    Hi CULHWCH!

Thank you a lot for your response. I will try to do the things you said in the following days and hopefully I'll be able to understand drawing texture in a better way. I really appreciate your answer, thank you for the help.

    Have a nice day :)

    Hi TONYGOTCAKES!

Thanks a lot for taking the time to critique my submission. So about the hatching on the first boxes, I've unfortunately misread the homework page and used a ruler for those ones. I'm sorry for misleading you.

Yeah you're right, I've sometimes kinda forgot to check the degrees between my lines while I was drawing mostly because I didin't want to draw the same boxes over and over again. I'll try to be more mindful about it.

Thank you for your recommendations! I'll study them and make sure to apply them to my future boxes!

Once again thanks for your critique, have a nice day!

Yeah these ones are better, your lines are smoother and looks like they aligned correctly with the horizon line. I think you can move on to the 250 boxes challenge now.

Don't forget about the warm-up exercises!

    Hey RAZGRIZ0531!

Congrats on finishing Lesson 1! Today I'll be critiquing your homwork. Let's begin, shall we?

    1. LINES

    1.1 Super Imposed Lines

Your lines looks really nice, they are varied, not much wobbling, just a bit of fraying at the ends which is completely fine, not much arching neither and plotted well. The curved ones also looks really well. Nice job!

    1.2 Ghosted Lines

This part also looks well done. There is just a small amount of wobbly lines and arching but that's not a problem because most of them are quite great. I don't think I can say anythink else.

    1.3 Ghosted Planes

Well, you are doing really great for a beginner! Only thing I can say about this part is that I see that you repeated some of your lines. You don't need to do that, keeping them just as they are and moving on is actually quite important. But apart from that nice job on this, your planes looks really clean.

    2. ELLIPSES

    2.1 Tables of Ellipses

Some of the ellipses are not touching the borders and overlapping but you've did mostly well here. They are varied but next time maybe try to slant them a bit more, it can be quite fun.

    2.2 Ellipsesin Planes

These look fantastic! I don't have anything to say other than that :D

    2.3 Funnels

I'm not sure about the ones on the corners but others are looking great. The minor axis cuts them in to symetrical halves, the ellipses are drawn nicely and kept close to each other. Yeah that's it!

    3, BOXES

    3.1 Plotted Perspective

Yeah I don't see anything wrong with these exercises.

    3.2 Rough Perspective

Seems like you've had some problems with keeping your width lines parallel to the horizon line at first but the next boxes doesn't appear have this problem so good job with fixing your mistakes! However just as a reminder, please don't repeat your lines in these exericeses.

    3.3 Rotated Boxes

This is the best homework for this exercise I've seen so far really nice job! It is usually hard for students to actually understand this concept of rotating boxes in 3D space but your's looks amazing. Just a small tiny note, try to keep the corners of the boxes at the edges a bit closer to each other.

    3.4 Organic Perspective

Don't worry if you think that the perspective is a bit off here, you've still did a really nice job.

So yeah that's all I could say about your Lesson 1 submission. I'm sorry if it's a bit shorter than you've expected this is really all I could say. I think you are ready to move into the 250 Boxes Challenge.

And by the way. if you don't mind me asking, is this your first time picking up drawing?

    Next Steps:

Feel free to move into 250 Boxes Challenge. Don't forget about your warm-up exercises and the 50% Rule!

    Hello DEERMODEST!

Today I'm going to critique your Lesson 1 submission!

    Let's go!

    1. LINES

    1.1 Super Imposed Lines

The lines are looking good apart from some wobbliness here and there. The main thing I see about your lines is that there seems to be fraying on both ends. Fraying on the end of your lines are quite expected, but fraying on the starting points of your lines is usually a sign of not giving yourself enough time to position the pen correctly and then drawing the line. Try to be a bit more careful about placing your starting dots and that problem would get fixed. Other than that your lines are drawn confidently, and your curvy lines are looking nice as well. Nice job!

