Hi Andpie
Thanks for this critique, I hope I can continue to improve and incorporate your feedback in the future of my learning path. It's quite dense and I will review it as I move on to 250 cylinders.

Hey
Definitely having a clear long-term goal. I'm on my third year now and reached L5 just recently. I've taken paus every now and then and did some other drawing courses. Remember the 50/50 rule. Also celebrate every little achievement. Don't make it a result oriented task, learn through the process as well and be happy even if you did just five minute of sketching.
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I think it clicked when I browsed a reference image for the lobster and shrimp. They have a shell (?) that wraps around the entire body, yet the demo divided them into 2 forms/planes (above and below)

Previously I would've probably drawn one contour line to reflect that exact shape.
Now let's see how we can tackle animals...
Hi

shrimp + lobster demo

I think I had a heureka moment nov-dec when I did the final wasp, just started cranking out forms and seeing them in the reference :)
Hey
It was sure late here when posting.
You're the teacher, I'm the student. So I do trust your judgement, not ever was it my intention to post accusations, although it might come out as that over text. My main critique was my impression of arbitrary lesson critiques. I hope this makes it more clear. I could do several more drawings but I can for sure tell that there's something which is stuck, somethings that's not clear how I should apply your feedback in insect constructions.
Look I work in programming too, so the concept of simplifying a problem, or building up small modules / forms step-by-step is understood. Yet I don't know where things are lacking here.
E.g. the peacock spider.

Correct, the eyes are definitely not that wide apart in the ref, but I didn't think it was that strict where things are placed.
I remember this clearly that I observed the reference and decided put the second pair of eyes further back to align with the cornering of the box (as in the reference), instead of putting it besides the two front ones. I thought this was a decision that's OK though. This could have been mitigated by making the first two eyes bigger in order to fill the entire front face of the spider - now it didn't happen but does that mean I don't understand construction?
For every line I'm watching the reference, sometimes making adjustment from that reference and having the freedom to interpret the image a bit - but not jeopardizing the actual elements of construction (whether it's a box, ellipse or the like underneath)
BIG thanks for your drawing btw. My immediate internal response though was "why isn't he making it boxy?" :) hehe. In comparison to my struggle I spent a lot of time making it look front-view and boxy - is that a waste of time in your opinion?
I'd be happy to do 10 more insect constructions, however right now it seems that I'm not able to apply the correct method.
I am determined to finish this course which I have a special relationship to (it what made me feel confident with drawing!) and I think I've subscribed for 2 years and want to continue. But if I don't know what I should be looking for, how can I possibly move forward? I'm happy to chat on Discord too.
PS
These are no way accusations again, I'd like to stress that. Thanks again for your time and hope you had a good flight. The amount of appreciation for this course is of course hidden behind my "negative" reply, but I can ensure you that this course has immensely made me a better artist, moving from 0 as in programmer's loose sketchy hand to actually draw forms that convey objects.
Hey
Im not sure if this is a joke or not. You seem to take this as a negative impact on my education since I don't submit fast enough. I'm spending a lot of time on this already. Each insect construction is preceded by numerous warmup / insect construction drawings. Building up forms upon forms to reach complexity is my main focus. Your feedback seems to become less valuable for each paragraph, a wall of text doesn't seem to help here - or is it possible to redraw on top to display your thoughts?
The peacock spider was a major investment to get that boxy/round front-view correct.
Another point of confusion is where I've observed inconsistencies in critiques and I'd like to understand why this is so.
Just a cherry-pick really
1)

Organic forms too pinched. Contour lines incomplete.
Uses contour lines on joints and other issues with not sticking to sausage method. Which you specifically said was incorrect to me in your earlier feedback.
Modified silhouette on the claw of lobster. Also on spider e.g.
Yet it's ok to move to L5.

A few pointers given, modifying silhouette of which I've understood is a major one and cannot be overlooked. Issues with sausage method also highlighted, still you decide it's OK to move on to L5 for this guy.
Thanks

3 images are scanned and one photo due to it being A3 size.
*Don't redraw silhouette, contour line over joints (where applicable and not too small).
How should I interpret that my other insects were not critiqued, or were they OK while the wasp was bad?
Is it ok to redraw the 4 insects?
Thanks
I think the problem is I don't know how to apply your feedback. Like when the legs gets so small and tiny, it's difficult to fit in that little intersection line for the joints.
Hello again

Please let me know if you have issues with the folder.
These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.
Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
