    It's alright mistakes happens.

for the funnel exercise i noticed that the ellipses you made are extremely wobbly, good ellipses should be executed with confidence. try ghosting the ellipses for as many time as possible before you put down the mark you have all the time in the world to do this so please take your time and give it your all for every mark you made. In fact when i looked back at your exercises it seems that you were trying to get through the course as fast as you could, this is somewhat concerning, the point of these courses aren't to be done as quickly as possible; it is to teach you the ways of mark marking and to give us to visualize things in 3D. the chances of getting these goals would greatly diminish as you rush through them hence once you step in to the next exercise i highly suggest that you would take your time to make every single mark you make the best one you could with your abilities. This isn't a race, not a marathon even the creator of this course describe the journey you're taking as something more of a cross continental journey so take your time and dont try to rush it alright? Also try to incorporate the ellipses, ghosted planes and superimposed lines to your warm up routine you'll need to practice them a lot and maybe consider going over the lesson material again too there's plenty of pointers in them that'll help you tremendously.

    Next Steps:

move on to the 250 boxes challenge

hello SIR_SQUEAKALOT you've submitted your first drawabox lesson, congratulations for getting started. i'll critique youe work now.

    Lines:

On the superimposed lines part you seem to be hesitating and that caused the lines to be some what wobbly, remember always execute your lines with confidence.

on the ghosted lines you did not execute the lines with confidence again, the fix is to ghost your lines until you're confident that the next line you make will come out smooth and confident. please refer back to the lesson material again and make sure to carefully read it.

    Planes:

Your lines are wobbly here i'd make sure to ghost every lines i made, another point i would like to make it seems that you are repeating over your mistakes, this is not good mistakes are normal and it is encouraged to highlight your mistakes so you do not make them again.

    ellipses:

on the tables of ellipses I notice that some of the ellipses didn't touch each other and you seemed do be hesitating while doing the ellipses make sure you ghost them before you execute every mark you made this also includes ellipses

In the ellipses in planes and the funnel exercise i noticed that you seem to be repeating over your ellipses a lot going over it twice or trice should suffice anymore and it would look messy and unclear. further more in the funnel exercise you should try to make the minor axis of the ellipses stay parallel with each other.

    boxes:

you did well on the plotted perspective however it seems that you didn't add any hatching for the boxes, this is not that important however it makes knowing which surface is in front clearer.

on the rough perspective assignment you did well following the instructions no faults as far as i could see

on the rotating box exercise you did add abit too much line weight on the boxes going through the sihoulette 2 times should suffice

on the organic perspective you did spectacularly in describing the depth with the size of the box, the only thing i can point out is that you kept going over your mistakes to hide them, remember that mistakes are not something to be ashamed of try not to go over your mistakes next time.

Overall you did really well and i could tell that you put in alot of time into this, some people want to rush through this as fast as they could however by doing that the things they gain from this course would diminish, what you would want to work on is to make smooth and confident lines and you'll get ton's from practice doing 250 boxes good luck :)

    Next Steps:

go on to the 250 boxes challenge.

hello TIAMAL you've submitted your first drawabox lesson, congratulations for getting started. i'll critique youe work now.

    Lines:

On the superimposed lines part you seem to be hesitating and that caused the lines to be some what wobbly, remember always execute your lines with confidence.

on the ghosted lines you did overshooted your lines abit you can fix this by lifting your pen just as you hit your target

    Planes:

you did well ghosting the planes however some lines seems to curving remember to ghost your lines until you're confident enough to execute it.

    ellipses:

you did well on the tables of ellipses part some og the ellipses seems to be missed shapened this can be fixed by ghosting your ellipses before you execute them

the ellipses in planes is where i found some problems you should be making sure that the ellipses's edges touch the plane's edge

On the funnel exercise you did well no faults here

    boxes:

you did well on the plotted perspective and rough perspective exercise

however on the rotating box exercise you applied too much line weight here, for this exercise going through the lines twice would be sufficient

on the organic perspectivemost of the boxes are well constructed safe for a few where the angles of the Ys are below 90° try to keep the angle of the Ys over 90 so the box wouldn't look to distorted also some of the lines are some what wobbly remember to ghost them before you execute them.

that's the end of my critique feel free to move on to the 250 boxes challenge.

    Next Steps:

start doing the 250 boxes challenge.

hello JIAQUAN you've submitted your first drawabox lesson, congratulations for getting started. i'll critique youe work now.