    1.2 Ghosted Lines

You've plotted your lines nicely, they've overshoot sometimes but that's fine for now. What I'd like to bring your attention to is, that bit of arching I see on them. Arching on the lines is something I've seen most students had problems with when they are starting out. However it isn't too hard to fix it! I'd recommend re-reading Lines: Using Your Arm page and being -just- a bit more careful with using your shoulder. However,if you think that you are actually using your arm correctly, then try to arch your lines slightly to the opposite direction. People usually find this really helpful.

    1.3 Ghosted Planes

I can tell that your lines have gotten better in this exercise. They are plotted really well, executed in a single stroke and yeah, really nice job in this part!

    2. ELLIPSES

    2.1 Table of Ellipses

In this part, your ellipses are done quite nicely most of the time. They aren't overlapping much and are kept between the bounds of the borders. They are also drawn through as well. A few of them looks disoriented, but thats okay. Oh and nice job with varying your ellipses.

    2.2 Ellipses in Planes

The ellipses are drawn mostly well, though some of them are not touching all the borders of the planes but I'm sure you'll improve if you keep up with your exercises. Also you might want to pay some attention to your second eliipses, (I mean when you draw over them) try to keep them as same as the original ellipse, instead of adjusting them to touch the borders.

    2.3 Funnels

Honestly this part looks really great! The minor axis is cutting the ellipses into to almost really symetrical halves, the ellipses themselves are drawn nicely and well placed, I don't have anything to say about this part.

    3. BOXES

    3.1 Plotted Perspective

This section looks really clean and nicely done. You've drawn through your boxes, the lines from the corners of the boxes are drawn correctly to their corresponding vanishing points. Just some little thing to keep in mind, it would be better if you can draw these lines fully to leading to the vanishing points as it makes it a bit more clearer.

    3.2 Rough Perspective

Here is the things you did well:

    • Keeping the width of the boxes parallel to the horizon line while keeping the height of the boxes perpendicular.

    • Even though some of them might look a bit weird, I think you've did well with drawing through your boxes. (The back corner)

    • Leading the edges of your boxes to the vanishing points.

    • Keeping the corners of the boxes close to each other.

And here is the things that could need some more attention:

    • The things about your lines I've mentioned above.

    • Maybe putting a bit more time to think if your boxes edge will line up with the vanishing points. Though you'll work a lot more into this in the next exercise, so it's not big deal, just something to keep in your mind.

No need to worry, I can see the lines quite clearly!

    3.3 Rotated Boxes

This looks really well done. Seems like you've grasped how to rotate them in the 3D space! The left part looks like it isn't rotating as much as the right side but it's fine. The only thing I'd like to say is your back corners looks a bit off. I don't know if you've rushed this part or not, but try to be more careful next time. But yeah good job!

    3.4 Organic Perspective

Well, this part looks good as well. Don't feel bad if you think the perspective isn't completely right, that's just normal. Though I think one thing you've could've done would be adding lineweight to the boxes that are appering intersect with each other. If did correctly, line weight will help us to differ these boxes from each other and make us able to see which one of them is closer to the viewer more easily. Still, this is a really nice work you've done here.

So, that's all I had to tell you about your Lesson 1 submission. I think you've grasped the concepts that are taught with these exercices really nicely, and you can move on to the next lesson when you have 2 complete checkmarks marked on your submission! While waiting for that, add all of these exercises to your pool of wam-up exercises and try focus on the points I've mentioned in my critique.

If you have any questions to ask or feel like some part in my post isn't clear enough, please tell me!

    Next Steps:

Add these exercises to your warm-up pool and pick one of them to do before your drawing sessions, more information can be found here

Don't forget about the 50% Rule!

Hi! I'm really sorry I've mixed thing up. I've read the guide as drawing through the lines as in drawing over them a second time, instead of drawing through the box itself, to see the back corner. Again I'm sorry for the confusion, your boxes are fine in this regard.

    8:05 PM, Tuesday December 12th 2023

Hey I'm sorry for the confusion but I'd like to ask you to do 1 page of Organic Perspective rather than 2 pages. Unfortunately I cannot edit the main post's Next Steps sections.

    Hello THEGRANDSAMU!

How are you doing? Hope all is well.

