    Hi Cuongpham,

First of all, congratulations on finishing the 250 boxes. It's a huge accomplishment and you deserve all the praise in the world for it.

I notice a pretty inconsisten inside corner for you. That's a totally common issue, don't worry about it too much. I would suggest that you try this method. https://imgur.com/a/DHlA3Jh

A trick that helped me when I was doing the boxes, was to lay down a dot approximately where I believed the proper inside corner would sit, then use my pencil, or my fingers to create a line between the corner I'm drawing from to my dot. This would result in a MUCH more accurate line for me. It would result in some ugly dots, but that's okay.

Diverging lines doesn't seem to be much of an issue for you, which is awesome. You're thinking the right way about it.

One issue I am noticing is wobbly lines. I have a few things to suggest. I'd like to see you ghosting your lines properly, and executing with confidence. The wobble is generally a result of the artist moving their pen too slowly. For now it needs to be quick and confident. Additionally, your extended line STARTS at the end of the lines composing your boxes, and curves on quite a few of them. This could be the result of using a straightedge that is not sturdy, or not holding it tightly enough.

I'd like to see you do another 30 boxes doing the other method for finding the inside corner, as well as following through all the way through the edge when linemaking with a sturdy straightedge, like a metal ruler or firm plastic, held tightly.

    Next Steps:

30 more boxes with the aforementioned methods.

    Hi Nainne,

    Thank you for the feedback!

I've attached 30 more boxes here. Let me know what you think!

Just what I wanted to see. The accuracy comes with practice. Onward to the boxes!

    Next Steps:

You will have nightmares about boxes.

    Hi Oursblanc,

This is a great attempt at lesson one. Your markmaking is super accurate and super confident. This is what I like to see.

Your plotted perspective doesn't go all the way to the VP, but it comes close enough for me to know that they're accurate. For future reference, it should.

I'd like one more page of the Rough Perspective. It's a little bit... rough. I think you drew your boxes a little bit too close to the line with the VP. Try spacing it just a little bit further and send it this way.

The rotated boxes is a little wompy, but that's to be expected. I still can't draw a good one. Full credit.

And the organic perspective looks great too.

1 more page of the rough perspective, and I'll give you the thumbs up for a pass.

    Next Steps:

1 page of the rough perspective.

    Hi MINDOFRODRIGO,

I have a few statements to make. Your lines are kinda wobbly on your ghosted lines. This tells me that you're overthinking it a little bit. Don't be afraid to execute quickly and confidently. I'd like to see a line that's smooth and misses the mark slightly, rather than one that does and wobbles.

I'd like to see 1 more page of ghosted planes with ellipses inside. Your executions in the other exercises are a great, but specifically in that one, I want another page with confident execution of the ellipses that meet the walls of the plane.

You forgot the hatching on your boxes for Plotted Perspective. Not a deal breaker, but makes the image a lot harder to make sense of. Please see the image below.

The rough perspective one messed me up the first time I did it. Some of your lines are off, but that's something that I'm convinced will be resolved via the 250 box challenge.

I would like you to do the Rotated Boxes again. Your approach is honest, but I think you misunderstood. It's meant to be a sphere composed of boxes, whereas your attempt is more like a combination of that, and a sphere that's been divided up like the surface of a soccer ball. Please see the attached image.

    https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/9a2db6a0.jpg

Your organic perspective shows the same thing as the rough perspective. You've successfully created the image of them being of varying distances, but the boxes look a bit dodgy. I think the 250 box challenge will help with this.

    Next Steps:

1 page of ghosted planes with ellipses inside.

    1 page of Rotated Boxes

    Hi Trashyy,

I won't hold it against you for reusing paper. I know not everyone has access to fresh paper at all times. In the future, I would recommend you to buy printer paper in the near future if you can.

Everything looks good here to me, I just have two main complaints.

Your ellipses are a bit loose. I'd like to see you redo a page of the tables with tighter circles.

