    Hi !

Lines : There should be fraying lines at the end but not at the begginings. Maybe you didn't took time executing the ghosted method and did not take the time to place our pen above your starting point perfecly.

Ghosted line : You did not fallow instruction properl. You have to mark 2 point and trace. But all line must be from different angle and lenghs. But because you connected your point you created pattern resulting in lot of trace having nearly the same lenghs and not overlaping.

Ghosted planes : You did not follow instruction properly. All planes must be different in lenght and size. Your grid isn't working cause you are training yourself only on one tpe of plane. Also boxes are not supposed to be touching, it resulted in one of your page behing very very difficul to read and understand where one plane begins and ends.

Tables of Ellipses : You did not fallow instruction properly. The ellipses are touching the 4 border each time, and you are drawing through your ellipses 2 times, so that's good, you understood the technique. But you where not supposed to drew a big ellipses in a box. And drawing nearly 2 to 3 type of ellipses. You are suppose to drew lot of ellipses in a plane, try to keep their angle and size the same. Onces a plane is finish, you must change the angle and type of ellipses you drew, resulting in lots and lots of angle and size.

Ellipses in places : since the ghosted planes was not understood, this one is difficult to judge. Somme ellipses are not drew in planes, but was is supposed to be planes. You drew 4 of them going through them 4 times, and lot's are going out of their planes. Maybe try to take your time ghosting.

Funnel : You understood the asignement and drew various ellipses in sizze and angle. Some axis don't cut the ellipses in helf perfectly but that ok !

Rough perspective : Don't redrew over a bad lines, keep it. Otherwise you did good !

Rotated boxe : This is good. at the left of the pictures the boxes is not center around the axis, and at the wright you didn't rotated the last boxe as well as on the left because the top plane of the boxe is the same size in lenght as the boxes at the left, so the boxe didn't rotated but shrink. It was well done on the left, top and bottom owerver so I think you have understood. I'll just say try taking your taking with the ghosting method because here you try to correct trajectory a lot of time resulted in deformed boxes. You understood the assignement.

Organic perspective : You did great ! On two plan you didn't vary the size and type of boxes, but it was done in the other planes. The line quality is significantly better.

Overall : Perhaps you didn't follow the asignement properly of the 5 first exercises. So I think the ghosting method was really sloppy afterward because of that. The lack of variation in boxes and ellelipsis will make the 250 boxes challenge really difficult. You improved a lot on the 5 lasting exercices, so good luck for that !

    Next Steps:

I suggest redrawing the 5 first exercices (Stoping at the funnel). You can see exemples of pages of exercices at the bottom of each lesson that will show ou how should your page resemble at the end of the exercice.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

    Hi !

You did perfectly in nearly all exercices. You follow whath was ask and you execution is confident leading to really small mistake that are not so much relavant.

I just have one thing to say about the rough perspective exercices. You corrected yourself, but try not to to that while doing the exercice. It attrack the viewer to your bad line, instead of showing you have corrected it. You can always correct a bad line onces you have finish a given exercice.

So yeah good job and good luck for the 250 boxes challenge :)

    Hi !

Ghosted planes - Sometimes you have retrace your line to correct yourself, at first try not to do that. It attract the viewer on your mistake. It's ok if a line was wrong but draw properly with the ghosting technique.

Ellipses - Lots of ellipses are not properlie touching the top and bottom line. Maybe evaluated the distance while doing the ghosted method, and taking your time. It was better with the exercice of the ellipses in plane.

Funnel - The axis are not cutting some of the ellipses perfectly in half, but you where nearly perfect.

Rotated boxes - apart from some mistake, you did very well and understood everything. Good job.

Organic boxe : don't correct yourself or retrace a line, use the ghosting method instead and if the line turns out not good, it's ok.

Overall : You understood all the exercices, struggle a bit on ellipses but that's ok for now. I'll say, try not to correct your self (while doing the exercice), and maybe use a smaller pen to place your point. They are really big compare to the finess of your line and go through your pages. At the end : Good job.

    Hi !

