Your insights are always very helpful, thank you so much for taking the time to rate my work :). I must say this lesson was really difficult and i decided to lay off texturing this time because i wouldn't want to hinder my progress on something as important as construction just for a pretty effect. I wish you the best and thanks again for everything ;)

Hello there, congratulations for completing this lesson :). I am Paradosso and will critique your work today:

    • SUPERIMPOSED LINES: i can see a bit of fraying on both sides, when tackling this exercise as a warmup make sure to take your time when positioning your pen back to the starting point, your curved lines tend to be wobbly, this can be caused by using your wrist pivot, warm ups should take care of that.

    • GHOSTED LINES/PLANES: extremely well made, there's a bit of overshooting but with practice that will get fixed. Some lines tend to slightly arch, this can be caused by not engaging your whole arm when drawing the line or because your brain thinks arched is straight. If this is the case you should arch a bit on the opposite direction so that your brain can rewire itself. (Although you have drawn very few planes, when doing them as a warmup, take advantage of the whole page and try to put in as many planes as you can).

    • TABLE OF ELLIPSES: you have made an effort to make every ellipse snuggle together so that's good, the overshooting is not a problem since warm ups can take care of that. Your first page tends to have very wobbly ellipses, remember that our main priority is flow and confidence, it's better to have an overshooting confident ellipse rather than a wobbly ellipse that touches all 4 sides, that being said i do see a leap in line quality when looking at the second page so amazing job :).

    • ELLIPSES IN PLANES: like i said previously, you have prioritized accuracy over confidence, when tackling this exercise as a warmup make sure to take your time and focus on flow, if it overshoots or undershoots but ends up smooth and confident then you are on the right track, accuracy comes from practice so give it time.

    • FUNNELS: a very huge leap in line quality when compared to the previous exercise, nothing to report.

    • PLOTTED PERSPECTIVE: take your time when doing the hatching lines, they are very arched, make sure to apply the ghosting method. Other than that nothing to report.

    • ROUGH PERSPECTIVE: overall the exercise is well executed. The only thing to point out is the ghosting, given the gargantuan amount of tasks you are requested to complete this exercise it's normal to feel overwhelmed and not take your time to ghost. When practicing this exercise, take breaks and take it easy.

    • ROTATED BOXES: an overall good attempt, one thing to point out is that some boxes converge to the same vp rather than rotating (ex: look at the ground squares of the 2 upper middle boxes on the vertical line).

    • ORGANIC PERSPECTIVE: the ghosting is pretty good. When doing it as a warmup keep these things in mind

    1) experiment with dramatic size differences (giant boxes when very close and mini boxes when very far)

    2) add hatching lines to one of the faces facing the viewer.

    3) draw the back corner for some extra challenge.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Go ahead to the 250 box challenge, do lots of warmups to knock that rust off. Have a great day :).

    Next Steps:

250 box challenge and lots of warmups.

Hello there, congrats on finishing this lesson :), i am Paradosso and i will be critiquing your work. Overall you have done an outstanding job with all of your exercises, i'll be listing some things that have caught my attention:

    • GHOSTED PLANES: Some ellipses follow the X lines rather than the + lines. Make sure to focus on the + ones since they represent the axis of the ellipse :).

    • PLOTTED PERSPECTIVE: missing hatching lines so it gets kinda hard to see all the boxes but they are executed correctly.

    • ROUGH PERSPECTIVE: The lines are a bit wobblier than the previous exercises, it may be because given the extra amount of work for this exercise, it is easy to lose focus and go on burnout, when tackling this exercise as a warmup make sure to take breaks.

    • ROTATED BOXES: you are missing the farthest boxes on all 4 edges, also the boxes are converging to the same vp instead of rotating (ex: look at the squares on the ground of the horizontal + line, they do not rotate like the upper faces)

    • ORGANIC PERSPECTIVE: this is not a critique but a reminder. The exercise is executed very well, remember to add hatching lines on a face of the box facing the viewer and to draw the back corner when doing it as a warmup.

Conclusion: move on to the 250 box challenge and practice these exercises as warmups to knock some more rust off (ex: more confident strokes and ellipses snuggling more together). You killed it :).

    Next Steps:

    250 box challenge

Good morning friend, congratulations on finishing lesson 1 :)! I am Paradosso and i will be critiquing your work today:

    • SUPERIMPOSED LINES: i can see fraying on both sides, this may be caused by not taking enough time when positioning the oen back to the beginning point, also the lines tend to be arched and a bit wobbly (especially on the curved and long ones) this can be caused by not using your shoulder pivot, make sure to tackle this exercise in your warmups.

