Hello, I checked the pictures and it's great. However I'm not too sure if you just zoomed in or you did draw the extra boxes, mainly because a lot of the boxes are similar. Still, I'd like to believe that the boxes are just similar and you did the task accordingly so this will mark the lesson as complete. If you did not actually do it, I would advise you do since it's in ur best interest but I cannot force you.

But on a good note, congratulations on completing Lesson 1. Now the next steps for you is to do the 250 box challenge. It's quite a doozy but even I, a major procrastinator, managed to finish at last. So with perseverance you can complete that challenge as well. Good luck!!

Edit: Forgot to press the mark complete button so now it thinks u need a revision. So please reply to this msg so that I can mark your work complete

Hello, thank you for the critique ????.

I'm truly grateful for it and I'll keep all of what you said in mind.

Also, I forgot to say this but when I reached box 186 I started using my sketchbook which is a3 paper bcs I ran out of a4 printer paper. So bcs the sketchbook was double the size, I decided to do double the boxes. It might look smaller on photo but the boxes are all pretty much the same reasonable size. However I will try to experiment with different sizes bcs most of my boxes were the same.

Once again thank you for your input, it means a lot ????

Good job on the revisions. There are still a few errors but that's alright. One thing I would like to point out tho is that there is a significant amount of empty space in the bottom part of your ellipses in planes exercise and bcs of that, you can't rlly say you did 1 whole page of the exercise so I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to add more tables and ellipses in the page so as to get the full use out of the revision. Also keep in mind when drawing those extra boxes that you want the ellipses touching the sides of the planes :)

you need to wait until it is marked as complete and then you can finally start. JUst think of this waiting period as a well deserved break rn :)

Also no problem, I am always happy to help :> Keep up the good work and I am glad be of help to you

Great! Now it more clear what mistakes were made, dont worry abt accuracy, the purpose of the exercise is to enable us to rlly think abt our next move more critically. You are ready to move to the 250 box challenge. And after completing that, try doing the rough perspective, rotated box, and organic perspective again. I did it just recently after completing the challenge and its a good way to see the improvement you have made. Good luck on the 250 box challenge!! Also to get the lesson marked as complete, 2 other ppl need to agree to this post so quickest way to do that is to ask ppl on discord to review it and see if they agree with it

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 box challenge but don't forget to do warm up! Good luck!!

Hey congratz on finishing lesson 1! Let's get straight into the critique so you can hopefully get something out of it.

    Super Imposed Lines

Good job, only one end of the line had fraying. However, in the warm ups try to do a lot more different lengths of lines like extremely short ones and also try more curvy lines as well.

    Ghosted lines

A few of them are confident, a few of them are wobbly. Remember to ghost the lines until your absolutely confident that you can draw a decent line. Also, there were a lot of empty space that could have been used up and most of the lines were pretty much the same length. Next time in the warm ups, try to draw more line to fill up the entire page and add more variety to the length of those lines.

Ghosted planes and Ellipses in Planes

The lines in the ghosted planes were confident most of the times, good job. The shapes of said planes were almost the same in length and height. Try to add more taller but skinny planes and wider but shorter plane in the warm ups. And try some different shapes as well, there are a lot of different quadrilaterals.

The ellipses in planes were also decent. The ellipses were smooth and confident most of the times, however, it doesn't look like there was much of an attempt to make the ellipses to touch the sides of the planes (which is ultimately the goal here). Next time you do the make sure it TOUCHES all 4 sides of the plane. Dont overshot it or undershoot it either. You are allowed to make mistakes here and there but it just seems like you just drew and ellipses inside a box without any effort to make them touch the sides.

    Table of ellipses

Once again, the ellipses are touch the sides as it is meant to. Some are but I am not too sure if it was an intentional effort or that it happened simple bcs the space left was to small to not touch the borders. It seems to be pointing more towards the latter because when there is a good amount of space , the ellipses dont touch the border at all. Once again you need to touch the borders. The ellipses need to touch the sides of the frame and the sides of the ellipses around it. Please look at the video and text regarding this exercise so you clearly understand what exactly needs to be done.

    Funnels

Good job here, most of the ellipse are touching the border and are drawn closely to each other. I also see that you drew your ellipses more than 2-3 times which is a no no. Also, there's a ton of mpty space that could be filled up with smaller funnels.

Avoid all the errors I have mentioned when doing the warm ups.

    Plotted perspective

Excellent work here, you followed the instructions perfectly.

    ROugh perspective

The lines were very wobbly in the one, please dont forget to ghost each and every line in this exercise.

Also, remember that these boxes are meant to be in 1 point perspective, therefore, the other 2 sets of lines should be parallel to each other (so the vertical sets of line and horizontal sets of lines should be parallel).

