    Hello,

Great job on completing the lesson, I'm going to be marking your work and hopefully give you some helpful feedback

For you line exercises, you have done a great job.

For the first two everything seems to be have drawn with great confidence. In your planes exercise most of the lines are fine but some of them are a bit wobbly and faded(not sure if its just your pen) and don't have the same confidence. remember for each line you should be plotting out the start and end points and then apply the ghosting technique.

Your ellipses exercises are also done quite well.

You have drawn through them and done it with confidence. I do see that some of your lines are faded here also again probably to do with your pen. Its probably a good idea to sure your pen is working properly before starting the exercise as I can see it affecting the quality of your marks. One bit of feedback I can give here is that your ellipses don't fit that snugly with each other and sometimes go out of bounds. Although in your funnels exercises you improve quite a bit at getting them to fit snuggly together.

Your ellipses in planes also have the out of bounds issue but are otherwise great. I will just mention though that this is secondary to getting confident ellipses and its just something you can work on as you do these exercises for warm ups.

    And finally your box exercises.

Not much to say about the Plotted Perspective exercise, great job there.

You've also done a great job on the rough perspective exercise, with a few lines here and there which are wobbly.

Your attempt at the rotated boxes exercises is also really good. I think one thing you can do to improve this massively though is when you are draing the hatching lines, you should also apply the ghosting method. this will make your hatching look much cleaner and nicer. currently the marks feels random and all over the place which ruins a lot of the effort you have put into this exercise.

Your organic perspective are great too, most of your lines have confidence with only a few here and there which are wobbly. I wouldnt worry about this too much because you progress through the lessons and do this exercises again as warm ups your lines will get more and more confident.

Overall I think you have shown a good understanding of these lessons and have completed the exercises properly. You can move onto the next exercise which is the 250 box challenge. Good Luck!

    Hello

    Good job completing lesson two

Great job on the arrows, you've drawn them with confidence.

One thing you can do to improve them would be to change their size some more as they go into and out of the page. You have done this a little bit with some of your arrows but it would be a good idea to experiment with some more dramatic changes in depth.

Another thing I would like to mention is make use of all the space on the page, dont be afraid to have your arrows crossing over each other more. this will allow you to be more free with how you draw your arrows instead of constricting them with the space you have remaining.

also remember you can add little lineweight to one of the lines on where the arrow folds of itself to give it a little bit more form.

the final thing I would like to say is to make sure that every line is drawn using the ghosting method including the on the hatching.

For your organic forms, all I can say is great job, theres not much feedback I can give here other than for your organic froms with elipses you are changing the degrees throughout the elipse but I dont think you are doing it as much on organic shapes with contours.

Great job with the textures too, all your marks have purpose. I think when transitioning from light to dark you can probably try make the transition a bit more smooth. at the moment it feels like theres line in the middle where it makes a drastic change.

The textures on your Dissections look great too, they wrap around the forms and break the silihoutte when they need to. there doesnt seem to be random marks either.

Your intersections looks great too, each line drawn with confidence. everything looks like its intersecting with each other properly aswell. one piece of advice I could give here is to add a bit of lineweight to the parts of the shapes where they intersect. You could also add a small elipse to your spheres to give them a bit of form.as shown here

Finally your organic intersections, I think you could make use of the page more. there is a lot of spaces around the edges. on your first page there is also a seperate group of two sausages that seem seperate from the rest and detract from overall composition of the drawing. Your contours also seems to lack alot of confidence here although they do improve on the second page. I think you did a decent job with the shadows.

I think its fine for you to move on to the next lesson, since you shown that you understand the purpose of these lessons, and you will improve with things over time.

    Onto Lesson 3

    Hello,

Sorry for making you go through all the trouble of reuploading everything. Hopefully I can give you some valuable feedback to make up for it.

First off, congrats on completing the 250 box challenge, its definitely not an easy task

In terms of line quality, you have some really good confident lines. they are a bit wobbly sometimes but thats only natural, as you continue they will keep improving over time. However I can see that you have repeated quite a few lines. No matter how incorrect or wobbly a line is you shouldnt repeat them, they make the drawing a lot messier. its better to continue as if the line is correct. this also applies to the lines you have crossed out and scribbled over e.g. boxes 10 and 23

Your line extentions are all done correctly from what I can see. the only thing I will mention here is that sometimes you dont extend them far enough. doesnt matter much if you end up going across another box (especially since you are doing yours digitally and they can be turned off). its more important that you can see whether or not they converge.

All of your boxes have lines that converge to thats great.

Your hatchings are done well too, with confidence.

I think you may have misread the bit about lineweight, you seem to be adding them to the inside of your box when you should be adding them to the outside only. see this section from the exercise page on how you should do that.

You have a good variety of boxes with different forshortening and orientations so thats great.

I think for the most part that your inner corners are done fine, however there are a few times where I can still see you have been struggling with it. some advice I've taken from discord is to change the order you the draw the boxes in this can help by taking advantage of lines that very close.

Overall Great job, you have shown you have a good understanding of the things taught in Lesson 1 and this exercise and I think you should move on.

when doing boxes in the future for warmups, it might a be a good idea to attempt some of the [advanced box exercises too] (https://drawabox.com/lesson/250boxes/2)

    Hello!

