Same to you, good luck on the 250 boxes challenge!

Thank you for the critique! I will definitely use the lesson 2 exercise for future warm-ups, they're much more challenging but fun than the lesson 1 exercises. I can't wait for the next lesson!

Hi, I will be critiquing your work.

    • You’re right about the wobbles on your lines, remember that it is always more important to focus on confidence than accuracy so it’s important to fully commit to the line, and it’s alright to overshoot the lines, accuracy will build on top of confidence. Just take your time and it will get better.

    • I noticed that your lines for the superimposed lines exercise tend to arc a lot (the ones where you are going, it does look like it gets better on the other exercises. Remember to ghost and arc to the opposite direction for future lessons and eventually your lines will stop arching.

    • Most of your ellipses actually look confident enough, if you’re struggling to focus while trying to ghost them take some time to relax before committing to it.

    • Remember that ellipses should only be drawn over2 or 3 times. While this is the most noticeable thing I see from your ellipses, I don’t think it is too big of a concern, just keep it in mind for future Drawabox exercises.

    • Sometimes your ellipses in the table are not touching each other. This is more noticeable for the ones that are separated by wavy sections. Again, I don’t think it’s anything to worry about, just keep it in mind if you want to redo this exercise as a warmup.

    • It’s alright to have some of your ellipses go outside of the boundary box or be in different sizes. It’s a common issue for most lesson 1 submissions and from what I’ve seen it’s not very noticeable, so keep it up!

    • For the funnels exercise, I’m not exactly sure what you mean by ellipses not reaching the edges. Is it about not having the ellipses go further out? I don’t think that is a mistake so you don’t have to worry too much.

    • For the rough perspective exercise, you should keep the width parallel to the horizon and the height perpendicular to it. It looks like this is just because of your lines wobbling and arcing, just keep it in mind for future exercises.

    • I haven’t seen someone use vanishing points while doing the rotated boxes exercise before, I don’t think it has a large exercise but in my opinion it’s better to not plot them on the paper.

    • There are perspective issues and mistakes for rotated boxes and organic perspective, but you will work more on it on the 250 boxes challenge, so you shouldn’t worry too much about it.

And that’s it! I think you are ready to move on and continue to the 250 box challenge. I really liked the notes you added to the submission, other ones usually just leave their submission blank so it’s nice to see your thought process and why you made certain decisions.

Good luck on the 250 boxes challenge!

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 boxes challenge. Remember to not rush, take breaks often, and apply the 50/50 rule. If you have any questions you can ask through the Questions / Discussions page on the home page of Drawabox or the discord server (in #basic-challenges). If you have any questions feel free to reply to me.

Hi, welcome to drawabox. I will look at your work today. What I will be looking for are just some general mistakes found in a lot of lesson 1 work, so even if you have a lot of points I listed here that does not mean you should get a revision, it's just a reminder of some mistakes to avoid whenever you do the exercise again. If however IU feel you have missed tthe point of the exercise or not have understood enough of it to move on, I will recommend that you do a revision.

It looks like you have been awaiting feedback for around a month. If you want to get feedback faster you can join the drawabox discord and go to the #critique-exchange section. With that out of the way:

    Lines

    • For the superimposed lines exercise there seems to be a bit of fraying on both the start and end of the line. While fraying on the end is to be expected you should always try to avoid fraying on the front. if possible you should always make an effort to place your pen carefully on the starting point.

    • There's some wobbliness on your lines but it looks more like you were struggling to use the shoulder for the first time, so I'll let it pass.

    • On some lines there seems to be a smaller line or mark made to connect them together. Remember that you should never repeat a line in Drawabox, unless otherwise stated (for example, repeating lines on the outer edge of a box for the 250 boxes challenge).

    Ellipses

    • Your ellipses are drawn more than three times, remember that in drawabox you should only draw through them 2 or 3 times, preferably twice.

    • Some ellipses on the table of ellipses and Ellipses in planes are reaching outside the boundary, and some on funnels are not reaching the boundary (they have to be closely packed).

    • On funnels, specifically for the one in the bottom right corner, it looks like you were still unsure what the minor axis for it is supposed to be. Just keep in mind the minor axis is the line that divides ellipses in two.

    Boxes

There aren’t any noteworthy things that I see in the boxes section, except for maybe some perspective issues on rotated boxes and organic perspective, which you will work on in the 250 boxes challenge.

It looks like you have understood everything that you need to move, with most of the exercise not having any major mistakes and are ready to move on to the 250 boxes challenge. As long as you keep these points in mind for future exercises you should be on the right track.

P.S when you submit your exercises, it would really help for others critiquing if it was posted chronologically (from the first exercise until the last in order) or keep pages together (pages of your table of ellipses and ellipses in planes are separated by other pages in between, for ex

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 boxes challenge. If you don't mind you should join the discord to ask for more specific feedback and get guaranteed critiques (as long as you critique the works of others).

    Hello, welcome back!

Your rotated boxes looks good. You have already done the corners like I said and are now ready to move on to the 250 boxes challenges.