Today I will be giving you feedback on your Lesson 1 submission.

    Lets begin!

    1. LINES

    1.1 Super Imposed Lines

I can see some wobbly lines in this part, both on the longer and the shorter straight lines. On your curved lines there isn't as much, nice job! Also there isn't much fraying on your starting points so thats nicely done. Now regarding the wobbly lines, I usually recommend giving Lines: Using Your Arm another read. Hopefully it can help you with that.

    1.2 Ghosted Lines

This part also looks good, just bear in mind the wobbly lines appear here as well. The plotting is nice though some lines have went over the dots but thats mostly okay for now, it will get better as you practice. Another thing students usually have a hard about is arching lines but your lines doesn't seem to have this problem. Nice!

    1.3 Ghosted Planes

The first page had the problems I mentioned earlier but the second page seems to be a lot better! Lines are drawn more confidently and they don't have much wobbling. Also your lines are plotted nicely, both the starting and ending dots are nicely done. The only thing I'd like to mention about this part is that it seems like you've sometimes drawn over your lines, it is best to leave them as they are because it helps us understanding what was wrong with it and giving a more accurate feedback, just a heads up.

    2. ELLIPSES

    2.1 Tables of Ellipses

In this part, the ellipses are drawn confidently as well. There is a bit of overlapping, but it's not that much so it's not much of a problem. I think the boxes you've drawn are to show the gap between the ellipse and the borders, so yes that might be something you'll need to pay attention to but you'll get better at this with more practice as well. By the way, next time you do this exercise as part of your warm-up exercises, try to differ your ellipses a bit. Draw some of them with more degrees or try slanting them, drawing different varietions of them can help you learn faster.

    2.2 Ellipses in Planes

Your ellipses have mostly over the borders in this exercise, but as you know they were supposed to be within the planes so please try to be more careful with that next time. Also nice job with drawing through your ellipses in both this and the previous section!

    2.3 Funnels

All of the things I've said about the previous exercises apply here as well, but the other thing is that the minor axis should cut the ellipses in half as in 2 symetrical halves. Most of your funnels seems okay in this regard, but the ones on the upper right hand side seems to be a bit off.

    3. BOXES

    3.1 Plotted Perspective

This part looks really great, nice job! I don't have much to say.

    3.2 Rough Perspective

Now moving on to some of the harder exercises of this lesson; in this part the width lines should be parallel to the horizon line and the height lines perpendicular to horizon. Now it seems like you've had some problems with your lines here, as they are usually wobbly and not really obeying the rule I mentioned earlier, which is usually fine since you are just starting out and it could be hard for some students to understand this concept. So we usually just mention it so you can pay attention to later on your next warm-up exercises, but the lines are a bit more important right now, since they are what we use to draw basically everything. My recommendation would be practicing drawing shorter lines. Oh and by the way, it seems like you didn't drawn over your lines in this exercise, which should've been done on all of the boxes exercises apart from the organic perspective, in that one it's optional.

    3.3 Rotated Boxes

Boxes in this exercise doesn't appear to be rotating, though your lines are looking better. Your boxes are just appering to get further away from the viewer. And most of the boxes don't have their back corner drawn neither.

But don't feel down! This part is can get (and does!) confusing and hard to understand for new students, what actually matters is attempting to do it with your best capabilities for now! I recommend reading the Boxes: Rotation, Perspective Grids, and the Concept of Infinity page and watching the video linked at the top of the page, and I'd also recommend watching some other videos on Youtube or other platforms if you'd like.

    3.4 Organic Perspective

The perspective is a bit off here, you've did a great job with making the boxes that are closer to the viewer look bigger than the ones that further away. My only advice for this part is you should add line weight to the parts where boxes are overlapping to make one of them look in front of the other box.

Now just to make sure that you can really understand these concepts here correctly, i'll ask for revisions because what is being taught here will be really important in the following challenge, 250 boxes challenge.

    Next Steps:

    Please do:

    1 Page of Rough Perspective

    2 Pages of Organic Perspective

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hey, no worries! It's fine :)

I see, hope it won't cause much problem this time!

    Have nice day, Üsame!

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