Congrats on finishing the first lesson

Hopefully I can give you some helpful feedback

    First up is your lines,

good job on following all the instruction of the exercises.

on the superimposed lines task, your shorter lines are quite good but on the longer lines there is some wobbling. This is probably because you aren't used to drawing from the shoulder, and you will improve at this over time. just remember to keep your lines confident.

I can see this again with your ghosted lines. remember when ghosting you still need to be confident with your lines and draw from your shoulder.

While there are a couple wobbly lines here and there in your planes exercise, I can see some improvement with the confidence in your lines here.

    Next is your ellipses,

again good job on following the steps of exercises properly.

for your tables of ellipses, I think these are quite good actually, they even have more confidence than your lines.

There are a few cases where they go outside of bounds so thats something to keep in mind, but this is secondary to having them be confident.

Your ellipses in planes though are a bit rougher, I can see that you tried to keep them in bounds and this caused them to be a bit oddly shaped. Once you have started drawing the ellipses, if its going to be out of bounds its better to continue then to squish the ellipse. while we do try to be accurate, confidence should always take priority.

Your ellipses in funnels are also pretty good, they are split symmetrically into half and fit into the funnels really well. There are some wobbly ellipses but again I think this is due to you trying to fit them within bounds so refer back to my feedback from before.

    And finally your boxes,

You've followed the steps of these exercises properly too.

Not much to say about plotted perspective, those look great.

on your rough perspective boxes you have follwed the exercise well, the only thing to mention here is some of your lines have wobble to them. again this is something that you will improve with over time, I can even see this with the final two exercises. I'm just mentioning again because of how important it is.

Good attempt on the rotated box exercise, this one is really tough to do. One thing you can improve on is the "rotation" of the boxes. as they rotate the vanishing point also changes. In this exercise I can see that you have repeated over some lines, even when you mess up a line, remember not to repeat it as this will make thing look messier, just continue on as if the line was correct.

Your Organic boxes look good, I can clearly see them going from small to big. When there are some overlaps for boxes in this exercise you should try add a little bit of line weight to those sections to make a bit clearer about which box is infornt. I can see that you have repeated some line in this exercise too, so I will just mention again that lines should not be repeated even if they are incorrect.

Overall I think you have a good understanding of what the purpose of these exercises are, which is the most important thing. everything else will improve over time so I'm going to mark this lesson as complete.

Good luck with 250 box challenge.

    Hello!

Great work on completing the 250 box challenge.

Hopefully I can give you somewhat helpful critique.

I can see that you had a little trouble in your line extentions going the wrong way in your early boxes but by the end you managed to get them all going in the right direction, so good job with that.

you should try adding a some lineweight to the silhouette of your boxes. a single superimposed line is enough, dont worry about it being accurate just keep it confident using the ghosting method

I can see that most of your lines are drawn pretty confidently but I can see some instances where they wobble (boxes 242 and 248 for example). remember to always use the ghosting method and if the line is at an awkward angle you can always rotate the page to make it more comfortable. remember that you should also use the ghosting method for each and every line including the hatching lines too.

Your lines converge really well, and you dont seem to have an issue with the inner corner that is usually common with a lot of people. the only advice I can give is to try out some different orientations and box sizes. a lot of your boxes look very similar so try introduce some variety. for e.g. a lot of them have dramatic foreshortening, try some with with some shallow foreshortening

Overall I think you did a great job and can move on to the next exercise

    Hello!

Good job on completing the 250 box challenge.

I can see that the confidence in your lines has improved over the course of the exercise however I can still see some wobbling especially on the the superimposed lines. remember to use the hosting method on every mark, its fine if its not accurate, confidence is more important. You should also do this for the cross hatching on the boxes too.

In terms of the convergences of your boxes, they are actually done quite well, you also have some good variety of foreshortening on your boxes. although alot of your boxes have the same shape, try experiment with different size combination of all the different sizes.

with your extention lines dont be afraid to go even further with them and cross over into other boxes.

The last thing I would like to mention is the inner corner which alot of people struggle with. this is because its affected by the accumulation of all the mistakes of all your other lines. one way to improve this is to think about the relationship of all the lines together instead of just pairs of lines. One way of doing this is changing the order you draw the lines to draw the inner corner first before the last face. here is a guide that shows the order im talking about. and here is guide explaining how this works.

Keep up the good work and when you get more confortable with your boxes during warmups try some of the advanced exercises

    Next Steps:

    Next up, Lesson 2!

although not required, before starting lesson 2 I think you should do some critiques of some of your fellow student on this site. It really goes a long way in helping you improve your own skills. You can use Elodins guides to help you write them.

