    Thank you! :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this out!! I really appreciate it. The rotated boxes and the rough perspective exercises were the hardest for me by far, and it was nice to revisit them. Last time I went through lesson 1 I never did the rough perspective as a warm up, so this time around I'll try to include them a lot more.

I'll also be sure to upload higher res pictures next time! Sorry for the poor quality!

Thank you! I will keep that in mind.

Hello, I wanted to let you know that I made a mistake on the funnels part! You did it just like the exercise said to do it, so don't worry about doing another page of funnels. Sorry about that.

Hello! Your welcome!! I'm glad digital works for you. Either way you go about this, you'll be improving your art skills in the end through consistent practice :) The soreness should get better too, after a while. I started only recently, so It was a struggle to draw from my shoulder for long periods of time. It has got a little better though. Anyways, I just wanted to say, keep it up and good luck!!

Hi there, I'll be giving you feedback to the best of my ability. I hope this helps you out! First, congratulations on finishing Lesson 1!

    LINES:

There's a lot of wobble in your lines, especially when looking at your super imposed page. Remember to draw from your shoulder. Speed can help improve the smoothness of your lines as well, so experiment with different levels of speed to achieve a more confident line! Overall, prioritize line confidence over perfect accuracy right now. With more practice your accuracy will improve naturally. I can also see that your lines do get smoother over time so good job on that!

    ELLIPSES:

I think you have nice ellipses. It seems like you struggled a little with the ellipses in planes. The ellipse is supposed to touch all 4 of the points that bisect each of the 4 sides (sorry if this doesn't make sense what I'm describing. If you need clarification watch the video for ellipses in planes because he describes all this better than me haha). Some of your ellipses miss touching several of these points and take on a slanted shape. Try to make an effort to touch all of the points, even if your ellipse crosses out of the boundaries. Keep in mind your still aiming for confident strokes.

    BOXES:

Great job getting through these. The boxes section, in my opinion, is the hardest out of the three (especially rotated boxes).

Most of your perspective mistakes will improve with practice, so I won't go too in depth. Whenever you get confused with where the lines go, for example, in your organic perspective page, refer back to what the boxes the plotted perspective exercise looked like. Also, remember to keep your height lines perpendicular to the horizon, and your width lines parallel to the horizon.

    FINAL THOUGHTS:

Over all, good job. I saw a lot of growth! Make sure that whenever you get ready to draw, dedicate 10-15 minutes to practicing one of the homework assignments above as your warm up.

    Next Steps:

Complete one more page of Ellipses in Planes and make the ellipse more fitting to the box (watch the video on this if you can).

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello there! I'll be giving you some feedback on your work. I'm a beginner myself, so apologies in advance if my wording isn't clear or if I make some mistakes.

    LINES:

Very smooth lines! You made a clear effort to make each stroke in your Super Imposed page begin from the same starting point. There is fraying at the ends, but that's to be expected at this stage. Continue to practice these skills during your warm ups and keep a clear goal in mind when doing these. Eventually the fraying will diminish a bit. For your ghosted lines, you consistently hit the first dot and either overshot or very closely miss the second. Try to hit that second dot by stopping just before you reach the point. You could maybe even try to lower your speed just slightly to gain more control (not too slow that it causes wobble).

    ELLIPSES

You have great ellipses. Just remember to draw from your shoulder, even when doing tiny ellipses. Your strokes are over all very confident. From here, I feel you should focus on tightening up your strokes and try your best to stay within the borders (keep your ellipses from overlapping with eachother, etc). However, be careful not to focus too heavily on this and end up warping your ellipses to keep within the border.

    BOXES

Clean boxes. You have a few perspective mistakes but your perspective will improve when you tackle the 250 box challenge. I suppose one thing you should keep in mind is that your rotated box assignment lacked a spherical shape in it's end project. This is common though, this assignment isn't meant to be something easy. If you'd like to challenge yourself, after you finish the 250 box challenge, maybe go back to this and see how your understanding has changed by attempting rotated boxes again! This is, of course, optional.

    CLOSING THOUGHTS

Great job. I think you showed good progress here and are ready to move on. Good luck! Also, if you have time, I'd appreciate it if you shot a critique or an agree on my assignment. Have a great day :)

    Next Steps:

    1. Spend 10 - 15 minutes before every drawing session to practice one of these homework exercises you did here.

    2. Tackle the 250 box challenge

Hi! Congratulations on finishing lesson one! You did well and I can see the effort you put into these :) I'll be giving you critique on your pages here.

    Lines:

I looked over your superimposed lines page and first off, you did well to make each line start from the same point, so good job on that. However, as you continue to the right of your page, the lines start to wiggle and fray. Though fraying is expected at this stage and will improve with further practice (during your warm ups) the wobble is a sign that you either went too slow or forgot to draw from your shoulder. When drawing out your lines, it's important to remember to make smooth confident strokes, which is achieved by speed, and using your shoulder's pivot.

However, your lines in the ghosted section were great! You're almost there to connecting both dots consistently so keep it up.

    Ellipses:

Your ellipses are smooth and confident, good job. From here, visualize keeping your ellipses within the boarders presented. With more practice this will be easer. However, you had a mistake in your funnels assignment. You drew an ellipse in the center of the funnel, split by the shorter, horizontal line. That shorter middle line somewhat acts as an ellipse itself when turned on it's side. I'm sorry if I'm not explaining this well, but think of looking straight at a disc's edge so that it appears to be a flat line. What you were supposed to do is draw ellipses on either side of that line. Other than than that, everything else looked okay.

    Boxes

I won’t criticize your perspective too heavily because you will gain a better understanding of perspective after the 250 box challenge. What I will say is that, maybe rewatch some of the lesson videos on boxes to get a better feel for where the lines should be placed. Your boxes in the Organic Perspective assignment, though they did rotate, felt a bit warped in places. Generally, keep in mind that the width lines lay parallel to the horizon line and height lines lay perpendicular to it (Again, this will be improved after the 250 box challenge).

*All in all, great work, I'll be putting what I'd like you to do next below.

    Next Steps:

    1. I'd like you to do 1 more page of the Super imposed lines assignment and really try to keep your lines straight.

    2. I'd also like you to do 1 more page of the Funnels assignment and follow the directions more closely (drawing the ellipses on either side of the short middle line divider).

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Thank you so much! And also, thank you for this course :) I'll keep working on the 250 box challenge and watch the updated videos when they're finished.

Wow man!! That looks really nice! I can see the areas where you went about using the lessons to plot where items in the space would look like :) It's amazing how learning the fundamentals can make drawing backgrounds easier. By the way, good luck when you eventually start the 250 box challenge. I've started it today and I'm amazed at how I'm able to spot my mistakes easier.

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