    Rotated box

The furthest boxes are far too foreshortened and almost difficult to see because of how tiny it is. But it is rotated alright, I would just advise that you make the boxes that are furthest away a lil bit less foreshortened later in the warm ups. Also the bottom right quarter of the boxes is way more foreshortened than the others, giving it this "squashed effect". SO try and avoid that later on.

    Organic perspective

In the first page, the boxes didn't rlly have that much change in shape but the seond page did so thats some improvement right there. Good job here.

Overall, you did retty good, but you seem to not understand the ellipses exercises well so I am afraid I am going to have you redo the exercise. Please read AND watch the vid and text on drawabox before you start the exercises.

    Next Steps:

    • Do 1 page of the table of ellipses exercise

    • Do 1 page of the ellipses in planes exercise

Look through the text and video of both the exercises on drawabox and also remember to make sure the ellipses touch the borders. And try and avoid any errors I have pointed in this critique

I guess that makes sense. since I have finished the 250 box challeng and i am waiting to be critiqued shall I just focus on the 50/50 rule and draw for fun?

    6:36 PM, Wednesday August 2nd 2023

Hello!! Just checked your revision and its very good and yes when asked to do revisions you should post the picture as well so we can see if it's done correctly. Also for the rough perspective one, I had noticed that most of the lines were pointed at the horizontal line rather than the vanishing point but I was not sure whether it was just a mistake because most students usually dont get the lines exactly to the vanishing point. BUt since that is the case, you should also redo the exercise because to get the most out of the exercise you need to do the exercise with the goal of the boxes pointing toward the vanishing point and you also need to plot the lines immediately after so you can see the mistakes you made clearly. So, please do 1 page of the rough perspective exercise and reply back with the picture :)

And b4 you start the exercise, look at the vid and text on the exercise in drawabox to get a clear understanding of what needs to be done.

    Next Steps:

do 1 page of the rough perspective exercise and make sure to do several warm ups of it in the future.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

    Hello there :)

Congratz on finishing lesson 1, you pushed through and persevered! Lemme start the critique so something can be learned from this :)

    Super Imposed Lines

Excellent work! The fraying was kept to one end of the lineand there was a decent amount of variation in both the length of the lines and the curves.

    Ghosted lines

Good job! The lines were smooth and confident. Only thing to complain about would be the amount of space on the paper left unused. Remember to always use up any available space left on the paper :)

Ghosted planes and Ellipses in Planes

For the ghosted planes, the lines were smooth, confident and also accurate (which is an added bonus!). There were also a good amount of variety in the planes and you used up all the space on the paper. Excellent work!

The ellipse in planes were also very good, however, they were drawn numerous times instead of only 2-3 times. Another thing I noticed is that a lot of the ellipses were diagonally. For example, there was a square plane and rather than drawing the ellipse vertically, it was drawn diagonally. This results in the ellipse not touching the 4 sides of the planes but only the corner of the planes. So next time you practice this exercise, remember that the goal it to touch all the 4 sides of the plane and should be drawn only 2-3 times.

    Table of ellipses

A job well done! There is a good amount of variety in the ellipses and most of the ellipses touched the border. Only complaint would be that the ellipses were drawn more than 2-3 times which is a no no. But you practice drawing it 2-3 times in the warm ups. I would also suggest drawing larger ellipses to also get the hang of it.

    Funnels

Good job in this one, there was a lot of variety in the sizes and there was an effort in staying within th boundaries. Once again, I have noticed that the ellipses were drawn more than 2-3 times so please focus a lot on that because you seem to struggle with it. Another thing was the amount of space left unused on the paper. You could draw a lot of smaller funnels in the areas between the bigger funnels. So just to get the full use out of the exercise, zyou need to add more funnels to that paper to fill up th empty space.

    Plotted Perspective

Excellent work. The boxes were drawn and plotted perfectly. However there were a lot of excess space on the page that could have been used up. So during your warm ups, make sure to make the frames big enough that only a tiny with of space is left.

    Rough Perspective

Magnificent job, you did the exercise well. The lines were smooth and confidentand you were very close to the vanishing point.

    Rotated boxes

Yet another job well done. Not much to say on this, The top left quarter was more foreshortened than the rest and so it looked more "squashed".

    Organic perspectve

Great job!! NOt much to say here about this. erhaps in the warm ups you could make the box at one end evensmaller and the other end larger to give a more exaggerated effect.

Overall you did an incredible job on lesson 1. I think you are ready to move on to the 250 box challenge, however you need to draw more funnels on the original page so that you can make full use out of that exercise. Also try to avoid the mistakes I pointed out in the critique regarding the ellipses. Don't draw your ellipses more than 2-3 times. After this, submit the updated funnel page here and then you can move on to the 250 box challenge :)

    Next Steps:

Add more funnels to the funnel page so as to not leave out any unused space, then reply back with the updated page.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
