Hi Weijak! Thank you so much for yet another wonderful critique. It's great to see this critique in relation to the previous one, as you pointed out things were I made progress and others that remain an issue. I thank you greatly for this and I'm sorry about not giving you time to recover, this will not happen again (by the time I uploaded this one I took a 2-week holiday, so I'll just start fresh now with the next challenge, thus providing you with more time to rest!). I'll move on to the cylinders then!

I'm glad you found this useful. I can already see your ellipses becoming better! So I'll be marking this lesson as complete.

    Next Steps:

Move on to 250 Box Challenge.

Hi Holyanne! Congratulations on finishing lesson 1! I'm Gady and i'll be reviewing your work, so let's get to it.

    Lines

    • Superimposed: only thing I'd point out is there some fraying on both ends. Keep in mind you should place your fineliner carefully on only one point and then strike your lines as they come.

    • Lines in general: really good job. You're already doing pretty confident straight lines.

    Ellipses

    • Funnels: excellent attempt. Ellipses wobble a little bit but not to worry as all the main concepts of this excercises are achieved.

    • Ghosted ellipses: already getting confidence, even reaching for specific points.

    • Table of ellipses: good job, wide variety, confident marks, drawn through 2 or 3 times.

    Boxes

    • Organic: good job at variety and overlapping, be aware of scratchy lines. Don't redo lines that come off.

    • Rotated: good job at keeping your edges close, I think the main distortions came when you couldn't keep your consistence with that. Also, most boxes aren't rotating, check this diagram: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/d73eea49.jpg

    • Perspective: lines look very confident, you did a good job attempting width lines parallel and height lines perpendicular to the horizon. Only thing I'd point out is that you totally overkilled your extending lines to horizon line: go much more slightly in the future, they are totally shadowing your fineliner marks.

    Final thoughts

I think you did a very decent job on this lesson. You clearly understood the main goals of the excercises, and you are already grasping confidence when approaching lines, so I'll be marking this lesson as complete.

    Next Steps:

Incorporate these excercises to your daily 15 minute warm-ups and move on to 250 Box Challenge. Good luck!

Hi Karamonk! Congratulations on finishing lesson 1! I'm Gady and i'll be reviewing your work, so let's get to it.

    Lines

    • Superimposed: one thing I can point out is that you are fraying on both ends, specially on curved lines. Keep in mind you should place your fineliner carefully on only one point and then strike your lines as they come.

    • Lines: already achieving confidence on ghosted planes. Be careful of wobbliness when getting near the ending points of the line. Remember: confidence > accuracy.

    Ellipses

    • Table of ellipses: you tried a wide variety, always reaching for bounds, but one main problem - ellipses with pointy edges, specially narrow ones.

    • Funnels: your second attempt was much better. Be aware that minor axis should always bisect ellipses.

    Boxes

    • Perspective: Good job at almost always keeping width lines parallel and height lines perpendicular to the horizon line. Be aware of scratchy lines.

    • Rotated: good job at keeping edges close, be aware last row from each end is not rotating. See diagram: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/d73eea49.jpg

    • Organic: I think you are being too hard on yourself! All in all this is a good first attempt at drawing boxes in perspective. You will get better with practice, that's for sure.

    Final thoughts

I think you did a decent job on this lesson. You clearly understood the main goals of the excercises. I see only one problem that I think is worth doing another attempt. That's why I'll request only one revision before you move on to the next part of the course.

    Next Steps:

    I reccommend you to do:

    • 1 (one) page of table of ellipses, trying to understand how does your arm move that makes you draw pointy ellipses and try to correct that movement.

Just attach your revision to the reply and I'll mark this lesson as complete.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi Kungfufrogz! Congratulations on finishing lesson 1! I'm Gady and i'll be reviewing your work, so let's get to it.

    Lines

    • On superimposed lines: good job not fraying on both ends.

    • Lines: no wobble, but quite a bit of arching. This could be because you are pivotting more on your elbow than on your shoulder. Be aware of that and try different approaches so you'll understand how your arm works best.

    • Ghosted planes: not so much arching but more wobbling. I'd speculate you were here too worried about accuracy and this leads to lack of confidence. Remember: confidence > accuracy.

    Ellipses

    • Table of ellipses: on some quadrants you left space unexplored by ellipses. Ellipses were frequently deformed to reach bounds. Same on ghosted planes: try to strike ellipses without worrying too much about accuracy first, ghosting properly but when you put ink on the paper you already gambled and there's no going back.

    • Funnels: ellipses don't vary angles as they get away from the center, also not drawing through 2 or 3 times some of them.

