Hi, I'm Julia and I will give you some pointers now!

First of all I would like to congratulate you, you did it! You went through the lesson 1!! Overall I don't see many major issues and the little I see I will talk about a bit!

    1. Super Imposed Lines - I think you did great here, kept the "frying" to just one end of the line for the most part and all the lines look like they've been executed correctly with your arm, good job! I noticed in some places like here your lines got a little bit wavy, that may be due to you not rotating the page enough, maybe your hand was in an awkward angle, try to avoid it and remember we are going for smooth confident execution, like a samurai swinging it's katana over the accuracy, those wobbles may have come from you focusing on staying on the line too much, so work on that on the future!

    2. Ghosted Lines - Great job on this one, you seem to be really good at making these lines smooth and confident. I noticed that all of your lines are rather short, so for the future I would encourage you to practice making longer lines, as for the little longer lines on this page I noticed they tend to get a bit wobbly and way less confident than the short ones, but overall you definitely understood the concepts behind this exercise! Good job!

    3. Ghosted Planes - You're missing the planes without the ellipsses in it, so please add them in the comment to this critique!

    4. Tables of Ellipses - It seems like you've drawn through each and every ellipse so congratz on that, they are all snuggly touching each other which is great as well. In some of them I can see that you kinda leave like this little tail on your ellipses like here, a way to fix this would be to try lifting your pen more abruptly off the page while you're still on the ellipse and just focus more on the motion, not on what is being drawn on the page, because that will cause those tails, this will get better with time but you're definitely set on a right path, just keep practicing it will get easier and better I promise!

    5. Ellipses in planes - Great job all of your ellipses seem to be fitting your planes well enough, I can clearly see you're trying to make them fit in which is great. I spotted some deformed ellipses so keep focusing and practicing and remember it's always confidence over accuracy, it's better to have overshoot ellipse in plane than a wobbly one! Overall tho I feel like you understood all the material very well, just again will take some time to get more comfortable at it!

    6. Funnels - I think in this one you kinda set yourself up for a harder time by not putting the minor axis in the middle, but often times you put it to the side, which made it basically impossible to create correct ellipses, so be careful with that, because as we know the minor axis splits the ellipse into 2 equal halves, so by putting your minor axis to the side by default if you follow it, it won't create you an ellipse. It's dangerous because you may develop bad muscle memory by this, so be careful! I made an example of how it should have been

    7. Plotted Perspective - Great job on that one, you definitely kept all of your boxes within the cone of vision, there is no distortion happening, you extended every single line to correct vanishing point, great job!

    8. Rough Perspective - Great job at this one as well, you did a good job estimating and ghosting the lines towards the vps, all of the boxes look solid!

    9. Rotated Boxes - You did it! Congratz, this may be one of the most challenging tasks in this lesson, but you made it through! All boxes seem to be aligned and you drew through them as well, the lines for the inside boxes look very unconfident, like you were afraid to make a mistake or to commit in fear of making wrong line, but remember that you should make mistakes and don't be afraid of them because it makes it easier to correct them if they are put on the page, treat them as information as to what you can do better next time, but if you never commit to them, you will not improve them, because you cannot even see them in their full glory. Other than that the boxes are fairly rotated, some places it looks like they are not actually rotating especially in the bottom half, but overall you made it and that's what counts, great job!

    10. Organic Perspective - You really did good with this one as well, all of the boxes seem to be converging correctly, the flow is nice, you have a lot of variety in your boxes and you even have this nice feeling of scale going. I will again just say that you can work still on your line confidence going forward.

As for your question: I'm not sure what's the anserw here, but personally my method is to start by ghosting my ellipse over the page rather slowly, still involving a bit of my eyes by making sure I'm roughly covering all 4 connection points and I go at this speed till I feel confident and then I increase it till I feel confident and the faster spit and eventually I get to that drill speed that my eyes can't see the points anymore, but because I gradually got there I'm able to hit the marks without needing to look so I actually get smooth ellipses and I hit my points, it may take some time at the beginning, but with time it becomes easier!

Overall great job, just submit the missing pages so I can mark this lesson complete for you!

    Next Steps:

2x missing pages of ghosed planes *without the ellipses in it

I see that you struggled but what counts it that you challenged yourself to do this demonic exercise! Good job, leave it as it is for now and try it after making 250 boxes challenge you will love the improvement - trust me! You did great job at funnels - all of the ellipses are alligned with minor axis which is the most important. SO, i think you're ready for 250 boxes challenge now!

    Next Steps:

    250 box challenge

    You're welcome.