Hello! good job on completing the the 250 box challenge

I can see that throughout this exercise your line confidence has improved signigicantly and by the end of it they are really solid.

the only thing I can mention about this is that you should also use the ghosting method when drawing the hatching lines in your boxes so that they also have the same amount of confidence.

also you can try adding a some lineweight to the contour of your boxes. a single superimposed line is enough, dont worry about it being accurate just keep it confident.

one of the main Issues that I can spot with your boxes is that you are doing your line extensions in the wrong direction.

even in some of your later boxes (e.g. 236-247)

you wont be able to measure the convergence of your boxes unless they are going in the right direction.

the way to think about it is that they are extending away from the viewer towards the vanishing point. (so away from the cross hatched face)

if you are still struggling with this, one way to always get the right way they extend is to use your intial Y and extend away from it.

here is a guide that explains this.

Another thing to mention about your line extension is not to be afraid to extend them further and cross into some of the other boxes, you really want to get them as far as possible so you can see if you're boxes are converging properly.

In terms of your actual convergences I think your boxes are done pretty well, you have a varying amount of box sizes and foreshortening, however alot of them are from the same perspective but just rotated on the page. here is a refrence image you can use to give you some more variety.

and the last thing I can mention is a common issue that a lot of people have with drawing boxes and that is the inner corner. this line generally ends up mismatched with the rest of the box because is is the accumulation of all the little mistakes you've maken when drawing the rest of the box. a way to improve this is to be thinking about the relationship of all the lines together when drawing the box and not just pairs of lines. a way to do this is to change the order of drawing the lines and to draw the inner coner before drawing the last face of the box. here is a guide that explains the order. and [this one] explains(https://i.imgur.com/8PqQLE0.png) why this method works.

I think your lines are confident enough for you to move onto the next exericse but keep this in mind and you draw more boxes as part of your warmups.

when you get a bit more confortable with doing with boxes try out some of the more advanced exerices

    Next Steps:

    Onto lesson 2.

although its not required you should try do some critiques of previously completed lessons of some of your fellow student on this site. you can use Elodins guides to help you write them. it will really go a long way in helping you improve.

Hello Congrats on completing the 250 box challenge.

First of all wow, these are some really nice boxes and you have really good confidence in your lines However I do think there are some areas you might be able to improve which hopefully I can give some relevant advice for.

The first thing I can mention is the cross hatching you have done on the faces of your boxes are a bit wobbly and they really take away from the edges you have drawn. try to use the ghosting method for these lines too which will make them more confident lines.

In terms of your boxes converging the lines you have draw seem to be mostly parallel, while this makes for good looking boxes try to experiment with some dramatic foreshortening and some lines which converge quite a bit more. Also all your boxes are looking pretty much the same, here is an image Ive taken from Elodin to give you even more box variations.

another tip I can mention is that you can increase the length of your line extensions a bit more to get a better visual on your convergences, it doesn't matter if they go over the other boxes or cross over some of the other extensions.

the last thing I should mention is that you dont need to cross out the lines like you did on page 223-228 its ok if the box comes out incorrect. doing it like that makes your drawing come out messy. You didnt really do this anywhere else but I thought it was worth bringing up.

I dont think theres really much else to say other than maybe try out some of the advanced box exercises

It seems you already have a good grasp on 3d space which will help you alot in the next lesson. Good Luck!

    Next Steps:

    Onwards to the next lesson.

Although you aren't required too, I think before starting the next lesson you should give some critiques out to some of your fellow users on the site. you can use the guides provided by Elodin on his patebin to help you write them. Doing these really help the lessons sink in.

Hello! Thank you for marking my Lesson 2. I seen that your 250 box challenge hasn't been marked yet so I thought I would mark that first since I have a bit more experience with it. I also seen that you are looking to get official critique but thought whatever I write here might help you somewhat and also let me repay the favour. sorry for not doing it sooner I have been really busy the past few weeks and didnt get a chance to check drawabox once I submitted my lesson 2.

I can see that your lines are quite confident as you've progressed through the exercise however it seems as though when you are trying to add some extra line weight they get a bit wobbly. Rememeber that every mark should be made using the ghosting method even when superimposing over exiting lines. its fine if the line doesnt match the one you are superimposing accurately, as long as the line doesnt have wobble and is confident. This advice also applies to the cross shading you are doing on the faces on the boses, remember to use the ghosting method for these lines too.

Your boxes are all converging pretty well although sometimes you're inner corner is off which is a common problem people have with this exercise. I think that you have less of an issue then I did though. this happens becuase this last corner is affected by the accumulation of all the mistakes made in the previous lines. One way of improving on this though is to change the order you draw the lines in.here is a guide taken from discord (and elodins critique guide) and heres why this method works

I can see that you have a decent amount of variety in your boxes sizes and lengths so thats good however alot of of them seem to be from the same oreintation. Use this reference image. I've taken from the discord (and elodins critique guide) to show you some other orientations you can be doing

Congratulations on completing the 250 box challenge, its no easy task and you have blasted through it. hopefully the advice I've given you is useful and good luck on completing the rest of the lessons and challenges.

If you are ever struggling to get reviews, remember to checkout the discord server, theres a pretty active community on there and you can usually get someone to give you a review if you have done a few yourself.

    Next Steps:

I would say move on to lesson 2 but you already have. Instead I will just recommend you should do some more critiques for Lesson 1 and the 250 box challenge. They really do help improve your own skills

Sakura Pigma Microns

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