    • GHOSTED LINES/PLANES/ELLIPSES IN PLANES: the ghosted lines are extremely confident and a huge improvement from the previous exercise, you hit level 3 consistently but they are a bit arched, this is either caused by you not using your shoulder or because your brain thinks curved is straight (if this is the case you should arch on the opposite direction, doing so continuously will rewire your brain), same thing applies for the planes. As for the ellipses they are amazing, you prioritized flow over accuracy and have been drawn confidently 2/3 times, don't worry about the overshooting, practice will take care of that.

    • TABLE OF ELLIPSES/FUNNELS: fitting snuggly, confident and the funnels exercise has them aligned to the minor axis, nothing to report.

    • PLOTTED PERSPECTIVE: all in order.

    • ROUGH PERSPECTIVE: while some of the back faces are not 100% parallel and perpendicular to the axis i don't see any guesswork being made so that's ok. The main problem is the ghosting, compared to previous exercises the lines are wobblier which is understandable considering how stressful this exercise is, when tackling this as a warmup make sure to take breaks when needed :).

    • ROTATED BOXES: a few things to note here:

    1) the lines are a bit wobbly

    2) the boxes do not gradually converge but instead follow the same vp (example look at the boxes on the horizontal line of the +, you can see that the horizontal sides of the 2 boxes are going to the same direction).

    • ORGANIC PERSPECTIVE: overall a good page, some lines tend to diverge but that problem will get fixed with the 250 box challenge. Make sure to take your time when doing hatching lines (these ones are a bit wobbly). Whwn tackling this lesson as a warmup make sure to draw the back corner as well and don't be afraid to use more dramatic size differences (very small and very big boxes depending on how close they are to the viewer).

Conclusion: 250 box challenge and lots of warmups, have an amazing day :).

    Next Steps:

    250 box challenge and warmups

Hey there, congrats on finishing lesson 1! I am Paradosso and i will be critiquing your work today:

    • SUPERIMPOSED LINES: overall pretty good. The straight lines are ok and have fraying only on one side, i'd practice the curved ones a bit more though since they have fraying on both sides, make sure to watch out for that in your warmups.

    • GHOSTED LINES: overall ok as well. You hit level 2 consistently. I notice that your lines tend to arch a bit, this can be caused by either 2 things:

    1) not using your shoulder pivot, if that's the case make sure to use your whole arm while doing long strokes, we are prioritizing flow over accuracy so don't worry if you overshoot or undershoot

    2) your brain thinks that curved=straight, if this is the case then i suggest consciously trying and arch a bit in the opposite direction when ghosting, that way your brain will slowly rewire and understand that curved is not straight.

    • GHOSTED PLANES/ELLIPSES IN PLANES: you can refer to what i sajd for the ghosted lines paragraph but i can already see a major improvement in your line quality. As for the ellipses they are very well executed with only a few being uneven, you've put confidence as your main concern and that's good. The accuracy part... warmups will take care of that.

    • TABLE OF ELLIPSES: overall a solid page, you have made an effort to make them snuggle all together and a gold chunk are done confidently. Some are really wobbly though so watch out for that in your warmups session.

    • FUNNELS: pretty confident, snuggle together pretty well and you have tried hard to align all of them to the minor axis, nothing to comment on.

    • PLOTTED PERSPECTIVE: nothing to report although some hatching would have helped since it gets pretty chaotic.

    • ROUGH PERSPECTIVE: the line extension is done well and all the lines are perpendicular-ish to the horizon so there's also no guesswork done. The main problem ks the execution of the ghosting method. This exercise is pretty frustrating so it's common to be overwhelmed a bit. When doing it as a warmup make sure to take your time when ghosting and if you get tired take breaks :)

    • ROTATED BOXES: the linework is really well made, this exercise is by far the hardest of lesson 1 so it's completely normal to feel extremely stressed when tackling it, a few things to note

    1) the faces on the ground do not rotate and converge to the same vp (for example, look at the ones on the horizontal and vertical line)

    2) some boxes rotate weirdly (for example look at the box in the upper middle column on the right)

    • ORGANIC PERSPECTIVE: aside from the already mentioned ghosting the only thing i want to point out is the size of the boxes, when tackling is as a warmup make sure to do different box sizes (smaller when farther away and bigger when closer), draw the back corner as an extra challenge and add hatching lines to one of the faces.

CONCLUSION: you can go to the 250 box challenge, make sure to do these exercises as warmups, have a good day :).

Good evening there, congratulations for sticking through lesson 1! I am Paradosso and i will be critiquing your work today:

    • SUPERIMPOSED LINES: pretty good page, almost all of them have fraying on only one side and the ones that don't are the longer ones, i'd suggest doing long superimposed lines as warmups.

