I see the improvement on the ellipses.

The rotated boxes are much better, even though you are still missing some lines in the corner boxes. I'm gonna pass you on that one.

You are lucky that I came back to check randomly because I was bored. I thought everybody that didn't reply to the critique gave up and so I'm not checking the profile much lately. Oh well, welcome to boxes purgatory. Expect to pass here at least a couple of months. 250 is a big number. Take your time though. Best advice I can give is to do some every day, even though I fail to do it myself.

I hope you'll be more resolute than me. Good luck

    Next Steps:

Next step is 250 boxes challenge

Remember the warmup described in the faq under this one https://drawabox.com/faq/grinding

Remember to ghost and draw lines from the shoulder

Also the site needs more reviews. If you have the time, please consider joining in the reviewers by following the guide https://pastebin.com/dYnFt9PQ

Lastly when you complete a review, it shows some already done reviews that need agreeing. With 2 agrees, you allow the lesson to be marked as complete. You can also go to the submission page and give some agrees on there

Doing reviews is important because the emptier the queue in general, the faster everyone gets their reviews (yourself included). People in the later lessons don't have to waste time giving lesson1 critiques, so the more advanced lessons get reviewed quicker.

    Thanks if you consider it

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

No problem. Glad I could help

Ok, I see some improvement. Rough perspective is a bit weird. sometimes the horizon is vertical (?) You were supposed to do three panels of that per page but I see you understood how to do the exercise so it's ok. Ellipses are still bumpy but I feel they are acceptable at this point. Well done on rotated boxes. Line quality on there dropped but at least it's a good rotation.

I feel like you can continue

Congrats Woozwooz for completing the assignad exercises for lesson 1. Here's my critique

    LINES

I see fraying on both ends in the superimposed lines ecercise. This means that you didn't take the time to reposition your pen on the starting point. The wobble is minimal, definitely in the expected range for the lesson.

Your ghosted lines are confident, but you forgot the middle lines in a plane. Accurcy will come with time

    ELLIPSES

They are your weak point for sure. It will be tempting to drop them since they are not part of the boxes challenge but you need to pratice them even more than others. The accuracy is a sub-target and you see you focused more on smooth ellipses, but you need to work a bit on superimposition. Try drawing the ellipses at different speeds to find the sweet spot that gives you the best results. "If you draw fast you draw tornadoes, if you draw slow you draw potatoes".

Also some ellipses deform a bit wjile you try to hit the points in the ellipses in planes exercise. Again, smoothness over accuracy. A misplaced good ellipse looks much better than a loose closed path that hits all the points it's got to hit.

    BOXES

You are missing the hatching in some plotted perspective boxes. It was optional so it's ok

You overextended the lines in the rough perspective. They need to arrive to the horizon line, no less, no further. It looks messy otherwise.

We went over the rotated boxes on the discord lesson channel. Basically you did a very nice rotation but the boxes are a bit wonky. The foreshortening on organic perspective is arbitrary, I suggest you to revise the lesson part on the foreshortening to get a better understanding on the concept. In a few words "closer= pointier. Farther= fatter"

Community critiques don't use credits. Did you have two credits and both got used up? This is something that should be discussed with the staff though. I'm just a random internet dude going trough the course that can't afford official critique. I dunno how you can contact them, patreon, report an issue channel on discord. Good luck

indeed. looks like you did do that, so no worries.

Maybe you could ask for this submission to be removed if you don't like having doubles

Are you a patreon? You submitted for community critique, I shall treat it as such. Here's unofficial feedback

    LINES

they arch quite a bit, especially in planes. You need to refine your ghosting technique

    ELLPISES

Poor superimposition on subsequent loops. Either you need to ghost more or draw slower. The ellipse seems confident but that's about it. Funnels really need some work

    BOXES

Poor hatching on plotted perspective. This was optional so I guess it's fine

the lines look messy on rough perspective. When you do a line, stick to it. Line weight wasn't requested in this phase

Rotated boxes are ok but the back lines are very separated

Same thing with organic perspective, don't try to superimpose, or even worse correct, lines

    Next Steps:

your ellipses need some work , so might as well practice more ghosting. I'd like to see the following before I can pass you:

    • 1 page of ellipses in planes

    • 1 page of funnels (do some corner funnel as well)

Pay attention to your ellipses and ghost as much as you need before committing to the line. Draw from the shoulder

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Congrats on completing the exercise. Here's critique

    LINES

Well done on this section. Only thing is the overshhoting the lines and a couple of lines arching a smidge, but overall well done

    ELLIPSES

Ok execution. Try to vary speed of the stroke for better superimposition. The funnels is the weakpoint, add it to your warmups more often than the other exercises

    BOXES

Plotted perspective ok. The hatching was optional, but maybe you could have differentiated the boxes with line weight a little bit more

Well done on rough perspective. Lines start to be less confident. Ghost more

You are missing the boxes in the corner in the rotated boxes exercise

Boxes in the organic perspective are wonky. Pay more attention to foreshortening. You are getting more practice in the boxes challenge, so it's fine.

Alright, I see more understanding of the exercises now. Probably you were just starting out so that's why they were subpar. Looks like you gained quite a bit of practice already,

I'm 70 boxes in and let me tell you, you'll get plenty of ghosting practice, so I feel like you can move on.

They told me a good pace is around 5 boxes per day, but I couldn't keep it. I skip a lot of days in the middle. I hope you can be more constant. Good luck.

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
