hi
congrats in finishing lesson 1. i'm winter and i'll be offering you critique on the exercises of this part.
lines
starting with the superimposed lines, your attempt clearly shows confident mark making which will continue to improve over time with practice. one thing to note is fraying is expected towards the end but it needs to be minimal at the starting point.
in the ghosted lines section arching/curving is a common occurrence. this can be lessened by rotating your page and also ghosting in the opposite direction (of an arch).
line quality is looking better with the ghosted planes. even though there's still some arching, this will also improve with the technique mentioned above and practice.
ellipses
tables of ellipses look snug and have even forms, nice. what's standing out however is the multiple passes to draw an ellipse. it's recommended to go over 2-3 times at most to form an ellipse. plus you can ghost as many times as you want in the planning stage (no actual contact with the paper).
the funnels turned out quite well with snuggly placed ellipses mostly aligned with the minor axis. again, no more than 2-3 passes to draw the ellipse.
same with ellipses in planes, no more than three passes. besides, some ellipses look even and have nice shapes. others however, got slightly deformed as you tried to make them touch the four edges of the planes. it is a common misconception in this section. what's the main focus needs to be is, drawing a nice and even elliptical form even if it doesn't make contact with the edges.
boxes
in plotted perspective, the tables are missing. while i understand trying to complete hw as fast as possible, things like rushing and not paying attention or following instructions, will only hold you back in the long run. so, i'd recommend, take your time, revisit this section and redo it. by the way, this is the only part of lesson 1 where the full excercise can be done with a ruler/ straight edge, even the hatch lines. so, keep them evenly spaced and turn out more neat.
rough perspective is one of the complex exercises to tackle, so i'd say, not a bad attempt. a few horizontal lines are not parallel to the horizon and there are quite a few wobbly lines. that is to say you will be getting better at those with further practice. also, only add line weight on the outer lines, avoid the inside of a box.
now for the rotated boxes you're utilising the page properly which is good. the spacing of the boxes is also looking pretty good. somethings to point out is that some boxes on the outer corners don't have much rotation to them and lines are looking scratchy. line weight works better when you add them a bit startegically and not add them on all sides/ boxes. hatching can also get some refining.
the organic perspective section is a fairly good attempt and i can see that you already have a good grasp of the 3D space. something i need to point out is that, the line weight is present almost everywhere (in the second page) and you seem to be drawing over lines. however, with more and more practice in the future, you will become more strategic with how you place the line-weight and line variations.
overall, you seem to be doing good for the most part with demonstrating a confident effort. these exercises will become part of warm up routine, so you will only be getting better over time. that being said, i recommend you give plotted perspective another shot before moving on to the next phase which is the 250 boxes challenge.

hi
congrats on completing lesson 1. i'll be offering you critic on the submission.
lines
superimposed lines: your lines have minimal fraying at the starting point so nice job on it. there isn't much wobbliness which is also nice. over time with practice the slight curves apparent on some of the lines will disappear.
ghosted lines: nice attempt! some of the lines have a bit of an arching so, to avoid this try to ghost in the opposite direction (of the arch).
ghosted planes: some of the lines here are a bit wobbly and once again, have some arching. try to rotate your page and also ghost in the opposite direction.
ellipses
tables of ellipses: the ellipses are snugly placed which is great. some of these however, turned out uneven and out of shape.
ellipses in planes: you seem to have gone over with three passes on most of the ellipses but try to go over twice to keep things neat and evenly. another thing is, to aim for an even, elliptical form rather than having the ellipse touch all four edges of the planes (this results in unevenness).
funnels: ellipses here have mostly an even shape, are aligned with the minor axis, and placed quite snugly. well done. one thing to nitpick is, avoid going over an ellipse with more than two passes.
boxes
plotted perspective: first thing, hatching is alright, cross hatching is not. secondly, there needs to be 4-5 boxes in each frame but you added three. lastly, the contour line or line-weight is considerably extreme here. you need to use the same pen you're using to initially draw the box (not a thicker felt tip one) and only add line-weight on the outer lines.
