Thanks a lot for the critique! It is exactly what I needed. And don't worry, I have a lot of fun drawing and I think I always will :)

Great! Ellipses are still a bit wobbly but there are drawn the correct amount of times and fit the bounds. Good job!

    Next Steps:

move on to 250 challenge and don't forget to refresh exercises by warming up.

Hello I'm PGcools and I'll review your work :)

    Lines

I see there's is some wobbliness and arching of lines as well. I'd recommend drawing with more confidence, taking a bit more time into ghosting and making sure you are drawing with your shoulder. If the arching persists try to arch the line to the opposite directions while ghosting.

    Ellipses

The biggest deal with your ellipses is that they maybe overlap too much the others. You tend to overshoot when placing your ellipses rather that falling short. Also, in Funnels, the minor axis should cut the ellipses in two symmetrical halfs, and in some cases it doesn't.

    Boxes

Not a lot of mistakes here. In Rough Perspective width lines should be parallel to horizon and height lines perpendicular to horizon, the ones in the front do but those in the back are inclined. I also noticed you repeated some lines, that should never be done, no matter how off a line is, just keep working even thought you know it is going to be a bit off. Apart from that, just perspective issues you will have time to work on in the 250 Boxes Challenge.

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 Boxes Challenge.

Hi, I'm PGcools and I'll review your work.

It's gonna be quick, as there's not much to point out, you made a really good job.

    Lines

Your lines are very good. There are just wobbly in a few intances and sometimes arching, especially in Ghosted Planes. Make sure you are drawing with your shoulder and try to arch the lines to the opposite direction while ghosting to avoid it.

    Ellipses

Again, there are pretty much correct. I notice some wobble here too, but it's not abundant. And you tend to overshoot the ellipses rather than falling short it their placement, so keep that in mind.

    Boxes

Fine too. Just make sure to not repeat the lines even if there are very off. Keep on working with the off line. In Rotated Boxes there are two boxes missing at the bottom, and remember to use the lines of the later boxes to help you draw the boxes ahead. There's not much else to point out, some lines in Organic Perspective are diverging, but you will work on that on the 250 boxes challenge.

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 Boxes Challenge.

Hi! I'm PGcools, I'll review your homework.

Congratulations on getting through the challenge. I'm going to point some mistakes I found in your work so you can keep working on boxes through warm-ups.

Fisrst of all, I think your markmaking needs to be more confident. I found wobbliness and arching in your lines, and you have repeated some several times. These mistakes are found more at the beginning of the challenge, and as you progressed you improved on them, but they are still there. In some cases it seems the lines weren't even plotted with dots. I'd recommend drawing with more focus and confidence, ghost your lines well before making the stroke and take your time. For arching, try to arch the line in the opposite direction while ghosting it. And remember that you should never repeat a line no matter how off it is. Some examples of wrong boxes are 15, 57, 168 or 61.

Now on to perspective, at first your lines where diverging, like in boxes 8 or 20. You progressively improved on this, but then some lines where parallel, like in boxes 177 or 189. To draw better boxes and fix perspective issues such as the inner corner you can try to draw the box in a different order. You can try the way ScyllaStew's uses in the video for the challenge or this way: https://imgur.com/a/DHlA3Jh. Also, the line correction is no well made in all of the boxes, and in other even missing. This step is very important to improve as it shows you the mistakes you've made to avoid the next box. I'd recommend to leave more space between the boxes and extending the lines more, at least doubling the size of the line from the box.

Next, some boxes were cutting because they went out the page, like 51 or 52, this is wrong, you have to draw they completely. Besides, the hatching is not very correct, it feels drawn without confidence as the linesa re wobbly and not parallel to each other. And finally, the line weight you added to the edges of the boxes in not bad, but is is sometimes wobbly too, you need more confidence.

    Next Steps:

Keep on working on lines and boxes through warm-ups and move on to Lesson 2.

Hi, I'm PGcools and I'll check your work.

