Sometimes these lessons feel like they take forever, but we have to be patient with them. I've done some thinking on it and I believe it's because we hear the word "lesson" and think it's something to be done within 1-3 days max, when in reality the homework for lesson 1 alone spans over 16 pages, not including warmups!

Everyone proceeds at their own pace, and sometimes that pace is quite slow. For example: I've been working on Draw a Box stuff since early November and I haven't even hit box 30 of the 250 box challenge. Even then I'm still moving faster than others I've seen in the discord, so try not to get too hung up on how long it's taking you.

Also, only redo the specific ones that I mentioned, since the rest show that you grasped the concept well enough to add the exercise to your warmup pool! Just wanting to clarify since I have seen people interpret statements like my own as "redo the whole lesson" which is unnecessary and wastes time for you.

When you've redone them, simply post them to imgur in a gallery and link them to me here.

Pledging for 1 month on Patreon at the $5 tier gets you 1 credit, and allows you to store up to 2 credits. The higher tiers get you more credits and let you store more for longer, and the Patreon has things listed out in terms of what tier you should pledge to based on your pace and level.

Lesson 1, the 250 box challenge, Lesson 2, the 250 cylinder challenge, and 25 wheel challenge are all 1 credit a piece. Lessons 3-7, 25 texture challenge, and 100 treasure chest challenge are all 2 credits a piece.

Since there's a bit of a backlog, the 1 official critique per 14 days limit is more important than ever, and you'll have to wait for a third month's pledge to go through anyway before you'll be able to submit this for official critique.

Ah good I just wanted to be sure it had been resubmitted! In order to get future lessons/challenges officially critiqued you have to have all previous lessons/challenges officially approved. In other words, if you want to submit your 250 boxes for official crit then you'll have to get approved official crit for lesson 1. This is so that the official team has consistency with the advice you've received, since community critique can be a bit of a crapshoot sometimes.

    Superimposed lines

Pretty good start to the lesson! There's a bit of wiggling here, which tends to be a sign of low confidence in your lines. A tip that I like to use sometimes is where you do the line fast enough that you can't overthink it-like a samurai katana slash. It does carry the risk of increased arcing, but it might be something to try out in your warmups!

    Ghosted lines

Most of these are nice and straight, though they suffer from the same occasional wiggle. Definitely something that can be overcome with practice!

    Ghosted planes

Same wiggle issues here, but overall good job on these. You may need to sacrifice some of the accuracy you've been working on to deal with your confidence issues, but I have faith!

    Tables of Ellipses

Overall these are alright. You seem to do best with the thin ellipses, so maybe try some of those large wide ellipses. The lumpiness here can be worked through by ghosting until things feel natural and then almost closing your eyes as you draw the two loops. That way, you can't overthink and cause the ellipse to wiggle.

    Ellipses in Planes

Some of these ellipses are very lumpy, which tells me that you may not have ghosted as much as you needed to. The large ellipse motion isn't necessarily the most comfortable thing and does take some getting used to, but you definitely want to be practicing it for lesson 2.

    Funnels

Same issue with lumpiness, though you did a great job on keeping the ellipses in the middle of the funnels!

    Plotted Perspective

Not much to say here, you followed the directions and your boxes look lovely.

    Rough Perspective

Mostly the same notes from before about making sure that your lines are confident. Let me know if you need any additional guidance on getting the boxes to move towards the vanishing point.

An important side note: make sure that every single line is ghosted, including when you hatch a face to indicate its closeness!

    Rotated Boxes

You did pretty great with this one! There are a few missing lines but I know from experience that once you get to those last few boxes in the quadrant the whole thing is a bit messy and things get easily lost.

    Organic Perspective

While you technically have 3 pages here, the instructions called for 2 pages with three frames on each (6 frames in total) and you've only done two frames of work here (it looks like one of your photos was duplicated). That means that I do want to see one more page (3 more frames) of organic perspective before I can say you've truly completed the assignment. In the future do your best to make your work resemble the examples as closely as possible in terms of frame amounts and subject density (try to have the same amount of boxes or sausages or animals per page as the example).

