Hello Connor! i´m so glad to hear from you again. And regarding your curves, Uncomfy in lesson 1 recommends curving the line the other way around, says it helps you fixing the curve. But i think it´s more a of a matter of practice, just don´t worry too much and don´t hesitate.

Hi! Thanks for taking your time analysing my work. But the method of "Y" is being utilized!, if you check, i have completed all lesson 1 and the organic perspective is included. Shall i make it again o the challenge in itself?

Congratulations in completing this challenge, it was hard and time demanding, but you nailed it! Well done!

You don´t seem to have too many mistakes, rather than having dramatic foreshortening (check out 71, 103, ,196, 202, 227) and just a few few lines marked towards the viewer.

    Conceptual mistakes

    • There are a few pages that you made more than 5-6 boxes, this made you draw smaller boxes, it´s preferable that you draw bigger.

    Next Steps:

Now, the fun part of this course, click on lesson 2 and start developing that texture. Make sure you keep drawing a few boxes as warmup before every session.

Nicc, nice to see you are making proper use of this course and that it helped you in your art journey. Keep that attitude in mind.

    Now, with the analysis:

Your superimposed lines has some curved lines. When making confident strokes, if you begin to see that you are curving them, try curving to the other side, this tends to fix the line. Also, there is a visible wobbliness in the larger lines, this may be because it was harder for you to ghost the lines that much and you lost confidence. This is completely normal, i personally struggled with this too, remember to ghost AS MUCH AS YOU NEED and take your time to attempt the stroke, smooth, confident and in one shot. Another thing i´ll point here is your tendency to follow the previous line, repeating that mistake. This is something unconscious and normal. Get those other lines out of your brain and focus in making another stroke form zero.

Generally speaking, some constructions present some correction lines, Avoid this at all costs, it´s better that you accept the mistake and keep constructing through it.

About the experimentation... YES, WE MIND. There is a specific reason why these lessons has strict instructions, anything you try to do on your own will only set you apart from the main road and you will not learn anything from it. Stick to the instructions written and in video.

Aside of that i don´t see major mistakes here, just minding the distance between each ellipse, wich shouldn´t be below one another, but it´s not too visible.

It´s a shame that the least quality pictures comes with the rough perspective, because these are the best constructions in your submission, although a quite large margin of error, you managed to get them freehanded correctly. Nicely done!

Rotated boxes is generally good except for the ones in the corners and their neighboring ones, make them slide their vp´s across the axis and make their lines converge towards the guiding boxes. Take note how the boxes in the right and left of the origin box becomes rectangular, this is because you made their edges straight, when they should be more diagonal and converging. Also make sure to use and abuse of the neighboring edges.

Organic perspective gets together your major mistakes, the correction lines are distracting and some boxes present incomplete strokes. Luckily 250 challenge will encourage you to overcome this difficulty

    Conceptual mistakes

-Some pictures are out of focus. Try to take better quality pictures next time.

-Rotated boxes has some missing lines. Make sure you draw every form and every line.

-Not using fineliner. Funnells and ellipses in ghosted planes has circles drawn in some other pen, the instructions specify the use of ONLY fineliner black ink.

    Next Steps:

Grab some snack, get some music, relax, and strive that 250 box challenge with confidence and patience. Make sure you don´t throw additional correction lines.

Congratulations with the 250 boxes challenge, we know it wasn´t easy and you putted the best effort in completing it.

    Now, with the analysis:

First of all, i remark that a lot of boxes has a quantity of dots around. This means that you took your time to properly set the lines. You did well on that.

Although there is generally well constructed boxes, there are some few Curved lines that tend to destabilize them, work on your confident strokes as you move forward.

Watch for dramatic foreshortening, this is important to strive correctly lesson 2.

    Conceptual mistakes

    • The extended lines are usually marked with a black pencil, this makes it difficult for us to see your work and for you to help you see your own mistakes. You should draw them with a different colour.

    Next Steps:

Well done! I would say that you complete lesson 2 but you already did.

First, i will answer your concerns:

The line you draw in the organic perspective is to introduce you to the idea of depth in a three-dimensional space. This line guides you to draw boxes smaller or bigger to give the impression that you draw them further away or closer to the viewer. You will use again this concept in lesson 2. This line also helps you drawing them in series and in relatively size from one another.

Another question you made in the lesson is about the guide squares in the rotated boxes. They act as a guide to rotate the box completely to the other face of the box, keep in mind that you start with the one on the middle looking entirely form the front face of the construction, so the guides you draw after acts as reference points to tell you were it should end.

    Now, with the analysis:

When looking at your superimposed/ghosted lines, the main thing that jumps the the eye is that the line fails to fit in both dots, this happens when you don´t take your time to position correctly the pen before making the stroke. Be sure to take your time to properly land your pen on the starting point before making the stroke. This applies to every straight line you make in the future. Although your lines prove themselves confident, you tend to curve them a little bit. It´s alright, just a matter of practice, but it reflects in later exercises. I advice you to curve them to the other side, it tends to correct a little bit.

