Alright thanks for the response! I wasn't sure since it's been a VERY long time for me.

Thank you so much for the critique! The texture exercises gave me the most trouble in this lesson, so I'll make sure to apply what you said about cast shadows and drawing shadow shapes instead of lines when I do the 25 Texture Challenge.

Nice work! Your lines look a lot cleaner and you did the line correction method correctly this time. I'll mark your homework as complete so that you can move on to the 250 Box Challenge. Take care! :)

Fineliner pens are only hard requirements if you are submitting for official critique which in this case you are not so using a pencil for a few exercises isn't a big deal (although it is recommended that you use pens anyway). Regarding your second point it's fine to upload the ghosted planes with ellipses already on them as many people have done that before.

Lines: Your Superimposed Lines look great in both pen and pencil! Not much to say about that. Ghosted Lines aren't that bad either only a little bit of wobble in a couple of lines. Now for Ghosted Planes you didn't have to make separate pages for this exercise and the Ellipses in Planes, as you could have taken a picture of them before you added ellipses or taken a picture with ellipses on them (either way works). But I am mentioning this because in total you ended up with 3 pages of Ghosted Planes which is more than what is assigned. This is considered grinding and Uncomfortable explains why we don't grind out exercises on this page here https://drawabox.com/lesson/0/3/grinding But you did great work on this exercise so good work!

Ellipses: On Tables of Ellipses I think you improved as you went along with this exercise. The ellipses look a little more smooth and confident on the second page. I think you should practice drawing through your ellipses just 2 times (3 times is fine but 2 is ideal so that your ellipses look less messy). On Ellipses in Planes, your ellipses look really messy and some of them are clearly drawn through more than 2-3 times. On Funnels, some of your ellipses are misaligned with the minor axis. Keep this in mind when you practice these exercise in the future.

Boxes: On Rough Perspective, you showed improvement throughout the exercise but you forgot to do the line correction method so I'll request that you do one more page with the line correction method done for your boxes. You made a good attempt at Rotated Boxes, but I'm surprised at how small you made your boxes. I recommend when you come back to this exercise in the future that you make the boxes bigger. I think your pages for Organic Perspective look great! I won't critique you too much on these last two exercises since they are difficult exercises and you'll improve on drawing boxes in the 250 Box Challenge.

I think you should do one more page of Rough Perspective properly with the line correction method done. After you submit that I'll see if you're ready for the 250 Box Challenge. Take care!

Congrats on completing Lesson 1! I'll review your work and see if you're ready to move on.

Lines: Your Superimposed Lines don't look too bad! There's a bit of fraying but that'll decrease in time with more practice. I suggest that you practice more curvy and wavy lines for more of a challenge. Ghosted Lines look good, but there is a bit of wobble in some of your lines. Always prioritize smooth, confident lines over accuracy as the quality of your lines is what's more important. On your Ghosted Planes, I noticed you repeated your lines a couple of times. We want to get into the habit of drawing a line and moving on no matter how far off it was, because we don't want to encourage messy line work.

Ellipses: On Tables of Ellipses, I don't think you did too bad. Same thing with lines, we want to prioritize smooth, confident ellipses over accuracy. Overall, you did well on this exercise. Some of your ellipses on Ellipses in Planes look weirdly shaped. Try drawing them at an angle to maintain the shape and evenness of the ellipse while hitting all four sides of the plane. You did great on Funnels! A couple of ellipses are very slightly misaligned, but I'm probably being a little nitpicky on that one.

Boxes: You did well following the instructions on Rough Perspective, but the one thing I will say is that you did repeat your lines again like you did on the previous lines exercises, and I already explained why we shouldn't do that so keep that in mind. You did pretty well on Rotated Boxes as well which is impressive since this is one of the hardest exercises in Lesson 1. You did a decent job on Organic Perspective. The boxes are spaced a little too far apart (ideally you want them to overlap) and you could have exaggerated the scale of the boxes as well.

You did really well on Lesson 1 and are ready to move on to the 250 Box Challenge. Come back to these exercises for warm ups in the future and good luck on the rest of Drawabox! :)

Hey congratulations on completing Lesson 1! I'll review your work and see if you're ready to move on with the course.

Lines: Your Superimposed Lines look decent. There's a lot of fraying on some of your lines, but you showed some improvement on the second page of your work. Your lines look wobbly and you repeated some of them on Ghosted Lines. When you are drawing lines, always prioritize smooth, confident lines over accuracy and take your time. And when we draw our lines we never want to repeat them, just draw a line and then move on no matter how far off the line is. Also you did submit 2 pages of this assignment when we're only supposed to do 1 page. Uncomfortable explains why we don't do more work than assigned on this page https://drawabox.com/lesson/0/3/grinding Your Ghosted Planes look decent, but I noticed one of your planes was unfinished on the second page. Before submitting homework to the website, make sure that all of it is fully completed as any unfinished work is considered a partial submission. However, I won't request revisions for that this time because you were only missing one plane.

Ellipses: The Tables of Ellipses look good! Just like with lines we want to make sure we draw ellipses confidently and prioritizing that over accuracy. On Ellipses in Planes, a lot of your ellipses look weirdly shaped and deformed. It felt like you were breaking the evenness and shape of the ellipse so that you can hit all sides of the plane. Instead, draw your ellipses at an angle that way they hit all sides of the plane without looking deformed. Your Funnels are alright but the line quality of your ellipses looks wobbly and many of them are misaligned with the funnel. I suggest that you do this one again and this time take your time and practice ghosting your ellipses carefully.

Boxes: For Rough Perspective, you have a lot of errors for this exercise. First of all you're supposed to have 3 frames on each page. You only have one frame for both pages which is technically less than what a single page is supposed to have. Secondly, you repeated your lines a lot which I've already stated why we don't do that before. And finally, you did not do the line correction method correctly. You're not supposed to plot the correction lines back to the vanishing point, only back to the horizon lines. Plotting correction lines back to the horizon line shows us how far off we were from the vanishing point. I'm going to request that you do 2 proper pages of exercise again fixing the mistakes you made previously. I think you made a decent attempt at Rotated Boxes. There are many perspective errors made in your work, but I won't be too harsh on you since it is a very difficult exercise. Although you did repeat your lines a lot, which again is a big no-no. Organic Perspective doesn't look too bad. Again same with Rotated Boxes I won't be too harsh on you since this one is tough for many beginners.

Before moving on to the 250 Box Challenge, you should redo some assignments, specifically Funnels and Rough Perspective. When you complete your revisions I'll review them and see if you're ready to move on. Take care! :)

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