I want to apologise for not reviewing your work sooner. I'm happy that you were able to come back after all these months though, thank you for sending the revisions.

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 boxes challenge. Remember to do regular warmups, apply the 50/50 rule, and take as much time as you need. if you need any help you can ask the community here on in the discord.

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

Hi, welcome to Drawabox. I will be critiquing your work.

Before we start I want to say that it is better for the images to be sorted in order. Currently it is done in reverse order with the rotated boxes page at the very end. For future submissions keep this in mind.

    Lines

There are wobbles on some lines, but it looks like it gets more confident the further you are in the lesson.

While not a complaint of the exercise itself, I think you could have decreased the space around the ghosted planes. The exercise page itself suggests to put the planes closer as written here

    Ellipses

Your table of ellipses has too much columns. While this is not a problem or mistake of the exercise itself you should still follow the instructions. Other than that it looks great, you were able to fit in the ellipses nicely and packed tightly, but I did noticed something else which is…

Some of your ellipses in tables of ellipses are bumpy instead of smooth. Remember to prioritise smoothness over accuracy.

Some of the ellipses in the funnels exercise are not split into 2 symmetrical halves. This is more noticeable for the ellipses at the ends of the funnels.

    Boxes

While the rotated boxes looks a bit messy, you still tried to rotate the boxes correctly. Remember that this exercise is not for making good looking boxes but to introduce a foreign concept that you are probably not able to do. The biggest issue I see here is the upper-left corner of the exercise. The spacing between the boxes is much farther than the other exercises, the lines of the boxes are not drawn with the neighbouring edges (This is a bit confusing, so I’m going to link what I meant here), and you did not crosshatch the sides of the boxes. Other than that the exercise is good enough for now.

There are some perspective issues in organic perspective. Keep this in mind for the 250 boxes challenge.

The things I pointed out are not too important to request any revisions. I think you have shown enough understanding of the material and are ready to move on to the 250 boxes challenge. If you have any further questions feel free to reply to me.

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 challenges. Take previous exercises as warmups, take as much time as you need, and don't forget about the 50/50 rule. If you have any questions you can ask the community here or through discord.

Hello, welcome to Drawabox. I will be reviewing your work. Before I continue I want to say that this is one of, if not, the best lesson 1 submission I have seen, congratulations! Keep doing what you do!

    • Sometimes your lines have wobbles, usually towards the end of it. It’s much more better to overshoot instead of undershooting it. Over time your lines will get more accurate but for now it’s alright to overshoot.

    • Remember that the lines in ghosted planes should intersect at the same point (the middle of the plane).

    • Most of the time your ellipses are confident, smooth and drawn over twice, but you should also draw them touching each other. One thing that helped me is to think of the sides of the boxes and other ellipses as boundaries the ellipses I am drawing must touch (similar to plotting my points in ghosted lines). It looks like you are aware of this and on some ossxsx

    • Sometimes your ellipses go outside the boundaries of the table, funnels and planes. The ellipses should be touching the boundary but not go outside of it.

    • Your funnels are good. You can always redo them whenever you feel the need to but in my opinion it is good enough to move on. One of the funnels looks like it was done freehand, remember to use a circular object to help you instead of freehanding the funnels.

    • Something to note here is that some of your ellipses in the funnels exercise is not split into two equal halves. It mostly happens at the end of the funnels and I thought I should mention it.

    • You should not draw three rotated boxes on the sides, as explained here. I will let it pass though as it looks like you understand the exercise enough.

    • There are some perspective issues on organic perspective. You don’t have to redo it though since you will be working on your perspective at the 250 boxes challenge.

It looks like you have a clear understanding of the lesson. Most of the exercise do not have any major mistakes aside from the table of ellipses not having ellipses touching each other, but it looks like you did it better at the end of the table / other ellipse exercises. I think you have understood enough for lesson 1 and are ready to move on to the 250 boxes challenge, good luck.

Hello, welcome to Drawabox. I will be critiquing your work here.

The two biggest problem that keeps happening is chicken scratching. On some lines instead of ghosting you do some chicken scratching instead. Remember that this is not how lines are drawn in Drawabox, each and every line in Drawabox should be made while thinking about where they start/end, ghosting them, and executing a continuous, confident stroke. Every line is a ghosted line exercise (with the exception of the first superimposed line exercise, since you do that before ghosted lines) even curved lines, and everything you are taught there should apply to every stroke you make in Drawabox (unless you are told otherwise, like using a ruler for some exercises). Remember to treat each and every line as if it is still on the ghosted lines exercise.

Another common thing I see is wobbliness and arching. All you have to do for this one is to follow the ghosted planes exercise for every stroke, just like last time. There are solutions on the lines page for wobbliness and arching.

. Your ellipses are messy and bumpy. Just like with lines, it looks like you lack confidence while drawing your ellipses. Ellipses also follow the ghosting method, plot your point, ghost over it, and execute a confident, continuous ellipse. For plotting the points think of the sides of the boxes/other ellipses as the points, and the ellipse you are going to make will touch each of these sides.