    • GHOSTED LINES/PLANES: extremely well made, you seem to hit level 3 consistently. Some of the ghosted lines are a bit wobbly or arched but you seem to have knocked that rust off in the planes exercise since they are way smoother.

    • TABLE OF ELLIPSES: overall they are pretty good! Although they tend to overshoot you haven't sacrificed the smoothness and confidence of your strokes. Most of them also fit snuggly together. The accuracy will come once you tackle them as warmups so no worries.

    • ELLIPSES IN PLANES: i can already see some improvement in your confidence in curved lines. Only thing i want to point out is you missed an ellipse in one of the planes.

    • FUNNELS: smooth lines, an effort to make them snuggle all together and aligned to the minor axis. Nothing to add.

    • PLOTTED PERSPECTIVE: everything is in order so nothing to add as well. Maybe take a bit more time on the hatching but nothing out of the ordinary

    • ROUGH PERSPECTIVE: the lines are all made consciously with no guessing and the line extensions are done correctly. The only nitpick is the wobbliness of the lines, when you tackle it as a warmup make sure to take your time when ghosting :)

    • ROTATED BOXES: while the lines are confident there are things to watch out for:

    • some boxes converge towards the same vp (for example the 2 farthest boxes in the upper left corner converge towards the same vp and don't rotate)

    • some faces on the ground are flat and don't rotate (look at the first ones on the horizontal and vertical lines, they look flat like the one in the middle)

    • ORGANIC PERSPECTIVE: pretty well constructed! You have also used line weight, hatching and drawn the back corner so very good, that will help you in the 250 box challenge. Only thing to note is maybe try and experiment with different sizes. Most of the boxes look kinda the same in size, you could make the one closer to the viewer very big and the ones further away very small.

CONCLUSION: warmups and move on to the 250 box challenge, happy holidays :)

Good morning, i am Paradosso and i will be critiquing your work today! Congrats for sticking through all lesson 1 :), now onto the homework:

    • SUPERIMPOSED LINES: a solid page. There's fraying on one side so you took your time to position your pen, very good. Some of the longer lines and the curved ones tend to be a bit arched but with warmups you'll build up more confidence and use your shoulder to the best :)

    • GHOSTED LINES/PLANES: i can see you are hitting level 2 consistently. Some of the lines are a bit wobbly so you may be either using your elbow for lines that require the shoulder pivot or prioritizing accuracy over smoothness. That being said looking at your 2nd page of ghosted planes i can see a big jump in confidence and smoothness so you are on the right track.

    • ELLIPSES IN PLANES: smooth lines, draw over 2 times and prioritized confidence over accuracy, a solid page. Don't worry about overshooting/undershooting, that gets ironed out with practice.

    • TABLE OF ELLIPSES/ FUNNELS: both are drawn pretty confidently and i can see you've put lots of effort in making them snuggle together (ellipses on the bottom right of the table of ellipses are the only ones that don't but it's an isolated case so nothing alarming). You have also tried aligning the ellipses to the minor axis of the funnel so you are definitely on the right direction.

    • PLOTTED PERSPECTIVE: nothing to say here, everything seems in order.

    • ROUGH PERSPECTIVE: The lines of your boxes run perpendicular to the horizon line which means you made no random guesses which is very good, you are working on 1 point perspective and your line extensions are correct. Only thing I'd watch out for is your ghosting, the lines are pretty shaky so make sure to do lots of warmups to knock that rust off :).

    • ROTATED BOXES: given the difficulty of this exercise i'd say that you made a solid attempt. A few heads up though

    1) some of the boxes do not rotate (look at the middle bottom row)

    2) some of the faces on the ground are also pretty flat (for example the ones on the vertical line)

P.S.:When you decide to tackle this exercise as a warmup you could add some hatching lines between the boxes.

    • ORGANIC PERSPECTIVE: overall a good page. Your ghosting in this exercise has dramatically improved and i can see you are way more confidet. The boxes are well constructed but the sizes are almost all the same, when you tackle this as warmup don't be afraid to play with sizes, draw smaller boxes the further they go and bigger when they get closer to the viewer. Also as an extra challenge, you can try drawing the back corner and add some hatching lines.

FINAL THOUGHTS: you have done a good job and can now move to the 250 box challenge, happy holidays :)

Hello there! I am Paradosso and i will be critiquing your work today, good job on sticking through all lesson 1 and completing it. Now on to the critique.

    • SUPERIMPOSED LINES: the smoothness of the lines is really good. I'd suggest taking more time when doing this as a warmup though since some lines have fraying on both sides (especially the curved ones).

    • GHOSTED LINES: another solid page, you seem to be hitting between level 2 and 3 consistently. I don't see any arching although some lines are a bit wobbly, but confidence comes when you continue to make them as warmups.