Yeah that's a huge improvement! You really make those ellipses round as they should be. You need practice with ellipses just like anybody else haha just warm up before drawing session with tables of ellipses or any other exercises from lesson 1 and you will get there! Good luck tho :)

    Next Steps:

250 boxes are what you need

    Hi, good job!

I think you did excellent job at superimposed lines exercise.

Your ghosted lines are pretty good too. I found some arcing issues, but it seems to not be an issue looking at your ghosted planes which looks pretty solid to me.

Table of ellipses are looking really good too. All of them snuggle nicely next to each other, no wobblines for the most part. I can see that you struggle a little bit with ending your ellipses cleanly as some of them have little curls at the end. One thing you can do to fix this is try lifting your pen off the page to end your mark instead of trying to stop the motion of your arm.

Ellipses in planes are also looking good, but remember that its more important to have a nice round ellipse even if you miss some marks than a wobbly shape that hit all the marks. Just keep it in mind as I see in some of your planes you did this mistake.

Your rough perspective is good, your horizontal lines stay largely parallel to the horizon and your vertical lines are fairly perpendicular - which is the most important part. I have some issues with your line weight on these boxes's frons, the lines are not clean they look like they have some frying in the ends, but its good you added them by ghosting them in.

The organic perspective went okay, nothing that drawing 250 boxes can't fix.

    Next Steps:

I would mark it as completed but you're missing:

    1 page of Funnels

    1 page of Plotted perspective

    1 page of Rotated boxes

Please submit them here for critique.

Hi! Thank you for your time and critique!

The weight issue is the thing I'm trying to work on daily to overcome, eventually it will get better I hope. :D

Hello there! You did it! You went through it all!

So, in your Superimposed lines exercises i noticed that your lines are frying on the both ends a lot. When doing the exercies make sure that you always start on the same point but I feel like you get over it in the second page so it's not an issue.

Your ghosted lines had it's wobbles and a an arcing issues. Remember, confidence and straight lines over accuracy - it comes from practicing ghosting a lot.

Looking at your ghosted planes tho I feel like you get rid of wobblines for the most part, although i still see a little bit of arcing here and there, make sure to always ghost before doing a line and execute it boldly even if it means it misses the destination. The arcing may also come from you not using your arm pivot. If you're sure you used your arm for it and it still appears try compensating with arcing your lines the other way so the line turns out straight. If you have a lot of trouble hitting the mark just really take your time with ghosting even for a minute or more before making a line. It's not a race - take your time.

In your ellipses in planes exercises wobblines strikes again! Remember its more important to have an smooth boldly drawn ellipse that may have missed 2 or 3 marks inside plane than have a one with wobbly edges that striked all the marks. Work on that, really ghost these ellipses for some time until you feel like you have the motion covered. I also realized you had a lot the ellipses ending with kind little curl at the end. One thing you can do to fix this is try lifting your pen off the page to end your mark instead of trying to stop the motion of your arm. But you did a great job of drawing through all your ellipses two times!

In the table of ellipses exercise I can see that for the most part your ellipses fit in the spaces pretty good but I would say you still kinda have same issues as in the ellipses in planes exercise.

In funnels exercise you made a mistake of not placing the minor axis exactly in the middle. It should be made so when you draw your ellipses inside it cuts them perfectly into 2 symmetrical shapes. If you ever find your ellipses are slanting try turning the page until they line up correctly. I also noticed that the degrees are not changing and they should, it's kinda optional but doesn't hurt to do it.

In your rough perspective I would say you did pretty good. Your horizontal lines stayed parallel to the horizon and your vertical lines are fairly perpendicular for the most part. You also did a pretty good job of getting your boxes to converge near or on your plotted vanishing points. Next time doing this exercise I would encourage you to adding some more weight to the lines in the front of the boxes by ghosting over it like trying to do a line and then going over it few times to create a thicker line.

On rotated boxes you did okay, it's a really hard exercise to tackle. Your boxes are well constructed and they are kept together nicely, but you have the common mistake of not actually rotating them, you can read about it here.

On your organic perspective you did okay. There are some mistakes but not a one that drawing 250 boxes won't fix! ;)

    Next Steps:

Overall I think you did a good job I would only like to see:

2 pages of ellipses in planes

with minding the mistakes I spoke about in the critique.

Thanks for the critique! I'm gonna mind all the things going forward.

After I submitted I got another 2 pens and they both died but it turned out I was in fact going to hard on them due to my arm being new to the whole drawing from arm situation. Luckily I got now another I even managed to get the staedtler one which I'm super happy about. Thanks a lot for sharing your yt channel, it didn't help the pen situation at that time but definitely helped with drawing boxes and lesson 2 later.

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
