Disclaimer: I'm really sorry if I come across as rude sometimes. We're all learning and doing our best to improve and I only speak English as a second language, so, please, bear with me (^_^")

    Lines

    Superimposed Lines

    • You lines barely wobbled and have a nice flow to them.

    • They mostly only frayed on the far side, but, next time around, make sure you're always taking your time to place the pen on the start point before executing the stroke.

    Ghosted Lines

    • With very few exceptions, your lines barely wobbled.

    • They didn't arc at all.

    Ghosted Planes

    • You've managed to maintain the same level of quality in your markmaking as in the previous exercise.

    Ellipses

    Table of Ellipses

    • Ideally you should draw through your ellipses only two full times.

    • In spite of some overlapping, you clearly did your best to fit the ellipses as snugly as possible against each other and the edges of the tables.

    • Many of your ellipses turned out fairly smooth. Curved lines are a lot more daunting to draw than the straight ones. Just make sure you keep applying the ghosting method as thoroughly as possible and engaging your whole arm when executing the strokes.

    Ellipses in Planes

    • As I've mentioned above, you should ideally limit yourself to drawing around the ellipses only twice.

    • You're clearly aiming to have your ellipses touch all 4 sides of the planes.

    • As for how evenly the ellipses turned out, I'd say they improved quite a lot in comparison to the previous ones :)

    Funnels

    • You're still correctly striving to fit your ellipses snugly against each other and the edges of the funnels.

    • You're also correctly attempting to align the ellipses to the central minor axis line.

    Boxes

    Plotted Perspective

    • You correctly used a ruler.

    • You are correctly keeping your verticals perpendicular to the horizon line.

    • You did correctly plot the horizontal edges back to their corresponding vanishing points.

    Rough Perspective

    • You did correctly work with only one vanishing point, but you should ideally keep them around the center of the horizon line.

    • The front and back faces didn't always turn out rectangular.

    • You did apply the extension lines correctly.

    • You're correctly still applying the ghosting method.

    Rotated Boxes

    • You did correctly draw the vertical and horizontal axes and the squares at the end of each axis.

    • You've managed to keep the gaps reasonably tight and consistent.

    • The boxes are clearly rotating.

    • You did correctly draw through every one of the boxes.

    • You correctly drew all the boxes of the set.

    Organic Perspective

    • You're correctly still applying the ghosting method.

    • With that one exception in the last panel, all the sets of parallel edges are correctly converging away from the viewer.

    • I personally really like how your boxes turned out in this exercise, but when you redo it in your warm-ups, try and keep the foreshortening just a bit more subtle.

    Next Steps:

That's it, Fomarius! Congratulations! Now, add these drills to your pool of warm-ups and on to the 250 box challenge! Keep up the good work!

    Lines

    Superimposed Lines

    • The lines did wobble, but I'd say it's subtle enough. It's common that the curved and longer ones tend to waver more. In your warm-ups, make sure to always prioritize confidence over accuracy.

    • There is some fraying on the near side and you seem to have noticed that. The solution for this is taking your time to place the pen on the start point before executing the stroke.

    Ghosted Lines

    • The marks barely wobbled.

    • With very few exceptions, they mostly didn't arc either.

    Ghosted Planes

    • You managed to keep the same level of quality as in the previous exercise. If anything, I'd say your marks improved :)

    • As a bonus, I'd suggest you add more variety in shape when you do this exercise again in your warm-ups.

    Ellipses

    Table of Ellipses

    • You did correctly draw through your ellipses two times.

    • You did correctly aim to fit the ellipses as snugly as possible against each other and the borders of the tables.

    • Regarding wobbliness, as I've mentioned above, curved lines are a lot more challenging than the straight ones. In your warm-ups, make sure to apply the ghosting method as thoroughly as possible.

    Ellipses in Planes

    • You did correctly draw around the ellipses twice.

    • You did correctly aim to have you ellipses touch all 4 sides of the planes.

    • I'd say you ellipses turned out smoother this time than in the previous exercise :) Again, just take your time to apply the ghosting method.

    Funnels

    • You did correctly draw around the ellipses twice.

    • You did correctly aim to fit the ellipses as snugly as possible against each other and the sides of the funnels.

    • You did correctly try to align the ellipses to the central minor axis.

    Boxes

    Plotted Perspective

    • You did correctly use a ruler.

    • The verticals are all correctly perpendicular to the horizon.

    • You did correctly plot the horizontal lines back to their respective vanishing points.

    Rough Perspective

    • You did correctly work with only one vanishing point, but, ideally, they should be placed around the center of the horizon.

    • With some exceptions, most front and back faces are rectangular.

    • You did apply the extensions correctly.

    • Regarding wobbliness, take your time at each step of the ghosting method, even when there's an increase in complexity.

    Rotated Boxes

    • You did correctly say out the vertical and horizontal axes and added the squares at the end of each axis.

