    Hello,

Thank you for all the feedbacks.

I think I got caught on trying different plants structures and took the construction as a challenge and forgot a bit what was part of construction steps and what was considered optional details. I should have taken more time and read again the lesson materials.

I'll try my best to take into account what you pointed out in my future warmups and slow down my pace for L4 homeworks.

    Have a nice day,

    Em'

    Ah ah!

I thought of the dragon blood tree as a reference to turn into a dragon.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracaena_cinnabari

Apparently, this tree can grow up to 12m high, so definitely on the terrifying side…

Oh, I know, I’ll give a shot at drawing a baby tree dragon. There the cute one. I don’t know any baby animal that’s not cute.

    Thanks for the idea ;)

    Hello,

    Thank you for the feedbacks.

I'm taking notes of all you pointed out and do my best to work on them.

Regarding the arrows, I realized drawing the 2nd curved line at once is not a good idea, as it's very hard at this point to maintain smoothness and accuracy at the same time. I will build them section by section instead.

Still have to improve on adding line weight on curved ones.

As for the textures, I noticed myself I had a hard time distinguishing form and cast shadows, so I hope more practice will definitely help.

As you mentioned, form intersections was really a struggle for me so I gave it a try and moved on, aiming for improvement in the future.

I was not sure about my sausages floating were a good thing for the organic intersections, so thank you for pointing this out.

By the way, I'm proud of my improvement about not grinding and moving on no matter how my submission look like. Focusing on learning and on the process.

    Have a nice day!

    Em'

    Oh very nice!

I don't know if I'd ride that kind of bug, but apparently it's not bugging the gnome.

Is it done digitally or tradi?

    Hello,

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't check the website for a while.

I must admit how much effort and dedication redoing the whole lesson 1 homework while I asked only to provide the missing required pages.

As the summer promptathlon is currently running, I will check and get back to you as soon as possible. What about joining it in the meantime ?

    Hello,

Congratulations on completing lesson 1 homework.

I'll take a look at your work and I hope it will be helpful.

I'm new to giving feedbacks, so feel free to ask for clarification if anything I wrote is unclear.

    Lines

    Superimposed lines

There is almost no fraying at beginning, showing you took time to put your pen on the starting dot.

You followed the assignment with variety of line length, straight and curved ones.

There is a bit of fraying at the end, but what’s the most annoying is wobbling, and you tried to correct the trajectory. Do try avoid this. Each mark should have a consistent trajectory. Ghost before and let the mark be once you put the pen on paper. You want to prioritize confidence over accuracy.

    Ghosted lines

Good job on plotting before and crossing them over the page, mixing shorter and longer lines.

Overall, your marks aren’t far away from the plots. There is a bit of overshooting and some undershooting. Keep in mind it’s better to overshoot than undershoot.

Some lines are arc’ing a bit.

It might be of drawing from elbow instead of shoulder.

Try taking time to rotate paper, and orientate the page so it’s comfortable for you. Also your posture could also help on this.

    Ghosted planes

Good job on occupying most of the space on the 2 pages.

Confident marks and better than on the previous exercice, so it shows progress. Still some arc’ing and undershooting, but it’s okay and will get better with practice.

You plotted the corners, which is good.

It seems you didn’t plot for the diagonals. It was mentioned in the assignments.

Note that a lot of them are rectangle-shape, more asymmetric shapes would have been cherry on top.

    Ellipses

    Table of ellipses

Overall good attempt. Your ellipses are close to each other, and you drew through them as asked.

Some are a bit wobbly and some more egg-shaped than ellipses. As for straight marks, we're aiming for confidence over accuracy. It’s better to be out of the frame or not touching edges than to try to fit ellipses at all cost despite the shape, smooth and confident marks.

    Ellipses in planes

Overall, it’s a good attempt and shows progress. As for the tables, trying to get the ellipse in the plane at all cost affect its shape and smoothness. I can see on the 2nd page, you drew only 2 times through and they look more confident. It’s way better and I guess you got the motion for the 2nd page.

    Funnels

Good point on drawing them close to each other and for attempting to increase the size as the ellipses get far away from the center.

Some ellipses are not aligned with the others in the same funnels, some have an irregular shape. I won’t tell again about confidence and accuracy.

Do include ellipses in your future warmup and it will be okay.

    Boxes

    Plotted perspective

Solid attempt showing you understood the materials and followed correctly the instructions.

Adding line weight to the box silhouette was optional at this point. I’d suggest to include this further in the next challenge, as it’s a very good way to practice ghosting and straight marks making.

    Rough perspective

Overall I don’t see any big converging issues, it seems you pretty got it. Plotted, drew through the box.

You have extended the lines a bit too far, it was enough extending them to the horizon line.

With a single VP, the verticals should be all parallel together, as for the horizontals. Taking your frames as reference could have helped on this.

Also, except for some, the box look a bit same-ish and with little overlapping. Experimenting with different shapes and sizes is a good way to challenge yourself and be sure you understand the materials. Try keeping this in mind for the next challenge.

    Rotated boxes

    Good attempt at this one.

All the boxes are close to each other and seem rotated compared to the ones next to them, you drew through them and hatched the inner sides as asked The box on the lines look good. The ones on the outside of the corners seem a bit off to me (or maybe the rotation rate is different from the lesson material).

