Hello! I will be handling this critique this time.

Superimposed Lines: some of your lines are fraying on both ends, but they’re only 2 or 3. Good job! Work on the arcs though.

Ghosted Lines: try your best to not keep your lines at a consistent size. They’re arching here a bit. Work on moving your shoulder and ghost your lines a hundred times might help. If they keep arcing, try to consciously arch to the opposite direction.

Ghosted Planes and Ellipses in Planes: lines are arching; you may feel nervous. Also, some of the lines of your planes don't connect to the dot, so work out on drawing with a goal in mind! Pay attention to the ellipses, so they can touch all the sides of the plane.

You did a great job drawing through ellipses 2 to 3 times.

Tables of Ellipses: you kept the ellipses within the bounds–great. Do not forget of ghosting and, above all, confidence. Have a concrete goal in mind, take a deep breath, and use your shoulder. Don't be afraid of changing the ellipses size too. You grasped the purpose of this exercise.

Funnels: the minor and major axis have cutted the ellipses into symmetrical halves, well done. However, the exercise required you to use the different sizes of an ellipse.

    Plotted Perspective: nice work.

Rough Perspective: you haven’t had a big problem with perspective here, but watch out to not tremble. Weight lines must parallel to the horizon line and height lines must be perpendicular to the horizontal line, it seems like you got this.

Rotated Boxes: I think your most difficulty was the corners. Look out for the boxes so they touch (close and parallel to) each other. Your boxes are arching to the opposite side downwards too.

Seek for symmetry; think of them as it was a ball.

Organic Perspective: you remembered that the angle degrees between each line of the Y should be equal to or greater than 90°. Some of the lines are not connected to the dot. If you make a mistake, try to not repeat the line; just keep going.

    Congrats!

I Say you're ready to move on to 250 Boxes Challenge.

Hello! I will be handling this critique this time.

Superimposed Lines: I noticed some of your lines are fraying on both ends. However some of them don’t look to be wobbling–good job. It seems you’re confident, but keep on ghosting the lines.

Ghosted Lines: try your best to not keep your lines at a consistent size. Your lines are arching here a bit. Work on moving your shoulder and ghost your lines a hundred times might help. If they keep arcing, try to consciously arch to the opposite direction.

Ghosted Planes and Ellipses in Planes: lines are still arching; you may feel nervous or don't ghost them. Also, some of the lines of your planes don't connect to the dot, so work out on drawing with a goal in mind!

You did a great job drawing through ellipses 2 to 3 times.

Tables of Ellipses: aim for keeping the ellipses within the bounds, ghosting, drawing them through each other, and, above all, confidence. Have a concrete goal in mind, take a deep breath, and use your shoulder. Don't be afraid of changing the ellipses size too.

Funnels: the minor and major axis should cut the ellipses into symmetrical halves. I'd recommend you to use a ruler or a hard object to draw the curves. Remember this exercise requires you to use the different sizes of an ellipse. Again, don’t forget to ghost and use your shoulders.

Plotted Perspective: it looks like you've got the purpose of the exercise!

Rough Perspective: for this one, draw dots and ghost lines to know where it'll be connecting–although you haven’t had a big problem with perspective here, most of the lines are not connecting and trembling. Focus on drawing confidently and ghost. Weight lines must be parallel to the horizon line and height lines must be perpendicular to the horizontal line.

Rotated Boxes: some of the lines are trembling, not connecting, and are not clear. You did a good job, though! You grasped the purpose of this one.

Organic Perspective: the angle degrees between each line of the Y should be equal to or greater than 90°. Same advice as above—draw from your shoulder, ghosting because some of the lines, again, are not connecting. Also, some lines are not connected to the dot. If you make a mistake, try to not repeat the line; just keep going.

I like how your lines seem clean.

Congrats, you did a great job! Please, if possible, use an ink pen for the next lessons.

Feel free to start the 250 Boxes Challenge.

Hello! I will be handling this critique this time.

Superimposed Lines: I noticed some of your lines are fraying on both ends. They are also wobbling. A wobbling line is a huge problem, when drawing, work on moving your shoulder, ghost your lines a dozen times and draw confidently!

Ghosted Lines: try your best to not keep your lines at a consistent size. Your lines are arching here and seem to wobble a bit—a big improvement from Superimposed Lines. As stated above, work on moving your shoulder, ghost your lines a hundred times, and draw confidently.

Ghosted Planes and Ellipses in Planes: lines are still arching and wobbling. You may feel nervous or don't ghost them. Ghost a lot! You should draw through your ellipses 2 to 3 times and check out if it's touching all (almost all) sides and corners of the plane. Drawing fast doesn't mean confidence though.

Funnels: I do believe they are quite small here. Also, the minor and major axis should be straight and cut the ellipses into symmetrical halves. I'd recommend you to use a ruler or a hard object to draw the curves. Remember this exercise requires you to use the different sizes of an ellipse. Please, take your time to re-read the instructions Uncomfortable made and look for other students exercises.

Plotted Perspective: it seems like you understood the purpose of the exercise after finishing the first section. Right in time!

