Hey, good job on completing the Lesson. As you already mentioned try to keep doodles and other stuff away from the drawabox exercises.

    Lines:

I like your lines! You clearly take a confident approach and it shows. It looks like you are using your shoulder for every line. Don't have much to critique here, good job.

    Ellipses:

Sollid ellipses. You draw them with confidence and repeat them 1-2 times. A few of them feel like you didn't use your shoulder completely but that is only natural and will get better with time. You kept the ellipses neatly in their bounds.

    Boxes:

Great boxes. It shows that you already have some understanding of 3d space. I also don't have much to critique here.

    Next Steps:

Great job. I see that you already moved on to the 250 box challenge. Good luck on completing that and on your art journey in general :)

    Hey, heres some feedback!

    Lines:

Your superimposed lines have some fraying on both ends of them. Plan every stroke you do beforehand and place the pen down exactly where you want it before committing to the line. Some lines have slight arches and wobbles to them. Don't forget about drawing every line with your shoulder and performing them with a quick and confident motion. Try to lock your wrist and elbow movement before drawing, this helps me a lot.

    Ellipses:

You didn't repeat most of your ellipses in the tables of ellipses exercise. You should draw every ellipse 2-3 times in one confident motion. Prioritise smoothness over accuracy. Try to approach ellipses with more confidence in your stroke. Don't forget about your shoulder!

    Boxes:

Your line extensions/corrections on the rough perspective looks incomplete. It looks like you skipped them for some boxes or didn't extend them far enough. Also don't forget about keeping your width lines parallel to the horizon and the height lines perpendicular to it. Your lines for the plotted perspective look like you did them freehand. This whole exercise should be done with a ruler. Read the lesson instructions more carefully and don't forget to watch the video and read the text.

Your hatching on the boxes look messy. Take your time and really think about every line you do and perform them with confidence.

    Next Steps:

Good job on the lesson. I would like you to do some revisions.

One page of the tables of ellipses exercise. Think about repeating your ellipses this time and concentrate on a smooth and confident approach whilst using your shoulder. Read through the lesson instructions again if you are having problems.

One page of the rough perspective exercise. Keep your width lines parallel and the height lines perpendicular to the horizon. Fully extend the line corrections and do them for every box. Don't forget that you can use a ruler for the line extensions. When doing the hatching don't forget to treat every line as important as any other line. Perform them with confidence and try to make them less messy.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Good job on completing the lesson! Here's some feedback.

    Lines:

Some of your superimposed lines have fraying on both ends. Take your time before every stroke to plan ahead and place the pen down exactly where you want it. You take a confident approach with lines but some of them have a slight arch to them. Don't forget about using your shoulder for every line. Try to lock your wrist and elbow movement before you start drawing, this helps me a lot. I can already see good improvements in your lines, keep it up!

    Ellipses:

Good job on keeping the ellipses in their bounds and repeating them only for 1-2 times but don't forget that confidence is more important than accuracy. This applies for lines and ellipses. A confident line will always look better than an accurate one. Try to draw the ellipses in a quick and confident manner. Feel the circular motion with your shoulder when drawing them.

    Boxes:

I can see that you used the same rotation for most boxes on the organic perspective exercise. Try to experiment a bit and vary the rotation to make the scene feel more "organic". This is not a very serious problem but it helps with making things more interesting. Besides that I like your boxes and I think you are on the right path.

    Next Steps:

You understood the lesson and should continue on with the 250 Box challenge. Good luck with that!

Hey, good job on completing the lesson!

    Lines:

I like your lines! I don't see any fraying on both ends and you think about the stroke before you do it. You perform your lines with a confident approach, which is great. You don't repeat inaccurate lines and move forward to the next. I don't have anything negative to say here except that some lines are a bit wobbly here and there. Try to really concentrate on the movement from the shoulder. Lock your wrist and elbow movement before you do the stroke, that helps me a lot. Keep practicing and perfect those lines!

    Ellipses:

Again, good job! You keep the ellipses down to 1-2 repeats per ellipse and contain them neatly in their bounds. I can see that you also take a confident approach with the ellipses, just like with the lines. Sometimes your ellipses lack a bit of smoothness but that will imrpove with practice. Always think about the shoulder motion!

    Boxes:

In the rough perspective exercise there are some width and height lines that are not parallel or perpendicular to the horizon. Try to plan the box and every stroke beforehand just a bit more. Good job on the rotating boxes. You kept every box close to each other and I can feel their rotation. Your organic perspective has a nice flow to it and I can feel the distance between them.

    Next Steps:

All in all you did a very good job and congrats on completing the lesson. Continue to practice the exercises in your warm ups and revisit the lessons from time to time. I think you should continue with the 250 box challenge. Good luck on your art journey! :)

Hey, good job on completing the lesson!

    Lines:

Try to go for a more confident approach with lines and try to prioritise that over accuracy. I can see some wobbling in your lines. Try to really concentrate on performing every stroke with a clear and quick motion from your shoulder without letting your brain take the upper hand to correct it. Getting the shoulder motion down is really difficult but you will get there! Try to lock your wrist and elbow movement, this works for me a lot of the time.

Some lines you did had fraying on both ends but I can see that you improved on that. Try to really think about every stroke you make beforehand and place the pen down exactly where you want it.

I see that you repeated lines that were not completely accurate when constructing boxes and you tried to redo them. Next time just leave the first line as if it were correct and move on. This is easier said than done and needs practice and self control but try to enforce that mindset.

    Ellipses:

When you draw an ellipse try to draw through it for only 2 or 3 times even if you are not happy with it. You will get better with time. You should also prioritise confidence over accuracy, just as with lines. Try to really feel the circular motion in your shoulder when drawing the ellipse and don't try to forcefully control it. Again, the motion should be quick and clear just like with lines. I think you did a good job on containing the ellipses within their bounds. At the funnels exercise, try to plan the line that cuts the ellipses in half a little bit more. A few of them don't cut the ellipses in half.

    Boxes:

I want to go over the importance of confidence again. A lot of the boxes lack confidence because you tried to go for a more accurate approach. A confident line will always look better than a wobbly but accurate one.

In the rough perspective exercise you did a good job on keeping the the width lines parallel to the horizon and the height lines perpendicular to it. Your plotted perspective looks good. Good job on the rotated boxes and keeping them tightly together.

    Next Steps:

I think that you understood the lessons but just need to work on it more. Try to repeat the exercises as quick warm ups. I think you are ready to move forward and should tackle the 250 box challenge. After that move forward to lesson 2. Hope this was helpful and good luck :)

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I will keep it in mind and do my best at the 250 Box challenge! :)

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