rough perspective: the horizontal lines are mostly parallel to the horizon, except some inner corner lines throwing it of a little. same for the vertical lines, which are mostly perpendicular to the horizon. the line quality will get better eventually with practice.
rotated boxes: not a bad attempt. to begin with, the four 90 degree squares on the ends of the two axis lines are missing. then the boxes on the farthest corners are half-drawn. the lines turned out messy due to drawing over them, which might've caused difficulty in placing the next box. and the shapes of the boxes also became more and more rectangular and a bit deformed.
organic perspective: starting with an initial Y is quite a useful method of approaching this exercise and plan out the lines with dots (ghosting method). besides, some of the boxes have a tappered shape instead of being square or rectangular. a reminder, extreme angles are not necessary on this section so try going for basic ones and simpler rotations with mostly 3 visible planes.
overall, i'd say you did well for most of the exercises. these will become part of warmup as you move forward with upcoming challenges and hw lessons. so, there will be plenty of room for practice and improvement. good luck on the journey!
Next Steps:
250 box challenge.
hello,
congrats on finishing lesson 1.
i'll be offering critics on your hw exercises.
lines
superimposed lines: most of your lines have quite a bit of wobbliness. so, on this section, rotating the paper will lead to better results. also your lines mostly have fraying towards the end rather than the starting point, which is good. on the first page, however, you left some empty space. i recommend adding a few more lines so it looks complete.
ghosted lines: planning is essential in this part, as well as ghosting, that is to say going over the two points without making contact with the paper. and to get the optimum straight line rotating the paper is crucial. many of your lines aren't meeting the end points and they have quite a bit of arching. to avoid the arching we can ghost the lines in the opposite direction (of the arch).
ghosted planes: your lines here have some of the previous issues; a bit of wobbliness and arching. so i recommend following the similar principles here as the ghosted lines section. you should also add some varying angles as most of these seem to be forward facing.
ellipses
tables of ellipses: some of the ellipses seem to have quite a bit of unevenness and open shape to them due to probable rushing. but nice job of drawing over 2-3 times on some of them (on page 2).
ellipses in planes: it's a common mistake to get the ellipses to reach the edges of the planes, and ending up with slightly deformed shapes. the focus here should be on the evenness of the ellipse-shape.
funnels: most of these ellipses remain within the funnel shape, so well done. however, the ellipses are placed a bit loosly rather than being tightly knit together and some of the ellipses are not aligning to the minor exis.
boxes
plotted perspective: the boxes are a bit too small and the line weight needs to be on the outer lines surrounding the box.
rough perspective: some of the ghosting line problems are recurring here. rotating the page is a vital step to get better line quality in general. otherwise, you seem to be following most of the instructions on this section.
rotated boxes: there seem to be some guessing going on here, specially with the boxes on the corners. the neighbouring forms will be informing of each box's position and also try to keep the gaps a bit more consistent. ghosting method, again will be convenient for neat and less wobbly hatching lines.
organic perspective: i recommend paying close attention to the lesson description and the videos for this one. initially it appears to be one of the more complex exercises but once you understand the importance of rotating your pages for line quality as well as angle of the boxes it becomes less daunting. also start with an initial Y shape and plan your lines with the dots.
overall, perfecting each exercise is not the goal, neither is rushing/ grinding to finish them as fast as possible. these exercises will become part of warmup routine for the upcoming homework or challenges, so, there will be plenty of opportunity to improve over time. all the best!
Next Steps:
i recommend you revisit the following exercises;
fill in the empty space on your superimposed lines hw
1 page of ghosted lines exercise
1 page of organic perspective
hi
great job on completing lesson 1 hw. i'll be handling your critic on this section.
lines
super imposed lines: both sides of your lines have some fraying to them. while it's alright to have fraying on the finishing end, we try to avoid it at the starting point.
the ghosted lines aren't looking too bad, though they have some curving. we try to avoid this by ghosting the line in the opposite direction (of a curve).
you're clearly planning the lines in the ghosted planes section, which is great. however, there's again some noticable arching of lines so again, you need to ghost them in the opposite dirction. also, try rotating the paper to get the optimum straight line.
ellipses
tables of ellipses: ellipses look pretty good but there aren't much variety in sizes and degrees. they also need to placed a bit more tightly knit with each other.