    • You managed to keep the gaps fairly consistent.

    • The boxes are clearly rotating.

    • You did correctly draw through most of the boxes, except for the top left and right ones (^_^")

    • You drew almost the whole set, but missed the absolute corners...

    Organic Perspective

    • You are correctly still applying the ghosting method.

    • There are quite a few parallel edges that are diverging. Take your time at the planning phase and try to make them converge.

    Next Steps:

I'd like you to redo the last exercise, being a bit more thorough in how you apply the ghosting method and making sure all the parallel edges converge towards their respective imaginary vanishing points :) Keep up the good work!

    Lines

    Superimposed Lines

    • You clearly executed your marks with confidence. A bit of wobbliness in the curved and longer lines is expected.

    • There's only fraying on the far side, which is expected when you're doing this exercise the right way. You clearly took your time to place the pen in the start point before executing the stroke.

    Ghosted Lines

    • Your marks didn't wobble at all.

    • They didn't arc either.

    Ghosted Planes

    • You managed to keep almost the same level of quality as in the previous exercise.

    • As a bonus, I'd suggest you add a bit more variety in shapes when you redo this exercise as a warm-up.

    Ellipses

    Tables of Ellipses

    • You did correctly draw through your ellipses twice.

    • Despite some occasional overlapping, you clearly did your best to fit the ellipses snugly against each other and the borders of the tables.

    • As far as wobbliness goes, the narrow ellipses seem to be particularly challenging for you. I'd focus on those ones on the warm-ups, always making sure to apply the ghosting method as thoroughly as possible :)

    Ellipses in Planes

    • Again, you did correctly draw through your ellipses twice.

    • You clearly did your best to have your ellipses touch all 4 edges of the planes.

    • Curved lines are a lot more challenging than the straight ones, and it's normal in the beginning that they turn out a bit more wobbly as we try to fit the ellipses inside a predefined space. That should improve as you redo these exercises in your warm-ups, always making sure to use the ghosting method and prioritize confidence in execution over anything else.

    Funnels

    • You did correctly draw through your ellipses twice.

    • You did try and fit the ellipses as snugly as possible against each other and the edges of the funnels.

    • You managed to align your ellipses to the central minor axis quite well.

    Boxes

    Plotted Perspective

    • You did correctly use a ruler.

    • You did correctly keep your verticals perpendicular to the horizon line.

    • You did correctly plot your horizontal edges back to their corresponding vanishing points.

    Rough Perspective

    • You did work with only 1 vanishing point, but they should've been kept around the center.

    • The front and back faces didn't always turn out rectangular, and the horizontals and verticals should've been kept parallel and perpendicular to the horizon line, respectively (meaning you shouldn't have rushed to rotate the boxes lol).

    • You did apply the extension lines correctly.

    • Despite the increase in complexity, you're still taking your time to apply the ghosting method.

    Rotated Boxes

    • You correctly laid out the vertical and horizontal axes and added the squares at the end of each axis.

    • You managed to keep the gaps fairly tight and consistent.

    • The boxes are clearly rotating.

    • You did correctly draw through all of the boxes.

    • You did correctly draw all the boxes.

    • I must add I really liked how your rotated boxes turned out. This is hands down the best result I've come across so far :) Of course, I'm not saying it doesn't have any flaws, but you clearly have what it takes to sort them out and nail this exercise in the warm-ups.

    Organic Perspective

    • You're still correctly using the ghosting method.

    • With maybe a few exceptions, I'd say your lines are converging well enough.

    • You did correctly keep the foreshortening gradual.

    Next Steps:

That's it, aLittleBirdCat! Congratulations! Now, make sure to add these drills to your pool of warm-ups and have fun drawing boxes!

    Lines

    Superimposed Lines

    • Your lines didn't wobble, as it should be.

    • With a few very subtle exceptions, your lines are only fraying on the far side, as it should be.

    Ghosted Lines

    • The lines didn't wobble at all and, with one exception, they didn't arc either.

    • You also seemed to be mindful enough of the starting point.

    Ghosted Planes

    • You managed to keep the same qualities in your markmaking as in the previous exercise.

    Ellipses

    Table of Ellipses

    • You correctly drew around the ellipses only from 2 to 3 full turns.

    • Your ellipses were correctly laid out so they fit snuggly against each other and the borders of the tables.

    • The ellipses turned out fairly evenly shaped.

    Ellipses in Planes

    • You did correctly draw through the ellipses again.

    • You clearly did your best to have your ellipses touch all 4 edges of the planes.

    • You managed to execute your ellipses fairly smoothly again.

    Funnels

    • You correctly drew through your ellipses again.

    • With the exception of some very few overlaps, you clearly did your best to have your ellipses fit snugly against each other and the edges of the funnels.

    • You also clearly did your best to align the ellipses to the central minor axis line, and they turned out quite well.

