    No problem!

Your boxes seem to be rotating a lot more so good job with that, and hopefully with the 250 box challenge you'll have an even better grasp on how boxes work in 3d space! However I do still see some repeating lines, which I mentioned in the line section of your critique, if you are trying to fix a mistake with your line by drawing a new line over the "mistake" line, it's best to just leave the line as is and move on (Of course that excludes the Superimposed lines exercise, since you are "repeating" the lines in that exercise to build confidence). Besides that, good job on completing Lesson 1 and good luck with the 250 box challenge!

Hi! I'll be critiquing your lesson 1 with help from the official critique guide and Elodin's critique guide.

    Lines

Starting with lines, your lines look confident overall. There doesn't seem to be many signs of wobbling, and most of your lines are accurate. Although some of your lines do seem to be arching especially in the Ghosted Lines exercise, you'll get more used drawing with your shoulder as you do more of the Drawabox exercises, warming up, and according to Elodin's guide "it can be fixed by trying to arch consciously to the opposite direction". On your boxes exercises and one of your lines in the Ghosted lines exercise, I see some repeating lines, which you generally want to avoid if you aren't trying to add line weight. If see that your line is off, it's best to keep the line as is and move on. On the Ghosted planes exercises, you forgot to bisect the plane by adding a cross through the center of the X (https://imgur.com/a/RyZTNbd), so next time you do this exercise remember to do that.

    Ellipses

The main thing you should focus on in the Ellipses in planes is making the ellipse big enough to touch all 4 borders (https://imgur.com/a/gu7IapM), but other than than that, you're ellipses seem both confident and smooth. One thing I would recommend when doing the Funnels exercise next time is trying to Increase the degree of your ellipses as you move outward (https://imgur.com/a/9HW0RLT), since that will help with the future lessons, but if you don't feel comfortable with that yet it's fine, since it is optional.

    Boxes

    Plotted Perspective: Looks perfect

Rough Perspective: On this exercise, you did a good job trying to keep the back shape consistent to the front. Not sure if you're already doing this, but something that is also recommended is using the horizon line as a reference helps keep your lines parallel and perpendicular.

Rotated Boxes: All your boxes seem to be rotating to a certain extent. Remember to keep your gaps even (https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/9a16c189.jpg)

Organic perspective: On some sections of this exercise, the boxes aren't rotating as much as they should be. The lines on the Y shape doesn't have to exactly look like a Y. You can shorten/lengthen some parts of the Y shape, make it the Y shape upside down, or making parts of it wider/narrower (something like this https://imgur.com/a/zidQJHM). Your boxes do look good though and they will get better as you do the 250 box challenge.

    Next Steps:

Half a page of Organic Perspective (basically a single section like this https://imgur.com/a/CYY95zG)

Hi! I will be critiquing your Lesson 1 homework with assistance from the "drawabox lesson 1 critique guide" by Elodin and I'll also be using the official guide on the website

    Superimposed lines

One of the purposes of this exercise is to help with the confidence in your lines, and you did an great job with that. Your lines look confident, and you kept the fraying on one side. As you do more of this exercise your lines will arch less frequently and you will also be a lot more confident!

    Ghosted Lines

your lines are confident, but there is arching in some of the lines which is fine since it is the first time you've done this exercise, and you'll get more used to ghosting and using your shoulder as you progress and warm up. Overall you did a good job!

    Ghosted Planes

Your planes look good, there is still the some of the issues with your from the "ghosted lines" like the arching, but its fine for now.

    Tables of Ellipses

Good job drawing through your ellipses, and keeping them within bounds. Something you do need to work on in this exercise is making the ellipses look more even, which you'll improve on as you get more confident with your ghosting.

    Ellipses in Planes

Some of the ellipses in this exercise still has the same problems from the "Tables of Ellipses" exercise with it not being even, but you did do well on trying to make the ellipses touch the 4 edges.

    Funnels

The Funnels look good! your ellipses are touching the sides of the funnel, and you did good on aligning the ellipses to the central minor axis line.

    Plotted Perspective

This exercise was executed perfectly, you used a ruler, kept the vertical lines perpendicular to the horizon line, and correctly plotted your horizontal edges to the horizon line.

    Rough Perspective

While the lines are somewhat "wobbly", you did a good job trying to keep front and back rectangular, referencing the vanishing point while drawing your lines, and also using the correct "line correction method".

    Rotated Boxes

Your Rotated Boxes exercise looks good, other than the box on the far right, every other box seems consistent, and they're also all rotating.

    Organic Perspective

All your boxes are rotating to a certain extent, and a lot them have a good amount of convergence.

Overall you did amazing job with Lesson 1 and I wish you good luck with the 250 Box Challenge!

Oh, my bad. Kind of critiqued this late at night, so I didn't really go back to check much on the lesson notes. Sorry if I made them do extra work

    Thanks for the revisions!

"Ellipses in planes" look a lot smoother

The "Rough perspective" looks better, and also smoother

In the "Organic perspective" the boxes are rotating more, and they're also seem to be more confident

Also I think repeating lines is fine if you're trying to add line weight, BUT it's not required for Lesson 1.

Congrats on completing Lesson 1, and Good Luck with the rest of Drawabox!!

