    WooHoo! Thank you.

I do know my eclipse angles need to be worked on. I've been looking for exercises to help me understand them more. All the eclipses on the second page were much the same, though you were focused on the edges, so that's what I focused on.

As for doing them quickly, I'm not working at the moment and I finished this last week. I'm kinda desperate to move on (have another course in waiting but don't want to complicate things just yet). Only so many random drawings you can do before you start wanting something more structured. I didn't want to go over the same lesson again in so short a time. And you said not to start the next lesson until the current one has been marked complete. Sure, I could have but I want to do your lessons the way you've set them out. I'm being good, I haven't even looked.

I have taken in everything you've said, at least to the best of my ability to understand. Off the top of my head...

Branches drawn your way. Eclipse angles (I'm currently drawing the bottom angles at the top, and not enough variety of angle). Centerline for all eclipse-based drawings. Cap off edges. And pots, draw them as what they are, not a paper thin construction. (Ohh and no zig zagging). Slowly, slowly hopefully things will click.

Thank you for answering my questions, and for checking off the lesson. And of course, thank you for your time, I appreciate it.

    Have a great day!

Sorry, I have a tendency to "ramble". I'm trying hard not to, alas 30 odd years of habit is a hard thing to "fix".

More branches, check. Don't over think.

I think you misunderstood my question re width of the eclipses. I mean from each edge, not how they get bigger and smaller as we look at it from a fixed point. I'm not technically minded, and it's been years since I was in school but I'll try to explain. Say I'm doing a trunk/pole/pipe that's a consistent 5cm in width, completely ignoring 3d. We have the center line, so that's 2.5cm from each edge to center line. How do I keep each eclipse 5cm without using a ruler? It's something I think will come with practice.

The other question 2 questions I had.

    1. Small stems. Like strawberry stems, or vines on a passionfruit. Do we do the same branch exercise for them even if only a few mm wide?

    2. Leaves on a plant like the strawberry - do we do them all like the hibiscus, or do we do leaf separately? Some I can see drawing using the hibiscus method, while others would be separate.

    Thank you.

    I think I get it.

Still wonkie, but it finally clicked. I think that overshooting could take years to master, and even then, you'd never get it completely perfect. (Those tails are infuriating to see. It's going to drive me nuts in the future. Something I'll definitely have to practice with.)

I probably went a bit overboard. I just wasn't getting the overshoot. The video said don't overshoot too much, or too little. But what was too much, or too little. After reading what you wrote in my critique for the umpteenth time. Out loud to myself so I wasn't missing anything. I finally saw it. "Overshoot halfway between eclipses". (And I just noticed that in bold in the written material too. I guess no matter how many times you might read something, you'll always miss a vital piece of information when there is so much of it to take in.)

First page was a warm up, second page was going to be my submission, alas I still wasn't getting it right. Re-read, re-watch everything. Then three - eureka! (I don't normally do page after page of the same drawing. At least not unless I don't quite understand, otherwise it's one or two of something as a warm up, or while doodling.)

I'm also having trouble getting all the eclipses the same width. I guess that will come with practice. (And for some reason I thought it was July, that's neither here, or there.)

    Thanks again.

    Have a wonderful day!

While you didn't ask for this, I thought I'd draw it anyway. And it gives me another plant practice. The same strawberry plant a week later, with a photo at a slightly different angle.

The first drawing turned out wrong, so I didn't finish it. It remained a "sketch". It was also an overhead angle, so the foreshortening of the plant I didn't quite grasp.

I wasn't sure about the leaves, I'm still not sure. Do we do these kind of leaves like a complete flower? Or do we do the leaves separately? In some case I can see doing them like we did the hibiscus, while in others they appear to three separate entities. (A humble strawberry plant through me for a loop.)

How does one do these small stems? If it was a drawing/study of one single leaf, I can see using the eclipses however I'm unsure for the whole plant with the stems so small.

    OKies, I'm gone again.

    Hi Uncomfortable,

I was bound to be asked for extra pages eventually. I'm actually glad, as weird as those sounds!

I was having trouble with the branches, or eclipses in general. I've been doodling branches and eclipses ever since I came across them. Just a few each day, so hopefully with the new page there will be some improvement, or at least what I should be doing will finally "click".

I'll go over the branch lesson again and upload a new page. Thank you.

Liberal adding of extra super imposed lines. Yeh, I'm trying hard not to do this. I'm looking at things from a "finished" perspective which I need to stop doing for these lessons.

Leaves, zig zagging - I was so conscious of what you said in the lesson. I didn't think I did, but it looks like I have in a few places. Noted, thank you. I'm keep an eye on that in the future.