    • GHOSTED PLANES/ELLIPSES IN PLANES: i can already see an improvement in ghosting when compared to the previous exercise. The ellipses are also confident and smooth and the fact that you prioritized it instead of accuracy is a very good sign. Accuracy will come with practice so don't worry :)

    • TABLE OF ELLIPSES/FUNNELS: both are extremely good. Pretty confident lines, i can see the effort you've put into making them snuggly fit together and the ones in the funnels tend to have the minor axis aligned at the center so it's another good thing. You have also drawn through your ellipses confidently which is also good.

    • PLOTTED PERSPECTIVE: nothing to add here everything is ok.

    • ROUGH PERSPECTIVE: a few things to note here. The ghosted lines here seem wobblier than the ones from the ghosted planes, perhaps you could take a bit of extra time when plotting the points (this exercise can get really stressing and time consuming so if you see yourself getting wobblier lines make sure to take a break). The faces in the back tend to be really distorted at time, i would suggrst giving this part a read again https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/roughperspective/guessing

    • ROTATED BOXES: while the lines are really confident and well executed there are things to point out

    • not all the boxes are rotating (look at the ones on the horizontal line, they converge towards the same vp)

    • the farthest boxes of the 4 corners are missing( upper and lower left and upper and lower right)

    • not all the faces on the ground are rotating, some are flat (the ones on the horizontal line)

    • ORGANIC PERSPECTIVE: everything is in order here. Some of the boxes are a bit diverging but the 250 box challenge will knock that rust off. When you do it as a warmup make sure to draw the back corner as an extra challenge.

CONCLUSION: good to go to the 250 box challenge. Make sure to do your warmups and merry christmas :)

Good evening, i am Paradosso and i will be critiquing your work today. First off congratulations completing lesson 1! Now on to the critique:

    • SUPERIMPOSED LINES: overall they are pretty good. Some lines tend to have a bit of fraying on both sides but it's more of a rare occurrence. Make sure to practice the longer superimposed lines though, although you followed the instructions i can see some are a bit wobbly and shaky but nothing that some good ol practice can't fix. Make sure to use your shoulder for these long marks and be confident.

    • GHOSTED LINES: a very good page indeed! You seem to hitting level 2 consistently. The small and medium lines are pretty good. Just like the previous exercise you should practice on longer lines since they came out a bit arched and some a bit wobbly.

    • GHOSTED PLANES: the line quality is on par with the ghosted lines exercise so nothing to add.

    • TABLE OF ELLIPSES: a good page as well! While not all of them always fit snuggly together i can see that you are trying your best to make that happen and that's a step in the right direction. The only one that seem to be rushed are the ones on the bottom left of the 1st page. Overall nothing to add, just be careful to draw 2 full times around them, some of the smaller ellipses are drawn only 1 time (referring to the bottom right column of page 1)

    • GHOSTED PLANES: Make sure to practice this exercise as a warmup. Your ellipses are only drawn once, like i said in the table of ellipse, draw your ellipses 2 full times (3 is also fine). While it's good that you are trying to make the ellipse touch all 4 edges, you are sacrificing smoothness. Make sure to remember that our primary goal is confidence rather than accuracy, so an ellipse that overshoots but is confident is better than a deformed ball that touches all 4 edges.

    • FUNNELS: a solid page. The ellipses fit snuggly, are drawn 2 full times (mostly), and almost all of them are aligned to the axis. The main problem is the one that you have with all the ellipse exercises, confidence. That can be fixed by doing it as a warmup :)

    • PLOTTED PERSPECTIVE: everything is in order here.

-ROUGH PERSPECTIVE: the exercise follows the rules very well. Make sure to pay attention to the lines though, most of them are wobbly but as i said, practice will iron it out.

    • ROTATED BOXES: a few things to note here

    • you have drawn all the boxes so it's good

    • i can see you tried to make all the boxes rotate, that's very good. The upper boxes do not converge and the one on the right actually diverges

    • the box on the lower right is pretty flat.

    • you worked on a very small scale which explains why the boxes are very big on the upper face and very small on the ground, giving it an elongated rectangular form, when you do it as a warmup i'd suggest taking a bit more space

    • not all the small faces on the ground converge.

    • You kept the gaps between boxes pretty tight which is a good thing.

    • ORGANIC PERSPECTIVE: overall a solid page. You got different sizes as they move away which is good. Some boxes have some diverging lines but it's just a small percentage. When you tackle it as a warmup make sure to try and draw the back corner as an extra challenge.

Final thoughts: Overall you have followed the steps, you gave it your best and can proceed to the 250 box challenge. Happy Christmas Eve :)

    • Paradosso

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 box challenge, make sure to do warmups to improve your confidence and smoothness.
