise by cutting the ellipses in 2 symmetrical halves.

    • In Rough perspective boxes that are away from determined VP have their lines converge very far away from the vanishing point. Try to converge the lines going back to the vanishing point. (Note: Not request a revision but do pay attention to this as this is very important in the next exercise which is drawing 250 boxes. )

    • Good job on rotated boxes. That one is certainly difficult.

    • Overall very good work and happy to see you here.

    Next Steps:

Here are the revisions i would advise you to do before moving on since these mistakes should not be carried on to another level.

    • Draw just one page of Ghosted planes where you specificilly focus on not correcting your lines by drawing again on top of it. Put points of the planes and using ghosting method to draw the line by putting emphasis on confidence over accuracy. its okay to not be accurate at this level. Its expected. (Im purposely not requesting a revision on ghosting lines specifically since that would be covered in ghosting planes anyway. )

    hello LUCAENBY_JK,

Quite happy with your lesson 1 homework submission.

Although your lines are confident i see that in ghosting lines you have placed dots for reference but then the lines shoot way over the points on certain lines. Its expected to shoot over at ending points but for few lines you have started to draw lines way ahead of the points. Since its only for few lines i wont ask for revision but hence forth do pay attention to that.

Even in superimposed there's frawying on the end points. It is expected at this level but with practice pay attention for achieving accuracy.

(Edit): After discussing with Draw A box member's we found there were several instances where you redid your lines (its very subtle). To point it out:

    1. One of the bottom planes in ghosted planes.

    2. Few of the boxes on the right side in rough perspective.

Redoing lines for correcting mistakes is highly discouraged and hence just keep in mind to avoid it in the future.

Very happy with the ghosted planes, ellipses and boxes exercise. Confident and clear.

    Next Steps:

Start of with 250 Box challenge before heading on to lesson 2.

The Science of Deciding What You Should Draw

The Science of Deciding What You Should Draw

Right from when students hit the 50% rule early on in Lesson 0, they ask the same question - "What am I supposed to draw?"

It's not magic. We're made to think that when someone just whips off interesting things to draw, that they're gifted in a way that we are not. The problem isn't that we don't have ideas - it's that the ideas we have are so vague, they feel like nothing at all. In this course, we're going to look at how we can explore, pursue, and develop those fuzzy notions into something more concrete.
