Hi! i'll critique your lesson 1, congratulations on your first submit!

    lines

You show a little wobbling on the firsts exercise, but you're getting the idea. Remember always plot your lines, ghost them, and then draw from your shoulder.

Good work on not repeating your lines on ghosted planes.

    Ellipses

you got the whole idea of how a ellipse works. Kudos for that. Notice on keep the boundaries in table for ellipses. Remember to keep in mind the minor axis in general (on funnels, some of them are not alligned)

    Boxes

You should to re-read the box section, and as you move on, read the 250 box challenge very carefully. Your boxes are good enough, but you can do better. You have to hatch the nearest face to the viewer of the box on Plotted perspective. In rough perspective, the boxes corners should be perpendicular to the horizon line. (also, you show a lot of wobbling in this exercise, remember to plot, ghost and then confidently draw from your shoulder).

Kudos on completing the rotated boxes, that is one of the toughest ((?)don't know how to spell it) exercises on lesson 1. You did an amazing job there!

On organic perspective, you lines seems to be arching on some boxes, work on that as the instructions says (https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/9/arc) I suggest to redo this exercise, before you move on onto the 250 boxes challenge.

With alll that said, i think you get the whole idea. I'll mark this lesson as complete, but keep in mind this critique to work on that points and improve your drawing.

    Laslas.

    Next Steps:

-Read carefully the notes of the 250 box challenge, then do the challenge, don't be afraid to ask for help or critique in the discord channel (#basic-challenges)

-remember not arcing your lines, plot them, ghost them and the draw with confidence.

-Drink water, sleep well and have fun!

Sure np (english is not my native language, sorry for that).

Plotted persepective, first row, the 4th box from left to right. The closest edge seems a little perpendicular to me, as well the 1st box of the 3rd row. Anyway, you got the idea on rough perspective, so go ahead (but keep that on mind).

Rotated boxes: mostly 2,1 and 4,5. But just a little bit, you really nailed that exercise.

For the lineweight, i think is not mandatory but extremely recommended. Also, is something that you sould do on the 250 box challenge.

    Hi, i'll critique your homework.

Overall, you did a great job (the rotated boxes are very good).

    Lines

Your lines present some wobbles (specially on rough perspective) but it shows that you're in the way to improve (I'm currently in lesson 2 and i still wobble sometimes). The other lines exercise seems nice to me. Also, we're trying to improve smoothness , confidence, no-wobbling lines before accuracy on this lesson, so don't worry about not match the mark right now. In that order, you should mark every line you're drawing (that for the ghosted planes exercise, the inner lines should be plotted).

Don't repeat lines, no matter what, stick to what you've done and keep drawing. (thicking a line is not repeating a line, btw).

    ellipses

I always said this: ellipses are a tough topic, specially if you're new on drawing. Funnels are fine, and table of ellipses too (despite you should draw one ellipse to another, almost tangent, without overlapping. Mind the inner axis too.

    Boxes

On plotted perspective, it seems that the closest edge to the viewer is not perpendicular to the horizon line. Keep that in mind,, also for the rough perspective (you miss a box on the page 2 of that exercise).

On rotated boxes, nice job there, but keep in mind some edge boxes are not actually rotating.

Nice job on organic perspective, your boxes actuallty look that are getting far away. but some boxes are no rotating along the mark. Don't be afraid to lineweight your boxes, you've to do it in the 250 boxes challenge.

So, with all that say, i'll mark this homework as complete. you should start the 250 box challenge, good luck with that!

    Laslas.

    Next Steps:

    REMEMBER:

-Warm up with this exercises (lesson 1 exercises) at least 15 minutes before every session of drawing. (i recommend ghosted planes, ghosted lines and superimposed lines)

-always mark and ghost your lines, don't forget draw from YOUR SHOULDER

-take your time to read the terms of the challenge, until you get the whole idea behind it.

-drink water, eat well and rest when you feel like it.

    -have fun

Hi, nice critique. You should check out this https://pastebin.com/dYnFt9PQ it gives a solid structure to critique lesson 1 :) Also, don't be afraid to give clearly guidelines of the steps that the stundent should follow. (like re-do a page of a specific exercise, or move on to the 250 box challenge.