    Organic perspective

Solid attempt. On both pages, you made them follow the curved lines and increased size, giving the feeling they are coming closer to the viewer.

Overall, a solid submission. I can see progress in mark making over the exercices, they are more confident and straight.

    Basics of perspective seem understood.

    I consider the lesson complete.

Be sure to include lesson 1 exercices in your future warmup.

    Next Steps:

250 box challenge is next, once you get 2 agrees from others

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

    Hello there,

It’s been almost 2 months since you submitted lesson 1 and no review yet! I’ll give it a try, hoping that it will help.

First of all, congratulations for going through lesson 1. It's a lot of materials to read, watch and try to understand.

You completed most of the homework assignments (even though some parts are missing), it takes dedication.

I’m not sure you went through lesson 0? It seems you used pencil to do the homework, and lesson 0 explains very well to use ink, and why. Feel free to ask for alternatives on the discord channel or on the website if you’re having difficulties to get fine liners nearby, for example. Brands are different from a country to another, but I’m sure it’s possible to find appropriate pens.

When not done with recommended tools, I’m not sure the rest of the homework would be reviewed at all by others. It’s too bad to submit and never get helpful feedbacks to improve and get out the most of the course.

    Edit:

I was pointed out it could be ballpoint pen and not pencil. Ballpoint is OK for lesson 1, but not for further lessons. It is hard to distinguish as the photos are a bit blurry.

Could it be possible to focus while taking pictures of your homework? Daylight also helps a lot getting good quality photos. It would be a great help on assessing your work.

    End of edit.

Despite this fact, I’ll try to look over your submission and offer feedbacks regarding lesson 1 materials and goals.

    Lines

    Super imposed lines

There are 3 photos, but the first 2 look like it’s the same page

Did you drawn on every mark 8 times, like requested in the homework instructions?

On the first page, il seems the longer one at bottom are just lines made with a ruler.

Otherwise, on the ones I can see, there is little fraying at the beginning, which is good.

On some lines, it seems like you tried to correct the trajectory to meet the end plot, creating an ark. Do try to avoid this.

Lesson 1 explains to focus on confidence over accuracy. It’s better to have a straight confident mark not going through the end plot than a curved mark connecting the dots. Accuracy would come with mileage.

    Ghosted lines

Lines are wobbly as you tried to connect the dots. Focus confidence over accuracy at this point of the course.

    Ghosted planes

Good point on plotting before drawing. Maybe try plotting smaller, so they are kind of swallowed by your lines when you draw them. It is asked to plot for the diagonals as well, which is something you forgot. Some diagonals are missing on most of the planes of the second page.

Same for lines as for ghosted lines: you prioritized accuracy over confidence.

    Ellipses

    Ellipses in planes

It was indicated to reuse the 2 pages of ghosted planes you did earlier. You did 2 more pages apparently. Ellipses are wobbly and in some you drew too many times over the same ellipse. It’s hard to distinguish the shape.?Try to stick to the same number (2 to 4 according to lesson material).

    Tables of ellipses

Same as ellipses in planes about accuracy. A lot of issues: different sizes and orientation within the same frame, they are not next to each other.

I assume that you used pencil, according to the first page, middle and bottom. It seems you erased the first tries ?

If so, it is against the lesson1 instructions to use ink.

    Funnels

They look better than on the tables: close to each other in the same funnel. They are going a bit twisty, but your original lines of funnels aren’t perpendicular, so it’s probably expected the ellipses follow the direction.

    Boxes

    Plotted perspective

There is only 2 frames visible, as the homework instructions asked for 3 on the same page.

I can see you tried to do the exercices, but the vertical lines of your boxes aren’t vertical. This one was supposed to be while using a ruler. Some lines seem curved.

It’s hard to tell if you understood the idea of 2 VP.

    Rough perspective

I can see only 2 frames for this exercice. It was asked to do 2 pages filled with 3 frames. I don’t know if you did the 3 of them and had an issue while taking the pictures?

The photos are a bit blurred, I’m sorry I can’t evaluate correctly.

    Rotated boxes

Good job on trying this one. It is complicated and beginners are expected to fail on this one.

Good point on plotting before drawing.

About the less good points: you didn’t drawn through the boxes, though, as it was asked in the assignments. Some of the box don’t seem rotated.

You can check again the instructions, written and video, there are a lot of informations and tips to understand. But the rotation of boxes will be practiced a lot in the 250 box challenge coming after lesson1 anyway.

    Organic perspective

You made 2 pages of the exercice, but it was asked to do 2 pages with 3 frames, just like the other perspective exercices.

I’ll take a look on what you did.

Good job on varying the size, making them small to big, giving the feeling that they are following the curved line.

On the first page, at the far top right, the last box seem smaller, though. Or maybe it’s me having a hard time seing the curved line.

On the second page, there is on lonely small box at the far right, and then bigger ones. I’m not sure I’m seeing the curved line correctly.

I can see you tried to rotate some of them. It would have been nice to try to rotate more, and vary more the shapes of the boxes. They look a bit all same-ish.

    Next Steps:

Please use recommented tools indicated in lesson 0.

Also, could you provide at least the requested amount of homework on the boxes section.

I won't ask to redo all the homework of lesson 1 with ink, but it could be a big no go for further lessons if done with pencil.

Staedtler Pigment Liners

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
