Hey,
Wonderful, thank you for the feedback, and answering my questions.
I have completed the additional 3 construction only animals. They are in a folder marked as such in the original link.
This time I took more effort to apply 3D shapes to the construction of the animal. I hope i didnt use too many blobs of flesh. I imagined being a sculptor and putting large chunks in then smaller ones when needed instead of resorting to my standard "2D line will do" mentality and connecting forms with a single line.
WIth my head forms I find it difficult to get the muzzle shape correct, and to make sure the flesh is wedged correctly, animals with tight skin (cow and horse) are easier to breakdown than those with lots of flesh and fur (tiger).
I assume that with practice my shapes will become more succinct and I will need fewer to flesh out forms, like a sculptor?
Thanks in advance for the feedback.
Ethan
Thank you for this critique, I appreciate your feedback and I would say that I did find it difficult at times to define leg shapes as sausages. And I definitely tried to stop myself cutting in to the base forms and respect the masses I had already blocked in.
I am having trouble with defining long thin legs with a quick fluid sausage shapes.
Should I do a more fluid but smooth action (with my arm)? Drawing quickly allows me to make a lighter mark but if I'm slower i becomes wobbly and thick. I enjoy building up objects as if sculpting with clay, so I found it hard with long and thin anatomy.
What would be your recommendation/approach for long, thin, rigid segments of insect anatomy?
Thanks again.
Ethan
Hey Uncomfortable,
Thanks for the feedback. I feel that sometimes I try to correct mistakes and think that redrawing over lines will fix the problem, then I look back later and it really didn't help. Thank you for pointing that out.
Along with my use of drop shadows, I still catch myself shading areas and have to stop as it is trying to cover up my failure in the form. I have to work on this too.
I completed the 2nd page and uploaded it into the above link under the appropriate filename.
This was challenging again, as bending the leaves around in perspective presents difficulty with keeping the leaves correctly proportioned. And as you can see sometimes i try fill in black to appear as I know what I am doing.
Let me know if this will suffice as I will do what is necessary to move forward.
Warm regards,
Ethan
Hey Tofu!
Wow, thank you so much for the feedback, really insightful and I really appreciate your time.
In depth and informative, I have a lot to work on.
The textures are definitely something I need to work on, I find it difficult to think in terms of just cast shadows, as can be seen.
I have re-done the homework you have asked for and hopefully this is an improvement. Will do whatefver it takes to move through this learning curve :D
Let me know if you have trouble with the link.
Warm regards,
Ethan
Hey Rob,
Thank you for getting to this so quickly, really appreciate all you feedback.
I'm glad you were able to identify my issues and provide links to the mistakes and how to correct them, this will help immensely.
Thanks again, on to the 250 Boxes!
Cheers,
Ethan
hey Frog! Thank you for this feedback!
I definitely felt that i was doing similar POV's of the boxes, although since i rotated the page a lot it felt as though i was drawing from different angles as i didn't always start with the page at the same angle, am i approaching that incorrectly?
I definitely will try and vary the angle of the lines themselves too, much appreciated :)
Hi Benj,
I just wanted to say this was the most thoughtful and constructive feedback I have ever had. I appreciate the time you have put in to analyzing my work.
I definitely used a ruler on rough perspective boxes, this was my mistake as I read the instructions incorrectly, in future I will use ghosting method. I also need to work on my correction of error lines, I should continue with the box, and my error, rather than correcting. Line weights is also something I completely got carried away and kept ghosting, I need to change that.
Thanks again,
R
Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