Height lines should be perpendicular to the horizontal and be straight here. Watch out when establishing the vertical line.

Rough Perspective: For this one, do not try to guess where it's going to be—draw dots and ghost lines to know where it'll be connecting. Focus on drawing confidently and ghost. Weight lines must be parallel to the horizon line and height lines must be perpendicular to the horizontal line.

Congrats for not repeating the lines!

Rotated Boxes: I tell you to redo this one. Here, your boxes should be rotating. Please redo all the materials regarding these exercises.

Organic Perspective: the angle degrees between each line of the Y should be equal to or greater than 90°. Same advice as above—draw from your shoulder, ghosting and confidence since your all lines are wobbling, arching, and it seems like you're not confident. Also, some lines are not connected to the dot. Try foreshortening out, it's cool, but watch out for it. Re-read all the materials about this exercise too. You grasped the concept of boxes becoming smaller the more distant they are.

Congrats! Please warm-up and redo Rotated Boxes.

    Next Steps:

    Redo Rotated Boxes.

Hello! I will be handling this critique.

Superimposed Lines: here's when the use of the right materials makes a difference—the pencil you used is very thick and does not allow you to do what the lesson is proposing you to. Then, I can't critique this part of the exercise.

Ghosted Lines: I think it would be better if you practiced filling an entire page with ghosted lines, such as Comfy (drawabox.com/lesson/1/ghostedlines). I am not sure if it's the pen or not, but it seems like your lines are trembling and arching. This might happen because you are not confident or/and drawing with your shoulder and ghosting the lines. If you're confident, ghosting and drawing with your shoulder but lines are still arching and wobbling, try to practice it a lot and consciously arch in the opposite direction.

Ghosted Planes and Ellipses in Planes: you didn't have to draw 3 sections of planes! You should draw only two pages of planes and then draw an ellipse over each of them. Here, your lines are wobbling again and so do your ellipses. Same instructions as before, and practice a lot with warm-ups. Please upload the other page of Ellipses in Planes. However, you did a good job keeping the ellipses within the planes. You must also be drawing through ellipses 2 to 3 times.

Tables of Ellipses: aim for keeping the ellipses within bounds. Draw through them from 2 to 3 times and check if they are wobbling. You did a great job filling these up too.

Funnels: the minor and major axis should cut the ellipses into symmetrical halves. I'm not sure of what you used to draw the arc, but I'd recommend you to use a ruler (or another one) next time. All the previous critiques for ellipses are also included here.

Plotted Perspective: take care when establishing the vertical line! Moreover, you grasped the purpose of this exercise.

Rough Perspective: you forgot to draw through one of the boxes. For this one, do not try to guess where it's going to be—draw dots and ghost lines to know where it'll be connecting.

Try to not repeat the line. Draw it as if it is correct and move on.

Rotated Boxes: some boxes do note the corners close to each other. You also forgot one box. Try to draw a box and then the other on the opposite side so it'll be more symmetrical.

Organic Perspective: the angle degrees between each line of the Y should be equal to or greater than 90°. Same advice as above—draw from your shoulder, ghosting and confidence since your lines are wobbling and arching a bit and some lines are not connected to the dot. Try foreshortening out, it's cool, but watch out for it.

Congrats! Please, do warm-ups and redo Superimposed Lines. If possible, also redo the rest of the exercises you did complete with other material than ink pen/fine liner.

    Next Steps:

    Redo superimposed lines.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello! Congrats on completing lesson 1.

While writing down this critique, I related to the points I am emphasizing since I did/do the same.

First two pages of your submission: it looks like your lines are fraying on both ends. Try to focus on calmly setting your pen on the starting dot after ghosting lines. Stay peaceful during the process, fast doesn't mean confidence.

The third page follows the same logic as pages 1 and 2. Please set your pen on the starting dot after ghosting lines.

Make sure you are drawing from your shoulder so your lines don't arch.

The fourth and sixth pages: as said before—fast doesn't mean confidence. Your shoulder should also be checked a thousand times before actually drawing. Breathe in and breathe out so you can be less nervous.

Focus on making the ellipse touch each other and all the edges of the planes with no overlapping.

The seventh and eighth pages: the same point as before, lines not connecting to the dot and arching at some point, but nothing that may interfere in the drawing. As stated above, check your shoulder and focus on making the ellipses touch each other within the bound with no overlapping.

On the ninth page: the minor axis and the other line should cut ellipses into 2 symmetrical halves.

Again, do not try to draw too fast, check your shoulder, and ghost infinite times.

The eleventh and twelfth pages: please, do not repeat your lines. Again, focus on connecting lines together on the dots and you should have drawn through your boxes. It looks like you had no confidence here or didn't ghost the lines. Pay attention to arching lines.

The thirteenth page: all advised above for lines. I am not going to say too much about this one, since I am always confused when I look through rotated boxes.

The fourteenth and fifteenth pages: all advised above for lines. Try to ghost before setting dots and set dots before drawing if you haven't done it. Try to breathe in and breathe out to stay relaxed and take breaks to warm up.

    Next Steps:

You're ready to start 250 boxes challenge. Do not forget to warm up.

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
