Thank you so much for the critique! I will certainly work the areas you have pointed out!

Your lines here have much less wobble! I'd suggest you keep working on the arcing during warmups. Your rotated boxes are much better here.

You have done an amazing job! Gl on your future artistic endeavours!

Hey ther Apichu, Welcome to DaB! I'm Reboot and today i'll be critiquing your work. I'll be dividing your critique into 3 sections - lines, ellipses and boxes.

    LINES-

Superintendend lines- I notice quite a few lines with fraying on both ends, remember to pay attension to where your line starts. We cannot control the point our lines ends perfectly, no matter how much we ghost but we can control where the line starts

Ghosted lines- One problem I notice here is your lines wobble a lot. Remember- Fluency over accuracy. What is happening is that you are hesitant when yu make your mark, one thing you can do is to move your hand faster. When you slow down while making a mark then your brain subconsiously or consiously autocorrects the line, causing wobble. Noone will judge your lines based of accuracy, you dont have to worry about it at all. A smooth mark that is inaccurate is much more useful than a wobbly mark that is accurate. i suggest you re-read this page- https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/ghostedlines.

Ghosted planes- I have been seeing alot of arcing here. "While this can be related to not drawing from the shoulder (and the smaller arc of motion forcing you into an arcing line), some people will find that they have a natural tendency to arc their lines slightly when attempting to draw one that is straight.

One approach I've heard to correct this is to consciously arc your line slightly in the opposite direction. The expected result is that this conscious adjustment will compensate for the issue and will result in a straight line that does not arc in either direction. Over time and practice, your brain will associate this motion with a straight line, and eventually you won't have to be quite so conscious of it." IF you have the later problem as stated in this quote from the site, one thing I did to help out was to look ate the way my arm moved to see weather or not my arm subconsiously was arcing to one direction, then I would correct it while ghosting.

Before I move one to ellipses I'd like to mention that you must take as much time you need to make your mark. DO the best of your ability and do not rush

    ELLIPSES-

Table Of Ellipses- Your ellipses frequently overlap other ellipses or don't touch all the sides. Your ellipses don't seem to confident either. Theres alot of tapering due to lack of confidence, remember to make fast strokes and keep a consisten speed throught the ellipse so that it doesn't taper. On top of that rememebr to take as much time as you need in the preperations tep, often the reason for lackluster ellipses and lines is that the student doesn't give the time he/she needs to ghost and plan it.

Ellipses on planes- Your ellipses stay in the plane a bit better here but are still quite not confident. I can still see some improvment.

Funnels- Remember that the minor axis should be perfectly in the middle of the c curves, all of them have the minro axis in the incorrect position. Also dont leave any spacing between the ellipses.

    BOXES-

Rough PErspective- Your boxes themselves here are quite good. One problem I see si that you tend to redo a line once you make a mistake, Please do not do this. You should learn to accept your mistakes, as bob ross says, "happy little mistakes".

ROtated boxes- These are amazing! One thing I noticed is that you have made too much spacing between the boxes.

Organic perspective- Your lines here have got a bit better in the arcing side, but theres still a ton of wobble. Soemtimes your liens diverge, remember that the lines converge the further they are from you, but overall you have done a pretty good job.

Overall- You boxes are simply outstanding. The main problem I see is lack of confidence. You have done a good job mate.

Remember to read through the critique throughly.

    Next Steps:

    2 pages of ghosted planes

1 page of table of ellipses

    1 page page of funnels

Hello there Barphil, I'm Reboot, And I'll be critiquing your work! I'll be dividing the critique into three neat little sections, Lines, Ellipses and boxes.

    LINES-

Superintendent lines - Your lines seen to be pretty accurate, although they are very wobbly. I can see this in the later exercises aswell. Remember that a line that is not accurate is still more useful than a wobbly one, this is especially true in later lessons, so you would want to practice fluency of line over accuracy.

The cause of this is that you are hesitant to make a stroke. You are probably not moving your hand fast enough. You see, what is happening is that when you go slowly your brain picks up on any inaccuracy in the lines direction, and you either consiously or subconsiously autocorrect the line. When you make a fast line your brain doesn;t have time to see if you go of track or autocorrect, whats done is whats done. This also makes ghosting(the planning step) More important.

Ghosted Lines- your lines don't arc, but thet are still ver hesitant and unfluent, for which ive already given the fix for above

GHosted planes- Your lines dont wobble ass much but do arc, the main reason for this is that you probably are not suing your shoulders. On the other hand some people have a natural tendency to arc their hands motion(me for example). If thats the case with you then slightly arc it in the opposite direction, one thing that helped me is to see how may hand actually moved while ghosting.

    ELLIPSES-

Table of ellipses- YOur elipses seem pretty smooth, although sometimes they dont touch all ends. Sometimes the ellipse tapers to a certain end. THis si as the speed isn't consistent. When drawing the ellipse, the speed of drawing it should be consisten all the way through

Ellispes on planes- YOu have done a better job of keeping th ellipses within their bods here, although there is still tapering and some of them look hesitant

Funnels- Remember that the minor has to be perfectly in between the c curves, in the funnels where the minot axis is in a correct position the ellipses seem to be aligned pretty well.