funnels: you have drawn the middle line twice, we aren't suppose to do that. and whatever's going on at the right corner, i suggest to avoid it for this hw lesson.
ellipses in planes: a common mistake in this part is trying to make the ellipses touch all the edges of the planes. we just need to make sure the ellipses have a even shape on both ends. some of the ellipses are looking neat and you seem to have gone over them 2-3 times which is great.
boxes
in the plotted perspective, if you're adding hatching lines add them on the same plane for each boxes but make sure the boxes on the front doesn't overlap with the boxes behind.
with the rough perspective you're rightfully following the instructions, good job on that. some of the lines have wobbliness which can be improved overtime but try to avoid going over the lines.
rotated boxes are looking alright, even though you didn't add the hatching lines. and if you're attempting line weight they also require some planning while using the ghosting method.
organic perspective: boxes need a bit more varying in sizes and their rotations. once again, leave the lines as they turn out the first time and don't redraw them, which only makes it messier.
overall, your attemts turned out quite alright and you seem to be paying close attention to most of the instructions. i'd almost mark it as complete, however, the funnel exercise page needs a bit more attention. by the way, you can either use a ballpoint pen or the specified fineliner (0.5) for lesson 1 and 250 boxes challenge.
Next Steps:
i recommend revisioning the following exercises;
1 page of superimposed lines
1 page of ellipses in funnels
hello,
i'll be handling your lesson 1 hw critic.
first of all, great job on completing the lesson.
lines
also, i'm noticing some sort of texture with the lines which might've been caused by board / (sth else) underneath the paper or maybe it's the paper texture. this can be avoided by adding 3-4 printer paper underneath your drawing surface and don't use texture paper in general.
[ regular printer paper or office paper is recommended. ]
ghosted lines: some lines have a bit of curving and wobbliness. to get straighter lines, try to rotate the paper and practice ghosting on the opposite direction (of a curve).
ghosted planes: try to follow the same principles mentioned in ghosted lines section.
what's standing out the most to me is the amount of blank space left on the paper. try adding as many planes as possible (of various sizes and angles) on the paper. right now, it doesn't look complete.
ellipses
tables of ellipses: great job on this exercise! ellipses are looking nice and snug. although, try not going over the ellipses more than 2-3 times.
fill out out the page of ghosted planes and add a few more ellipses in planes. keep in mind to maintain the evenness of the ellipses regardless of them touching the edges of the planes.
funnels: for the funnel excercise, there's too much gap between the ellipses. we try to avoid this by adding the ellipses as close to one another as possible, as well as trying to keep them within the funnel.
boxes
for the plotted perspective, we need to use rulers/ straight edge to draw the boxes. some of the lines seem to have been drawn over. try to avoid it.
rough perspective is one of the most difficult exercises. what's standing out the most to me is, you're not using ghosted lines for drawing these boxes. one more thing to keep in mind is we do not extend line to the exact vanishing point but try to make an estimation towards it.
the rotated box section has 25 boxes in total (5in each line and 5 in each row). i recommend adding the missing boxes.
in the organic perspective excercise, some of the previous issues are noticable. the lines here needs to be drawn using the ghosted method. you can rotate the paper to get the best / straightest possible line.
and don't keep so much space in between the boxes. i recommend adding a few more boxes in between (varying in sizes and rotations).
Next Steps:
firstly; i suggest completing these
fill in the visible empty spaces on ghosted planes hw (also add the ellipses);
add the missing boxes in rotated box page (need to be 25 in total)
secondly; try redoing these-
1 page of ellipses in funnel exercise
1 page of rough perspective exercise
1 page of organic perspective excercise
lastly;
i don't recommend rushing or grinding any of the exercises, take your time. and as we move forward there will be more chances to practice these as warmup and improve over time.
Thank you so much for the insightful critic. Will keep in mind the pointers moving forward ^ ^
When it comes to technical drawing, there's no one better than Scott Robertson. I regularly use this book as a reference when eyeballing my perspective just won't cut it anymore. Need to figure out exactly how to rotate an object in 3D space? How to project a shape in perspective? Look no further.
