That is really an improvement great job!

    Next Steps:

I suggest now you do the 250 boxes challenge. Keep ghosting those lines and you will be fine!!

    Hi, thanks for replying.

Tried my best with these boxes maybe they aren't perfect but they are more dramatic than my usual.

They definitelly got better in terms of making boxes shallow! Great job.

Hopefully you now understand how to make certain boxes both shallow and dramatic.

    Next Steps:

You can move onto lesson 2.

Hello, Well done on completing the 250 box challenge!!

In your drawings you already pointed out the places you made mistakes. This is a good habit to have!! It helps when you don't have anybody to critic it for you. Since you did this there is no reason for me to point them out again. Your boxes are very well done. You can see a lot of effort put into them. Line weight and hatching is good as well. One thing that I have noticed is you tend not to draw boxes which are long in width but short in depth and height.

All in all great job, there was a lot of improvement from the beginning to the end and hopefully you can get even better!

    Next Steps:

You can continue with lesson 2!

Hello, I have noticed the amount of uncommented responses in this lesson. I myself have just submitted the 250 box challenge and I thought I would respond to as many of these as possible to the best of my ability.

One thing I noticed with your boxes is how dramatic the poses are. Although form time to time you can draw those kinds of boxes the exercise was more about shallower boxes. To acheive a shallower box just "place" the vanishing point further away (preferably off the page). Some dramatic boxes you made were: 164, 144, 139 ect.

When you do shallower boxes they are more consistant, easier to make and generally look nicer.

All the other problems I have with your boxes stem form the previous mistake. And they are that edges aren't actually going into the right direction. If you improve on making your boxes shallower than this will also be improved.

Your lines are stable and you could see big improvment form page one to the very last page!!

    Next Steps:

I would like you to do 10 boxes which are shallow. As simple as that.

I will mark the lesson as complete after you submit this.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Most of your boxes' perspective lines are going in the right direction even if the back ones are more difficult to align. And keep in mind you drew 250 boxes some boxes are going to repeat, if they didn't they would start looking distorted. Although I would have loved to see more boxes with a long width and short height.

Here are some things you could works on:

    • You lines seem to very very wobbly and unstable. Make sure you are ghosting each edge of a box and make a confindent motion.

    • The hatching you did was either wobbly or poorly done without much effort. This is very easily fixable just think about it the next time you do such an exercise.

In general I think you did do good. As you said you struggeld to get the back corner aligned correctly but I could definitely see improvements on this aspect near the end. You will be great at boxes in no time if you keep practising!

    Next Steps:

You have already started lesson two so I'm not sure how far you are. Boxes are fine so you don't need to do any extra work from this.

Your boxes look quite good. The lines are straight, confident and the vanishing point is quite far away.

Some things you could improve on:

    • don't redo (redraw) any lines you have put on the paper. The whole point of using pen is to make mistakes and not be able to correct them. Boxes 60, 58 and 82 have this problem among others.

    • You didn't add any line weight to the outside of the boxes. (read lesson again under the topic lineweight)

Don't worry if you boxes don't always line up with the perspecitive lines. This will improve the more you practise.

    Next Steps:

You are free to move onto the second lesson!

In general I think you did a good job. Some shapes are a little akward but they got better after you did more of them.

Some thinks that I have noticed:

    • Many of your boxes have flared out (you can see this with the extended lines- instead of going towards each other they were moving apart!) Make sure to keep this in mind when doing other boxes later on.

    • The angles of the 3 original (base) line to construct the box need to be more than 90? angle. If you do not do this the boxes become distorted. Some examples of where you could see this are in boxes: 239,114, 118 and 121 (I see you notice that it was an mistake)

The boxes are quite consistant and have good, confident lines!

    Good luck on further lessons.

Your boxes look really good!! Some easy things you can improve on though...

    • you lines are a little wobbly, try doing more ghosting and use your shoulder to do the strokes

    • sometimes you overtrace your line (you draw the same line more than once)- this might be due to the previous point I made, don't try to make the lines perfect by trying to mask the mistakes you made

Everything else looks totally fine (i would even say great) to me, the lines aren't overshot and the vanishing point are off the page. The lines coming of the boxes aren't too bad either, most of the time they merge to the (unseeable) vanishing point pretty well. :)

Good luck during the next lessons

no need for extra work! You are perfectly fine to move onto lesson 2.

I can see you used many dramatic boxes and their vanishing points were quite close the the box. This isn't necessarily bad but I hope you understand how to make both dramatic and shallow boxes. Understanding information to know how to use it is key. Other than that you didn't add any line weight to the outline of the boxes and hatching (a face in) also wasn't included. Was this because you were rushing it?

I also noticed how some lines in the box seemed to be based on guesses. If you read the lesson again and watch the video than you might see more of your mistakes.

I can see your boxes improved over time and your lines are pretty consitant and confident throughtout the whole exercise.

I see you have already moved on to lesson two by this point but hopefully this helps at least a little!

Good luck on further lessons :)

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