Lines and Ghosted lines - All good. The arc ones you have fraying on both end, fraying at the end is ok, fraying at the begginings generally means you are not taking your time to place our hand accordingly to the starting point.

Ghosted planes - It seems your are not as confident with your line than before. Lots of them are wobbly, don't touch the starting point. Maybe you are rushing, or maybe you don't utilize your shoulder properly. But in general the exercice is understood.

Table of ellipses, Ellipses in planes - You did very good.

Funnels - It's good. In one of your funnel the axis is not cuting the ellipses in half, and on another one (the big one) there is trouble with consistancy. But you show clearly you understood the task and will master it in no time.

Plotted perspective - 2 two of your box dosen't keep their verticals perpendicular to the horizon. But all the rest is good.

    Rough perspective - good.

Rotated boxes - The boxes at the far end are not properly rotating, the size of their planes are not smaller than the planes of the previous. That why it why suggested to drew 4 squares on the page to help you see the sizze of the center box and tr to go smaller as ou go (the all box dosen't get small, simply the top plane apears to). Also you didn't drew the 4 boxes at each corner. Your line work is not done with confidence, maybe take more time with the ghosting method, use your shoulder, star at the starting point. I think this exercice is not master, but that normal I think because it is very complicated at the begining.

Organic perspective - Your line was much more confident than the previous exercice.

Overall : All the exercices (execpt for Rotated boxes) are fully understood and master with some ghosting method a bit off sometimes. You did really great congratulation.

    Next Steps:

When you start the 250 boxes challenge, the ghosting method will become more natural. Use the ghosting method for hatching the boxes, after the 250 you'll see the progress.

    Hi !

1 - 5 of your set of lines have fraying at the begging. At the end it is not a problem. Try taking your time adjusting the pen to the starting dot. Otherwise everything else is drawn with confidence and it good.

2 - Good ! You try correcting some wich resulted in arching and a wobbly line, but that's fine. The majority is executed as should be.

3 - Your ellipsis on plane are drawn with confidence so for me you succeded and executed the task. But it should be noted that nearly all your ellepsis are going out of there plane. Accuracy is not as important than confidance so that why you did very well.

4 - On the ellipsis exercise it is nearly the same as above. Really good technique. Lot of ellipsis are going out of the page, but that's ok.

5 - The ellipsis in funnel have no confidence. Certain ellipses are drawn with 1 tour (2 or 3 is best), and are not drawn in one smooth motion. Lot of ellipsis are not cut in two simetrical half by the minor axis. One funnel as the far end of the page is however very good.

6 and 7 - Good. On the second boxe exercises ou drawn 2 boxes rotated, but the width should be parrallele to the horizon line, and height perpendicular to the horizon line.

8 - 2 boxes at the far end are not rotated enough, ou can tell because the width of one is nearly the same as the one boxes before it. But that's not a problem at all, cause we didn't tackel rotation of boxes in lesson 1. Another mistake is that there is a set of boxes not aline to the axis.

9 - On the last exercise, the ghosted method and line are not very confident. But the exercise is well done !

This was my first review, I try to get trough the point so it might seems cold, but overall I think ou did good and understand all the assignement. Good job !

Framed Ink

Framed Ink

I'd been drawing as a hobby for a solid 10 years at least before I finally had the concept of composition explained to me by a friend.

Unlike the spatial reasoning we delve into here, where it's all about understanding the relationships between things in three dimensions, composition is all about understanding what you're drawing as it exists in two dimensions. It's about the silhouettes that are used to represent objects, without concern for what those objects are. It's all just shapes, how those shapes balance against one another, and how their arrangement encourages the viewer's eye to follow a specific path. When it comes to illustration, composition is extremely important, and coming to understand it fundamentally changed how I approached my own work.

Marcos Mateu-Mestre's Framed Ink is among the best books out there on explaining composition, and how to think through the way in which you lay out your work.

Illustration is, at its core, storytelling, and understanding composition will arm you with the tools you'll need to tell stories that occur across a span of time, within the confines of a single frame.
