Thanks for your critique Tofu! Looking forward to moving to lesson 2.

I feel like I understood the mechanics well, but many times it happened that I either made a mistake while drawing a line, or that my intuition of where the VP should be sitting doesn't work well enough to not have edge pairs. I hope I will be able to get them right soon.

Thank you for taking the time to give such a detailed reply!

Your handmade tool looks handy too, I will definitely give it a try.

Just to clarify, more than it being too difficult to set up the frame neatly enough, I was a bit confused by the fact that also in the video uncomfortable says something like 'it doesn't have to be too precise' or 'draw a perpendicular line more or less at the center of the first one'.

So I thought that even with the funnel's frame not having to be perfect, the resulting ellipses had to somehow be able to fit all requirements, and that I was missing something about that.

It's not about the arcs, but the line that has to travel through them. That line will be every ellipses' minor axis. And that has not been measured, therefore it will always be tilted even so slightly compared to the arcs' internal trajectory. If then every ellipse should be drawn with the same degree of rotation and in contact with the funnel's borders and the ellipse before and after it, there's no chance all the ellipses will be evenly divided by their shared minor axis!

Hi Jifisa, here's my humble critique of your homework. I hope I'm doing right by offering one even if I've only completed lesson 1 myself.

First, I notice that you didn't upload the two pages of organic perspective, and while homeworks don't have to be complete when submitting for non official critique, you mentioned that this one should be. So these should be uploaded as well.

Starting with the parallel lines, I think you're off to a good start with your strokes being uniform and confident, and showing a little divergence only on one end. I think this demonstrates you're engaging your shoulder properly.

Your page of straight lines also looks nice. While there are some that are overshooting and some that are undershooting, the general sense of direction seems to be there with a decent degree of accuracy while maintaining a confident stroke. One thing I feel like I should point out is that the pressure is taken off quite early in most cases, resulting in a line that tapers half way through its length; you should try to have a continuous line weight all the way till the end dot.

The two pages of planes seem to be on point, woth some of the lines being remarkably straight. In the shorter lines I can spot a bit of wobbling, which I suspect is a sign of you resorting back to your wrist rather than your shoulder.

Your tables of ellipses are really nice, and I feel like a considerable improvement can be noticed already between the first and the second page. As you should, you're more focused on confidence than accuracy, and you try to draw fully twice over the same ellipse. One remark could be that when you fill in a hole with a custom ellipse, this shouldn't be deformed, but still have a consistent degree.

The ellipses in planes look great, and once again I feel that there's visible improvement noticeable in just two pages.

In the funnels, keep in mind that the central line represents an ellipse that's completely rotated towards the viewer, therefore I don't think you should be drawing an ellipse through it. There are some issues with your ellipses changing orientation on their minor axis, however this is at times due to the line running through the funnel not being perfectly centered, since it has to be drawn without being measured precisely (I've just addressed this by posting a question to the community).

Your two vanishing point perspective looks good, maybe try only drawing one precise lime that runs from a box's corner to the vp, as we're using a ruler for this one, I feel this page has the potential to look a bit tidier, be sure to take your time and not rush through it!

For the rotated boxes, I think that one thing you could've taken more advantage of would be to have less space between contiguous boxes, so that you could use the first drawn box as a reference for the beginning of the second one. Also, when drawing a rotated box, the vp is sliding on the axis it rotates towards, so you should have two sides tilting more inwards. The result is that all your quadrants look dissimilar to one another: I think it would be easier to finish a whole quadrant to have as a reference when starting the others.

I hope this comments are valuable, overall I feel this looks like a solid submission and that you're off to a great start!

    Seb

Hi Rob, I don't know of it's customary to reply to critiques and ask questions, but in the first place I'd like to thank you for this very detailed review of my assignments.

I'm surprised that you consider my ellipses as coming along nicely, since I struggle a lot with those. Being able to pass over the same one twice feels almost impossible, especially if I have to contain them within small borders (like in the funnels). Should I grip the fine liner less firmly, going for a floaty feeling or carve them decidedly on the page?

Concerning the external silhouette of the boxes, I feel that I can never pass precisely over the same line. I'm really trying to use the shoulder all the time, but it becomes very imprecise when the lines are shorter. Should I try moving more from the elbow in these cases?

Third and last, I'm starting with the 250 boxes now (pheew...) and after I've completed a page of 5 I am trying to check the convergence with a red pencil. How long should these red marks be? I'm trying to have them go as far as possible, but my page looks like a red disaster with lines piercing all of my other boxes, to the point that it's difficult to track back to which box they belong!

    Best,

    Seb

I think it's recommended to wait for feedback before moving on to next lessons or challenges

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