I found a lot of mistakes I want you to work on on you warm-ups from now. Please don't get discouraged by this, learning to draw is a lengthy process.

    Lines

First of all, your lines doesn't seem to be drawn with much confidence as they present a lot of wobbliness and arching. Also, in Superimposed Lines there's fraying in both ends. You have to place the pen carefully in the beginning dot. To solve try to solve wobbliness remember to prioritize confidence over accuracy and take the time you need to ghost the line before executing it. And arching can be helped by checking if you are drawing with your shoulder and consciously arching the line to the opposite direction. Also, in Ghosted Planed, you must leave a little space between each plane, they must no be touching each other and neither too far away. And you have to fill the entire page.

    Ellipses

As in the Lines, your Ellipses are wobbly. Furthermore, they are sometimes drawn only one time and others way to many, remember you should draw them 2 or 3 times, preferably two. There are really far from the bound they should be touching as well, especially in Tables of Ellipses. Where it seems the time to plan and ghost the lines before executing them has not been taken. Ellipses should be keep within the bound, touching each other and without overlapping. Then, you forgot to complete one of the Ellipses in Planes pages. And again, you should fill up the whole page.

    Boxes

In Plotted Perspective a page had 3 different panels, not two. And you need to use a ruler to execute the lines, which doesn't seem you did. Also, you should try and change the position of the vanishing points and place the boxes in different heights as well, above and below the horizon line. In Rough Perspective width lines should be parallel to horizon and height lines perpendicular to horizon. And you forgot to apply the corrections method.

In Rotated Boxes the lines are wobbly and you didn't keep a close distance between boxes which made it look like dozens of boxes fling around rather than rotating. You should use the lines of the later box to help you draw the next, just changing one of the sides, which rotates bringing the vanishing point closer to the middle of the page. Lastly, in Organic Perspective I'd recommend to try and change the length of boxes, making them longer in some sides and shorter in other, because it seems you replicated the same box over and over. This is just an advice though, and you will keep working on a lot if you continue with this course.

Don't forget to take all this thing I pointed out into account for your warm ups and remember to take breaks if this feels overwhelming at some point. Go step by step and enjoy the process :)

    Next Steps:

Do the Ellipses in Planes page that is missing and apply the line corrections method in Plotted Perspective. Then I'll mark the lesson as complete.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello, I'm PGcools and I'll review your work.

Congratulations on getting throught the challenge. You have worked well, but there are some major issues I'd like to point out:

I find a lot of mistakes in many of your boxes I'm going to point them all out one by one. It may be a bit overwhelming but you have to know them so you can try to avoid them the next time you draw a box. Go step by step and focus on each until you can draw decent boxes.

First of all, the lines are sometimes a bit wobbly, like in box 41 and 42. I feel there's a general lack of confidence because many of them are also repeated several times. Remember that no matter how off a line may be it must no be repeated. Take more time into thinking each line before executing it and don't forget to use the ghosting method.

Your hatching is also very wrong, here nearly all of the lines are wobbly and they should be parallel, which is not the case. Furthermore, in a lot of boxes you have drawn hatching lines in the inside of the boxes, on one of the sides of the back of the box, like in boxes 78 or 88. This completely breaks the illusion and makes the drawing confusing. Even if hatching was optional, if you decided to do it, you should do it as best as you can, taking your time to execute each stroke and remembering that the hatching hould be done in a side that is facing the viewer.

Now, on to perspective. It's normal to have it wrong as it is the first time you try something like this. Some of the mistakes are parallel lines, like boxes 185 or 244; at their extreme lines that directly diverge, as in boxes 215 or 189 and what I find to be the most serious, some of the boxes are not even drawn in 3 point perspective, like 68, 177 or 180. To solve some of these it can help to draw the "Y" shape correctly, with angles higher than 90º, unlike boxes 163 or 240.

