Hi! I'm Lazy and I'll be your free community feedback provider today!

Great job completing Lesson 1! This one took me a while to get through and on first glance I can say with some level of confidence that you did pretty good

    Superimposed lines:

Good work on keeping the fraying limited to one side of the page! Its clear you took the time to carefully return your pen to the starting position. I do spot a bit of wobbling but not nearly enough to warrant a revision- although the bottom two lines on the second page have something a little strange going on with them lol

    Ghosted lines:

Again, great work here as well. there are a few instances of them arching a bit but those examples are few and far in-between. I can't really spot any signs of wobbling so awesome work!

    Ghosted planes:

The same awesome work as in Ghosted lines. Very confident wobble free lines with very few examples of minimal arching.

    Tables of ellipses:

Great job drawing through your ellipses. Also great work aiming to keep them within their boundaries! I do see a bit more wobbling here and that's probably just due to the shift between drawing straight lines and working on curves like this. I see an amount of improvement on the wobbles over the course of the exercise and that's awesome. Make sure to add this to your warmup pool but awesome work!

    Ellipses in planes:

Unsurprisingly this looks pretty solid as well! There is a clear effort to hit the boundaries on the planes with many making good contact! I did spot a few slightly deformed ellipses but those are exceptions and far from the majority. I'd make sure to keep this one in the warm up pool but I see no need for revision here.

    Funnels:

Great work keeping your ellipses tight, with good spacing as well as aligning them pretty darn well! There is slight evidence of wobbling here but overall this looks great & I suspect will only improve with more practice.

    Plotted Perspective:

Very clean, professional looking boxes with no signs of distortion. Great work here!

    Rough perspective:

Good work avoiding guessing and using the correct type of perspective! These are looking pretty solid, except it looks as if you may have gone over a few of your mistakes here and there and corrected them. A part of the learning experience DaB offers is understanding and embracing your mistakes so you can better understand them going forward, so I would encourage you to be a bit more forgiving of your mistakes for the purpose of learning. I don't think you need a revision as its clear you understand the exercise but I encourage you to resist the temptation to correct your mistakes in the future to help better gage where you are and what needs improvement. Overall awesome work.

    Rotated boxes:

Not too bad on this one! The rotation in the first layer surround the center box could of been more dramatic, but you kept this pretty well together! I would suggest lining up the far side corners of the boxes as well as the close side corners to make this more uniform in the future, but still not bad!

    Organic perspective:

Everything here looks pretty solid! There isn't too much to be expected of us in this assignment so I don't have too much to say except good work! These boxes are the first of many as the 250 box challenge looms in the not too distant future.

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 box challenge! Make sure to add these exercises to a warmup pool and stay on top of them! Awesome work!

Hey, great work getting through lesson 1! From a quick glance it looks like you did a pretty good job at following instructions, but let’s dive a little deeper and see if there is anywhere you need to improve.

LINES: You did a great job on your superimposed lines. There are a few lines with double sided fraying but it’s obvious you spotted those and worked to avoid it which is awesome. There isn’t a whole lot of arching that I can see so good work there. There are a few cases of wobble, mostly visible on your longer lines, but the cases of this are few and far between and will more than likely improve as you keep practicing with the ghosting method into the future. Overall, you did really good with the Superimposed Lines exercise.

Your ghosted lines look really solid as well. You did good remembering to plot each line with a starting and ending point, and its clear you used smooth, confident strokes to draw them. There are a few cases in here where your lines arch a bit so make sure you’re drawing from the shoulder, and if you are still getting arched lines try drawing a slight arch in the opposite direction. Overall awesome ghosted lines.

The ghosted planes are a step up in difficulty, but you did pretty well with them too. Great job making sure to plot each line. Most your lines here are confident as well with a few wobbly exceptions. Make sure to take the time to ghost each and every line and try not to put a priority on accuracy over a straight line. A straight confident line is always better than a wobbly accurate one, but I honestly feel a bit nitpicky when I say this as they look pretty good and would only improve with more practice!