Doing an extra page does give a great opportunity though! Your first page here does not have much rotation and while the second page does have more rotation it's still not quite enough in my book. So for your additional full page, make sure that the boxes twist and turn.

Also, you don't have a lot of overlapping boxes. I want at least a third of your boxes to overlap in your next three frames. Treat the boxes in front as semi-transparent and make sure to draw the whole box in the back. Your second page has an obscured box-that's what we want to avoid.

Once you finish that then reply to this comment and I'll make sure you get approved to continue on with the 250 box challenge!

    Next Steps:

1 additional page of organic perspective (3 frames worth of work)

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

While you have already received critique from a community member, I do want to point out that if you want official critique from Uncomfortable or one of the TAs, you'll need to resubmit this for official critique using your credits. If you don't care about official crits and just want to support what Uncomfy is doing here at DaB, then let me know and I'll go ahead and agree with ExtraBadCat's crit so that you can get your 250 box challenge badge ^u^

Just so you know, you will probably need to submit lesson 1 and get it approved on here in order to submit lesson 2 (I'm not totally sure how the prerequisite submission thing works) but if you let me know then I'll submit a filler comment to get the approvals needed for a badge!

Fortunately, you're only supposed to do the Rotated Boxes exercise once, so I'm going to go over everything one more time to mark this as completed! I will say that it is incredibly helpful if your imgur gallery is in order, but I've listed the assignments in order for chronology's sake.

    Superimposed lines

Overall these are pretty great, though I do see a bit of wobble and arcing in your straight lines. This is something that is fixed with confidence over time, and from the looks of your other assignments you seem to be doing alright in that department.

    Ghosted lines

Outside of a handful of little wiggles these are great! Same thing as above, worry about the confidence leading to a straight line before you worry about your accuracy, as worrying about accuracy is the most common source of line wiggles.

    Ghosted planes

These look pretty good, though don't forget to plot your points! Every corner of the plane should have a dot; the X will use the corner dots; the + that you do last will need their own dots. Any time you are doing a straight, ghosted line you will need a defined start and end point.

    Tables of ellipses

Your ellipses are a little bit squishy here, which typically means one of two things. You're either not trusting your ghosting (lack of confidence) or you're not used to the circular motion with your shoulder. I know I struggled with the latter, but if it's the former then you gotta just ghost more circles until the motion feels natural and then confidently do two loops.

    Ellipses in planes

These are a lot more confident than your tables of ellipses, though you still have a few wiggles. Again, keep ghosting until you feel that the motion is more natural and then confidently do it!

    Funnels

Same issues as your tables, though here we really want to see a variation in the width of the ellipses-thinner ellipses at the center of the funnel and wider ellipses at the ends of the funnel. I do think I want to see one more page of funnels from you, though that's not going to stop you from having this assignment marked as complete.

    Plotted Perspective

Not much to say here expect to point out the slightly distorted boxes that are really high up on the rightmost plotted perspective frame. See here for more information on distortion.

    Rough Perspective

I almost want to say that this exercise feels like you may have rushed through it? I do see some replotted dots-which is good (replot as many times as you need)-and some second attempts at lines-which is bad (commit to the first line you drew rather than attempting to fix your mistakes). You also forgot quite a few lines here which is easy to do when you're rushing. I think I want to see one more page of this as well, to make sure that you take your time with a page before moving on to 250 boxes.

    Rotated Boxes

Malo addressed the important stuff with the rotated boxes exercise so I'm not going to repeat them here. I will repeat my own comment from a second ago to be patient, ESPECIALLY when things hurt your head the way they're supposed to with the rotated boxes. You missed some lines here as well, and there's a box on the bottom left corner that isn't even a quadrilateral! If you do feel compelled to redo this, I would suggest to do just one quadrant, really taking your time to get things oriented. The tips Malo gave are super helpful for this proces.

    Organic Perspective

Your organic perspective is fairly good and follows the instructions to have the boxes get smaller as they go into the distance. Some additional planning may help to make them a little more "square" but overall they're good!

    Next Steps:

    1 page of funnels

    1 page of rough perspective

Optional: 1 quadrant of rotated boxes

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