Your lines on the forced perspective don't travel all the way. Please see Uncomfortable's example. If you redo one page with the lines travelling all the way, we can call it good.

    https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/6378cbe0.jpg

    Next Steps:

1 page of Tables of Ellipses.

1 page of Plotted Perspective, with the lines all the way to the VP.

    Hi Etallerin,

This is honestly fantastic. Great job. Wonderful line work, I can tell you were ghosting properly and everything.

A few small notes. I'd probably like to see your ellipses a bit more... ovular. I'm absolutely not going to mark that against you, just a note.

In the case of the ellipses in ghosted planes, I think that some of them could stand to be a bit better contained within the planes. Again, not bad enough for me to actually mark you down, just something to pay attention to in the future.

The angles on will come more naturally in the future. Especially later on when you've gotten your mileage in after the 250 box challenge.

    Next Steps:

Good work, you have my blessing. On to the boxes.

    Hi HOMEISHELHEIM,

Your superimposed lines look good, albeit the fray is pretty wide on some of them. I would suggest that you make sure you are making one smooth movement. I know that the curved ones are a bit tricky compared to straight, and the longer they get, the more the fray begins. Overall, well enough. Good job.

For ghosted lines, I have to question a few of these. I will give these the passing grade, but I see some where it appears that you remade the mark to better fit where your line ended up in the end. I'm guilty of this as well in the past, so I can look past it, but I recommend just letting the mistakes be there. Nothing wrong with every one not being perfect. Just keep working on ghosting your lines before making them.

Ghosted Planes look good, but I don't see the dots that denote where the lines that cross the center of the plane along the length of the lines that form the plane. I know that sounds confusing. I'm talking about the plus. Those are meant to be there. I won't mark you down for those not being there, but bear that in mind in the future.

Tables of ellipses look great, honestly. No further comments.

A few of the ellipses in planes look good as well. A few are a bit sloppy and may have a few too many rings in the circle, but I won't hold that against you.

Funnels look good as well. I think some of them could stand to be tighter (closer circles), but not to an extent that disqualifies your attempt. Good work.

Plotted Perspective looks great. Perfect, honestly.

Rough Perspective needs some work. Some of the boxes are missing the inside of the box. All 8 corners of the boxes are meant to be seen, and all 4 lines that lead to the plotted vanishing point should be filled as well. Please see Uncomfortable's example page.

Rotated boxes is... something. I'm going to request that you redo it entirely. I know that it's a complex exercise, and something of a pain in the ass, but it's necessary for the later 250 box challenge. Your attempt at it doesn't follow the instructions correctly, please reread the page and take another shot at it. You've got this.

    https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/rotatedboxes

Organic Perspective looks pretty good, you did a good job controlling the sizes of your boxes, but some boxes aren't constructed properly. I'm going to request a partial redo on your pages, and pay close attention to your lines constructing the boxes. Bear in mind that they shouldn't close in on one another so aggressively. I recommend looking over the example images again.

    https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/598a86fb.jpg

Overall, I want to give you a passing grade, but in order to do so, I need to see a few redone pages from you. You're very close, so get these done and it's all yours.

    Next Steps:

    1 page rough perspective

    1 page rotated boxes

    1 page organic perspective.

Rapid Viz

Rapid Viz

Rapid Viz is a book after mine own heart, and exists very much in the same spirit of the concepts that inspired Drawabox. It's all about getting your ideas down on the page, doing so quickly and clearly, so as to communicate them to others. These skills are not only critical in design, but also in the myriad of technical and STEM fields that can really benefit from having someone who can facilitate getting one person's idea across to another.

Where Drawabox focuses on developing underlying spatial thinking skills to help facilitate that kind of communication, Rapid Viz's quick and dirty approach can help students loosen up and really move past the irrelevant matters of being "perfect" or "correct", and focus instead on getting your ideas from your brain, onto the page, and into someone else's brain as efficiently as possible.