I'll mark the lesson as complete

Hi! I'll be critiquing you're lesson 1 today

    Lines

    Superimposed lines

Great job with this exercise! There's not that much fraying on the lines, except for the longer lines. You need to work more on the longer lines, there's a lot more fraying compared to the shorter lines, but that's about it for this exercise. Remember to ghost the lines before placing them!

    Ghosted Lines

I do see a bit of wobbling and arching, but that's fine. With practice, your lines should get more smooth and confident.

    Ghosted Planes

There is a slight wobble to some of the planes but overall it looks fine

    Ellipses

    Tables of Ellipses

Some of the Ellipses are kind of going into each other, and e are a few that are going out of the boundary/rectangle,and there are spots where you could put extra Ellipses too. I feel like the Ellipses could be a bit smoother with a little bit more ghosting. Other than that nice job

    Ellipses in Planes

Nice job with this one, a majority of the ellipses are touching all the sides of the planes, but the Ellipses could be more smoother.

    Funnels

For the Funnels, Good job with that one. A majority of them seem aligned, and again the Ellipses should be a bit more smooth with a bit more ghosting.

    Boxes

    Plotted Perspective

    Plotted Perspective looks fine

    Rough Perspective

When doing this exercise the back shape of the box should be around the same as the front like this https://imgur.com/a/U6KBuu3, while still going towards the Vanishing Point, and remember "width lines should be parallel to horizon and height lines perpendicular to horizon", which you did pretty well on,but some of the lines have a little wobble.

    Rotated Boxes

The outside boxes for the Horizontal and Vertical rotations are really off. It shouldn't be extending out that much. Think of it as the center box rotating up/down, instead of thinking of it as an entirely new box. something like this https://imgur.com/a/XP8WIb3.

    Organic Perspective

Nice job with this one. The boxes are rotating enough.

Great job with Lesson 1. The random doodles and font were pretty cool love the creativity. Other than that I'll have you revise a few of the exercises and after that you should be able to move onto the 250 box challenge

    Next Steps:

    • Half a page of "Rough Perspective"

    • Full page of "Rotated boxes"

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hey, I'll be trying to critique your lesson 1 exercises!

    Lines

For the "Superimposed Lines" I see a little bit of fraying at the beginning on some of the lines, but overall you did an amazing job keeping the fraying to a minimum. With more practice you'll get better with more confident lines, and less fraying, since you'll get used to drawing with your shoulder.

For the "Ghosted Lines" and "Ghosted Planes" There is a bit of wobble and arching. I suggest ghosting the lines a few more times. Other than that it looks great, and like I said with the "Superimposed Lines", with more practice your lines overtime will be more confident and accurate.

    Ellipses

In the "Tables of Ellipses" Exercise, I see some Ellipses going out of the Rectangle, but not by much, and there are some spaces where you could fill in some more Ellipses. I also see in 1 or 2 Rectangles where you left a little gap between the Ellipses. Nice job with this exercise, you did great with trying to keep the Ellipses in the square, and they also seem confident.

For the "Ellipses in Planes", Some of the Ellipses are going out of the plane, and I also see a few that aren't touching some of the sides of the Plane, but There are also some that look great. I would suggest ghosting the Ellipses until you are confident enough to draw the Ellipse. It's fine if some of the Ellipse goes outside or inside of the plane a little bit. All that should matter is the Ellipse should look confident, smooth, and a majority of the Ellipse touches the sides of the plane like this https://imgur.com/a/z7dnKB3

For "Funnels", The middle Funnels looks great. With the Funnels on top, some of the Ellipses seem to be going through each other, like the top right Funnel, and for the bottom right Funnel there's a gap between the Ellipses. When doing this exercise in the Future try keeping the funnels together like in the middle right funnel, and also the Ellipses could be a bit more smoother.

    Boxes

    "Plotted Perspective" looks fine

In the "Rough Perspective" I see a lot of repeating lines. Remember "No matter how off a line is, a student should never repeat it, they should kept the line as it if were correct and move on.". You did a good job at keeping the lines parallel to the horizon line and horizontal. Overall you should work on not repeating the lines, which I see you do on the other box exercises too, and is pretty common for a lot of students to do (Including myself currently), and making the box go towards the vanishing point.

the "Rotated Boxes" look fine, but I do see some repeating lines (as stated in the "Rough Perspective" critique).

For the "Organic Perspective" Exercise I still see a lot of repeating lines, and some of the boxes aren't rotating as much as they should be, or they're repeating the same box but smaller/larger like this https://imgur.com/a/eVKfckt. Try placing the Beginning dot at different locations so you don't have the same box every time like this https://imgur.com/a/5NvyC1p , and try changing up the "Y" shape ( For example making a part of the "Y" longer or shorter" forming a "Pizza box" shape or a long box like this https://imgur.com/a/IC3SOiw), which I saw you do a little bit with some of the boxes.

    Next Steps:

    • Half a page of "Ellipses in planes".

    • Half a page of "Organic perspective" and half a page of "Rough perspective". Try to not repeat any of the lines.

    Good luck!

Thank you for critiquing my homework. I tried following your advice on ghosting the eclipses, but I'm not sure if I did any better, since when I'm done ghosting the eclipse, and try to draw it, my hands start to shake a little bit. For the rough perspective, I still think I need a lot more practice . Here are the revised pages that you asked for!

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