    BOXES-

ROugh perspective- You have done a good job here, alothough the lines are still wobbly.

Rotated perspective-This seems pretty good, you get the general idea. Some of your boxes seem incredibly big while others are normal or very small

Organic perspective- once again this is pretty good, sometimes the lines diverge from thep vp but you have the general understanding

Overall- your boxes are very well done, ellipses are pretyy good and lines coul use some tweaking

YOu have done a very good job, godspeed to you and goodluck on your artistic endeavours

    Next Steps:

2 Pages of Ellipses on planes

    1 page of funnels

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Well done, you organic boxes have improved quite much. Your lines are way more confident, especially in your boxes and dont show much arcing, its still not perfect but better.

Keep practicing your lines for atleast 5 min before a session, and add 15 min of ellipses or boxes till your lines dont arc as much anymore. Do remember to take your time ghosting and planning.

Now you can go to the box challenge, hell awaits you

In all seriousnes the box challenge will be difficult, but keep pushing. From experience, that feeling of getting there is so damn good and you will improve on your art alot

    Next Steps:

Move on to The 250 box challenge

Hey there Beer, welcome to DaB, I'm Reboot and I'll be doing your critique today! For you to easily understand your critique I'll be dividing the critique into 3 sections, boxes, ellipses and boxes. Before I start, I'd like to remind you that it's completely okay to make mistakes.

    LINES-

SUPERINTENDENT LINES- I have noticed that there is a lot of arcing here, there are two possible causes-

                                                 1. not using shoulder- If this is the case, always make sure you use your shoulder, it is normal to sometimes slip back into using your wrist, especially when you not used to it but make sure that you take notice of it and start using your shoulders again

                                                 2. Natural tendency- Some people simply have a natural tendency to move the entire hand(including shoulders) In an arcing movement, leading to arcing lines. I had experienced this, and if you are too, then try to slightly arc you hand towards the opposite direction. On top of that, when experiencing this I made sure to actually look at my arms movment to see if it is arcing or not and correct it

Check which of the above might be the cause and use the suggested fixing method to straighten up those damn lines.

GHOSTED LINES- The arcing problem persists here aswell, and i've also noticed a bit of wobbliness. When you go slower you brain takes notice when you go of track and tries to correct it subconsiously leading to a wobbly line. What you can do is move you hand faster, thus not giving your brain a chance to slip into autocorrect.

GHOSTED PLANES- The arcing here is a bit less comparitivally, and there si still a little wobbliness. I won't go into this further since I've already explained the causes and fixes for these problem above.

    ELLIPSES-

ELLIPSES ONE PLANES- Your ellipses are pretty unconfident here but do get improved later on. One thing to remember to keep your ellipses from looking deformed is to make sure that you dont slow down or speed up your arms movement during any given point of drawing the ellipse

TABLE OF ELLIPSES- Your ellipses touch all 4 sides and are pretty confident, but one thing I noticed is that they taper towards a certain end, as mentioned above this is due to you slowing down at one point

FUNNELS- pretty well done, Your ellipses align pretty well with the minor axis(excluding the two bottom ones)

    BOXES-

ROUGH PERSPECTIVE- I notice that soem of you lines diverge from the vp rather than converge, always be careful with that. Try to imagine a straight line from the dot to the vp, it will be hard at first but you will gat there

ROTATED BOXES- This is pretty good! The only problem here that I notice is the rate of foreshortening is higher in one side, making the entire thing look lopsided

ORGANISC PERSPECTIVE- You have done a good job with the scaling of boxes, but sometimes I notice a lot of divergine, a always be mindfull with that.

Overall you have done a pretty good job, please make sure you read through the critique thoroughly to get the best out of it. The main thing u need to improve on are on diverging boxes and line quality.

side note: ALway remember to do your warmups, this will help you A LOT.

    Next Steps:

    1 page of ghosted planes

    1/3 page of organic boxes

for this you only need to do one of the three swoopy lines for a page.

Hey there DarkKing!Welcome to DrawABox, I'm Reboot, and I'll be critiquing today. I'll be dividing your critique into 3 part, lines, ellipses and boxes.

    LINES-

SUPERINTENDED LINES- You have done a really good job here, I'm honestly surprised! Your shorter and medium lines have been done really well!

GHOSTED LINES- You did pretty well, your marks are quite confident but I do see that you have a lot of arcing lines which I have also noticed in superintendent lines. Make sure you use your shoulders, another problem as stated in the site is that some people have a natural tendency for their arm to move in an arcing motion. If this is the case with you slightly make you hand arc in the opposite way that it naturally arcs. I had the natural tendency problem, what personally helped was to actually look at how my arm moved, if it was in an arc id push it up on the next ghost and so on.

