Also, with regard to the subdivisions in the orthographic study, we have to place the forms according to their relative positions with the subdivisions. But how will we know where each subdivision line is? Do we have to imagine it or is there a more accurate way?

Thank you for clarifying my doubts!

Textures are really difficult for me, because they're not only testing your spatial reasoning skills but also your patience...

The part about the holes and the walls was really helpful

    Questions regarding lesson 6 but I couldn't copy-paste them

Regarding the placement of forms in the orthographic study, do we have to subdivide and determine the location of every form we see, even if they're small or too many?(eg keys of a keyboard )

Also, do we have to draw an orthographic study of every plane(top, bottom, lateral)(or in other words,6 studies for each plane of the box)? But in the demos, only a few planes were selected/studied. How to select planes for the orthographic study ?

Thank you for taking the time to critique my work! The diagrams and critique provided has really been insightful, and I can identify where I am cutting short. However, I didn't understand the part about the beer can/tea pot and the enclosing box and need more clarification.

You seemed to have improved with the revision! Continue practicing this during the warmups, and keep the said points in mind.

Good luck for the next challenges and lessons

    Critique for lesson 6:

    1) Form intersections-

*draw more number of shapes on the page, and draw them close to each other, rather than spacing some out and forming 'groups' of shapes

*while draing the intersections, try to visualise how the shapes coming in contact interact and draw the intersections accordingly. Some of the intersections you drew look off

    2) Objects-

*the objects look believable and appear to be with correct proportions.

*you can use lineweight and cast shadows to organise your lines and make the object stand out from the rest of the construction lines.

    *revision- 1 page form intersections

Thank you for clarifying my doubts!

I was really having a hard time with this, and i was worrying about whether I was doing something wrong. But i guess I was investing my energy to the wrong thing, and should really focus on the more important thing, that is to learn.

    Critique for lesson 1-

    • Superimposed lines- they are quite confident and are only fraying in one side most of the time, which is ideal.

*Ghosted lines- The lines here are also confident.Keep practicing the ghosting method throughout the course, and it will get easier the more you practice it. It's still very good for a beginner though.

If you find yourself arching your lines too much in a particular direction (up or down), try to purposefully draw/arch your lines in the opposite direction to draw straighter lines.

*Ghosted planes+ ellipses in planes- The lines of the planes are good. Try to draw the ellipses in such a way that they are perfectly encapsulated in the plane (i.e.touching all 4 corners of the plane) . Also, try to draw them tightly and concisely (with not too many lines fraying/separating from each other,). Keep practicing them in the warmups.

This applies to all other exercises with ellipses too.

*Box exercises (plotted perspective, rotated boxes, rough perspective, organic perspective) - Your boxes look believable and in correct perspectives. This is a major achievement, especially in lesson one. You

can learn more about boxes in the 250 box challenge, although they are pretty great now as well. Keep practicing it though, so that you can fully grasp on the concepts.

In short, you did well on lesson one and have learned the major concepts and foundational skills. Best of luck for your journey in this course.

    Critique for 250 box challenge:

You have seemed to grasp the concepts of this challenge, which should mean that you have understood about 3D space and spatial relationships problems too.

Although your improvement is apparent from the beginning to the end of the exercise, here are a few remarks you can keep in mind to help you make boxes easily in the future:

*The inner corner- This is a problem faced by the majority of the people doing this challenge and it's justified since it's quite difficult to nail it perfectly with the other sides of the box. Here is a reference which you can use to learn how to improve it-

You can also use a different approach to tackle this problem better-

*Ghosting lines- Although you have tried to use this method and have drawn many lines (and boxes) confidently, you seemed to have been hesitant while drawing some lines, even at the latter pages of the challenge. Prioritize confidence over accuracy and dont hesitate to make mistakes as you learn from them. A tip to draw straighter lines is to arch your lines slightly towards the opposite direction (if they are arching downwards, try to arch your lines slightly upwards and vice versa)

In conclusion, you have made significant progress and are ready for the next exercise. Keep the mentioned points into consideration, and apply them in the future exercises and warm-ups.

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