Your ellipses are drawn over more than once. Most of the time this is done to hide mistakes. Remember to only draw through them 2-3 times, not more, not less.

Every line mistake I have already mentioned occurs in your boxes exercises along with the solutions. Some things I have noticed is that you make more chicken scratched strokes instead of ghosted lines. Remember that ghosted lines applies in all lines in Drawabox unless otherwise stated.

There are a lot of perspective issues in rotated boxes. Remember that the lines of one side of the box should converge towards the same vanishing point on the line, as explained by the image here. Because the lines do not follow this the boxes do not look like as if they are being rotated. While the exercise page states that you will struggle with problem and you should not worry over the results, you still have to try to make sure that they are rotated, and it does not look like they are.

Another thing to point out is that some of your boxes share vanishing points. Since they are rotating they should not share vanishing points.

While there are perspective issues in organic perspective, it is not a priority that requires a redo since you will be working on it more at the 250 boxes challenge.

I think you still need to do more to understand the lesson. I will be requesting a revision here of the Table of Ellipses exercise and Rotated boxes.

Table of Ellipses: Around three rows is enough. This is assigned for you to make more smooth ellipses drawn over twice since most of your problems with ellipses occurs in this exercise.

Rotated boxes: One corner is enough. This is assigned for you to make lines which are ghosted and executed smoothly and confidently. Remember to reread the page and do line exercises as warmups. While doing this I want you to try to make the lines of the rotated boxes converge so that they rotate and to apply ghosted lies on the lines here.

That is all. I hope you were able to understand this. If not feel free to reply to me here or ask in the discord server.

    Next Steps:

Redo three rows of Table of Ellipses and one corner of rotated boxes. Remember to reread the pages of each and apply the ghosting method on the lines and ellipses.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello, I'll be reviewing your lesson 1 work. I will mostly be looking at where your weaknesses are and pointing them to you to improve., as well as giving some of my suggestions for improving your work (If there are any). Sorry for the long wait, I've been working on this since April but I got busy with the 250 boxes challenge and came back a few months later. I hope it wasn't too long for you.

    LINES

    • For the superimposed lines exercise and the ghosted lines exercise the lines are fraying from both sides. This is more noticable on your curves from superimposed lines and your lines for ghosted lines. The second page of superimposed lines doesn't fray as much though so you're heading towards the right path, but ghosted lines continue to have this. If you are still struggling then try to place your pen precisely on the starting point.

    • Your lines sometimes forms an arc. This is noticable for ghosted lines but it has been reduced in ghosted planes.

    • On ghosted planes and beyond, your lines are mostly confident. It's not entirely accurate and some of the previous mistakes are still present but if you keep practicing (through warmups and future exercises) then it will get better on its own. Remember to focus more on confidence than accuracy.

    ELLIPSE

    • For your table of ellipses, your ellipses are smooth and mostly tight. The bigger circles floats a bit but on the second page it starts to fit in. Floating still happens for ellipses in planes, so try to put more time into ghosting them in the future.

    • Your ellipses in tables of ellipse and ellipses in planes are drawn over more than 3 times. Yu should always draw over around 2 or 3 times, no more no less. Ellipses in funnels are drawn over less but some ellipses still have them.

    • The minor axis in the funnels area is supposed to divide the ellipses in two equal halves, but sometimes it divides the ellipses unequally. This is not severe enugh for a revision, just keep it in mind for future exercises.

    Boxes

    • Your lines are just like it was from the lines exercise, but I noticed some repeating lines. Try not to repeat lines that are wobbly or riddled with mistakes, unless it actually misses by a lot.

    • Your rotated boxes looks good but for future attempts at this exercises you need to have more boxes on the corners. You currently only have 1 but as written here you should put 4 rotated boxes.

    • There are some perspective issues in organic perspective. This shouldn't warrant revisions as you will get more practice on perspective on the 250 boxes challenge.

I think you still need togo back to the rotated boxes exercise and add the other boxes. When you are done, submit them by replying to this critique. Other than that your work should be good enough for the 250 boxes challenge.

I know it 's been a while since you submitted this, you might not even be here anymore when I post this. But if you do come back and want to get your work reviewed, you should join the discord. That way you can get your work reviewed simply by asking someone else to review it 1 week after posting. Anything after lesson 1 will require ou to review the work of others (like what I am doing) so you are also giving back to the community.

    Next Steps:

Go back to your old rotated box page or redo the rotated box exercise with the four boxes in each corner.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

The Science of Deciding What You Should Draw

The Science of Deciding What You Should Draw

Right from when students hit the 50% rule early on in Lesson 0, they ask the same question - "What am I supposed to draw?"

It's not magic. We're made to think that when someone just whips off interesting things to draw, that they're gifted in a way that we are not. The problem isn't that we don't have ideas - it's that the ideas we have are so vague, they feel like nothing at all. In this course, we're going to look at how we can explore, pursue, and develop those fuzzy notions into something more concrete.