Hi! nice job on submitting your first homework lessons. First of all, i strongly recommend you for the upcoming homework (that 250 box challenge) to stick your drawings to black ink and for plotting or guidelines with a ruler, use another color (or when it's indicated by the rules of each exercise). With that said, let's get into the core skills of each exercise

    Lines

Your lines are great, a little woobling over here or over there, but essentially you got the whole idea. Keep on plotting your stroke and don't forget to use the ghosting method everytime. I see some arcing lines, but there's just a few, keep that on mind. Congrats also on not repeating your lines and stick to them.

    Ellipses

You did a great job sticking to the "no more than 3" rule. I can see how you struggle a little bit at first, but then you totally get it. Keep in mind the concepts of the minor axis in this exercise (it should split the ellipses in 2 symmetrical halves).

    Boxes

On rough persepective, keep in mind that the boxes lines are perpendicular to the horizon line.

Nice job on rotated boxes, the corners are though, but you get it closely.

Keep in mind the perspective of the boxes (organic perspective) but you will tackle that on lesson 2, so it's fine for now :).

Overall you did an oustanding job, specially with the rotated box. Keep in mind the things that i've told you to improve through the 250 box challenge. I'll mark this homework as complete.

    Laslas.

    Next Steps:

Move on into the 250 box challenge.

-Remember to do a 15 minutes warm up before every session of drawing boxes! (i recommend ghosted planes)

-keep it on, drink a lot of water and sleep well :)

Yeah, is a tough one. I already made one page, but it takes me like 3 sessions of drawing. Thanks for the advice :)

    Hi!

Saw your submission on lesson 2, so i came to see your 250 boxes, and i've nothing about to say: Congrats and very good job. Maybe you're not satisfied, that happens to all of us, but it's a major achivement to tackle this challenge and finish it.

I'm currently working on lesson 2, so i don't feel ready to critiques someone else exercises, so hope someone else critique your other submission.

    Hi to everyone!

He should do the 250 box challenge before getting into the lesson 2. Everything else said seems right to me (also, nice rotated boxes).

Btw, there's a guide to critique the first lesson, you should check it out! it brings a lot of information for making a good and fully critique https://pastebin.com/dYnFt9PQ.

    Greetings :)

Hi! i'll critique your homework. English is not my native language, so sorry for that in advance.

First of all, congratulations on finishing and submitting your first Lesson. Overall you done a preety decent job there, it shows that you read the lessons and follow the rules for every exercise. With that said, let's move on into the details.

    Lines

Keep on ghosting your lines! never forget to do that, even if you' re hesitating for the next stroke. Also, it shows that you're drawing from your shoulder, but keep that in mind, don't forget it. Marking the dots for your strokes also is a good resource, keep it that way.

There's some woobles lines present in whole exercises, but that it's something that you'll improve as moving on.

    ellipses

Ellipses are tough, specially when you've nver draw seriously before (like me a couple of months ago). Don't keep them aside, you're doing a perfect work not drawing through them more than 3 times. They could be pretty, but it shows understating. in them. You should try to think of the space that is using the ellipse and how interacts with the others (i see some blank spaces on funnels, you should draw it next to each other)

    Boxes

Congrats on finishing your rotated boxes! They're no actually rotating ahhaa but it shows that you try. Mind on the deep of the rotation, like if the plane of the paper is represented by the X and Y axis, the Z axis shows the closeness to the viewer of that plane (hope i express that well, if don't, tell me).

The same for the organic perspective: the boxes arent rotating and they're not getting far away or closer to the viewer (well, some of them are, but not everyone).

On rough persepective, the closest edge of the boxes to the viewer must be perpendicular to the horizon line. Keep that on mind, but it shows that you're trying.

Well, like i said before, you did a nice job doing this exercise. Feel free to move on and tackle that 250 boxes. Remember to ghosting your lines and keep this exercises in mind (you SHOULD do at least 15 minutes of warm up before every session of drawing for this lessons. The warm up exercises are ghost plane, funnelss, etc) Hope will see you submitting again :)

    Laslas.

    Next Steps:

Go ahead for the 250 boxes challenge.

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