Ghosted planes presents these curved lines again(just a matter of confidence and practice), and usually don´t make it to the other dot, is preferable that it extends from it, don´t be afraid of that.

Good job with the ellipses, but sometimes they overlap a bit, when practicing them, try to take additional time to ghost your strokes and try to not breaking the distance between each other.

I will remark above everything how well you managed to get the boxes exercises, i´d say you are a bit experienced with VP´s and it works in your favor. Well Done!

    Conceptual mistakes

    • Not taking your time to put your pen on the starting dot.

    • The boxes in Organic perspective doesn´t overlap. You should draw the box under the other above.

    Next Steps:

Arm yourself with patience, some music, a good snack and strive the challenge with confidence, be cautious with your strokes and focus on getting those lines smooth and confident. You got this!

Congratulations on completing the challenge! We know it was time demanding and difficult, but you managed to do it, well done!

    Now, the analysis

The boxes are well structured, i remark essentially the quantity of dots you drew to try to find the best angle possible. It reflects in your work because you make good approaches towards the vanishing points.

However, some lines are too thick and you tend to make a lot of dramatic foreshortening. Keep them shallow.

    Conceptual mistakes

-Try to take better pictures. Frame the pages so we can only see the exercise, it will be easier and more pleasant for us to critique your work.

-Avoid using the other face of the paper to make the next exercise. The ink can be seen form the other side of the paper and distracts you and the people critiquing your work.

-The last picture doesn´t show anything. Before submitting check that every picture is correct.

    Next Steps:

Excellent work! Now move forward the funny part of the course, lesson 2. I suggest that you draw a few boxes as a warmup exercise before completing the next exercises.

    Hello Xulu!

I considered the surface problem when analysing your submission. Remarkable that you were able to achieve this despite of that. Although for the next part of the course try to find the most suitable place possible to be able to draw comfortable, otherwise it will slow your learning process down.

    Now, with the analysis

At first, watching the superimposed lines i got the feeling that you tend to curve the strokes. I recommend curving the line the other way, it tends to fix the tendency to curve the lines. When you practice your confidence strive to make you lines straight, as they are already confident and precise. ghosted lines also presents a couple of curved and woobly lines, did you ghost correctly the lines?

I´m not to worried about this because, fortunately, as you move forward in the lesson it gets a lot better. Good job!

Ellipses are generally great, they have good confident strokes. In Funnels, though, they got a little woobly, but is generally well executed.

Something i noticed in Boxes, is that, you made some correction strokes on the lines you believe that you made a mistake. Avoid doing this, it is better that you accept the mistake and move on, or compensate the box at some point. Don´t overmark the lines. However, remarkable margin of error, you were pretty close to the VP.

The best section is definitely rotated boxes, a really good thing being the hardest to achieve in the lesson 1. Congrats on that.

Organic perspective presents well structured boxes, and vary a lot in depth and size. Although i´m gonna remind you to loose the fear to overlap your boxes, and stop overmarking the lines, try to take additional time to plan each stroke instead of making them so thick, it´s harder for us to revision your work and for you to improve.

    Concept mistakes

-Watch out, rotated boxes has 2 missing boxes on the corners.

    Next Steps:

Ok, you´re good to go with 250 boxes challenge. Remember to find the perfect smooth surface for you, grab a snack, listen some music, and making those boxes calmly and with patience. Don´t forget to pay attention to your line confidence and ghosting a lot.

Build your confidence. Your lines make it perfectly to the other point with correction bumps. That means you are not attempting to perform confident strokes using the ghosting method from the shoulder. Be sure to apply it with the boxes challenge.

On the other hand, your free handed VP´s exercises are done really good, with a small margin of error. Use that strong point in your favor.

P.s: Rotated boxes has a couple of boxes missing. You should have a total of 25 boxes, 5 per column. Be sure to follow the instructions and watching the videos.

    Next Steps:

Now, strike that 250 boxes challenge with patience, calm, and confidence. You have a good fundamental in boxes construction, just be sure to work those confident strokes.

The challenge completed it´s purpose on you, by the final stages of the exercise i couldn´t point any imperfections in your boxes, which begun less accurate to become really well formed boxes, well done!

There are some pages that contain more than 5-6 boxes, this makes seeing your markings and mistakes harder, try to stick to the instructions. This forced you to draw smaller boxes and i can tell it made it more difficult for you.

I highly recommend pulling the paper from the sketchbook before making any exercise to be able to draw more comfortable.

    Next Steps:

Let´s begin lesson 2, where in my opinion begins the fun part of this course. Any knowledge you have about textures and perspective will be useful for this part. Keep drawing boxes as warmups.

Drawabox-Tested Fineliners (Pack of 10, $17.50 USD)

Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.

Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.

These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.

We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.

Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