    Lines:

On the superimposed lines part you seem to be hesitating and that caused the lines to be some what wobbly, remember always execute your lines with confidence. Anoter point it seems that the lines you made are curving you may not be executing the lines with your shoulder or your shoulders are naturally accostomed to making curvy lines to counteract this you can try and curve the lines the opposite way and make it straight again i also suggest you go through the lesson 1 material again in case you're not executing the lines with youe shoulder

on the ghosted lines you did very well however do keep in mind that you should try to make the lines connect the two dots you seem to be over shooting abit you can try to life your pen when you reach the other dot to make the lines not overshoot

you did well ghosting the planes however i noticed that some of the lines are curving this may be due to you lacking confidence in your execution go through the lesson 1 material again make sure to scrutinize it.

    ellipses:

you did not have confedence in making the ellipses try ghosting them before you make them like ghostig lines.

the ellipses in planes is also well executed no fault here

you seemed to have forgotten to add the funnel exercise make sure to add that before you move on

    boxes:

you seemed to have made the lines on the plotted perspective willy nilly make sure te lines are parallel since they are 2 point perspective boxes

your rough perspective are correctly made however i noticed you going over youe mistakes twice, remember mistakes are okay do not go over them to hide it.

your rotarting box assignment you did well not going over your mistakes twice even if they're curvy welldone the boxes them self however they dont seem to be rotating much especially the ones on the corner, this is however acceptable since we dont expect perfection what you should keep in mind though is that all lines in 3 point perspective should converge to a single point the lines here as far as i can observe seemed to be diverging at some point

organic perspective you did not do a good job describing the depth of the image bt making the boxes smaller remember: the further away a box is the smaller it gets you also went over your mistakes many times in this exercise, DO NOT GO OVER YOUR MISTAKES they're perfectly acceptable do not try and mask it with more lines, also when you construct the Ys remember that all angle should be greater than 90° or the boxes you made will look distorted and all lines should converge to a single vanishing point here.

GoodJob on making it this far you can move on to the 250 boxes challenge after you submit the funnel exercise

    Next Steps:

add the funnel revision before you move on to the 250 boxes challenge.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

hello blanket5 you've submitted your first drawabox lesson, congratulations for getting started. i'll critique youe work now.

    Lines:

On the superimposed lines part you seem to be hesitating and that caused the lines to be some what wobbly, remember always execute your lines with confidence.

on the ghosted lines you did very well no fault here

    Planes:

you did well ghosting the planes however i noticed some of the lines has been repeated. this is not what you should be doing if you made a mistake do not try to correct it.

    ellipses:

you did well on the tables of ellipses part

the ellipses in planes is also well executed no fault here

the funnels however you need to make sure the ellipses are alligned correctly on the minor axis this is a very important thing to keep inmind, when you warm up i suggest you try to keep the minor axis of the ellipses paralleled to each other

    boxes:

you did well on the plotted perspective

the problem arrises when you did the rough perspective however you seemed to be repeating the lines you did incorrectly remember mistakes are okay do not try and fix them

the rotating boxes made the same mistakes as on the rough perspective, remember mistakes are okay do not fix them

organic perspective you did remarkably on this, however you seem to still be trying to fix you lines this has been said too many times already however remember to not go over your mistakes. other than this when you make the Ys remember to make all the angles over 90° and remember that all lines must converge to a single vanishing point

this is all i have to say well done on your submissions you can move on to the 250 boxes challenge now.

    Hello RedFruit,

Congratulations on finishing lesson 1, this is the start of your journey and there's still alot more to come. I'll be giving my insight for your submissions starting with.

    superimposed lines

you did a very fine job for someone who just started however i cant help but noticed that you were rushing to get this finished at the end of the first assignment hence fraying on both ends remember this is not a race, you should try to execute every lines to the best of your abilities.

    Table of elipses

some of the elipses are escaping their boundaries this is normal for someone who is just starting out just keep inmind to keep the elipses in their bounderies in the future

    Organic perspective

The instructions stated that you should use the Y method for constructing the boxes here however this is forgivable just make sure to read the instructions better moving forward, another issue however is that the lines aren't convering to a vanishingpoint, in this assignment it is important that the line converges at a vanishingpoint, overall this is not a big deal yet since you'll get plenty of practice in the 250 boxes challange but do keep a conscious mind when drawing box from now on to make sure that the lines converge to a vanishingpoint.

I hope that you'll achieve what you desired from drawabox.com

    -Nate

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