Ghosted planes- Once again you have done rlly well, your lines arc a bit less here. One problem I saw, and I have been seeing in multiple exercises is that you are redoing the line when you make a mistake, which is ntoa good habit to develop. You must learn to live with your mistakes, lemme give an example on what you SHOULD do- https://imgur.com/a/HSeNRn7

    ELLIPSES-

Table of ellipses- You have done a good job here aswell, alothough i have noticed that in someplace the ellipses over each other or dont touch all 4 sides, its still pretty good

ellipses on planes- Here aswell they are pretty good, the ellipses here seem to be done before table of ellipse since they are not as confident, I've noticed that the ellipses go out of the plane a few times as well.

funnels- you ellipses here are good, but they dont seem to be alligning with the minor axis, the probem seems to be where the minor axis itself is placed, the minor axis should be placed properly in between the two c curves, there should be equal distance.

    BOXES-

ROUGH PERSPECTIVE- your liens here seem to be quite wobbly, and you havent been plotting the line to the vp properly either. In the first page you seem to be randomly plotting our lines from the vp directly, or atleast it seems so, remember you plot the way the liens you drew go, not how they shoul've gone. You seem to get that idea on the next page, but soemtimes i notice that there are boxes that arent draw through, to not all planes are done. Remember that you have to spend as much time as you need, don't do things haphazourdly and properly read instructions.

Rotated boxes- Your rotated box exercise seems very well done, the original one. As mentioned above you have to live with your mistakes, don't redo any exercise unless asked for in your critique. Your first rotated box exercise was well enough and showed you have an understanding of the topic, meanign you wne tthrough the trouble of doing it again unnessesarily. Also pls dont put slef critiques on the page as mentioned in the site.

Organic perspective- Your aztuall boxes here seem pretty good. I have noticed on a few boxes that you haven't plotted the llines and ghosted, ut rather freehanded. Remember that all lines in this course must be ghosted.

Over all, you have done a great job with your ellipses and boxes. Your lines show a bit of arcing but its okay, reread the ghosting page (https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/ghostedlines) in the site. I have noticed that you redo lines when you make a mistake, so i'd like to remind you to live with your mistakes, it's completely okay to make them aswell.

I hope for you to succeed in your art journey :)

Hey there spruce, welcome to DaB! I'm reboot, and I'll be taking your critique

I'll be dividing it ino three section, lines, ellipses and boxes.

    LINE-

superintendent lines- while the fraying is normal, I doo see A LOT of arcing and wobbling.

PLease make sure that you use your shoudler, and make fast strokes. Remember the it is fluency over acuracy, don't worry if the lien doesnt reach its spot or what not.

Ghosted lines- The lines are better, but the wbble and arcing is still noticable. Make sure you take as much times as you need to make single mark. In the case of arcing, it could be that you aren't using your shoulder, but some people have a natural tendency to arc. If that's the case, the you would want to purposefully arcing it slightly up to get a straight line(https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/ghostedlines- read the mistakes section once again)

    Pret

Ghosted planes- Your lines have less arcing here, some do still arc but it is very little. The wobble however is still there. As mentioned above, check both of the links sent above. " we can still work with a line that is smooth and even, but there's not much that can be done with a wobbly one."

    ELLIPSES-

ellipses on planes- Your ellipses here are very smooth, good job on that. I do see on some of the allipses that they taper towards one end, this could be for two reason- Either you get hesitant while drawing the second half of the ellipse, or that you are trying to centre it to the plane. In the first case keep good speed while drawing the entire ellipse, make sure there are no changes in speed. In the second case remember that you are not trying to align it to the x, but rather are seeing how the ellipse fits into it. Imagine it as table of ellipse, but there is space for only one ellipses.

Table of ellipses- The ellipses here are also pretty smooth, and only very few of them dont touch all the sides. Good job on that!

Funnels- YOu have done a very good job here!

    BOXES-

    Plotted perspective- Pretty good!

Rough perspective- lines are still wobbly here, but I've already mentioned that. The convergence of the line get much better toward the end, good job on that.

Rotated box- SO i traced some of the boxes lines to their own vp, it seems you got the part that the vp moves but not HOW exactly and WHERE it should move.https://imgur.com/a/xoGvXKs.

Basically, the vp moves away from the direction the box rotates to, and goes further back depending on how much it rotated in that direction. I suggest reading through the lesson again and watch the video so you have a better understanding

On the other hand we have scaling, some boxes are very big, while some are quite small.

organic boxes- Your boxes are pretty good, although on some of them I see very extreme foreshortening, remember not to go way to extreme, keep some distance between the vp and box.

Your lines here are better, but I notice that you havent properly ghosted them but rather freehanded them, Always plot your dots and ghost the line before executing the mark

Overall, your boxes and ellipses are pretty good, and your lies have improved however I feel they may need a little more work. You have done a good job, I hope to see your art journey progress! Also do remember to read the critique thoroughly, and check out all the links posted

    Next Steps:

    Ghosted plane

    rotated boxes

This time take in mind what I have told you ,and before starting do specify where your doubt was exactly.

U spend atleast 30 mins just doing one biiiig warmup. From that point you continue. There is no need to restart

It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
