Hello, I will critique your lesson 1 homework.

    Lines

You have a bit of fraying on both ends of your superimposed lines, it looks like you correct this later. Some of your lines have a bit of wobble, but you will gain more confidence in your lines with practice!

    Ellipses

Your first table of ellipses aren't drawn over, but I see they improve a lot in your next table.

For your funnels exercise, some of your ellipses appear to be tilting in relation to the minor axis (for example the top right corner). Aim to have the ellipses perpendicular to the minor axis, splitting the ellipse in half evenly.

    Boxes

Very well done on your box exercises! Looks like you understand the general concepts well.

Overall, great job on your homework. I wish you luck on your art journey!

    Next Steps:

I suggest doing a page of the ghosted lines exercise for your line confidence. Then move on to the 250 box challenge!

Hello, I will be critiquing your homework!

    Lines

Your lines increase in confidence as you continue your exercises, well done! As you mentioned you repeat your lines in some of your exercises, you should avoid this. Commit to a single line and move on as if it was correct. You will get better with practice!

    Ellipses

Your ellipses look very good! There is little overlap and they are drawn in confidence.

    Boxes

Well done on your box exercises, it seems you understand to concepts of the lessons. Some of your boxes in the organic perspective exercise appear to be squished. This can happen when one of the angles of the corner that is closest to the viewer is less than 90 degrees, it gives a very exaggerated perspective. If this is confusing, do not worry, you will get more practice as you draw more boxes and I think you will understand what I mean :)

Very good job on completing your lesson one homework, it's a huge accomplishment!

    Next Steps:

I suggest you try the Organic Perspective exercise again, and be sure to not repeat your lines. Then move on to the 250 box challenge!

Hello, I will be critiquing your lesson one homework.

    Lines

Your lines look great, they are drawn with confidence and there is little fraying at the ends. Not much to critique here, good job.

    Ellipses

Your ellipses look good as well, very nice job on the funnels exercise. The accuracy of your ellipses will continue to improve with practice.

    Boxes

And again, your boxes look great, you seem to have a good grasp on perspective. It looks like you've added line weight to your organic perspective boxes. Try to only add additional line-weight where lines overlap, rather than the entire line. Additionally, you should use the ghosting method to ensure that your lines are straight and confident, or you will be covering your initial lines with less confident marks.

Congratulations on completing your first homework, well done!

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 Box challenge!

Hello, I will be critiquing your lesson one homework :)

    Lines

Your superimposed lines look good, there is minimal fraying at the ends. Some of your lines are still wobbly but this will improve with more practice. In the box exercises you should avoid drawing over your lines, even if they are off.

    Ellipses

Your table of ellipses seems rushed, make sure you are drawing over your ellipses 2-3 times over. For your funnels be sure to pay attention to the minor axis, aim to divide the ellipses evenly in half. Generally your accuracy seems to be improving so great job on that.

    Boxes

Your box exercises look good, you seem to have a good grasp on the concepts of the exercises. Just note that you should not repeat over your lines, commit to a single line, and move on as if it is correct.

Very nice work on completing your lesson one assignment! Good luck!

    Next Steps:

You should try the Organic Perspective exercise again without repeating over your lines, then move on to the 250 box challenge!

Hello, I will be critiquing your lesson 1 homework.

    Lines

Your lines begin a bit wobbly, but I can see your line confidence greatly improves as you get to the ghosted planes exercise. Great job on that! In some of your boxes, you have redrawn over your lines for correction. Even if your initial line is off, you should avoid repeating lines and simply move on as if it correct. You will continue to get practice with the trajectory of your lines as you do more exercises :)

    Ellipses

Your ellipses look great! They are drawn confidently and there is minimal overlap in your ellipses table. Well done! For your funnels exercise some of your ellipses are not completely aligned with the minor axis. Aim to have the minor axis cut the ellipses in half.

    Boxes

Overall your boxes look good, and they are drawn through as they should be. As mentioned previously, avoid repeating your lines. It seems you have a strong grasp on the concepts though, very well done!

    Next Steps:

I suggest trying the Organic Perspective exercise again without repeating over your lines. Then you should move on to the 250 box challenge!

Hello, thank you for taking the time to write this critique. You are correct about one of my funnels, I hadn't measured when I was creating the guidelines and my line was not centered between the curves. Again, thank you for the critique

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