    Boxes

    Plotted Perspective

    • You used a ruler, which is the right way to go about this exercise.

    • You also managed to keep your verticals fairly perpendicular to the horizon line.

    • You correctly plotted the horizontal edges back to the vanishing points.

    • As a bonus, I'd suggest you limit yourself to hatching only one side of each box and resort to it as a way to improve the readability of overlapping boxes.

    Rough Perspective

    • In spite of not keeping them always in the center, you did correctly work with only 1 vanishing point.

    • With only one exception, all the front and back faces are rectangular.

    • You applied the line extensions correctly.

    • You are still correctly using the ghosting method. You should limit yourself to drawing straight marks only once, though.

    Rotated Boxes

    • You correctly laid out the vertical and horizontal axes and added the squares at the end of each axis.

    • I'd say the gaps turned out well enough, but, next time around, I'd try and keep them a bit tighter and more consistent.

    • The boxes are clearly rotating.

    • You correctly drew through all the boxes.

    • You missed two boxes---the ones on the upper left and right corners (^_^")

    Organic Perspective

    • Again, you are clearly applying the ghosting method, but avoid drawing over the straight lines.

    • Your parallel edges did mostly converge to their vanishing points and you managed to keep the foreshortening very gradual.

    Next Steps:

Congratulations, Daniboyy! Now, add these drills to your pool of warm-ups and bora pro 250 box challenge! É nóis ????

Wow! Your rotated boxes improved so much! As for the organic perspective exercise, I'd suggest you try and introduce some more variety in shapes and rotation when you redo it in your warm-ups :) Congratulations,KBP23! Now, on to the 250 boxes!

    Lines

    Superimposed Lines

    • Your lines did wobble a bit a few times, but I'd say it was subtle enough.

    • No fraying on the start point.

    Ghosted Lines

    • The lines didn't wobble at all!

    • They didn't arc either!

    Ghosted Planes

    • Your lines still have the same qualities as the ones from the previous exercise! You also seemed to have taken your time to place pen in the start point.

    Ellipses

    Tables of Ellipses

    • Ideally, you should try and draw the ellipses only two full times. Three times is alright, but you seemed to have drawn more than that at times.

    • The ellipses fit snugly against each other and the borders of the tables.

    • The lines did wobble at times. Curved lines are a lot harder to execute than straight ones, but remember to keep the same attitude no matter what---engage your whole arm, use the ghosting method, and be confident :)

    Ellipses in Planes

    • You only drew around the ellipses two full turns in the second sheet, which is the correct way to go about this exercise.

    • You clearly did your best to have the ellipses touch all four edges of the planes.

    • The lines did wobble at times. Again, always be mindful of your attitude when making each and every stroke. That should be your top priority :)

    Funnels

    • You only drew around the ellipses two full turns in the second sheet, which is the correct way to go about this exercise.

    • The ellipses did fit snugly against each other and the edges of the funnels.

    • The ellipses align to the central minor axis very well!

    Boxes

    Plotted Perspective

    • The student did use a ruler.

    • The vertical lines were all perpendicular to the horizon line.

    • The horizontal edges were correctly plotted back to the vanishing points.

    Rough Perspective

    • The work was correctly done in one point perspective and it was placed in the middle of the horizon line.

    • The front and back faces are all rectangular.

    • The line extensions were applied correctly, extending the depth lines.

    • The straight lines should be drawn only once, using the ghosting method.

    Rotated Boxes

    • You did lay out the vertical and horizontal axes and added the squares at the end of each axis, but you should've done it in a 1:1 aspect ratio.

    • The gaps weren't drawn very consistently.

    • The boxes are rotating.

    • You didn't draw through all the boxes.

    • You actually drew more boxes than what was instructed, which is probably the result of the whole composition being rectangular instead of square.

    Organic Perspective

    • Overall, you executed the lines very well and are clearly using the ghosting method.

    • In some sets of parallel edges the lines are actually parallel or even diverging. Always strive to converge the lines back to the same imaginary vanishing point when planning the execution of parallel edges.

    Next Steps:

I'd suggest you redo the last two exercises as thoroughly as possible :) Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much! Yeah, I wanted it to look as if the whole scene was being seen from the perspective of one of the cow plushies lol I'm glad I managed to get the point across!

Sketching: The Basics

Sketching: The Basics

A lot of folks have heard about Scott Robertson's "How to Draw" - it's basically a classic at this point, and deservedly so. It's also a book that a lot of people struggle with, for the simple reason that they expect it to be a manual or a lesson plan explaining, well... how to draw. It's a reasonable assumption, but I've found that book to be more of a reference book - like an encyclopedia for perspective problems, more useful to people who already have a good basis in perspective.

Sketching: The Basics is a far better choice for beginners. It's more digestible, and while it introduces a lot of similar concepts, it does so in a manner more suited to those earlier in their studies.