Finally, you are extending the correction lines wrongly, for example in boxes 7, 10 or 82. They must no face the viewer. A way to avoid this is to extend them away the initial "Y" shape. And I would also suggest to try to draw boxes with a higher foreshortening, as you should try both low and high foreshortening.

Overall, I think you really need to reread the page for the 250 boxes challenge and watch the video again. If it helps I'd also recommend to read again the contents in Lesson 1 about boxes and make sure you understand everything, if not you can ask question on the discord server or the community forum. And most importantly, don't forget to include boxes in your warm-ups and keep working on them, taking all the thing I pointed into consideration. Again, don't rush and go slowly, step by step. If you feel overwhelmed remember you can always take breaks.

    Next Steps:

Don't lose ambition and move on to Lesson 2.

Hi, I'm PGcools and I'll review your work.

I see you have worked very hard in this lesson, keep up the good work. Let's start.

    Lines

Your line exercises are fine, but you made 2 pages of Ghosted Lines when you should have done 1. The mistakes I see are arching the liens and a lot of wobbliness. I think you should try and draw with more confidence, taking the time to slowly ghost each and every line. To prevent the arching make sure you are drawing from your shoulder and try arching the lines in the opposite direction while ghosting. Also remember that the first line in Superimposed lines must be straight, drawn with a ruler. And in Ghosted Lines I'd recommend to try and draw dots randomly in the page and then connecting them, you seem to draw them in a row following each other.

    Ellipses

Just like with lines ellipses should be drawn with confidence and no hesitation. Many of yours are wobbly. However, you made a goog job fitting them in the tables and the planes and with the minor axis in Funnels.

    Boxes

I see some improvement in your lines here, that's great. But in a few occasions you have repeated a line, which should not be done, no matter how off it is. You seemed to have had a hard time with Rotated Boxes. I think that you should definitely try and dedicate more time before drawing each stroke, making sure you have placed the dots in the right spot and in this case, making sure the lines are straight. Remember you can use the lines of the box of the side to draw the lines of the rotated box.

Lastly, there are perspective problems, but that will be take care of in the 250 boxes challenge.

    Next Steps:

Nice job! Tackle the 250 boxes challenge.

Hello I'm PGcools and I'll review your work.

I can see you have worked very hard and filled every page with abundant samples of the exercises. Now on to the review:

    Lines

I have not much to say here, all your lines are drawn with confidence and placed where it should be. The only mistake I find is arching the lines, make sure you are drawing with your shoulder and not with your wrist or your elbow. If the problem persists, try arching the lines to the opposite direction while ghosting.

    Ellipses

These are very good too, just a few overshoots. Also, I feel some of your ellipses were drawn way to many times, especially in the Ellipses in Planes exercise, remember they should be drawn only 2 or 3 times.

    Boxes

At first your box exercises were fine but for some reason in Rotated Boxes and Organic Perspective you started to make line mistakes you didn't have before. There's a lot of wobbliness, arching and many lines drawn several times when they should be drawn once, in some cases it seems there are not even plotted. I recommend taking a lot more time to think before making each stroke, doing the ghosting method and drawing with as much confidence as you did in the line exercises.

Also, in Rotated Boxes you have rotated the central box 3 times to each side, when in the example there were only two rotations. This add a lot more boxes making it even harder to see the lines and therefore to drawn the boxes correctly. I think you should pay attention to what is asked for concretely in the exercises and that you shouldn't do more nor less.

Lastly, this is not a big deal, but I recommend to use clean paper for the exercises. It doesn't have to be new, you can use recycled paper or the back of a document. I think this makes you focus on the exercise a little. For warm-ups however, you can use whichever piece of paper.

Edit: I'm sorry. In the "Next Steps" field I accidentally put that you should move to lesson 2. Tackle the 250 boxes challenge first, as it is of huge help for that lesson.

    Next Steps:

Don't forget to warm-up with exercises from this lesson and move on to lesson 2.

Drawabox-Tested Fineliners (Pack of 10, $17.50 USD)

Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.

Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.

These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.

We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.

Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