ELLIPSES: Great job on working to keep your ellipses in bounds! I can see you made a few markings on the tables where you overlapped here and there which shows you’re focusing on the right things there! With a few exceptions you did well making sure to draw through them at least twice. It can be difficult to make sure you’re still drawing confident, smooth strokes when you’re also trying to keep within bounds and that shows a bit with some noticeable wobble &or deformation. Make sure you keep priority on smooth ellipses over accurate ones just like with lines. Your plane ellipses look really smooth and you did a good job keeping them within the bounds. It looks like you had a bit of trouble with keeping some of your funnel ellipses smooth so when you practice this in the future make sure to prioritize that. A lot of your ellipses on the ends of your funnels start to struggle to stay centered as well. You might want to put more focus on having the minor axis cut your ellipses into symmetrical halves, especially towards the far ends. Overall good work on these! Make sure to practice these as warm ups in the future with a focus on smooth, confident lines!

BOXES: Great job making sure to draw through your boxes on these! (With exception to Organic perspective, but that’s optional) On your Rough Perspective there are some places you struggled to keep the lines on your boxes parallel and perpendicular to the horizon, but I see some improvement on this over the course of the exercise which is good! Overall, really good work over the course of the assignments and once again I suspect you’d only get better with more practice. On your Rotated Boxes, good work making sure to keep the corners close! You did a good job making sure the boxes were actually rotating as well. Make sure you continue to ghost all your lines in your boxes to keep them as straight and confident as possible. You did pretty good in Organic perspective as well. There are a few instances of repeated lines. As tempting as it is to go back over a line, its best to leave an inaccurate line and move on as if it was correct. Other than that, you did fairly well and I believe the 250 Box Challenge will help you with loads with learning perspective.

SUMMERY: I think you did a pretty solid job here! You clearly paid attention to the lesson material and did good following instructions. Make sure you keep ghosting your lines and put a major focus on smooth & confident over accurate. Other than that, I think you’re ready to tackle the 250 Box Challenge!

    Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 Box Challenge

Hey, I'll take a quick look at your work!

LINES: Your lines look great! There is some slight arcing in the longer ones but it looks like you noticed and took steps to correct them throughout your superimposed lines! I don't see fraying on both ends at all & your ghosted lines look great as well! I'm having a hard time many wobbles at all aside from some lines on your ghosted planes. Some of the lines close to the edge of page 5 have some slight wobble but nothing extreme and well within acceptable margins.

ELLIPSES: Really good job making sure to draw through your ellipses at least twice. The vast majority of your ellipses look very confident with very little sign of any wobbling. One thing I've noticed is some of them lean more into an egg shape rather than an ellipse. Make sure you're drawing from your shoulder and try drawing them at a bit of an angle. I can tell you focused on making sure the ellipses had set boundries which is good but try to avoid deforming the ellipse to achieve this in the future. Your funnels look pretty good and would only get better with practice. Good work!

BOXES: Good job keeping your hight and length lines parallel and perpendicular to the horizon! This can be difficult to do and you did a great job. Some of your lines here suffer from a bit of wobble but nothing too bad, just make sure to ghost through your lines! Your Rotated Boxes look pretty good too. Good work making sure to keep the corners close! A few on the lines here show a tiny bit of wobble but nothing severe by any means. You did really well on your organic perspective as well! A little more signs of wobble so be sure to take the time to ghost out all your lines. Overall you did fantastic on them though, they look great!

SUMMERY: Make sure you're drawing from your shoulder and take the time to carefully ghost out all your lines. Overall great work and I think you're very much ready for the 250 box challenge. Good luck!

Move on to the 250 Box Challenge.

Good job completing lesson 1! Often times the first step on a journey is the hardest one. At first glance this all looks really good, but lets take a closer look and see if we can spot any important mistakes.