    Boxes

    • Perspective: pretty good job. Be careful with parallel and perpendicular lines to the horizon. Be aware that on rough perspective width lines should be (and in your work sometimes are not) parallel to horizon, and height lines should be (and in your work sometimes are not) perpendicular to horizon. This is a hard task, but it's good to keep in mind so you can get better at it.

    • Rotated: good job at keeping edges close, main thing is boxes are almost not rotating. See diagram: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/d73eea49.jpg

    • Organic: good variety and overlapping, but very scratchy lines, don't repeat them, no matter how off they come.

    Final thoughts

I think you did a decent job on this lesson. You clearly understood the main goals of the excercises, except for funnel page. That's why I'll request only a revision of that page before you move on to the next part of the course.

    Next Steps:

    I reccommend you to do:

    • 1 (one) page of funnel ellipses. Go over the explainations of Uncomfy on the lesson page and try corner funnels too.

Just attach your revision to the reply and I'll mark this lesson as complete.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi Muun! Congratulations on finishing lesson 1! I'm Gady and i'll be reviewing your work, so let's get to it.

    Lines

Good job on trying a wide variety of superimposed lines. There's almost not fraying on both ends, that's good. But keep in mind you should place your fineliner carefully on only one point and then strike your lines as they come.

The main issue on this stage is that lines are arching quite a bit. This could be because you are pivotting more on your elbow than in your shoulder. Be aware of that and try different approaches so you'll understand how your arm works best.

    Ellipses

On table of ellipses, you did not place a division line on the center of the page. I think this made you miss the opportunity to try a wider variety of ellipses.

Anyway, as you seem to be reaching for bounds and adjacent ellipses, the main problem is that your ellipses look very wobbly and messy. This is evident on funnels, appart from the fact that minor axis is frequently not bisecting your ellipses.

    Boxes

Perspective: good approach. Good job at almost always keeping width lines parallel and height lines perpendicular to the horizon line.

Organic: good overlapping. But be carefult with lines: don't repeat them, it doesn't matter how off they come. Get used to mistakes and working with them.

Rotated: good job at keeping edges close, only thing is boxes on the last row on the left is not rotating. See diagram: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/d73eea49.jpg

    Final thoughts

I think you did a good enough job on this lesson. I think the main issue you have to improve is not about understanding the goals of the excercises, but confidence. And that is something you can only gain with practice, so I'll be marking this lesson as complete.

    Next Steps:

Incorporate these excercises to your daily 15 minute warm-ups and move on to 250 Box Challenge. Good luck!

Hi Brumcrumbs! Congratulations on finishing lesson 1! I'm Gady and i'll be reviewing your work, so let's get to it.

    Lines

    • On superimposed lines, there's almost not fraying on both ends, that's good. But keep in mind you should place your fineliner carefully on only one point and then strike your lines as they come.

    • The main issue on this stage is that lines are wobbling and arching. This improves on ghosted planes, but I'd speculate you are too worried about accuracy and this leads to lack of confidence. Remember: confidence > accuracy.

    Ellipses

    • On table of ellipses you did a very good job. You have variety, you are reaching for bounds; but still, the main issue is all your ellipses are not very confident.

    • Funnels, same thing. Ellipses being bisected by minor axis, wider angles as they get away from the center; still, wobbliness. Again, mileage and making mistakes will solve this.

    Boxes

    • Rotated boxes: all in all, fine job. One thing i'd point out: you didn't keep the edges close on the corners, so that leads to accumulated deformation.

    • Perspective: good job at keeping width lines parallel and height lines perpendicular to the horizon line. Considering the things I have pointed out about your lines in previous sections, I found this curious; in this excercise it is common to have a excessive wobbly line, because you are worrying not only about nailing lines but also perspective: this is not your case at all. Although they still lack a bit of confidence, you managed to draw believable boxes in perspective. So yeah, mileage doing its work already.

    • Organic perspective: excellent job, lots of overlapping, this adds up to your box mileage for sure.

    Final thoughts

I think you did a very decent job on this lesson. You clearly understood the main goals of the excercises, and although you still need to approach lines with a confident-focus mindset, this is something that can only be achieved with more and more practice, so I'll be marking this lesson as complete.

    Next Steps:

Incorporate these excercises to your daily 15 minute warm-ups and move on to 250 Box Challenge. Good luck!

Hey Weijak! Awesome critique. I read it twice now and I already found new things to improve on. I will definitely keep on reading it as I continue with the course!

    Thank you so much.

When it comes to technical drawing, there's no one better than Scott Robertson. I regularly use this book as a reference when eyeballing my perspective just won't cut it anymore. Need to figure out exactly how to rotate an object in 3D space? How to project a shape in perspective? Look no further.