Yeh, that strawberry seedling was horrible. I wanted to do it again, but the lesson say to upload your first attempt, so that's exactly what I did. As pretty as strawberry leaves are, maybe it wasn't the best choice. (Ahh not to worry, it's all a learning experience. One wonkie drawing at a time! And I've got more strawberry seedlings than I can poke a stick at if I want to try again.)

Ok, don't be scared of adding as many eclipses as needed. I was wondering if I was doing too many in some cases, but not enough in others.

If something goes off the page, be sure to cap it.

Okies, I'll go over what you've written a few more times, go through the branches again and we'll see how we go.

Thank you for your time. :)

    Have a great day!

    Thank you again, Tofu!

This is one I expected to be asked for a few extra pages, I'm surprised that I passed first attempt. Yay! -does happy dance-

I have been doodling with both the ribbons and sausages since they popped up in the lessons. Have also been playing with the form intersections in an attempt to understand them better. Thankfully, to me, these are fun exercises rather than a chore (like textures).

Textures, yeh, I did them wrong. While there is that texture challenge, I might do a few smaller texture studies just so I can understand it better. Focusing on the shadows rather than the detail. As much as I hate them, I do need to at least understand them. Slowly, slowly.

Okies, I won't natter on any more. Thanks again. :)

    Have a wonderful day! :D

    Hi Tofu,

Thank you for checking my boxes and marking it as complete. WooHoo! Another "lesson" down. I'll do a few more days of "me" drawing before jumping into the next lesson. Need to cross off some more 50% time. (I'll add a few boxes as a warm up in the future so I don't lose sight of what I've just learned. And I'll try to draw them bigger.)

My nattering, yes, I have a bad habit of doing that. My apologies. It's something I'm trying not to do these days but seems harder than I anticipated. ('Tis the writer in me that is chained up in the basement.) If you are all happy with just a basic greeting and/or any questions when submitting lessons, I can live with that. I'll do my best to keep it short.

Okies, I'll be quiet now. I'm gone.

Thank you again, Tofu! Have a wonderful day! :D

It's a great attempt. I can see the perspective you're going for. The cabinets under the tv look good. Jojo looks like Jojo, both his character and framed pic. I love Jojo's expression. I've not watched the Powerpuff Girl's but I can imagine Jojo grumbling that the girls are getting all the attention. -grumble grumble-

Most importantly, I think, is that you finished it even though it was giving you issues! Yay! :D

Very good attempt, especially if you just used your imagination! I'd like to see you come back to a similar pic after a few more lessons. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Adam. I'll not critique myself, I'll be good.

The last time I drew regularly was about 15 years ago. Before that, I drew a lot. Self taught, so lacking lots of foundational skills. I wanted to get into comic art back then, or illustration. Started both a Fine Art and Visual Arts degree but, well, life gets in the way. I'm also in Oz (Australia), there were slim pickings in art at uni if you wanted to focus on comic art or game design back then. America was the place to be, or Japan.

I have a lot to learn now I'm back, and I don't just mean dusting off rusty old skills. The whole "art landscape" has changed - for the better I think.

Anyhoos, rambling. Let's see what you've been up to. :)

Edit. Forgot to ask, what about you? I find it hard to believe you are completely new to drawing. You have some skills there. As I said on your drawings, your characters look like who they are supposed to be. If you are drawing from memory, they're wonderful attempts. I can see what you were going for with both pics.

I can see you doing amazing things if you stick with it and go through the basics. Rome wasn't built in a day after all, they had to lay a foundation. (That's why I'm here, to learn the things I ignored when I was younger.)

    Okies, really gone now!

Credit given where it's due. Both characters look like who they are supposed to be. Everything else is easily identifiable too. I can "see" Jack sneaking up, and Flynn being surprised. You've taken your time to draw everything to the best of your current ability. So, I personally think it's great. :D

Everyone here could give you a laundry list of everything that's wrong with their own art, I'm certainly not alone there. As you said, that's why we're here. The most important thing is to enjoy what one is doing, and not get stressed out over perfection.

I'll see you around the site. :)

Dropping by to have a look-see at your drawing, Adam. :D

Ahh I remember looking at this earlier. I loved it! It made me smile because I actually know who Jack is!

I can see Jack with his long spidery legs creeping up to surprise someone, his arms raised exactly how you've drawn them.

    Creep... creeep... creeeep.... (pause)... BOO!

Looking really good. Alas, I cannot offer too much in the way of critique as I'm as new as you. I will say that I look forward to checking back now and then to see how you've been going!

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