Lines: Wow! Hardly any wobble at all. Most your lines are Pretty spot on! I don't see any major case of double sided fraying either. Sometimes in the longer lines there is a bit of an arc but that's extremely common. You did really well on your Superimposed Lines! Your ghosted lines are pretty fantastic as well. A few of them have slight wobble but nothing too noticeable at all. Your ghosted planes as well look very well done. There isn't much to point out here, really good work!

Ellipses: Really solid work here as well. Great job making sure you went through them at least twice. most of them look very confident without any noticeable wobble. Good job making sure they're all packed with with clear boundaries. Your funnels as well all look pretty fantastic! These will only get better with time and practice and it looks to me like you're doing everything right!

Boxes: More really good work here on the Rough Perspective. You did a good job keeping your hight and length lines horizontal and perpendicular to the horizon with a few exceptions. Its the best work I've seen so far on these so really solid work there. There are a few lines here that arc but nothing too bad. Good job plotting your lines. Your Rotated Boxes look pretty good as well. Maybe try and keep the far-side corners a little closer but honestly you did pretty great work here. Your Organic Perspective boxes also look pretty fantastic! The perspective is really quite well done and it looks as if you've got a bit of experience with this kind of thing. The 250 Box Challenge will probably be pretty easy for you to tackle!

Summery: Great work! I had a hard time spotting any kind of mistakes. I'd say you followed the lesson material very closely and you're super ready to tackle the 250 Box Challenge.

Good work making it through lesson 1! Many times the hardest step of the journey is the first one. The first time I tried DrawABox I gave up halfway through the Organic Perspective exercises so I understand how difficult these can be. You made it through! Good work!

Lines: On your superimposed lines you did a good job with the fraying! For the most part it looks like its excluded to one side of your lines which is exactly what we're after. There are a few of the curves that see some signs of double sided fraying but nothing too extreme. Its really common to see more double sided fraying on the curves, but they're not really the focus of the exercise. I see some signs of wobbling in these lines but nothing too bad, just remember to draw with long, straight confident strokes, with focus on drawing from the shoulder. It can be tempting to try and correct our lines last second but an inaccurate line in this case is always better than a wobbly one. Overall great Job on the Superimposed Lines!

Your ghosted lines look good as well. This is a simple exercise that I find myself coming back to over and over again. There are a few lines here that have some wobble to them but nothing too bad. Remember that a line that misses it's mark in these exercises is better than a wobbly one.

The same could be said about the lines in your Ghosted Planes. Really quite good for the most part with some signs of slight wobbling. Throughout all these exercises I don't see any sight of you redrawing through your lines though which is something I personally struggled with. Good work! Also it looks like you did a good job plotting your lines, which is awesome!

Ellipses: Ah these evil dudes. You did a great job making sure to draw through them at least twice. You also did a good jog keeping them in bounds! There is a little overlap here or there but that's to be expected and not to big an issue at this stage. You did a great job on the funnels, keeping the minor axis (the line in the middle) centered through your ellipses. I would say your biggest struggle here is the wobbles, particularly in the Tables of Ellipses exercises. Make sure to prioritize drawing from the shoulder and focusing on smooth, confident strokes rather than accurate ones. An inaccurate ellipse is always better than a wobbly one, just like with our lines. Your Ellipses in your Planes are really quite great for the most part. I can see improvement through these exercises for sure. One more thing about the Ellipses, a lot of them seem to be a bit egg shaped. I've heard that drawing them at an angle can help fight off the egg shape.

Boxes: You did good drawing through your boxes! It's not required on Organic Perspective so that's fine too. On Rough Perspective I noticed a few of your width lines aren't parallel to the horizon and some heigh lines aren't perpendicular to the horizon. This is often times difficult to get 100% right all the time but its important to keep in mind for future warm ups. Most of them look really good and there are just a few that really stick out this way. Your rotated boxes look pretty decent! Remember to use the corners on the far side of the boxes to help them line up better. Remember to keep corners close in the future, but overall they look nice!

Summery: I think you have a pretty solid grasp of most of the material in lesson one with one weakness: wobbly lines. Not all of your lines are wobbly though so I think you're doing well in some cases. Remember to ghost your lines and focus on straight, confident strokes over accuracy. The 250 box challenge should help a LOT with accuracy. Don't be afraid to get your lines off a little. A wobbly line is always worse than one that misses its mark but is straight and confident.

Move on to the 250 Box Challenge.

Hi! Good job finishing Lesson 1! The first time I started DrawABox I quit halfway through the Organic Perspectives exercise so I understand how difficult this first stage can be.

Lines: Your superimposed lines look pretty solid. The straight lines don't have any fraying on both sides which is good! Some of the curved lines have a bit of fraying but nothing too bad. There is a big of wobble in some of the lines - especially in the longer ones. There is some wobble in the ghosted planes as well so make sure to prioritize smooth, confident strokes over accuracy. Good job establishing starting and ending points on your lines!

Ellipses: Your Ellipses look pretty good! With very few exceptions its clear you drew through your ellipses a few times. They look confident and its clear you were drawing with a concrete goal. In the ghosted planes exercise i see a few slightly deformed ellipses, but the overwhelming majority of them look good. While there are a few that dont get close enough to all four sides, none of them are floating which is good. I've heard drawing your ellipses at an angle inside your planes can help them hit all four sides while avoiding a deformed egg shape. In the funnels exercise, your ellipses for the most part look pretty good. Some of your ellipses on the ends struggle to stay centered, so keep that in mind when you do this in the future. The spacing looks great!

Boxes: In rough perspective, make sure in to draw all with lines parallel to horizon and all height lines perpendicular to horizon. I'd suggest going back and re-reading a bit of the material on the homework page to get a better grasp of this. I can see four boxes that are missing lines and are not entirely drawn through. On rotated boxes make sure to avoid redrawing your lines. Redrawing our lines in DrawABox should only be done to add weight to a line and not to correct mistakes. Make sure to keep the corners of the boxes close and use neighboring boxes and lines as a guide. Two of the corners have some missing boxes as well. The rotation in the boxes looks good though! Your organic perspective looks good too. Make sure to take your time in these exercises and ghost your lines. There are a few instances of redrawn lines here too. Try to avoid redrawing lines like this in the future. Even if a line is far off, leave it as it is and move on.

Once again good work getting through this all! I hope I helped bring awareness to a few weak points so you can better focus on them. I think if you make sure to avoid repeating lines & take time with ghosting out the motions before drawing, you're ready to move on to the 250 box challenge. Keep coming back to these exercises for warm ups and good luck with the rest of DrawABox!

Move on to the 250 box challenge

Thank you for your time! A part of me was worried nobody would look at it but I'm glad you took the time to post this! I agree with you & I got worried once I looked back and realized I was redrawing all my lines. I'll take this all into consideration and work to avoid these mistakes going forward. Once again, thank you :)

PureRef

This is another one of those things that aren't sold through Amazon, so I don't get a commission on it - but it's just too good to leave out. PureRef is a fantastic piece of software that is both Windows and Mac compatible. It's used for collecting reference and compiling them into a moodboard. You can move them around freely, have them automatically arranged, zoom in/out and even scale/flip/rotate images as you please. If needed, you can also add little text notes.

When starting on a project, I'll often open it up and start dragging reference images off the internet onto the board. When I'm done, I'll save out a '.pur' file, which embeds all the images. They can get pretty big, but are way more convenient than hauling around folders full of separate images.

Did I mention you can get it for free? The developer allows you to pay whatever amount you want for it. They recommend $5, but they'll allow you to take it for nothing. Really though, with software this versatile and polished, you really should throw them a few bucks if you pick it up. It's more than worth it.
